By Yasmin Ahmed: People often panic at the thought of relatives or friends reading their messages. In the age of WhatsApp and incessant incoming messages, it is always a sane option to hide message preview on the home screen. It is convenient for iPhone users as the settings can be managed from the WhatsApp app itself. Android users can also tweak notifications by going to their phone settings or trying out the following methods. After disabling the notifications, the content of WhatsApp messages will not be revealed on the home screen.

How to stop anyone reading WhatsApp chats on your phone

The messages, photos, voice messages and videos you send in WhatsApp are all protected by end-to-end encryption. That means they’re private and no-one can intercept those messages or see their content, and that includes WhatsApp and Facebook.

However, unless you make the changes we recommend here, others could still read your chats and potentially see personal and sensitive information. If they know your phone’s passcode, you leave your unlocked phone lying around or they simply see messages pop up on your phone’s lock screen, that end-to-end encryption is no help at all.

But you can fix all this by changing a few settings, and it’ll take but a minute.

1. Enable WhatApp’s ‘Screen Lock’ feature

Even if someone got hold of your phone when it was unlocked or guessed your passcode, Screen Lock stops them from seeing your WhatsApp chats. With it enabled, your fingerprint or face (with Face ID on an iPhone) is required to open WhatsApp.

To enable it:

  1. Tap the Settings cog (iPhone) or the three vertical dots (Android), then tap Account.
  2. Tap Privacy and then Screen Lock (iPhone) or Fingerprint lock (Android).
  3. Tap to enable it on the next screen and put your finger on your phone’s scanner if prompted.

You can choose whether to require that every time WhatsApp is opened (the Immediately option) or every 1 minutes, 15 minutes or after 1 hour since the last time you authenticated yourself.

When this is enabled, you can still reply to WhatsApp notifications and answer voice or video calls.

2. Stop messages being displayed on your lock screen

If you don’t want anyone to be able to see messages people are sending, you need to stop them from being shown on your phone’s lock screen.

The way to achieve this differs according to your phone.

If you have an iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications then scroll down to WhatsApp in the long list.
  3. Tap Show Previews and choose either Never or When Unlocked.

If you choose Never, then you will stop seeing message previews even when you’re using your phone. The middle-ground setting, which is now the default, is When Unlocked. This means messages will be hidden on the Lock Screen, but not when your phone is unlocked.

Another way to stop previews from being displayed in notifications that pop up when your iPhone is unlocked is to go to WhatsApp’s own Settings, tap Notifications and disable Show Preview.

On Android, the location of the setting will be different for each phone manufacturer. But, in general, you need to do the following:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap on Apps (or Apps & Notifications)
  3. Tap on WhatsApp in the list
  4. Turn ‘Show preview’.

If that setting doesn’t exist on your phone, look for Notifications in the Settings app and look for an option to “Hide all sensitive data” or similar.

Android owners can also go to the Notification settings within WhatsApp’s own settings and disable ‘Use high priority notifications’ which will stop message previews being shown at the top of the screen when your phone is unlocked.

There are other privacy and security settings you can make so your use of WhatsApp is even safer. For example, you can enable two-factor authentication in the Security settings which helps keep your account safe from anyone who might try to steal it and take control of it.

Other privacy options include restricting who can add you to groups, and who can see when you were ‘last seen’. In fact, a recent update changes the default setting so that only your contacts can see when you last used the app (or are currently online). Those who aren’t in your contacts list – i.e. strangers – can’t see that status.

How to properly set up notifications for WhatsApp, VK and Telegram on iPhone

It is not enough just to lock the smartphone screen. It may happen that any stranger who has taken your iPhone in their hands will be able to read the information from the notifications. If you want to remove private messenger conversations from the lock screen, then you can turn off notification previews in two different ways (this will still receive notifications, but the content will be hidden).

