How to be cool in instagram
How to be cool on Instagram and Snapchat, according to teens

Sure, you might think your Instagram of your smashed avocado toast and soy latte is totally hip. But in the world of teens, you're basically a massive loser. Sorry.

Being cool is an art form and few of us know how to truly master it. But teens today seem to inherently know what is and isn't cool, especially when it comes to posting on Instagram and Snapchat. Teens abide by some pretty strict rules when it comes to social media, lest they be deemed uncool, or -- heaven forfend -- a loser.
Here's the definitive rulebook on how to be cool, according to teenagers. Prepare yourself for some extreme blushing because, yes, you've definitely done all these things.
Literally never Instagram your Snapchat filters
Ellen McArthur, 19, from Devon, UK, says a "really loserish" thing to do is Instagramming photos with a Snapchat filter. "ESPECIALLY when you try and hide the flower crown filter at the top. WE CAN STILL TELL THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU NATURALLY LOOK LIKE," says McArthur.
OMG please, never sing
According to New York-based Joey Ann, 19, this rule -- which applies to Instagram and Snapchat Stories -- is "the most important." And, if you deign to break it, you "probably have no friends." Ouch.
"If someone has a super, super long story of them just singing in their car and being obnoxiously loud wherever they go I'll probably never look at their story or Snaps again," says Joey Ann. "They will get made fun of trust me."
"People only use hashtags ironically now."
Check your Instagram ratio
Simran R., from Mumbai, India, says your ratio of following to followers on Instagram is a key factor. "Never have more following than followers," says 16-year-old Simran. "Your ratio should be 2:1 at worst. If you have 1,000 followers, you cannot follow more than 500 people."
Don't just lie in bed with a Snapchat filter
Lily Hamblin, 19 from New Hampshire, U. S., says people who post things they are doing like "hiking and "travelling" are cool.
But, the "people who post videos of them laying in bed with the puppy dog filter" are absolutely not cool. "That is so annoying and I think weird," says Hamblin.
Only use hashtags ironically
"Don't say throwback Thursday," says Dylan Smith, 16, from Maryland, U.S.. "People only use hashtags ironically now."
Exercise restraint on your night out
This particular Snapchat habit seems to be particularly egregious in the eyes of teens. Rachel Luo, 18, from Texas, U.S., takes exception to people who post a ton of Snap Stories from the same concert. "There's only so many you can post before people get annoyed. (It's like five)," says Luo. "A bunch of people I know will edit their stories as the day goes on so there's not too many snaps."
Duration of individual Snaps is also crucial. Anything beyond 50 seconds is "beyond annoying," says Dylan Smith.
Space out your selfies
Ellen McArthur says having a page that's "literally only selfies basically shows that you have no friends. " Joey Ann agrees, adding that posting a selfie everyday on Instagram "gets old really quick."
"People should space out their pics with events and cool things they like besides their face, show us who they are in their own way. Whether it be fashion, food, cars, etc," says Joey Ann.

Ask yourself: Is this 'Insta-worthy'?
Stephen Hladik, 19, from New Jersey, says that on Instagram there's more pressure to post stuff that's interesting. "There's lots people of asking friends 'is this Insta worthy?' and endless retaking of photos until the best one is found," says Hladik.
Keep your mom out of it
Connie Hunter, 16, from Sussex, UK, says you should only post photos of your mom "if it's her birthday or if she dies." Brutal.
Strictly no double-posting
Never, ever post multiple photos to Instagram in one day, says Hayley Smith, 19. "Definitely do not post two Instagrams a day or even two days in a row unless you're doing something cool," says Hayley.
Keep emoji to a minimum
Rachel Luo says that some teens live by the "no more than 3 emoji rule." And, while we're at it, she says using loads of hashtags is "just tacky."
Don't send your Snapchat Story to people
Never, ever send your Snapchat Story to an individual person. Chances are they'll view your Story at some point, so why bother doubling up?
"If you send me a picture on Snapchat and you post it on your story it makes me feel really stupid because I thought that person was only talking to me," says Joey Ann.
Don't just post food pics
You might think that your #foodstagram is worthy of the 'gram. But, teens really couldn't care less. "Don't always post food pics; if we wanted to look at food we'd follow a food page," says Simran R. Connie Hunter abides by a strictly "no food photos" Instagram rule.

Think about the quality
"You would never post a picture on Instagram that was not good quality, or had bad lighting," says 18-year-old Maria del Pilar Ferreira Loray, from Manchester, UK.
Don't send Snaps of your abs
Teens have absolutely no time for photos of abs.
"Snapchat has a lot of thirsty guys that send you random pics of their abs," says Joey Ann. "#1 it's annoying #2 it gets old REAALLY fast #3 usually they end up blocked."
Be nice
Lily Hamblin says anything "mean or targeted at someone in a negative way" is absolutely not cool. "People who Snap embarrassing things of other people or use Snapchat or Instagram as a platform for their own personal drama with someone is usually viewed as annoying and immature," adds Hamblin. Though you might not have realised it, what you post on Instagram and Snapchat has a bearing on your coolness (so say teenagers, at least). That said, rules were made to be broken. You do you and you'll be just fine.

15 Cool Instagram Tips & Tricks To Really Up Your Game
Instagram is where all the cool kids hang out to show pictures of their breakfast and cute dogs. Here are some Instagram tips to turn you into an expert.
Instagram is rapidly becoming one of the most popular social networks on the Internet. In the past, when it came to showing off your photos, Flickr was the go-to platform. But now with the inglorious downfall of Yahoo, Instagram has stepped in to fill a very big void. So Instagram tips are something most people are interested in these days, and we always try to satisfy reader demand.
I personally run two Instagram accounts of my own, and I am about to run a professional one for a client. So over the past couple of years, I have come across some interesting tips and tricks you should bear in mind. I have never posted a video to Instagram, so I am not an expert there. But photos? Read on Jimmy Olsen!
15 Instagram Tips For The Obsessive Shutterbug
I am still a learner when it comes to Instagram, so I am not doing ALL of these things right now. But I am gradually working my way down the list.
Make An Effort With The Bio & Page
Your Instagram page is naturally what visitors will see and so you should make an effort with it. Try to have a half-decent photo of yourself as the avatar. The irony always kills me that some people’s photo avatars are simply awful on a photography social network.
The bio is the one and only way you can add a clickable link to make sure to link to your website or other important sites. Remember as well that if you want to be found, the bio page has to be SEO-optimized. So think about how people will find you when choosing a username and what name will appear on the bio. That’s why I added “author” to the end of my username.
Consider changing the font on your Instagram bio to something more unusual (mobile only). To do the same on the desktop, you can use Font Space.
Find Your FriendsA social network isn’t very sociable if you don’t have your friends there. So make sure you are following people you know.
In the settings, you can link to your Facebook account, as well as your email contacts and phone contacts. Instagram will then run everyone through their system and tell you who has an Instagram account.
It will also constantly monitor your Facebook account and contacts and tell you when somebody has opened a new Instagram account.
Quality Over Quantity
The general consensus is that the ideal posting frequency is once or twice a day. Any more than that, you will overwhelm everyone’s feeds.
But you should also focus on quality over quantity. Make sure the images are the best you can make them. Don’t just post any old crap for the sake of posting. Make each image memorable. Don’t take pictures of your breakfast. Try to take something that not many other people are doing.
Post Images In Various Designs & FormatsFor a long time, Instagram only allowed you to post images in the shape of a square. For those who took photos in widescreen, having to resize everything as a square was like setting fire to a Bible in front of a priest. So when Instagram finally announced they were supporting other sizes, everyone breathed a sigh of relief and put their crucifixes back in their pocket.
You can also make image carousels where you can swipe between photos. This is good if you have a group of photos taken at an event and you want to keep them all together. The smartphone app, Layout (iOS / Android) lets you take multiple images and combine them into one image.
Tag Relevant PeopleSimilar to Facebook, you can also tag images with Instagram usernames. So in this instance, I tagged this picture of my friend with her Instagram username. This helps increase her visibility if anybody is looking for her on Instagram. Or if she wants to see what pictures are floating around out there of her.
On the last screen, you will see the option to tag a user before you post an image.
Just tap the option, tap on the image and begin typing their username. They will then get a notification that they have been tagged.
Like Other People’s ImagesThe really wise hands on Instagram follow the 80/20 rule. Give 80% of the time and take something with the other 20%. In other words, don’t think about what you can get out of Instagram most of the time. Instead, focus on giving quality images and entertaining people. What you can personally get from the platform should be secondary and a bonus.
So like other people’s images and add thoughtful non-spammy comments. Start a conversation.
Filters Are Not As Popular As They Used To BeWhen Instagram started, everybody was putting all their images through the filters. They thought it made the pictures look very artistic. But in fact, most of them looked fake and eventually very tacky.
You won’t need to use filters if you take a picture, right? I personally detest them. Post the picture as it was taken. It will look more genuine that way.
