Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff.
I’ll spare you the exact details and reasons why, but I recently had to change my phone number. I also used the opportunity to get a new device.
In the early days of smartphones, this was about as stress-inducing as consumer decisions could get. Upgrading your phone would require hours of reinstalling apps, upgrading firmware, and so on. Getting a new number too only adds to the headache.

One of the main challenges when upgrading your phone is migrating your WhatsApp chat histories to your new device. It’s very simple if you’re going iPhone to iPhone, or Android to Android and keeping your phone number. But things start to get a little more challenging when your digits change too.
Lucky for you, I have the answers and am here to make your life easier.
I should point out I upgraded from a Samsung Galaxy S7 to the S10. Not only did I stay within Android’s ecosystem, I stayed within Samsung’s too. However, I don’t believe this affects the process; I’ll update this guide if I learn of any other factors to account for. Here’s how to go about it:
What you’ll need:
- Your current phone, with current number
- Your new device
- Your new SIM card and number
- Make sure all your devices are charged up
Step one
First things first, backup your WhatsApp chat history on your current phone, under your current number. Do both local and Google Drive backups.
Find this in: Settings > Chats > Chat Backup

Step two
Install your new SIM card into your new device.I’ve found the best way to go about things is, don’t add any accounts just yet, in fact, I found it best to turn data and WiFi off entirely.
Switch on your new phone so it can receive text messages, though.
Step three
Once your current (old) phone is done backing up, you will need to change the phone number in your WhatsApp account to your new one on that (old) device.
Go to: Settings > Account > Change Number, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Enter this code into your current (now old) phone. This pairs your WhatsApp account (and all your current chat histories) to your new number.
Step four
Repeat step one and perform a backup of your chat histories. In the background, WhatsApp will associate this new backup with your new phone number.
Make sure you also upload the backup to your Google Drive account, as this is where you’ll restore your chats from.
Step five
Turn WiFi on, and install WhatsApp on your new phone, and log in with your new phone number — make sure it’s picked up the right account. WhatsApp will then give you the option to restore your chat history.

When this is complete, WhatsApp will log you out of your old device, and all your chat histories will appear on your new device as they were before. In my case, it was like nothing had changed at all! Smooth!
In recent years, phone makers have definitely made it far easier to migrate to new devices.
Honestly, I was expecting migrating WhatsApp to be a royal pain in the ass, but it turned out to be super easy, and it took less than 15 minutes. If you’re thinking about a new phone and a new number, I wouldn’t worry about it.
I performed the above process last night, and it work perfectly for me.
If you have any other tips or tricks people should know about when migrating their WhatsApp to a new device and number, feel free to email me at [email protected] and I’ll add them to this article.

How to transfer WhatsApp messages to a new smartphone
You can transfer your WhatsApp chat history to a new Android smartphone so you can continue chatting with your friends without losing your old messages. We will show three ways to help you do this.
When you change your smartphone, it becomes necessary to transfer WhatsApp data from one gadget to another. This feature is provided in the messenger itself, and there are several ways to do it. Let's talk about everything in order.
We use special software
There are several specialized services for the complete transfer of information. We liked iCareFone for Whatsapp transfer from the developer Tenorshare: it allows you to carry out, among other things, a cross-platform transfer (for example, from Android to iPhone). To do this, you need a laptop or computer and, in fact, two smartphones.
1. Connect both gadgets to the computer and click the "Transfer" button.
2. The program will back up the data. Then you will need to click "Continue".
3. To verify that the WhatsApp account belongs to you, you will need to enter the phone number to which it is linked.
4. If the number is entered correctly, data copying will start. The process usually takes several minutes. After the end, you will see something like this window.
As you can see, nothing complicated.
Backing up to Google Drive
Backing up WhatsApp chatsBefore transferring chats to a new smartphone, you must manually back them up on your old phone. To do this, proceed as follows.
- Open Whatsapp and select "Settings" in the upper right corner of the menu.
- In the category "Chats" you will find the item "Backup of chats".
- Click the "Save" button to save the current chat history.
- To create a manual backup, click the green "Backup" button. To automatically create a backup, open the Backup to Google Drive section and select the interval that suits you.
- If you had a backup copy of chats created in this way, then when installing on a new smartphone, WhatsApp will automatically download all available messages.
Copying a local backup from storage
The local backup of chats on an Android smartphone is located in the WhatsApp / Databases folder. It can be in local memory or on an SD card. The backup is named "msgstore.db.crypt".
If you connect your phone to a PC with a USB cable, you can copy this file to your computer and then transfer it to your new phone. Accessing this file is even easier with a file manager like ES File Explorer. With it, you can immediately send a file to a new phone via email, Bluetooth or cloud storage.
To download old chats, copy the "msgstore.db.crypt" file to the WhatsApp / Databases folder on the new smartphone, and start WhatsApp. A backup copy of the messages will be downloaded automatically.

How to recover WhatsApp conversations on iPhone using Tenorshare UltData or from backups
WhatsApp is one of the largest instant messengers. Through it, people around the world communicate both at work and on personal matters. But whatever the subject of conversation, the loss of correspondence is unpleasant. However, this still happens, so it is useful to know what are the ways to recover deleted messages in WhatsApp. Here's how to do it on iPhone.
Method 1: Restore deleted messages from WhatsApp iCloud backup
WhatsApp conversation history is not stored on the servers of the service itself, but you can use the backup that the application places in the iCloud cloud to backup and restore the chat history. But you need to understand that in this case it will not be possible to preview the correspondence and select the necessary elements.
Step 1: Enable automatic backup
First of all, you need to make sure that automatic backup is enabled. You can check that this is the case by going to WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
Step 2: Recover Chat History
Now uninstall WhatsApp on your iPhone and reinstall it from the App Store, then verify your phone number. After a successful login, a welcome notification will appear asking you to restore your chat history. Just select the "Restore Chat History" option and the recovery process will begin. When it completes, the number of recovered messages will be displayed.
Method 2: Selectively recover deleted WhatsApp messages on iPhone even if there is no backup
Tenorshare UltData is a powerful data recovery tool not only for WhatsApp but also for many other types of data. Whether it was lost due to accidental deletion or malware attack, Tenorshare UltData can perfectly recover lost data. In addition, you can recover deleted data both directly from iPhone and from iCloud and iTunes backups.
This tool is compatible with Mac and Windows operating systems and supports more than 20 types of data, including WhatsApp deleted data.
How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages on iPhone with Tenorshare UltData:
Step 1. Launch the program
If you don't have UltData, please download and install it on your computer. Then connect your iPhone with a USB cable. Click "Recover from iOS Device" and let the program detect your iPhone. After a successful discovery, all types of data on your iPhone will be displayed on the screen.
Step 2: Scan
Select "WhatsApp and attachments" from the list of data types displayed on the screen. At the bottom of the screen, click the "Start Scan" button.
Step 3: Restore
After the scanning process is completed successfully, the interface will display a list of deleted items. Tick the WhatsApp related options in the left panel (messages and/or attachments) and then view those deleted messages. Select what you want to restore and click the desired Restore button at the bottom of the screen.
Method 3: Restore deleted WhatsApp chat from iTunes backup
This method is suitable for those who regularly back up their iPhone to iTunes. The process of restoring WhatsApp messages from iTunes backups is quite simple, but only the last three backups are available for restoration.
