10 Ways to Create Picture Perfect Posts on Instagram

I recently partnered with my friends at Sprout Social for an Instagram 101 webinar called 10 Ways to Create Picture Perfect Posts on Instagram. I've created a summary of the webinar with all the links so that you can try my tips to help improve your own Instagram.

Jammed packed with actionable tips, this article will help you get a better grasp on Instagram and provide tips to help you start getting glam on Instagram.

I'm going to share:

  • How to create an Instagram strategy
  • Using hashtags on Instagram
  • Social media shortcuts – creating a workflow for your Instagram posts
  • Easy-to-use apps to edit photos

Here's the webinar presentation that I created on Slide Share.

10 Ways to Create Picture Perfect Posts on Instagram from Peg Fitzpatrick

#1 Focus

The first step in a successful Instagram strategy is figuring out your goal for your social media presence on Instagram.

Start with a goal. What do you hope to gain by using Instagram? Do you want to create a visual portfolio of your work? Give customers a behind the scenes peek at what you do? Or maybe show a more personal side? Without a clear goal, you won’t be able to plan your posts.

  • Why are you investing your time on Instagram?
  • Who are the people that you want to reach?
  • What are your goals for your content? Visibility? Blog traffic? Sales of your product or service?

Create a persona for your ideal Instagram audience. Make a list of who you think will buy your product, service, and be interested in focus your content for this group of people. You can use your blog demographics, Facebook insights, Google analytics, etc. There's a lot of information to use to create your solid plan.

#2 Develop a story

Create a targeted niche for your Instagram presence. This allows people to know what to expect by following you and if they should follow you.

Tell a visual story of your brand using these techniques:

  • Cohesive style of images or graphics
  • Branded images
  • Same color palette

Create separate accounts if you have more than one niche. My friend Sue Zimmerman has six accounts to cover her different business focuses. She’s increasing her business because customers of her store and clients for her social media consulting find her with hashtags.

A note of caution – only open accounts that you have time to manage well and that you have a plan for maintenance.

I've been hesitant to create separate niche accounts but I'll soon be launching an Instagram account for My.BookClub. My Book Club has it's own branding, logo, and topic but I wanted to make sure that I had everything in place before I publicly opened it. I'll build out the profile with content before I start sharing it. If you want to see what I have so far, this is my work-in-progess: My. BookClub Instagram account.

#3 Snap pics

Of course you're going to need photos for your Instagram posts. Make sure when you're taking photos that you take lots more than you think you'll need. It seems like you're overshooting but when you go back and look, you may have only taken two or three photos. You can always delete the photos that you don't like later.

Think like an editor! Create a stockpile of photos that you can use to design posts for over time. If you're taking photos at a cafe of your friends look around for other interesting shoots like the bookshelves, collections of eclectic coffee cups, or the hipster baristas.

I took all the photos used in this post and the presentation on a trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina on a street art tour several years ago. You never know what future projects you'll have so take lots of great photos and you'll thank yourself later.

Shooting your images in 1:1 ratio or square helps you to get the composition of the photo correct. You can change the settings on your phone and many cameras to shoot square images. Give it a shot. (pun intended)

#4 Edit and crop

Editing and cropping can make or break your photos. Nailing down your style for Instagram can take some time but once you find what works for you, stick with it.

These are a few of my favorite apps:

PS Express for iOS and Android

“Photo editing made fun, fast, and easy. Touch your way to better-looking iPhone pictures using slide bar adjustments, or let automatic one-touch fixes do it for you.”

Snapseed for iOS and Android

“Perfect your photos in a snap with the new Snapseed 2.0. This app brings to your mobile device the power and control of professional photo editing software, previously only available on the desktop. Now with the tap of a finger you can retouch, adjust perspective, re-edit, and more.”

Over for iOS and Android

“Over is the app for adding text and artwork to your photos. Designed with mobile creatives in mind, Over features standard and custom-made fonts and well-crafted artwork combined with a sleek design, easy-to-use functionality, and immediate sharing ability.”

WordSwag for iOS

“Create amazing text layouts that would normally take minutes – or even hours in Photoshop – with just a tap.”

#5 Filter it

Filtering can help to create a cohesive, stylized brand for your photos. If you find or create a filter you love in Canva, save the filter code to reuse in your projects. Here's a quick video on how to do that:

Or you can choose no filters and use the #nofilter hashtag. Be honest when you post because savvy Instagrammers will know!

Instagram has a wonderful set of built in filters for you to use. I recommend shooting your photos outside of Instagram so they save to your camera roll and then bringing them into to filter.

