How to Hide Your Instagram Online Status

Most social media networks and chat platforms these days include a feature that shows when a user was last online or last active on the service, which can be either helpful or a hindrance, depending on your personal or business situation.


WhatsApp includes an optional "Last Seen" status for the person you're chatting with in a conversation thread, while Instagram tells you how long it was since a user was active when you're viewing messages from them in your Direct inbox. Instagram also shows a green dot next to their profile picture and name if the person is currently interacting with the app.

Sometimes though, for whatever reason, you might not want someone – or indeed anyone – to know when you were last active on social media. Fortunately, WhatsApp and Instagram both allow you to hide your activity status in the app. Here our focus is on how to hide your Instagram status, but you can find how to do the same thing in WhatsApp in our dedicated how-to article.

Hiding Your Instagram Online Status

  1. Launch the Instagram app.
  2. Tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Tap the three lines in the top-right corner.
  4. Tap Settings.

  5. Tap Privacy.
  6. Tap Activity Status.
  7. Tap the switch to toggle off Show activity status.

How to Turn Off Your Active Status on Instagram

  • If you want to turn off your active status on Instagram and hide when you're online, you can do that using the Instagram app or website.
  • With Activity Status enabled, anyone you follow or have messaged on Instagram can see when you are active.
  • To hide your active status on the mobile app, go to the Privacy menu in Settings and turn off Activity Status. 

If you follow or have messaged someone on Instagram, they can see your online status by default. But sometimes, you want a little more privacy. If you want to hide your status, you can do that using your phone or the Instagram webpage, though the option is hidden in Settings and not as easy to find as it could be. 

How to turn off active status on the Instagram mobile app

The steps to turn off your active status are the same whether you have an iPhone or Android device, and once you set it, no one will be able to tell if you are active on Instagram. 

1. Start the Instagram app and tap your profile icon at the bottom right of the screen.

2. Tap the three-line menu at the top right. 

3. In the popup menu, tap Settings.

How to turn off active status on the Instagram website

If you use Instagram in a web browser, you can turn off your active status with a few clicks, so people you follow or have messaged won't know if you are online.

1. Open the Instagram webpage in a browser and log into your account if necessary.

2. Click your profile icon at the top right.

3. In the dropdown menu, click Settings.

How to Hide Likes and Activity on Instagram

Instagram is a really popular social media platform. It is the second most popular social site after Facebook. Instagram is essentially a photo sharing platform where you can share photos or videos with your followers. When you or someone likes a photo or video, you start following someone or commenting on an Instagram post, all of your followers can see it.

Instagram makes your recent activities available in the action pane. This prevents you from using Instagram freely as anyone can see what you are doing. If you want to hide your Instagram activity from your followers or from a specific person, then yes, you can do that.

Unfortunately, there is no official way to hide your activity from subscribers. But there are a few tricks that we will tell you in this article so that you can use Instagram without letting anyone see your activity.

Hiding photos you like

Instagram only shows your followers the 8 recent photos you like. You can use this to your advantage and hide photos or videos that you don't want others to see.

You just need to take 8 random photos after you like the one you want to hide.

So first, like the photos you want to hide, and then 8 random images. This will allow your followers to only see the random photos you like while hiding the actual photo or posts.

Well, another possible way to do this is to bookmark the message you want and then like it later so no one else can see it.

Be active at night

Being active on Instagram at night will probably hide your recent activities. Most people use Instagram during the day, not at night. So if you use Instagram at night when everyone is asleep, chances are good that no one will be able to see your activity. Even in the morning, the activity wall will be filled with other people's activities, not yours.

Blocking a person

If you only want to hide your activity from a specific person and not from all of your followers, the best way to do this is to block them.

You can block this person and then like any photo or follow someone without telling them. Now unlock it again. This will prevent the person from seeing anything you did while they were blocked.

However, this person will no longer be on your follower list once you block them. So be careful.

Hide your last visit

Your activity status lets everyone know when you were last active on Instagram. So if you want to hide your activity, it's very important to hide your last visit as well. You can do this by following the steps listed below.

  • Log in to your profile
  • Now click on settings.
  • Here you will find the Show activity status option.
  • Clear the checkbox to prevent everyone from seeing when you were last active.

However, you will also not be able to see other people's last seen times if you uncheck this box.

By following these simple steps, you can easily hide your activity from a follower or specific person and use Instagram freely without worry.
