How to access instagram analytics on desktop

Instagram Insights on Desktop (a New, Easy and Powerful Tool)

Alexandra | Sep 14, 2020

Want to check Instagram insights on Desktop?

I’m going to show you the Instagram Insights that are inside Preview App:

Preview has become my Instagram control center.

You can see your:

  • Instagram analytics growth for the week and months (you literally see your percentage growth so you know how it compares to last week and last month. I love seeing “green” because it shows me that I’m on the right track and it motivates me to keep posting)
  • Hashtags Analytics (great to see the hashtags that are helping you drive traffic to your account)
  • Hashtag Groups Analytics (if you want to test your hashtags and see which hashtag group is helping you grow your account the most)
  • Your Top Posts (one of my favorite features – you can rank your posts and see your most liked, most commented on, the ones with the most impressions, reach or saved. Why care about this? So that you can create more posts like your Top Posts. Your Top Posts are the posts people love to see from you. They are growing your account and driving traffic to your page.)
  • Your best times to post and interact with your followers.

And more.

You can see the posts that built the most momentum for your account (you literally see your waves of growth) and you can click on them!

All the graphs, the posts, the analytics are interactive.

You literally post on Instagram and then you see in real time the numbers change.

My new routine is like this:

  • Post
  • Check insights on desktop
  • Learn from the insights
  • Create new posts based on what I’ve learned
  • Keep growing

There are 3 more things I’ve been enjoying about checking my insights in this app:

  1. I don’t have to log into Instagram and be bombarded with other people’s content first thing in the morning (I post at the end of the day, so I like to check my analytics the next morning). I’m at peace on my big screen, away from social media distractions.
  2. I can see a clear overview of the overall state of my account, in one glance, and
  3. I can refine my strategy and create new posts while I’m checking my analytics (I’ll show you below).

And yes, you can also check your insights in Preview App, on your phone, if you’re on the go.

Ok, enough talking.

Here is how to view Instagram insights on Desktop:

1. Open Preview App on your computer

Click here to open Preview Desktop.

Or type https://preview.app in your search bar.

2. Click on the Instagram Insights button

Once you’re inside Preview, you will see your Preview feed. You can plan your future posts here.

We’re here for the analytics.

So click on the Instagram Insights button on the left:

3. Instagram Insights summary

Welcome to Preview’s Instagram Insights.

What you see straight away is what I call your “Weekly Wrap” – it’s a summary of your analytics:

At a glance, you can see how your account is going.

You can see:

  • A summary of your insights (impressions, reach, new followers, profile views, website clicks, etc…)
  • Your posts’ analytics (photos, videos, carousels)
  • Your latest posts (click on one to reveal more analytics quickly)
  • Your best times to post and to interact with your followers
  • Top Hashtags
  • Top Hashtag Groups
  • Your Growth Graph

One of my favorite features is the Growth Graph.

Tip #1. Create your own graph.
Choose what insight you want to see. We all have different goals when we post. Some insights might be more important for your account. Click on any insights at the bottom of the graph to make a line appear or disappear on the graph.

Tip #2. Click on any Growth Spike to see what you posted that day.

4. Instagram Insights

Click on “Insights” to see the growth of each type of Instagram Insight.

Let’s say you want more people to click on the link in your bio. Then check the “Website Clicks” graph.

Or if you want to get more followers, check the “New Followers” graph.

Tip #1. With your mouse, hover over a blue bar to see your analytics that day.

Tip #2. Click on a blue bar to see what you posted. You can also see your growth compared to the last 7 days and 28 days.

Tip #3. Did you post something on your feed in the last 24 hours? Check how much “Impressions” that post actually contributed to your overall growth. Click on the last blue bar of the “Impression” graph.

Tip #4. Drag the graph to the left to see your analytics during the last few months. Can you see a Growth Spike somewhere? Click on it to see what posts generated your growth.

5. See your Top Posts

Click on the “Posts” to see your Top Posts:

This is one of the features I used the most because you can see your Top Performing Content.

People can engage with your posts in different ways: they can just see it (reach), check out more of your posts after seeing one of your posts (impressions), like, comment or save your post.

Sometimes you can get a post with a lot of reach, but not a lot of comments.
Or a post with a lot of saves, but not a lot of likes.

There’s no “bad posts”. Just different posts for different purposes.

Strategy tip: What kind of content do you want to post more of?

  • Content with a lot of reach to grow your community?
  • Content with a lot of comments to actively engage with your community?
  • Content with a lot of saves to deliver more value for your community?

Choose an insight that matters to your brand and your goals.

