How to Change Fonts on Instagram

By Alvin Wanjala

Learn how to use custom fonts where Instagram supports them, and even where it doesn't.

Instagram is fairly limited when it comes to fonts. For instance, there is no official setting that lets you change your Instagram's bio font or even the fonts of your comments. But that doesn't mean that you can't change fonts at all.

In this article, we'll show you different ways to change fonts in your Instagram Stories, bio, comments, and even captions.

How to Change Fonts in Your Text-Based Instagram Stories

One of the easiest things to customize on Instagram is the fonts in your text-based Stories. What makes this easy is that Instagram allows you to choose between a range of fonts by default. There's a total of nine fonts at the time of writing. Here's how to change the font of your text-based Instagram Story:

  1. Tap Your Story in the upper left of your Instagram feed.
  2. Grant Instagram necessary permission if you haven't already.
  3. Select Camera and tap the Aa button on the left. This will open a blank page for creating a text-only Story.
  4. Tap anywhere on the blank page to type. Once you're done, swipe the Aa button to view your text in other font types.
  5. Once you're satisfied with a font, simply tap Next in the top right and select Send to to post your Story.

How to Get New Fonts on Instagram

As mentioned above, you only get access to nine fonts by default. Thanks to enterprising people on the internet, though, you can use fonts that Instagram doesn't support officially. You can do this using Instagram font generator sites. Good examples include Cool Fonts, IGFonts.io, and FontsForInstagram.com.

Using such sites is easy. You just need to copy text from them, and it will retain its font style when you paste it into Instagram. This method gives you access to over 100 fonts, which dwarfs the nine Instagram offers by default.

How to Change Instagram Fonts Using Font Generator Sites

There are many font generator sites, but they all work on a basic principle. You enter the text and copy it to wherever you want. We'll use CoolFont in this tutorial.

  1. Go to Cool Fonts.
  2. Enter your text in the input bar. This could be a comment, caption, or bio you'd like to post on Instagram.
  3. CoolFont will then display your text in a range of font styles. Scroll down to view more options.
  4. Once you've found a font you like, tap the Copy button. Or you can select the text manually by tapping on it and then select Copy from the popup on both Android and iOS. This will copy your text with the new font to your clipboard.
  5. Open Instagram and go anywhere you can enter text.
  6. Tap and hold the input bar and select Paste to enter your preformatted text.

Using this method, you'll be able to change your Instagram bio font, and fonts in comments, Stories, and even captions. While you can pick any font from one of these sites, keep in mind that all fonts are not equal.

Some are great and some will just make your text look funky and hard to read. If you don't like what's available, a site like IGFonts.io lets you create your own.

Use Custom Fonts Across Instagram

Instagram is a great social media platform, but, like other platforms, it does have its cons here and there. One of the cons is the limited access to more fonts natively. Thankfully, even without native support, you can change Instagram fonts for any text you enter on the platform. Font generator sites like Cool Fonts and IGFonts.io allow you to change fonts in Stories, comments, your bio, or any other text.

If you, like me, have shamelessly spent too much time making your Instagram Story just right, I’ve got good, textual news for you. Instagram just released new fonts for Instagram Stories. Time to awaken your inner middle school who typed everything ~*LiKe ThIs*~.

On April 29, 2020, Instagram announced the forthcoming fonts in a tweet. Instagram first tested out the new fonts with a “small percentage of people” and is now making them available to all users. As of today, in addition to the original styles (that aren't going anywhere), there are four new text styles for Instagram Stories.

If you want to access the new fonts, you’ll be able to do so pretty easily:

  • Make sure your Instagram app has the latest update
  • Open the app, swipe over to your Instagram Story, and click on “create” at the bottom of your screen
  • Start typing using the text format. (It should be the default option that pops up.)
  • Scroll through your font options at the bottom. If you have access to the new fonts, you’ll see ten different text options. If not, you’ll only see the original five: Modern, Classic, Neon, and Strong, and Typewriter.

This YouTube tutorial from HiTech Talk gives an easy primer on how to use the new Instagram Story fonts, including how to change color and size. But if you're already familiar with editing text in Instagram Stories, you'll be able to edit and adapt the new fonts with no problem. The new options include a stencil-like text, a new serif font, and something that looks eerily like Comic Sans. (It’s like if Comic Sans dyed its hair but the roots started showing — something’s different but it’s still familiar.) Instagram has yet to release the official names of the new fonts. So, for now, we will call the font Comic Sans Lite.

If you want to give yourself even more options on top of Instagram's new fonts, you can use igfonts.io to create text in different fonts to copy and paste into your Instagram story. That’s how people have 𝖙𝖊𝖝𝖙 𝖑𝖎𝖐𝖊 𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖘 and 𝕥𝕖𝕩𝕥 𝕝𝕚𝕜𝕖 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕤 and ᵗᵉˣᵗ ˡⁱᵏᵉ ᵗʰⁱˢ and even sıɥʇ ǝʞıl ʇxǝʇ. Is it obnoxious? Sure, but really what about Instagram Stories isn’t just a little bit obnoxious.