Power tip: you can rearrange your filters by dragging them in the app so put your faves on the left hand side for easy access. This will help you be consistent with your filter and find them easily.

Afterlight for iOS and Android

“Afterlight is the perfect image editing app for quick and straight forward editing. Our simple design, paired with powerful and snappy tools, will give you the look you want in seconds.”

#6 Style it

Think theme and groups! Very successful Instagrammers think in terms of the grid. The grid is the top six photos that show on your Instagram profile. Michelle Phan's Instagram is a thing of beauty as she color-styles her grid by project and sticks to a color theme.

There are apps that you can use to create big tiled images on Instagram that take up six grids.

Instagram created Layout which is an app that you can use to create collages for Instagram or other social networks. To create a Layout:

When you open Layout, you can tap All to see every photo on your phone, Faces to to see only the photos with people's faces or Recents to see up to 30 of your most recently used photos. To create a layout:

  1. Scroll through your photos and tap up to 9 photos you want to include. You’ll see a on the photos you’ve chosen.
  2. Once you’ve selected all of the photos you want, tap the layout you like best from the top of the screen.
  3. Tap any of the images in the layout to edit that image. When you're finished editing tapSave and choose whether to share your layout or to save it to your camera roll.

#7 Hashtag it

Consider hashtags the glue that holds social conversations and ideas together.

Clicking on a hashtag can provide a wealth of information and a sea of potential connections. Here’s a few ways that hashtags can be used:

  • Real-time interaction with friends, fans, and influencers
  • Reenforce your area of expertise
  • Connect with other people interested in the same topic
  • Create a social media campaign
  • Brand awareness
  • Catch the trends – daily, weekly, or holiday
  • Find valuable UGC (user generated content)
  • Rock out live events such as conferences
  • Build out a social contest

Create a hashtag strategy. You can use up to 30 hashtags per post. Post a few in the original post and add more in the comments. Use industry specific hashtags and create your own if you have a fun brand. If you have a special hashtag, make sure you share it in your profile for visibility. You can find popular hashtags on websites and load apps that can help you.

Prepare for success. Save your hashtags to Evernote so that you can access them on any device. Create groups of hashtags for different topics such as creativity, travel, and inspiration. It’s also helpful when you’re at an event.

Use only relevant hashtags. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT use popular hashtags that have nothing at all to do with your content. It's extremely spammy and Instagrammers will unfollow in a snap. My friend Sue uses this post to illustrate her point about how to use hashtags the right way.

#8 Post with purpose

Don't just post to post on Instagram or anywhere for that matter. Instagrammers are quick to unfollow and don't have patience for crummy content. Spread your posts out to give them time to breathe and post with purpose!

Does your post do one or more of the following?

  • Educate
  • Inform
  • Entertain

What unique value are you adding to social space? Give people a reason to follow you by adding value with your content.

#9 Engage

Instagram is THE place where brands are getting the more engagement with their social media content. A recent study Forrester found “that top brands’ Instagram posts generated a per-follower engagement rate of 4.21%. That means Instagram delivered these brands 58 times more engagement per follower than Facebook, and 120 times more engagement per follower than Twitter.”

Asking questions is a great way to invite conversations with people that follow you. A few types that you can try:

  • True or false
  • Ask for people's favorite something in a certain topic
  • This or that
  • Did you know?

#10 Build your tribe

Building your tribe is easy to do on Instagram using hashtags in your niche. Search on Instagram or use Iconosquare to find people that are using the same hashtags and discover new conversations to join. This search for #socialmediatips shows there are over 15,000 posts in the hashtag and also shows six related hashtags that you can investigate.

From Sprout Social's blog, “Just as you monitor branded hashtags, you can identify popular hashtags in your industry to monitor for engagement and use in your own posts. Join new conversations related to your brand by searching results for the hashtags you use, then examining hashtags used by people sharing similar content.”

Follow interesting people in your niche when you find them and engage with their posts when you follow them. To grow your tribe, follow 20 to 30 new people every day. This will help add great content to your home stream when you're scrolling through.

Bonus!

Here's the workflow that I use for Instagram to use graphics and images that I create on my laptop to get the to my phone or iPad to post on Instagram.

I use Trello for my Instagram and Facebook Mentions post optimization. This way I can add the text that I want from my desktop and not worry about posting from my iPhone and not being able to see the full post while I'm adding text. You can try Trello here – it's free and easy to use. I like it because it works seamlessly in the cloud moving my information on my desktop to my phone or tablet. It's made posting longer posts much for efficient for me.