See which posts have the highest:

  • Likes
  • Comments
  • Engagement
  • Impressions
  • Reach
  • Saves
  • Video views (if you post videos)

Action: Create new posts like your Top Posts to keep growing your account and reach more people.

You can take it a step further.

Tip #1. Filter your posts.
Want to see your Top Carousel Posts only? Select only “Carousel” on the right:

Tip #2. Open the post on Instagram.
Do you want to see what you wrote in your caption? Or want to read the comments? Click on the Instagram logo to open the post on Instagram.

Tip #3. Repost your top performing content.
This is a strategy tip. Let’s say you want to boost your Reach on your account again, but you’re not sure what to post. Good news: You already have Top Posts. Repost one of your Top Posts under “Reach” (a few months after you’ve posted it for example). This will help you build momentum on your account again. To repost, click on the “Repost” button.

The post will appear in your Preview Feed. You can change the caption, hashtags and schedule the post.

Tip #4. Copy the hashtags of your Top Posts.
This is another strategy tip. Hashtags are the way people can find your content. Your Top Posts performed well and was seen by a lot of people. You can copy some hashtags and paste them in the caption for your new posts.

6. Insights about your Followers

Click on “Audience” to see insights about your followers.

We will create a separate blog post about how to use your audience insights to refine your Instagram strategy. For now, let’s just quickly look at what you can see.

You can see where your followers are from.

You can check the top countries and cities. And if you want to see more, click on “See More“.

You can also check the proportion of your followers who are men or women.

If you only want to see the demographics for men, you can hide the women part by clicking on the “M” or “F”.

You can also see how old they are:

And the overall percentage breakdown of men versus women followers on your account:

7. Instagram hashtags analytics

Click on “Hashtags” to see your hashtags analytics.

You can rank your hashtags:

  • “Count” = your most used hashtags
  • “Likes” = hashtags that get you the most likes
  • “Comments” = hashtags that get you the most comments
  • “Engagement” = hashtags that get you the most engagement

8. Hashtags groups analytics

Click on “Hashtag Groups” to see your hashtag groups analytics.

Do you use the same group of hashtags on your posts?

You can save them as “hashtag groups” in Preview. Then post as usual on Instagram. Preview will automatically start testing your hashtag groups.

You can see here which ones are performing the best for you:

9. Best Times

The last Instagram insights on Desktop I want to show you are the “Best Times” analytics.

Click on “Best Times” to see:

  • Your Best Time and Day to post
  • Your Best Time and Day to interact with people (when they engaged with your posts the most)
  • “Combined”: A heat map of Day and Time

Tip: Click on any graph to see what you posted on that day and time to generate so much hype.

Your turn to check Instagram insights on Desktop!

That’s it!

Now it’s your turn.

Click here to see your insights.

You can see your basic analytics for free.

Get the Pro or Premium membership to unlock all your insights.

When you get the membership you will also unlock the Instagram Toolkit and get other Instagram tools like:

  • Presets
  • Instagram Hashtags Generator (researched and handpicked Instagram hashtags for different communities and posts)

Can I view Instagram Insights from a desktop? Sotrender Resources

scroll down

Yes, and no. 😉

As you most probably know, you have access to your Instagram Insights only from your mobile app, and once you switch your profile to a Business Profile.

However, there is now a way to see your Instagram data from a desktop device – via Facebook’s Creator Studio. Alternatively, there are also external tools that can aggregate and present your Instagram data.

Instagram Insights – what are they?

Instagram Insights, if you’re not familiar with this term, are basically data and metrics informing about how your Instagram profile is performing.

As we can read on the official Instagram website:

You can use Instagram insights to learn more about overall trends across your followers and your content’s performance with your audience. (…) Insights are free and available only for business or creator accounts. You can view insights from your profile in the Instagram App.

As you can see, accessing Instagram Insights is possible only from the mobile app.

However, there are now ways to see all those data from a desktop device. Even though actually, you’ll no longer be accessing Instagram Insights, you’ll be able to see the exact same data (or in some cases even some more data).

How to access Instagram Insights from a desktop device

In order to have the possibility to see data about your Instagram performance from a desktop device, you first need to connect your Instagram Business Profile (or Creator Profile) to a Facebook Page.

Once you do this, just go to the Creator Studio, choose Instagram at the top of the page and then Insights tab from the menu on the left.

If you’re wondering what Creator Studio is, it’s a native platform within Facebook, from which you can publish content, manage it and analyze its performance.

How to access Instagram Insights from a desktop

You’ll see all the same data that you see on the mobile app. The only difference is that the data will be presented in a slightly different view. You can also select a time period for which you want to see your insights, e.g. this month, last 28 days, lat 7 days etc.