While you’re checking out the update, there are plenty of other Instagram Story hacks to try out if you’re looking to level up your Stories. You can make Instagram Story photo collages. You can change the background color of your Instagram Story. You can even post your Story to your main Instagram feed if you make something that’s grid-worthy. Here's hoping the new fonts roll out to everyone soon so we can Insta-story our respective lockdown accordingly.

How to change and add your own font to Instagram stories

Instagram's strong point is visual, so all elements are important in the design of a publication: from the background of the cover to the lettering.

The social network offers several fonts for text in stories. Each of them has its own purpose and “mood”, which can change the perception of the entire story.

What fonts are used in Instagram stories

The social network recently increased the number of fonts for stories, and now there are nine of them. Below is a listing of fonts in the order they are placed when editing stories in the application.

  1. The classic font is universal. It is suitable for almost any plot, it is easily perceived by the eye and is neutral.
  1. The modern font is great for headings because it uses only uppercase letters and has the right weight.
  1. Neon font looks like it's illuminated from the inside. If attention is important, this font is perfect, but it is better not to use it in long texts.
  1. Printed font, on the contrary, is good if there is a lot of text in the story. It is clear and well read.
  1. Double font with a shadow looks three-dimensional, has a slope. Recommended for headlines and short phrases.
  1. The creative font has a peculiarity: it looks attractive in Latin, but Russian letters are written in a standard way, without the handwriting effect.
  1. Magazine font makes text look more expensive. He is good at describing reputable companies, major events, glossy chronicles.
  1. Universal upper case can be used almost anywhere. It is distinguished by roundness and great softness in writing.
  1. The classic serif font is ideal for long texts. This font is recommended to be applied on a calm monochromatic background so that the words are clearly visible.

How to change the font on Instagram in Stories

Instagram settings allow you to experiment with fonts, their colors and backgrounds.

In order to change the font in the story, you need to:

  • upload an image or video,
  • select the “Aa” icon at the top of the screen:
  • enter text in the field with the cursor,
  • select one of the nine standard fonts at the bottom of the screen by scrolling them left and right:

The finished inscription can be placed on the substrate. To do this, after entering the text, you need to click on the “A” with stars” icon at the top of the screen. Each font assumes its own substrate, and clicking on this sign offers its options - light, dark, transparent.

  • For a neon font, pressing the background button turns on the “light” for the letters.
  • For a double font, this character adds different variations of the shadow from the characters.
  • Creative Font Underlay looks like a brush stroke.

The font in stories can be changed in size and color. In the first case, you need to adjust the height of the letters using the tool on the left side of the screen, moving the circle up and down:

The color of the inscription changes in the palette located at the top of the screen.

How to add your own font to Instagram stories

It must be admitted that the standard set of fonts for stories is very limited. If you want original writing, you can use special services, applications and bots to generate various fonts.

All of them work on the same principle: you enter your text, choose the font you like, and then copy the finished inscription to the story.

For example, using the site coolsymbol.com, it is easy to form text in the desired style:

  • go to the site,
  • open the “Font generator” tab,
  • enter text in the “Input text” window,
  • select the style,
  • click “Copy”:
  • paste the copied into the story.

Instagram secret font in stories

The social network has prepared a surprise for its users: it turns out that nine standard fonts hide a secret tenth font.

To get it, you need to:

  • select the sixth font in the story editor,
  • enter the word “papyrus” , after which the font will automatically change,
  • then type the text with a new font.

⚠ But for the secret font to work, stories need to be created in Latin and only from the iPhone.

Why are there no new fonts in Instagram stories? What to do? ~

Many Instagram fans have been using different fonts in their stories for a long time, but everything is the same for you? Why are there no new fonts in Instagram stories? And what to do with it?

Basic Functions

Initially, several fonts were available when creating stories: modern, typewriter, with italics that glowed with neon.

But standard fonts were not enough for bloggers and popular personalities. They wanted to stand out from the crowd and decided to look for something new in other applications for photo and video editing.

Instagram developers did not stand aside. More recently, they have released several new fonts. Only now they did not appear at all at once.

Why has someone been writing beautiful text in stories for a long time, while someone has nothing? Although there have already been several updates to the program.

What to do is useless

This is a problem on the Instagram side, not on the user.

  • Do not reinstall the application.
  • It won't help at all rebooting the phone, it's all about social network updates.
  • Account creation date does not affect the availability of new features .
  • You don't need to login from other devices.

1 option

Instagram is such a strange thing that it introduces its innovations gradually and not all at once. It is for this reason that 1 user can get new features instantly. And 2 people have to languish in anticipation.

What to do? Just wait until an update arrives from the system itself, and not an update of the application.

In the meantime, beautiful text can be superimposed in almost any photo editing application.

Option 2

If you really urgently need this function, you can try to write to Instagram technical support. This is very easy to do:

Settings - Help (or Help) - Report a problem - Something does not work - describe the problem.

3rd option

This option is not for everyone. But if you don't really value your account, you can start a new one. Most freshregs immediately have access to all functions.