How to disable notification preview for WhatsApp, VK (Vkontakte), Telegram, Viber, etc. on iPhone

The previous method works on an all-or-nothing basis for every notification that arrives on your iPhone. But what if you want to disable notification preview only for specific applications, such as WhatsApp, VK (Vkontakte), Telegram, etc., and leave the previous mode for other applications?

1. Open the " Settings " application on the iPhone and go to the " Notifications " section.

2. Go to the notification settings for the specific app you want and select " Thumbnail Show ".

3. Select the desired option: No lock (if the phone is unlocked, you will see the contents of the message) or Never (the message text will not be available on the lock screen).

Now when a new message arrives, the notification will show the sender's name and the content area will simply say "Message".

How to disable iPhone lock screen notifications

Notifications are an important feature of all phones. With their help, we can quickly respond to incoming messages, receive current news and much more information. But, on the other hand, notifications greatly undermine our privacy. If you have never set up notifications on your iPhone, it turns out that each user can take your smartphone and read whatever he wants. Apple has foreseen a similar scenario and rolled out special tools to help keep personal affairs a secret. If you wish, you can either completely disable notifications or customize them for yourself by prohibiting display on the lock screen.

Understanding how to turn off notifications on the lock screen of your iPhone.

Let's make a reservation right away that today we will not touch on the issues of temporarily disabling notifications. Much has been written about this in the article about Focus mode in iOS 15 , check it out if you are interested.

Why you shouldn't give your iPhone to anyone.

How to disable iPhone lock screen notifications

The best way to keep yourself as private as possible is completely disable notifications on the iPhone lock screen . So for sure no one will see what is happening on your smartphone, and you will be calm.

To do this:

  • Go to Settings, Notifications.
  • Scroll to the app for which you want to hide notifications.
  • Next, tap on it and click on the checkmark next to Lock Screen.

Turn off notifications on the lock screen.

Done. Now notifications from this application will not come to the lock screen. It is very convenient if you do not want to be distracted from work or other important matters.

Plus, please note that in this settings item you can separately select the display of notifications in the form of banners and on the lock screen. As soon as the need for reading arises, it will be possible to go there.

Thumbnail display on iPhone

For me, it's just a must-have feature. Every time I buy a new smartphone or other equipment, I try to make sure that all notifications come without the text . I really don't like the translation of the function name. It is unlikely that even one of the users, delving into the settings, will be able to figure out what the Thumbnail Show is without someone else's help. Not at all intuitive, I think.

This is what notifications will look like with thumbnails turned off.

Thumbnail Show is a feature on your iPhone that allows you to disable the preview feature in all notifications. Thus, the text of notifications on the lock screen will be hidden.

You can hide notification text on the iPhone lock screen as follows:

  • Go to your iPhone Settings.
  • Next, find the item Notifications, Show thumbnails.
  • Select the method you need.

Use these settings to turn off thumbnails on iPhone.

Next, there will be three options for displaying thumbnails:

  • Always - the text will always be displayed on the screen.
  • If is unlocked, notifications will only appear on an unlocked iPhone.
  • Never - no lock screen notifications can be read.

Personally, I prefer the second option. Until you approach the iPhone and Face ID works, nothing will be read. This will help you protect your smartphone in case you are away from it.

But it often happens that someone in the subway or at home tries to peep who wrote what to me. If you don't want to be spied on - choose Never, and you will be happy.

How to disable notifications in app

Thumbnail display can also be configured for each individual application. Do you conduct secret correspondence in Telegram or WhatsApp? It's time to dig into the Settings of your smartphone.

Let's say you want to hide message text in Telegram . Here's what you need to do:

  • Open iPhone settings.
  • Go to the Notifications section.
  • Next, scroll down to the desired application (in our case, Telegram).
  • Go to it, then tap on Show Thumbnails.
  • Select the desired notification display option.

Turn off thumbnails for an individual application, if needed.

This way you can set up not only instant messengers, but also any other applications. Email client, Messages, Bank application - whatever you want.

Important : When you enable this feature in WhatsApp, user photos will still be displayed on the lock screen.