Be Selective With The HashtagsHashtag selection on all social networks has become a bit of an art form. But Instagram is where it matters the most. Make a mess of it, and your images will never be seen. Do a really good job, and potentially the rewards are huge. Hashtags are basically descriptive keywords that can be clicked on to see all posts on that same subject.
Conventional wisdom says to keep the number of hashtags to no more than 7 or 8. Any more than that will begin to look like you are hashtag spamming. So choose 7 or 8 highly targeted hashtags only. Nobody will arrest you if you choose 9 or 10, but you get my point about not overdoing it.
There’s no harm in choosing one or two broader hashtags but try not to do it too much. I am extremely guilty of this, and I am trying to change that bad habit. For example, my dog has an Instagram account (what can I say? He’s a real diva). In the hashtags, I tend to use the hashtags #dog and #dogs. But with tens of millions of images flooding those hashtags, how likely do you think it is that mine will be seen?
If on the other hand, I chose #maltese (his breed), #smalldogs, #cutedogs, and so on, then that narrows it down a bit and increases the chance of my visibility. When choosing hashtags, look to see how many images that hashtag has. If it is in the millions, then try to avoid it. Instead, try to focus on niche tags with only a few thousand images.
On a Smartphone? Get a Hashtag KeyboardContinuously typing out hashtags can be really tedious and tiring, especially when on a smartphone. So make your life easier and get a hashtag keyboard.
The one I am using at the moment is Hashtag Key (iOS only). You type the hashtags once, and then the app saves them for you into custom categories. The next time you need to use them, just tap on each saved hashtag, and they will be auto-filled into Instagram for you.
A lot of people I know use TagsDock (iOS & Android), but I found it too limiting.
On the desktop (if you are using a social media scheduling tool such as Buffer), there is an amazing hashtag generation tool called Display Purposes. Add a subject, and it throws up lots of hashtags for you.
Display Purposes can sometimes give you some really silly, irrelevant hashtags, so check them closely before posting.
Switch To An Instagram Business Account For Better FeaturesEven if you are not using an Instagram account for business, you should still switch to a business account. Simply because a) it’s free, so why not? b) you can access analytics and stats, and c) you can connect your Instagram account to your Facebook business page. Finally, if you don’t like the business functions, you can easily switch back to a personal account in seconds.
To switch to a business account, go into your settings and choose the “switch to business account” option. You can now connect to your Facebook business page in the settings, cross-post images between the two platforms, add an address and phone number, and more.
To access the analytics, click the hamburger menu in the top-right corner of the screen and choose “Insights.”
It seems my dog is popular in Cambodia. Who knew?
Embed Instagram Posts On Another WebsiteIf you have a great image on Instagram or have found a great one from someone else’s feed, you can embed it on another website, such as your blog. For all those Cambodians to come and visit.
On the web version of Instagram, click the three horizontal dots on the image. When the menu comes up, choose “Embed.” Then copy and paste the code Instagram gives you.
Tag Images With Your LocationI have wrestled with this one for a while as I am a bit of a privacy advocate. But I have been persuaded by certain factors that you should tag your photos with the location where it was taken.
- Studies have shown that images with location tags get 79% more engagement.
- Images with location tags will show up in searches for that location.
- Images with location tags are more likely to be selected for Instagram’s front page.
- You are not revealing your address or anything. If you tag your photo “London,” you are not exactly leading people to your front door, are you?
To location tag, your image, go to the last screen before posting. Instagram will read the photo’s metadata and pull the location information for you. Tap on what you want the tag to say. Or search for another location tag if the ones being offered are not suitable.
Make An Effort With Your Image CaptionsI don’t understand why people don’t make more of an effort with their profile avatar, but I also don’t understand the lack of effort with picture captions.
The phrase “a picture paints a thousand words” is very true. But as a writer, I can also tell you the power of a good caption. A good caption can make people laugh and bring extra attention to your image. But you have to make the effort to get it right. Otherwise, why bother?
Insert Line Breaks In Your CaptionsAfter writing the caption, you should enter a line break to separate the two before you add the hashtags. Otherwise, everything looks crushed. But there is no obvious way to hit the return key on your smartphone keyboard. Or is there?
To get the return key on the screen, switch to the number keyboard, and you will see the return key in the bottom corner. Tap that, and you will see the line break appear. Now tap back to the letters keyboard and begin your hashtags.
Manage Multiple Accounts – Without Logging OutSince I have three accounts, logging out of one to get into another would get tiresome very quickly. Thankfully Instagram makes it easy to jump between accounts.
