  • Manage defaults as you go
  • Nuclear option: Reset all default apps

Editor’s note: These instructions were put together using a Pixel 4a with 5G running Android 13. It’s a great device to base any guide on, but some steps might differ depending on your device and software.

How to manage default apps

The process used to be much more complicated, but Google has turned managing default apps into an effortless task. It’s baked right into the settings. Go into your Settings app, select Apps, and then go into Default apps.

From there, you can pick your default browser, call redirecting, caller ID, digital assistant, home launcher, phone, and SMS default applications. You can also go into Opening links to edit individual apps on your phone.

Step-by-step instructions to manage default apps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
  2. Go into Apps.
  3. Select Default apps.
  4. Pick the apps you want for each option.

Manage defaults as you go

Important: This feature is no longer available since Android 12. If you have the newer OS version, you’ll have to resort to changing your default apps using the guide in the previous section. Those with Android 11 and prior versions can still use this method.

The Android operating system used a slick concept called “implicit intent.” Basically, if the user or an app calls for the device to do something like “take a picture,” the operating system will look for an app that can get the job done. If more than one option exists, and no default has been selected (or if a new possibility has been installed since the last time a default was set), then Android will ask the user which app they prefer to use. This makes the process of setting default apps easy and intuitive.

Next time you open any link or action, and Android gives you options for which app to use, select your preferred default app. You can choose Just once or Always. Select Always if you want to make that app the default one. The operating will remember your preference from then on.

The only issue with doing this is that sometimes people accidentally set a default app they didn’t intend to. You can follow the steps in the previous section to change your preference. Once you get to the Default apps section, go into Opening links. Find the app you want to change your preferences for and go into it. You’ll get all the options you need there.

Step-by-step instructions to manage defaults as you go:

  1. Open a link to a website or action you want to set a default app for. I’m using BestBuy as an example.
  2. Android will ask you which app you want to use.
  3. You can pick to use this app Just Once or Always.
  4. Pick Always to set it as the preferred method.

Nuclear option: Reset all default apps

If you can’t figure out which app default is giving you fits and the option to choose a new default isn’t appearing no matter what you do, there’s still hope!

However, remember that going through with this procedure will also enable all disabled apps, reset any app notification options, and remove any background data restrictions or permission restrictions placed on specific apps. You won’t lose any data, but if you play around with your apps’ settings a lot, you might have to do a fair amount of reconfiguring to get things back to how you like them.

If you’re ready for an app settings reset, go into your Settings app. Select Apps & notifications, and tap on See all apps. Hit the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner. Tap on Reset app preferences. Confirm by tapping on Reset apps.

Step-by-step instructions to reset default apps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
  2. Go into Apps.
  3. Tap on the See all apps option.
  4. Hit the three-dot menu button.
  5. Tap on Reset app preferences.
  6. Confirm by selecting Reset apps.

FAQs

Android used to ask which app you wanted to use whenever you tapped on a link, and there was no obvious app to use. The feature was called implicit intent, and it was discontinued with the launch of Android 12. Only people using Android 11 and prior have access to it.

Most apps you can set as default apps are organized by category. You can choose your browser, call redirecting, caller ID, digital assistant, launcher, phone, and SMS apps. Additionally, you can opt to have links open with specific apps. For example, you can open Best Buy links with the Best Buy app, instead of using the browser.

Yes. Simply follow the instructions to change Default apps using the Settings and customize as you wish.

This depends on your phone, but usually, Google phones use Google’s own apps whenever possible. Similarly, Samsung may set its apps as default ones.

Change the default application

Music, photos, videos, links, text files… Files of any type can be opened with one of several applications.

When trying to open a file, the device gives us a choice - with which application we prefer to open such a file. So that in the future the selection window does not pop up all the time, and also to save the time it takes to open the file, you can press Use as default - this is where the problems begin!