Here’s an example:

Instagram data presented in the Creator Studio

Even though the desktop version may make it easier and more convenient to view and analyze your data, for many marketers and professionals, it’s still not a perfect way of understanding their performance.

The latest Meta product, called Business Suite, also makes it possible to analyze your Instagram data from a desktop device. However, it’s not available yet to all Facebook users, so you have to wait for your turn. Another drawback is that, as it’s a new platform, it may contain some bugs and not all the features may be already accessible.

Analyzing Instagram data on a desktop in a more convenient way

We totally understand if you prefer to analyze your Instagram metrics on a desktop rather than on a limited mobile screen. It’s completely understandable also if you feel that what Instagram Insights has to offer is not enough for you.

Apart from using Creator Studio, you can also take advantage of external social media analytical apps that are available on the market. One of them, which you may or may not have heard of, is Sotrender.

Sotrender helps to analyze Instagram performance in a longer time period, understand audience interests and behaviors better, but also generate comprehensive reports.

Analyzing Instagram insights on a desktop in Sotrender

Another key difference, and advantage of using Sotrender, is that within one tool you get both insights about your organic, and paid, performance, meaning also about your ads. In Instagram Insights on your mobile device, you will see some metrics about your ads performance, however, they are mixed with organic results. You’ll definitely lack some crucial information about your ads specifically.

Analyzing paid Instagram Insights in Sotrender

In Sotrender you will see plenty of ads-related metrics like reach, impressions, CPM, CPC, audience share, sentiment, and many more.

Sotrender offers a 14-day free trial so you can easily test it anytime to see if it fits your needs and offers the data that you are actually looking for.

Instagram Insights, Facebook platforms, or an external app?

There is no good answer whether you should use free Instagram Insights on your mobile device, Creator Studio on your desktop or an external app. Using all of these platforms will provide you with a lot of valuable metrics. However one should be aware of some limitations that these platforms have. It’s your decision which one you’d go for. 🙂

Usually, once becoming more professional, the need of having more in-depth data is also increasing. It’s natural to start with Instagram Insights – and for a beginner that would be a lot of information to process already! However, as time passes by, we’re pretty sure that your needs will evolve, and eventually, you will go for some paid solutions. 🙂

How to create an Instagram creator account

What is an Instagram creator account?

When Instagram appeared, all users had the same personal accounts. As the platform has evolved, Instagram has made it possible to select business profiles to open up greater access to tools such as stats, a profile action button, and improved direct messaging features.

Big brands and influencers needed more information about their audience. As a result, Instagram introduced a creator account, we will call it the “author account”.

This account type is currently only limited to profiles with more than 10,000 followers that are also connected to a Facebook business page.

How to switch to a creator account on Instagram

Switching from a personal account or business profile to a creator account is easy. To convert, open your Instagram profile and click the three-line button in the top right corner.

Then tap the Settings icon at the bottom of the screen.

In the "Settings" menu, select "Account", and then click on "Switch to Author Account".

The installation process will take you through several screens to confirm the features of your author account, select a category, and enable/disable contact options.

Once completed, your author account is ready!

You will immediately see the statistics and new features of direct messages. In addition, there will be no negative impact on the algorithm or reach when switching to an author profile. Now let's look at four significant differences that distinguish an Instagram creator account from a business account.

#1: Instagram Creator Accounts Provide More Detailed Follower Growth Stats

Advanced stats are a reason to consider switching to a Creator account. If you have detailed information about the growth and decline of audience attention, you will understand what factors affect the change in the audience. Now the owners of business profiles see only an increase / decrease in the audience week after week. The author's account monitors the slightest fluctuations every day.

If your author account experienced a significant spike or loss of followers, you can determine which days it happened and link the fluctuations in interest to the posts and content you posted during that time.

If you select a day in the Growth chart and click View Posts (above the chart), you'll see all the stories and posts shared that day.

This information will help you determine what content and how it affects followers. Apart from this new dataset, there is no difference in Instagram statistics for creator accounts.

No. 2. Filtering of incoming messages has been added to the author profile

Business profiles have one Inbox folder and a Requests tab for messages potentially related to spam. There are two additional folders in Creator's Direct called "Main" and "Public".

The purpose of adding new tabs is clear: if a blogger receives a huge number of incoming messages, he, of course, wants to segment them. So an important message will not be lost in the incoming stream. In the "Basic" tab, you can leave the most important, and move the rest of the messages to the "General" folder. And new messages will still be in "Requests for Correspondence".

