WhatsApp is the most used messaging application worldwide, and through it lot of personal information is exchanged both in the form of messages and media files.

Losing your mobile phone or getting it stolen is the worst thing that can happen, as all your exchanged media and messages go with it. If you have lost your mobile it is still possible to find and retrieve it thanks to the GPS technology with which most iPhone and Android are equipped, but in the meantime it is wise to disable WhatsApp account to stay on the safe side.

Hi I’m Frankie, your guide on MessagingAppLab. com, and here’s a step-by-step guide to deactivate your WhatsApp account easily.

How to deactivate your WhatsApp account in case of theft or loss

The first thing to do is to call your mobile operator and report the loss of your SIM card. Then, proceed to deactivate your WhatsApp account by sending an email to the technical assistance of WhatsApp and the process will be performed automatically.

After disabling your WhatsApp account, your contacts can continue sending messages to your phone number for the following 30 days, and you can receive them once you’ve re-activated your account on another mobile. However, if after those 30 days the account has not been activated on another device, all the messages will be deleted automatically.

In these cases of theft or loss you should follow these steps to disable the account:

  • Write a new email message to [email protected]
  • Write in the email subject: “Phone stolen/lost: Please disable my account. ”
  • Add in the body message the phone number associated with the WhatsApp account with the country code. For example: +44 666555444 (UK numbers)

It may take a couple of days to receive a response. Have patience though, as they will get in touch.

How to delete a WhatsApp account

If you want to delete permanently your account you should be aware that all contacts and everything associated with it will be irreversibly canceled. The following information is all that disappears:

  • Message history (is completely removed from the device)
  • Groups and contacts
  • Backups, including those stored in Google Drive
  • Synchronized contacts will dissociate from the app

If you really want to delete your account permanently, open WhatsApp, and go to Settings > Account > Delete My Account. Enter your phone number associated with WhatsApp and click on the red button “Delete my account“.

Answer

To deactivate your account on the phone that is being used by someone else, you will need a new SIM card and to connect it to WhatsApp with the same number. You cannot use this method if your old phone still has an active connection.

How To WhatsApp Lost and stolen phones Account

Deleting your WhatsApp account requires you to make an update to the messaging app on your device. To do so, please follow these steps:

1. Go to Settings > Accounts and Sync > Facebook (or Google) > Remove Account. For Apple iPhone users: go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management> Facebook (or Google), then tap “Delete App” followed by “Remove profile”. 2. Restart your phone 3. Download and install WhatsApp again using the same phone number used when creating the previous account 4. Open WhatsApp and select “Restore” or “Continue”, if prompted 5. Enter your new password 6. Once you have completed these steps successfully, delete your original version of WhatsApp 7. Download and install WhatsApp on your new phone

Note: Apple iPhone users will need to repeat Steps 2 through 5 using the same phone number. All other devices can use the same account log-in information.

As noted above, please note that we are unable to assist you with deleting your account from a different device. For more information about how to delete an app on your smartphone, please refer to the documentation for your particular device.

How do I delete my WhatsApp account when switching phones?

If you’ve had your phone for some time, it’s likely that there is already data stored within it such as contacts or photos (and maybe even videos), all of which would be lost when you uninstall WhatsApp itself during this process. To ensure that you do not lose any important information, please follow the appropriate steps depending on your operating system:

iPhone/iPad delete WhatsApp contacts and media files :

If you’re looking to delete all of your data from your WhatsApp account before uninstalling (for example, if you want to sell or pass on your device), then we recommend following the steps below. Please note that this will also delete all of your media content from within WhatsApp such as photos, videos, voice notes, etc.

1. Go through the normal deletion process explained above but this time select the “Delete my Account” option at Step 4 2. Follow steps until you reach Step 6 3. Before continuing to the next step, open “Settings > Applications”, scroll down until you see WhatsApp listed there (this may take a while as every installed app is listed here), then tap on it and select “Uninstall”. 4. Now complete the account deletion process 5. When you’re done with this, your phone will be completely reset

Once you’ve deleted your WhatsApp account from one of your phones, all messages sent and received on WhatsApp prior to deleting will still be stored in the chat history. This information may also show up on some other devices registered to that account; if so, please simply delete those conversations. If you wish to disable notifications for a device that is no longer connected to your WhatsApp account, go through Steps 1 and 2 above and then select “Delete my Account” but do NOT complete Steps 3 – 6 to avoid losing any data. You can always re-activate or register a new number at a later time if needed.

About uninstalling apps on your phone or tablet?

Uninstalling WhatsApp from a smartphone will not delete any of the data stored within it. Please see the question “How do I delete my WhatsApp account when switching phones?” for more information.

When you uninstall an app from your iOS device, it is automatically deleted from both the device itself and all other devices that were signed in to that same iTunes account (including Macs or PCs). If you would like to use WhatsApp on multiple devices (for example, if you have multiple smartphones), then simply sign out of your iTunes account on any additional devices before uninstalling/deleting the app using normal Apple procedures. We recommend doing this to avoid potential issues with syncing.

As new features are added to WhatsApp, you will need to download and install them so that you can continue using the app. If you choose not to update your app, some features may no longer be available.

If an update fails or doesn’t seem necessary for your device, then you can opt-out of receiving updates on any iOS device by following these steps:

We recommend uninstalling or deleting the app from your old phone before installing it onto your new phone, but if you can’t complete this process for some reason (e.g., you don’t have internet access on the old device so can’t uninstall the app), then please follow these steps:

I don’t want to use my real name on WhatsApp anymore

We understand that privacy is important and it should always be respected so we let you chose if you would like to display your real name or alias in your profile info section of WhatsApp. Please note that this setting will not affect other people’s ability to search for and find you within their address book (if they have enabled this setting). If you change this setting after someone has added your number, then they continue to see your name as it was previously listed in their address book.

If you change this setting and still wish to use a specific alias, it’s important that you update your profile information again so others can find the new information.

There are two ways of updating your profile info?

1) Open WhatsApp and tap on “Menu” > Tap on “Profile” > Change your Name here 2) You can also go through the normal deletion process explained above but choose the “Delete my Account” option at Step 4 and then complete Steps 5-6 described there 3) Go back to Settings > General > Reset, scroll down until you see the “Reset Network Settings” option, tap on it and select the “Erase iPhone/iPad” option. Your device will reset and you can now set up a new WhatsApp account

We give you the choice on whether or not you want to share your location with others but if you change your mind about this setting and would like to stop sharing your location data, please follow these instructions:

1) Open WhatsApp and tap on “Menu” > Tap on “Settings” 2) Scroll down until you see “WhatsApp Web”, select it 3) You’ll now be taken directly to the “Share My Location” page where we explain what information is shared when someone sees that you are online 4) To update the setting, tap on the “Cancel” button at the bottom of this page 5) If you still want to share your location data, then tap on the “OK” button instead 6) In any case, now that you’ve updated this setting, there’s nothing else for you to do and WhatsApp will use your new choice whenever possible.
