How to backup WhatsApp photos, chats and enable security feature

The platform knows that chats are pretty important to users, so it offers an option to keep a history of chats on Google Drive. Users get the option to enable the automatic backup feature for your chats and select its frequency as daily, weekly, or monthly. Here’s everything you need to know about the messaging app.

How to back up WhatsApp chats to Google Drive?

The process is pretty simple and you just need to dig a little deeper into the settings.

Step 1: Just tap on the three-dotted icon, which is visible on the top right corner of the main screen.

Step 2: Just tap on Settings and head to Chats > Chat backup > Back up to Google Drive.

Step 3: Select a backup frequency other than “Never.”

Note: You can set the backup to Daily, Weekly or Monthly. There is also an option to choose “Only when I tap Back up.” We never recommend you to choose this option as you will have to go to the settings every time you remember to back up chats, which gets pretty annoying. It is always better to choose Daily or Weekly option. This way, your chats will automatically get backed up time to time and you won’t have to worry about losing them.

Step 4: Now, select the Google account you would like to back up your chat history to.

Step 5: If you don't have a Google account connected, then you need to tap on “Add account” when prompted and enter your login credentials.

Step 6: Tap Back up over to choose the network you want to use for backups.

Note: Do keep in mind that if you choose to back up over a cellular data network, then you might lose a lot of data. It is always better to back up anything using Wi-Fi and save mobile data for urgent times.

How to enable security feature for WhatsApp backups?

As you will be backing up your chats to a third-party service, WhatsApp allows you to set up an additional layer of security. Users can simply turn on end-to-end encryption for your Google Drive backup.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp and tap on More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.

Step 2: Tap “Turn on.”

Step 3: Now, create a password or use a 64-digit encryption key instead.

Step 4: Tap create to create your end-to-end encrypted backup.

How to Backup your WhatsApp Photos and Videos

With over 2 billion monthly active users, WhatsApp is the most popular mobile messenger app worldwide.

I have been using WhatsApp for several years on my Samsung phone. I backup my WhatsApp files to the "cloud" (Internet) and to my home computer. My latest backup was 3 gigabytes worth of data.

Why should you backup?

1. If you lose your phone or your phone breaks, you can restore your data to another phone (using the same phone number).

2. Over the years you may have accumulated thousands of photos and videos on your phone and you may want to have a copy of them on a disk-on-key or on your computer.

3. You may be running out of space on your phone. Before removing large files (i.e. long videos) you may want to copy them first.

Below are several ways to backup your WhatsApp files. The instructions are based on my Samsung 3 Android phone but the steps are similar for other Android phone systems and the Apple iphone.

Backing up your content to the cloud. This backup is a no-brainer and many people have set this up when they installed WhatsApp on their phone.

WhatsApp (owned by Facebook) has an agreement with Google to allow the application to backup all your files to Google Drive (a free cloud-based storage service that enables users to store and access files online). This means, if you have a Google account (like Gmail) then you also have a Google drive. With that, you can setup WhatsApp to automatically backup your data on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. What is even better is that Google does not count the WhatsApp files against your 15 gigabyte Google drive limit.

Any drawbackups to backing up to Google Drive?

There are a few issues but no show stoppers (in my opinion)

A. The backup puts everything into one big file, which is stored on Google drive. You can only use it to do a full restore of all the files (no partial restore) to your phone or another phone with the same phone number.

B. WhatsApp uses encyption to secure messages and data communications. The backup to Google drive does not use encyption. If you use WhatsApp for secure communications, you may want to think twice about Goole Drive.

C. The backup default is not to include videos (but you can change it).

D. The first time you backup can take a while. I strongly recommend to use the Backup option "using Wi-Fi Only" and be near your own router.

Let's begin:

1. Start your WhatsApp on your phone.

2. Choose Chats

3. On the top right hand corner of chats click the 3 dots.

4. Click Settings.

You will see a setting screen similar to this:

Before Clicking on the Green Back Up icon, make sure you set the backup options:

- Backup to Google Driver: I recommend weekly or daily

- Google Account: Enter the account you want to backup to

- Back up over: Wi-Fi only (before starting the backup, turn on your phone's Wi-Fi and be near your router. )

- Include videos (turn on - move button toward the right.) If this is your first time backing up including videos, expect the backup to take a while.

Notes:
After your first backup, the automated scheduled ones will go quicker. WhatsApp does not do a full backup to Google Drive each time it does an automatic backup. It adds only the new data each time.

If you would like to see the backup file it created, login to your Google Drive at: https://drive.google.com/drive/backups
On the left hand column, choose backups.
You will see your backup listed. The backup name includes your phone number.

Backing up your content to your computer or disk-on-key using Windows file manager 1. Connect your phone to your computer via a USB cable.

2. Using the computer's file manager, open the file directory of your phone. (On Windows 10, hold the Windows Logo key down and press the letter "E")

3. Click your portable device (phone)

4. Click Phone (not SD Card)

5. Scroll down and click the WhatsApp folder

6. There will be three directories: Backups, Database, and Media.

7. You can copy all three to your computer or a disk-on-key

8. If you just want to copy photos, stickers, videos, voice, etc., click Media.

Your images are located in the folder called WhatsApp Images
Your videos are located in the folder called WhatsApp Video
Your stickers are located in the folder called WhatsApp Stickers
(The stickers files can be opened by the free paint program in Windows)

Do Not remove or change any WhatsApp files on your phone. Only remove items via the WhatsApp application.

Copying a single image or video to your computer using WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp Web is a feature that allows you to chat from your browser (i.e., Google Chrome Browser) on your personal computer.

Below are the steps to run the program:

1. Turn on your phone.

2. On your computer open: https://web.whatsapp.com/

3. If this is your first time using WhatsApp Web, the program will display a QR code - a square box with all kinds of markings and a WhatsApp symbol in the middle.

4. Start WhatsApp on your phone.

5. On the main screen choose Chat.

6. On the top right hand corner of chat click the 3 dots.

7. Click WhatsApp Web

8. On the top right hand corner click the Plus sign.

9. A scanning box will appear on the screen.

10. Aim your phone to the QR code on the computer screen.

When your computer syncs with the phone (your must keep your phone on) you can now chat on your computer just like you would on your phone.
When viewing a full size image or video on your computer screen, a down arrow will appear on top right of the screen. Clicking on the down arrow will allow you to save the file to your computer.

How to enable chat backup and restore WhatsApp conversations

Many people often hesitate to delete WhatsApp because they are not sure if they will be able to restore their messages later. There are cases when all correspondence is really deleted, and it is no longer possible to return it. To prevent this from happening, you need to enable WhatsApp message backup : in this case, chats can always be restored. However, this feature is often disabled by default, and if you do not want your correspondence to be permanently deleted, it is better to activate it.

How to enable backup of WhatsApp chats

Follow the steps below to back up WhatsApp chats.

  1. Open WhatsApp, switch to the "Settings" tab

  3. Select "Backup"

  • Turn off all Internet connections (both Wi-Fi and mobile network) on your smartphone

How to backup WhatsApp on a smartphone: instructions for Android and iPhone

If you switched to another smartphone, reset your data unsuccessfully, or simply deleted WhatsApp, you may need to restore all chats. How to do this, we tell in the article.

Copy WhatsApp chats on Android

To backup WhatsApp, the user of the Android device must launch the messenger and follow these steps:

  1. Go to the "Other options" section.
  2. Open settings.
  3. Go to chats.
  4. Select "Backup Chats".
  5. Go to the option to back up information to Google Drive.
  6. Set the frequency at which data will be saved - the default is "Never". You can select "monthly", "weekly" and "daily".

iPhone backup: using iCloud

Another way to backup WhatsApp is for iOS device owners. The data is stored in the iCloud cloud service. To do this, the user must follow a few simple steps:

  1. Open messenger.
  2. Go to the program settings.
  3. Open the "Chats" item.
  4. Select "Backup".
  5. Click on "Create a copy" to get an up-to-date save, or set up an automatic backup by selecting the "Automatic" item and setting the backup frequency. If you want to save the video, check the box next to the corresponding item.

We recommend that you set up saving over a Wi-Fi network. This will reduce the consumption of mobile traffic and reduce the time to create a backup.

For this method to work, the user must be logged in on the iPhone or iPad with the same Apple ID that is used to sign in to iCloud. You also need to activate the iCloud Drive slider in iCloud settings. The required amount of free space in the cloud is 2 times the size of the backup.

Copy of WhatsApp on a computer

If you have an iPhone, you can back up WhatsApp and save data not only on your phone, but also on your computer. All you need is your iPhone, a Windows or macOS computer, a PC sync cable, and an iTunes account. The copying process consists of the following steps:

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer.
  2. Connect a mobile device to the USB port.
  3. Allow connection on phone.
  4. Open an iTunes account using your Apple ID and password.
  5. Click on "Summary" on the left side of the screen and select your device.
  6. In the "Backups" group in the main part of the window, select "This PC".
  7. Click the "Back Up Now" button.

This will create an iTunes backup folder on the PC, downloading all information from the chats. On a Windows PC, it will be located in the Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Mobile Sync\Backup\ directory. On a macOS computer, at Library/Application/Support/Mobile Sync/Backup/. From here they can be restored in case of accidental data loss in messengers.