In Trello, you create different boards for project and each board can be filled with lists and you add cards to the lists. It's super organized. (more about it here)

This is what my Trello Instagram WorkFlow board looks like:

I start by creating my image or graphic, then I add it to a card in Trello. Once I add the image, I can add the text for my Instagram post in a comment. These save to my Trello board and I can go to my phone to post. You can plan ahead and create your Instagram content in a batch and then share them when the fit into your editorial calendar.

This is what my Instagram post card looks like in Trello. You can add a checklist to your cards for super organization. You can also work with a team on Trello so they can add images or texts to Trello that can be shared.

But in the second paragraph, a list of accounts of other social networks for sharing appears, and in the first option, the smartphone menu opens.

In the post menu (where there are three dots), click the "Share" or "Copy link" item. In the web version of Instagram*, it is generally possible to copy the code to embed a post on the site:

how to write in 2021 + examples

If you have entered this article, then there are two options: either you are already writing posts, but for some reason they do not enter, or you are just going to write. This article will help in both the first and second situations. I will tell you how to write posts on Instagram to influence the audience through texts.

How to write for Instagram

There is no single formula on how to write profile posts correctly. Just like there are no topics for which you need to write on Instagram, and for which you don’t. Everything is individual. The main thing is to focus on your audience, test texts, look at statistics, find out what users get more. By the way, our article will help you with this, I will leave it below. And now I’ll tell you how to serve content to subscribers so that it gets a response.

Tip #1. Stick to structure

A clear structure will allow the reader to quickly swallow the post, benefit from it, and wait for the next one. Otherwise, he will simply throw it in half.

Life hack 1: When writing a post, first bring the reader up to date, identify the problem, describe its details, show the solution and draw a conclusion.

Life hack 2: Do not ignore the working formulas of the selling text, use what has already been tested and 100% works. And yes, you don't have to search the Internet for anything. How to write selling posts on the social network, we have already written in the article.

Tip #2. Break the post into parts

This way you will make it as convenient as possible for the reader. No one will read a continuous canvas, so select paragraphs, alternate their size. Follow the rule one paragraph = one complete thought. But this does not mean that it should just end, make a smooth transition to the next one.

Highlighting paragraphs

Life hack 1: As an option - breaking the text into paragraphs with subheadings. These can be, for example, the main questions that the paragraph answers: why, how to use, where to buy, etc.

Life hack 2: Use text4instabot. This is a Telegram bot to which you send text with paragraphs written in notes, documents, any editor, and it will automatically fill in the necessary spaces, paragraphs and send you a text ready for publication.

If writing text is difficult, read our article about ready-made posts for instagram

Tip # 3. Find "brand voice "

Or "Tone of voice". The concept includes a greeting, acceptable humor, recognizable phrases, etc. Tone of voice will help you better understand your readers and potential customers and bring you closer to your audience. The use, for example, of phrases that are familiar only to a narrow circle of people, gives the client the impression that he is chosen and special.

Your style

Life hack 1: Personalize your text. Come up with an appeal to your subscribers and always use them in publications, for example, "beginning designer", "for all capricorns", bloggers often call their followers by their own name - "evleychiki".

Life hack 2: Write messages in the text with hashtags. So the publication can be easily found among others if your account is suddenly lost (accidentally unsubscribed, changed profile) or they want to find a post, but do not know your profile.

Tip #4. Develop other topics

Get involved yourself, choose not only professional topics, but also those that are of interest to you. The audience immediately feels if the author sincerely burns with what he is talking about.

Various topics

Life hack 1: Tell us about your hobby. If you teach people, for example, targeting, this does not mean that you do not have hobbies and talents. It will be great if you link this topic to the main one in the profile. For example, give recommendations on how to set up the same target if a person is engaged in the creation of resin products and wants to sell them.

Life hack 2: If the account was created for a company/shop, then show in the posts the hobbies and achievements of employees outside of corporate life, and how they did not prevent them from succeeding at work.

Life hack 3: You can get the first likes for a post through Bosslike services. This is safe, and it will already encourage subscribers to like your post too.

Tip #5. Keep it simple

Instagram is not a platform where people come to read abstruse metaphors and kilometer sentences. They go to the social network to escape from work, have fun and find communication. Therefore, write in an easy, simple and understandable language.

Plain text

Life hack 1: Speak what you would like to state in a post for recording - video or voice. In this format, your manner will be more natural, and the sentences will be simple as in a conversation.

Life hack 2: If you use professional narrow terms and you can’t do without them, be sure to explain their meaning in simple language.