Changing the default application

We often regret that we chose the wrong application by pressing Set as default - perhaps something distracted us at that moment, or at that time this application seemed to be the best option offered . Don't worry, by choosing an app to open a certain type of file, you're not signing a lifetime contract. You can change your choice at any time, and this article will show you how.

The first way to replace the default application is to change the settings of the application itself. You need to perform the following actions:

  • In the settings menu, open the section Applications
  • Select the application that you want to prevent automatic launch to open files
  • Scroll through the list of available options until you find the one you need
  • Now press Delete default settings

From now on, every time you try to open a file of a certain type previously associated with a specific application, the smartphone will prompt you to select the application manually (at least until until you set another default application).

Just a few taps in the settings menu - and the application will no longer open by default

Reset all applications to default

To clear the list of all applications that are launched by default when you try to open a file of a certain type, you will again have to access the applications menu in the settings:

  • Open the menu item Applications
Just one touch in the settings menu allows you to reset preferences for all your applications!

By resetting the preferences for all applications, you will return to the original state not only applications for opening files, but also all other options previously set (off timer, notification settings, background data transfer, and so on).

Manage default applications

Some devices have a special section where you can take a look at all the default applications for a specific purpose at a glance. On Huawei P9, for example, this section is located at Settings->Apps->Default . In this section, you can change the default settings by selecting an alternative for the default application.

If your phone does not have this feature, you can still conveniently manage default applications thanks to the utility Clear Defaults . A broom icon will appear next to each application, clicking on it will reset the default applications.

Now that you've got rid of the default applications, you can replace them with others, or simply select the Only once option for more variety. I will share with you one trick: to speed up the process of opening a file without choosing a default application, instead of using the option Only once , double click on the icon of the application itself.

What is the default application you use to open the files you receive on Whatsapp? I use Chrome for links, Gmail for email, and the system apps for photos and videos. What are you using?

Surely you have been repeatedly sent different links to Aliexpress or just to some online stores. Very often, when you click on such links, a regular tab in the browser opens, instead of transferring you to the corresponding application with a convenient interface. If it is inconvenient to use the mobile version of the site, then you have to manually search for the desired page in the application, which can be quite critical in the conditions of limited time.

Sometimes links are so shortened that it is not even clear what service they are intended for.

But the good thing is that Android allows you to customize even such things. Moreover, you can choose which specific links will transfer you to the appropriate program. We figure out how to open links immediately in the desired application bypassing the browser.

Disable the built-in browser Telegram

The built-in browser almost always does not allow you to follow the link to the application.

Many instant messengers or social media applications have built-in browsers. By default, links that come to you in such places open in them. To go, for example, to Google Chrome, you need a couple of extra clicks. In most cases, it is the built-in browsers that prevent links from opening the corresponding applications. Fortunately, this option can be easily disabled.

On the example of Telegram, this can be done as follows:

Using a standard browser is often more convenient than the one built into the application.

  • Open Telegram application .
  • Click on the three horizontal bars in the upper left corner.
  • Go to settings.
  • Select the Chat Settings section.
  • Scroll to the very bottom and turn off the "Built-in Browser" switch.

How to open a link in the application

Just turn on the switch and it will work.

But disabling the built-in browser is not always enough. Very often, smartphone manufacturers in their shells by default disable the ability to open links in applications . To fix this, you need to give the programs the appropriate permissions. For example Xiaomi , Redmi or Poco smartphones, you can do this in two ways:

  • Open the settings.
  • In the search bar at the very top of the screen, enter "Access to all files".
  • Go to the suggested menu.
  • Find the required application in the list and open its settings.
  • Scroll down and select "Open by Default".
  • Activate the "Open supported links" switch.
  • If there are no links in the "Links that will open in this application" block, click the "Add link" button.
  • Check the boxes for all links that should open in the selected application and click the “Add” button.

Now you can try to follow the desired link to check the performance of the settings. The second way is almost the same, except for the path to the settings with the activation of these links:
