How to Install Telegram on Ubuntu Linux
Learn how to install Telegram on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and above, as well as other Ubuntu-based Linux distros like Linux Mint and Zorin OS in this post.
Telegram is a WhatsApp alternative with end-to-end encryption and data privacy at its core
If you’re sat mouthing “What is Telegram?” at me I’ll explain: Telegram messenger is a free, full-featured, and hugely popular WhatsApp alternative with server-side encryption and data privacy at its core.
There are official Telegram apps for Android and iOS (note: you need a working mobile number to create a Telegram account), and you can use the service in any web browser from Telegram Web.
But the best way to experience all of the features Telegram has to offer is by using the official Telegram desktop client which is available for Windows, macOS, and —hurrah— Linux.
Now, keep in mind that this is a tutorial on how to install Telegram on Ubuntu, Linux Mint and other Linux distros. It is not a “Telegram vs WhatsApp” showdown, or a blow-by-blow of the service; you can make up your own mind.
As such we won’t deep dive into the reasons why millions of fine folk use this messaging service daily. That said, here are a few of Telegram’s features:
- Send text, photos, audio and video clips
- Individual, group and private chat options
- Make free voice calls to other users
- Messages are encrypted and can self-destruct
- Open API and protocol permits 3rd party apps
Waffle digested, let’s get to the meat in this how-to sandwich!
Below are four different ways to install Telegram on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS and above (though the service also supports Ubuntu 16.04 LTS should you be running a version that old).
Regardless of which way you choose to install Telegram you will get the same app with the same features.
No difference, no caveats, no flaws.
Additionally, if you install from the PPA or Snap methods below you get you automatic updates to new builds as and when they’re released.
The Telegram desktop app for Linux is a native app and is (mostly) open source software distributed under the GPL v3 license. Code is available on GitHub. It should run fine under most desktop environments, e.g., Xfce, Cinnamon, etc, however a few DEs may have trouble showing the tray indicator.
Method 1: Official Telegram Download
The desktop section of the official Telegram website lets you download a Telegram desktop app installer that works on a variety of operating systems, including Ubuntu, Linux Mint and more.
Click the button below to download the tarball package for Linux distros (including Ubuntu) which contains a standalone Telegram runtime and updater:

To “run” Telegram using this package is easy: extract the tar.xz archive, enter the ‘Telegram’ folder it creates, then double-click on the telegram binary inside to launch the app.
You can then follow the set up instructions that appear on your screen.
Note: this method does not “install” the app on your system, but it will add a ‘Telegram’ app shortcut to your system app launcher/app menu. Just remember to not delete the binary file it links to!

Method 2: Install Telegram Snap App
You can install Telegram as a Snap application on Ubuntu using the Ubuntu Software app. To do this just search for ‘telegram-desktop’ inside the store or click the install button below to open the app listing page directly:

You can install the Telegram Snap app using the command line with the command:
sudo snap install telegram-desktop
When the Telegram install is complete the app will be available to launch from app launchers and app menus.
Once running, just follow the on-screen set-up instructions.
Method 3: Add the Telegram PPA
The terrific Spanish Linux blog Atareao maintain an unofficial Telegram PPA for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and above. This PPA packages the latest official builds in a traditional repository.
If you want to install Telegram on Linux Mint you may prefer using this PPA over the binary (method 1) or snap package (method 2).
Adding the Telegram PPA to your software sources is easy. Just pop open a new terminal window (ctrl + t) and run the following command, entering your user password when prompted:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/telegram
Followed by:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install telegram
Once install is complete you will be able to launch Telegram by finding it in your desktop environment’s app menu or app launcher.

Method 4: Install Telegram Flatpak
The Telegram Linux client is also available to install as a Flatpak app from Flathub.
Note: on Ubuntu you will need to install Flatpak and set-up the Flathub repo before you can install the app.

To sign up for a Telegram account you need a valid/working mobile telephone number, just like WhatsApp. This applies even if you only intend to use the service on a desktop computer.