Tip #6. Use hashtags

An old trick, but for some reason they forget about it. They will help you get good coverage and get featured, but only if they are relevant to the topic of your post. Then users who are interested in what you offer will be able to find you. Write under the photo hashtags related to your activity, company, product.

Hashtags

Life hack 1: Use low-frequency tags under which less than 10 thousand publications are posted, or medium-frequency tags from 10 to 500 thousand. A couple of high-frequency ones are also possible, but do not get carried away with them so as not to get into the shadowban.

Life hack 2: In addition to words, write hashtags as phrases. You can write two words not only together, but also separately, for example, using underscores, numbers, emoji.

Related:

Tip #7. Highlight enumerations

Make it a list and number or highlight with dashes, dots or checkmarks and so on. This makes it very easy to understand. By the way, after each line, put an invisible space, otherwise the whole structure will move out.

Lists in post

Life hack 1: In addition to the standard highlights, use the same emoji or relevant emoji for each item.

Life hack 2: As an option - highlight the keyword or phrase at the beginning of the list with caps and put a full stop, because some of the readers have enough of this, or maybe they already know.

Tip #8. Use a separate line

Place it in your post to grab the reader's eye. But this will only work if there is a large amount of text before and after a single line or word.

Spot selection

Life hack 1: Highlight the key moment of the publication in this way. This may be the main idea, or an offer for the client in the form of a discount, bonus, etc.

Life hack 2: There are not so many ways to highlight text on Instagram, for a separate line, use caps and screaming emoticons - warning signs, red circles, paper clips, etc.

Tip #9. Write for your target audience

That is, on topics that are of interest to your target audience. To find out, go to your most active followers and see who they follow. So you will understand what topics to add to the content plan.

What is interesting to the audience

Life hack 1: Arrange a poll in stories, offer subscribers a choice of 4 topics. Then analyze and rely on this data when choosing topics for posts.

Life hack 2: Go to your competitors and view their feed. Choose those publications under which there are a lot of comments - reasoning, if there is a discussion - then the topic is interesting. Just remember to adapt them for your blog.

Interesting. Do you want to collaborate with a blogger, but are you worried that he is winding up his statistics? Then we recommend TrendHero. The service will show the real activity in the profile and compare the interests of your target audience and the target audience of the blogger of interest. And you will also see the quality of his posts and stories by reach. Click and check -> TrendHero

Tip #10. Cling with the first paragraphs

They determine whether the entire text will be read. Therefore, create intrigue, show undeniable benefits. And all this takes about 15 seconds.

First paragraph

Life hack 1: Start the post with the fear and problems of the client, this emotion will definitely provoke him to read, for example: "After 30, the skin loses its elasticity, wrinkles and sagging of the face oval are inevitable. A woman loses her former attractiveness."

Life hack 2: Tie the beginning of the post to an newsbreak that somehow touched you as a company or personal brand. A simple example is the innovations in the store due to quarantine.

Tip #11. Write regularly

This is how you accustom your audience to a certain pace, and they will wait for your posts. Please note that the frequency of text output should be within your reach. Don't go for quantity, go for quality.

Post plan

Life hack 1: Use a content plan - a pre-arranged schedule for publishing posts with already selected content for a certain period. So you will not puzzle over what to post tomorrow, you will be able to analyze what went better and what is worse, and you will post a variety of content.

Life hack 2: To avoid delays in your publications, use auto-posting services, for example, Smmplanner. In them, you will prepare a post in advance, and the service will upload it to Instagram at the time and day you need.

Tip #12. Write long reads

Yes, people scroll through Instagram quickly, and perhaps a large text catches few people, but you can’t do without long read posts. This is an opportunity for the company/personal brand to show how good you are at what you do. Reviews, instructions, cases, investigations are easily placed in such material. And of course, you can successfully sell through it.

Part of the longread

Life hack 1: Break long posts into several, create intrigue by writing in the text - continued in the next post. So the audience will not get tired and will wait for the next publication.

Life hack 2: Add brief information about those readers for whom the longread will be useful. Then more readings will come from the target audience. For example, "A post for those who want to create an online store, but do not know where to start. "

Tip #13. Think carefully about the title

The title is the door that leads to your post. And you have literally a second for the reader to open it by clicking the coveted “more” and read the entire text in its entirety. You have 125 characters for this - the heading should fit into this amount.

Headline

Life Hack 1: Start the headline with the word “Do you want to…?”, and then add the sharp pain of the client: “Do you want to speak English fluently?”.

Life hack 2: Arouse the user's curiosity with a negative headline, for example: "7 mistakes when starting to learn English."

