How to Set Up Two WhatsApp Accounts on Your iPhone

By Denise Lim

Here’s how to add a second WhatsApp account to your iPhone, but only if you have a second phone number to link it to.

WhatsApp is a highly popular messaging app. So popular that you may want to have more than one account, to help separate your work and personal life. WhatsApp doesn’t let you have two accounts by default, but there are ways around the restriction.

Let’s look at how you can get two WhatsApp accounts on one iPhone.

Use WhatsApp Business to Set Up a Second Account

Many people use the WhatsApp Business app to connect to their clients and customers. With WhatsApp, setting up a second account for business is easy and free. However, the following method only works if you use Dual SIM on your iPhone or an active SIM card on another device.

  1. Open WhatsApp Business. Select Agree & Continue to accept the Terms of Service.
  2. Select Use a different number.
  3. Type in your second SIM’s phone number. Tap Done.
  4. Select Yes to confirm the number.
  5. Key in the verification code sent to your device.
  6. Tap Skip Restore if there’s no previous iCloud backup available.

That’s all! You now have a second WhatsApp account that’s completely separate from your current one. You can start sending and receiving messages, make WhatsApp calls, create groups, and more.

Use the Whats up App to Mirror a Second Account

If you feel that WhatsApp Business is too formal, an alternative app is the Whats up app. This app serves as a mirror to another device that already has an existing WhatsApp account.

First, download Whats up from the App Store. Next, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Whats up app and select the Dual tab. This leads you to a mobile version of WhatsApp Web.
  2. On your second device, go to WhatsApp Messenger.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Tap Link a Device to scan the QR code on your iPhone screen.

You have now set up your second WhatsApp account on Whats up. To use your first account, simply go to your iPhone’s WhatsApp app as usual. Then use the Whats up app to use your second account.

Whats up’s main disadvantage is that it has a lot of ads. However, compared to most dual WhatsApp apps on the App Store, Whats up’s messaging interface is perfectly fitted for mobile.

The other apps are less user-friendly because they display the desktop version of WhatsApp Web. You’ll end up having to zoom in and out to read and type your messages.

Can You Get Two WhatsApp Accounts With Same Phone Number?

Unfortunately, you can’t use two WhatsApp accounts that are simultaneously linked to the same phone number.

For example, if you attempt to set up WhatsApp Business with your WhatsApp Messenger number, that number will be disconnected from the old app. All your WhatsApp Messenger conversations will be moved to WhatsApp Business, and vice versa.

If you apply the steps for Whats up on the same number, you’ll only get an exact copy of your existing WhatsApp Messenger. For instance, any new messages, regardless of where you sent or received them, will show up on both apps.

Using Dual WhatsApp on Your iPhone

There are limitations to having two WhatsApp accounts on your iPhone. At the moment, using the same phone number on the same device is not possible. But you can have two WhatsApp accounts as long as they are linked to different phone numbers.

On the other hand, there are ways to use the same WhatsApp account across multiple devices if you want a different type of flexibility.

On the iPhone, you can have two WhatsApp accounts running simultaneously similar to most Android phones. There’s a catch though.

If you use an Android phone, there's an easy way to have two WhatsApp accounts simultaneously. Most phones from Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, Oppo and few others offer the “Dual apps” or “Parallel apps” feature. This allows users to create a second profile for the particular app and have it registered on the second SIM card. There are several third-party apps on the Play Store for the purpose. That's not the case with the iPhone though.

On iOS, Apple does not allow one to have two profiles of the same apps. Hence, unless the app developer decides to incorporate the feature natively within the app, there's no official way to have two WhatsApp accounts running on one iPhone. But what if we say there is a clever trick and all it requires is installing WhatsApp Business on your iPhone.

Turns out that you can install both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business on your iPhone and make them run two different accounts simultaneously. Obviously, one of your accounts will be converted into a business account fin order to make that happen.

Step 3: Install the WhatsApp Business app from the App Store.

Step 4: Once it installs, open it and put in your other/secondary phone number.

Step 5: The registration process is similar to regular WhatsApp login. Complete the on-screen instructions.