In the settings, scroll right down to the very bottom. There you will see the option “Add Account.”
Log into the new account. On the profile page, you will now see a drop-down menu at the top of the page.
Choose the account you want to go into, and you will automatically be jumped over. No extra sign-in is required.

1. Change your profile photo to a personal one
A profile photo is the first thing your subscribers see, and only then they scroll through publications, look at history. Faceless accounts do not generate income, as real live photos are valued. Remember that people follow a person as a brand, and finally becoming a brand, you can make good money on the Internet.
2. Monitor your content
Before you monetize your page, think about what makes you different from others. Your videos and photos should be unique, useful and interesting, then people will be happy to visit your page, leave comments, likes, subscribe. Don't get hung up on common, unpopular topics like travel, food blogging, beauty and sports, Mom.
It's better to write about what your soul lies in, then you can quickly make your Instagram page popular. Then you will not need to read something new every day, as the content will come from the heart. And most importantly, you will soon begin to receive a good income on Instagram.
Remember that the optimal message size is up to 2000 characters, try to remove negative notes in the text, make more lively appeals to readers. Be sure to joke, as humor brings subscribers and the author together. In the near future, it will be possible to run group chats in Facebook Messenger between applications with further integration with Instagram, which will make it easier to communicate with followers.
3. Find out who your followers are
When you choose a topic for your blog, you can learn about your followers. To become popular on Instagram in 1 day, do not be too lazy to look through the profiles of your like-minded people, find out their point of view, what they live and are fond of. This will allow you to choose the direction of work, create a plan with different topics of posts that will surely interest people. The main thing is not to be scattered on a wide mass of people, take possession of the souls of a devoted and small audience, and the rest must catch up.
4. Fill out your profile
The information in your profile header will help your page visitors to understand whether you need to follow you or it's time to leave your account. In fact, this is your business card, another, but the most important selling post that will allow you to become a popular blogger on Instagram. Use the keys, break the hat into semantic blocks, add casual emoticons. Be sure to post a working link to your website or other social network account there.
5. Plan your content
Planning is the best way to effectively manage your social networks. This will help the content plan that popular pages on Instagram develop a month in advance. Follow the work of other bloggers, catch the latest trends, as any information pipeline can be easily adapted to the idea of your account. Just prepare stories and posts in advance so that you always have something interesting at hand.
6. Actively promote page
You can make your Instagram account popular faster when you connect a target. There are main promotion options - this is Ads Manager, which provides for linking accounts in FB and Insta. You don’t have to invest a lot for this, you can separately pay for advertising space with popular bloggers and influencers. This all sounds good, but it will be impossible to calculate the profit from this advertising campaign.
You can also work with other users - like them, write messages, comments, mark their accounts in personal posts, expecting that they will also follow your example. Do not forget about mass following, giveaways, activity chats, contests.
7. Switch the page to a business account
Switching to a business account will let everyone know that your profile has a specific purpose. For such accounts, it will be easier to collect statistics, analyze data, and understand what followers need. The transition to a new status will help you quickly become famous on Instagram, make connections with brands and other bloggers. You can switch to business mode if you have a FB page.
8. Share personal
Storytelling is considered a good opportunity to tell subscribers about yourself, your life, explain that the author is the same person as they are. These can be ordinary stories about how you spent the summer, a working day, a day off, stupid stories that you won’t tell your children about, etc. The purpose of such stories is to resonate with readers, give them more information about you, encourage them to leave a comment with a like and ideally subscribe to your updates.
9. Decorate your ribbon
Like an apartment, your ribbon should be attractive. This is the main rule of a successful Instagram profile. Photos should be beautiful, of high quality, sustained in one topic. And this means that the pictures should look good with each other. Some bloggers choose a highlight for their feed - a certain color for publication, composition, tools for decorating pictures. If you hit a dead end, then install photo editors or use the built-in filters from Instagram.
10. Post regularly
This is another rule for successful blogging. Your videos, photos and texts should appear every day, otherwise people will get bored and go looking for a more prolific author. Studies have shown that an increase in publications increases the involvement of the target audience, so go for it. Most importantly, set yourself realistic plans that you can fulfill.
Conclusion
Our 10 Essential Rules for Increasing Your Instagram Profile will help you get your first million followers on the social network. Remember that the main secret of the page's success will be your sincerity, unlikeness from other bloggers, individuality - all this will open the door to success for you.
Instagram provides everyone with equal opportunities to become popular, to reveal their potential, to tell other people about themselves. You just have to create something worthwhile, and all this within your phone. Put in more effort, you will succeed.