Life hack 3: Include shocking statistics in your headline , eg “9 out of 10 teenagers do it!” (about skipping school and developing attention with the help of mental arithmetic in your center).

Tip #14. Avoid superlatives

Leave the words “beautiful”, “best”, “excellent” for fiction, and replace with descriptions of real functions.

Simple adjectives

Life hack 1: If you are selling a service, tell us what benefits await your customers, what they will get as a result, and where it can come in handy. If you sell goods, for example, equipment, indicate the value, additional features, purpose, how to use. All these qualities can be revealed in posts gradually, proving with examples how and what.

Life hack 2: Don't neglect exponential numbers. For example, it can be the number of products sold, the number of people who completed training, the results of customers. Let your readers see that you are talking about real things, backed up by statistics, and not about abstract assumptions.

As an advertisement

Tip #15. Give up formulaic phrases

No need to think that using "stormy ovations" and "life is in full swing" you will show your expertise and erudition. No one will read a text stubbed with stamps - this has long been outdated. Make the post live and as natural as possible, the way you would talk to your subscribers live.

Creative comparisons

Life hack 1: If the text seems to be dry and lacks emotions, explain some points using a simple example from your life, or transfer the situation with one subject to a similar one with another.

Life hack 2: You can create the right mood in the text and revive it with the help of direct speech and dialogues. Of course, you don’t need to shove a conversation “about nothing” into the post, put an excerpt from the dialogue in the publication, which will serve as a transition, proof, etc.

Tip #16. Check the text for repetitions

When the same word is thrown from sentence to sentence, this indicates either the spelling "tap blunder" or the author's meager vocabulary.

Replays

Life hack 1: You can check a future post for repetition using the Fresh Look tautology service. But naturally, it is not perfect and indicates only a part of the repetitions.

Life hack 2: Proofread the text several times and replace the repetitions with synonyms. You can quickly find the right one and not bother with the help of synonym dictionaries.

Tip #17. Place in the publication STA

Or a call to action. For example, go to the site, save, leave a request, call, etc. When a person understands what he needs to do to obtain a particular result, then it becomes easier for him to act. Because he doesn't think, he just does. In addition, such messages create the effect of urgency of action.

Call in text

Life hack 1: Remember, the easier the action, the higher the likelihood that he will perform it. Since no one wants to bother, read long requirements, and then also follow the path of action.

Life hack 2: Use the soft nature of the call, for example, try / try 7 days for free. This suggests that the user is not obliged to do anything, even if he performs an action, which means that it is easier for him to decide.

Tip #18. Learn to write storytelling

The main task of this approach is to make the interlocutor from the first seconds begin to participate / empathize in the situation of the protagonist, which finally leads to the necessary goal - selling, performing an action, etc.

Storytelling

Life Hack 1: The more details you use, the better (but don't overdo it). Not just gloves, but red velvet elbow-length gloves. I didn’t just walk, but I walked through a dense stream of people, periodically adjusting my bag on my shoulder. They are necessary for a person to model the whole situation thoroughly and plunge into it as deeply as possible.

Important. Do not have time to respond to direct and lose potential customers? This problem can be solved with the help of Boss. direct. The chatbot will automatically respond to customers and offer a suitable product or service. To do this, you need to set up a personal account and create answer options for a dialogue with the user. Click and test -> boss.direct

Life hack 2: You won't get far on facts or emotions alone. Therefore, use everything 50 to 50. Support each of your eloquent statements with an argument, and do not leave each argument said dry.

Tip #19. Check the text for errors

They repel the reader, even if the post is super interesting. It's simple: if you don't know how a word is spelled, replace it, or google the rule. If in doubt about the comma, rephrase the sentence.

Spell checker

Life hack 1: To check the text for errors, you can use the Text.ru service. But he does not always highlight everything and often considers mistakes that he simply does not know.

Life hack 2: If possible, give the text to the proofreader with notes. If you don’t have such a person in your state, then you can find him on the freelance exchange.

Tip #20. Don't overdo it with emoji

If you use emoticons, then know the measure in them. Yes, they can both add zest to the text and spoil it. A large number of emoji complicate the text for the reader's perception.

Lots of emoticons

Life hack 1: Use emoticons only where you need to clarify the emotion, where it is not obvious. For example, where you omit the end of the sentence, do not finish.

Life hack 2: Choose the emoji that matches the color of your account. For example, if one of your colors is blue, label your lists with only blue items. This will help the audience remember you better.

Important. Do not forget to shoot and upload stories, because with their help you will be able to increase coverage. To make your stories in the TOP, we recommend taking a course where you will learn how to shoot and edit original videos in a few minutes.