Telegram provides native applications for Linux users in the form of Snap and Flatpak packages. It is also available in the software repository of most distributions.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you various methods of installing Telegram on Ubuntu and other Linux distributions.
- Installing Telegram from official repositories on Ubuntu (easy but you may not get the latest version)
- Installing Telegram using Snap on Ubuntu and other distributions (gives you the latest version)
- Installing Telegram using Flatpak on Fedora and other distros (gives you the latest version)
You can go with any of the methods discussed here.
Method 1: Install Telegram in Ubuntu using Software Center
This is the most convenient way to install any software, especially if you’re a beginner and don’t want to mess around the terminal yet.
Open the software center and search for Telegram by clicking on the search icon, and from the given results, the first result is what you’re looking for.
Click on the Install button and Telegram will be installed on your system.
Remove Telegram
Open the software center and select the Installed tab to bring a list of installed software in the system. Here, you’ll find Telegram and a little bin icon for uninstallation. Click on that bin icon and that’s it!

You will find the availability of Telegram in almost every package manager. Let me share the commands for some of the common ones.
For Ubuntu and Debian-based distros:
sudo apt install telegram-desktop
For Fedora, you have to enable the RPM Fusion repository:
sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
Now, you can proceed with the installation of Telegram:
sudo dnf install telegram-desktop
For Arch-based distros:
sudo pacman -S telegram-desktop
You can use the respective package managers for removing Telegram.
Method 3: Install Telegram using Snap
Ubuntu comes pre-configured with Snap. For other distributions, you may have to enable Snap explicitly.
With Snap, you get the latest version of the Telegram application. Use this command:
sudo snap install telegram-desktop

If you want to remove it afterward, use this command:
sudo snap remove telegram-desktop
Method 4: Install Telegram Through Flatpak
Flatpak is another universal packaging format for Linux. Many distros such as Linux Mint and Fedora come preconfigured with it. For others, you can easily enable Flatpak.
You should also enable the Flathub repo.
You can install the latest Telegram version with this command:
flatpak install flathub org.telegram.desktop
Removing Telegram with Flatpak
If you don’t like it, you can remove it using:
flatpak uninstall flathub org.telegram.desktop
Using Telegram in Linux
Once you’re done with the installation process, you can launch Telegram from your system menu or by just typing telegram in the terminal. With the first launch, you’ll be greeted with a welcome screen like this:
There are two options to sign in: Using a QR code from your mobile app, so you won’t need to enter your phone no and OTP and the other is the traditional method (enter credentials and OTP to log in).
The default interface has been kept minimal and the below image is from our Telegram, which will notify you whenever we’ll post something useful to you.

1. Installing Telegram using the Snap package

You can also open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and type the following command to find the Snap package.
snap find telegram-desktop
Then run this command to install it.
snap install telegram-desktop
After installation, you can find the client in the application menu.
2. Installing Telegram using Flatpak package

You can also find it in Ubuntu Software by searching "Telegram". Then you just need to click the "Install" button to install it in Ubuntu.
You can also open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and type the following command to find the Flatpak package.
flatpak search telegram
Then run this command to install it.
flatpak install flathub org.telegram.desktop flatpak run org.telegram.desktop
After installation, you can find the client in the applications menu.
3. Installing Telegram on Ubuntu using the PPA repository
This application is available in the launchpad.net repository , for Ubuntu and similar.
To install it, open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and type the following commands
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/telegram sudo apt-get update sudo apt install telegram
After installation, you can find the client in the applications menu.
4. Installing Telegram in Ubuntu using the UALinux repository
This application is available in the UALinux repository , for Ubuntu and similar.

To install it, open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T), and enter the following commands
wget http://archive.ualinux.com/deb/pool/all/ualinux/ualinux- repository-all.deb sudo apt install ./ualinux-repository-all.deb sudo bash -c "rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* ; sudo apt update sudo apt install telegram-desktop
Once installed, you can find the client in the applications menu.
5. Work with Telegram on any system without installation
And there is another great way to use Telegram without installing it.
To do this, go to the site https://web.telegram.org/
in a web browser After that, open Telegram on your phone and scan the QR code on the screen.
And that's it! Work in it without any hassle. True, in this case, you can not make calls in it.
I prefer this method and work in Telegram through a browser. I really like him.
6. Working with Telegram on any system using binary files
All actions must be done in the terminal. I want to immediately note that there are only 64-bit binaries.
Pros:

Cons:
- there will be no launch icon in the program menu and you also need to run it from the terminal.
To install it, open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and enter the following commands:

Conclusion
If after installation you cannot find this application in the menu, log out and log in again and it will appear.
Snap and Flatpak package and DEB package can work perfectly with each other. Thus, you can install three Telegram clients at once in Ubuntu.