For example, messages from your friends, family members, brand partners, and colleagues may be prioritized over messages from followers you don't know personally or who are contacting for the first time. When you first switch to an author account, all of your existing posts remain in the Basic folder.

Also, if you go to the General tab, you will notice that notifications for this tab are disabled, regardless of whether notifications for direct messages are enabled. You can easily enable these notifications by going to your inbox settings.

When accessing existing messages, you can easily move individual messages between the tabs of your inbox - from "Main" to "General" and vice versa.

However, if you have a lot of messages, it will take some time to move them between tabs. It might be easier to leave the posts as they are on the Main tab and sort out the new content later on in the appropriate tabs.

Similarly, when you receive a request message and resolve it, you have a choice of which tab to move it to.

No. 3. Instagram author profiles can display category and contact information.

In the author's profile, new categories are available for you to choose from.

Most of these categories are more in line with the activities of people who actively develop a personal brand. Choose the category that suits you to show your audience what you're doing.

In addition to the new category options, author accounts can have contact information enabled or disabled.

Business profiles automatically show email and contact information, but contributor accounts can disable this feature. If you don't want to receive unwanted emails or cold calls from various companies or individuals, disabling these contact details can be helpful. Choose whether you want to be contacted quickly or if it bothers you.

The disadvantage of creator accounts is that you don't have the ability to enable additional action buttons such as "Book now", "Reserve" and other options available for business profiles. If users regularly use these action buttons for your brand, you may want to reconsider switching to a creator account.

No. 4. Instagram creator accounts have desktop access to analytics with Creator Studio

Creators get free access to Instagram Creator Studio.

The service can be activated from the desktop using the link

This is the same Instagram account statistics, but you can view it from a computer on Facebook.

The information is no different than what you see in the Statistics app, but it gives you access to everything on your desktop without requiring a third party tool.

Read Help

When you open Creator Studio on your desktop, you can connect your Facebook profile, related Facebook pages, and your Instagram account. When you sign in, Creator Studio uses the Facebook page by default, but you can click the Instagram icon at the top of the page to connect to your Instagram profile.

By connecting to your Instagram profile, you will see all the information about your posts. You can sort information by all content types or by specific content types: videos, photos, carousels, stories, and IGTV.

In the Content Library, you can view basic information about your individual posts, including likes and comments, and the posting date. If you go to the Stories tab, you will see the reach data of each of them on Instagram.

You can also rely on the Content Library to sort content by date range, or use the search navigation bar to find specific content related to any keyword or phrase.

The "Statistics" tab in the left sidebar menu contains two subpages - "Activity" and "Audience". The Activity tab displays all of your website visits, reactions to your CTAs and profile visits, and your profile's reach over the past week. As with Instagram app analytics, all of this data is only available for the last 7 days.

The Audience Insights tab provides the same data that you would see in your views in the Instagram app. In addition, it provides information about the demographics and age characteristics of your audience, as well as when they are most active on the platform.

#5. Creator Instagram accounts can create shopping posts with partner brands

One of the biggest incentives for brands and influencers to switch to a creator account is the ability to create shopping posts with brands they love.

Creators can tag the products of the brands they partner with by creating posts where their followers can immediately buy the product. This feature is currently available to a small select group of influential bloggers. As the program expands, more authors are expected to have access to this feature. This will benefit both creators and brands to increase sales.

Conclusion

In addition to a few mostly new features for contributor accounts, there are also some drawbacks to be aware of.

Author accounts do not have an API connection for third party tools. The Instagram API only supports business profiles for third-party tools. This means that any planning tools, analytical tools, or other applications still require a business profile connection. If you switch to an author account, you will lose this ability and will no longer be able to rely on scheduling tools and automatic publishing or the content authoring panel to publish content from your desktop.

You will have to post all your posts from the Instagram app itself and publish them immediately. Even if Instagram opens the API for creator accounts, additional services will still need to recode their applications to accept and process these additional account formats. There is no guarantee that all tools will include Instagram creator accounts in their support.

Also be aware that Creator Studio does not post to Instagram. Creator Studio is a nice feature for accessing Instagram stats from the desktop. But it still doesn't support posting content to Instagram. By losing the functionality of the dashboard management tool, you won't be able to post to Instagram from your desktop.

Should I switch to an author account?

To be honest, an author account is probably not that valuable to most influencers and brands at the moment. Some will see value in the added stats capabilities. And while those looking to upgrade to a Creator account don't rely on scheduling tools or third-party apps, they'll see the benefits of this new account option. However, most companies will not see enough value in the author format to try out the new kind of account.

In addition, author accounts will likely only remain available to those who have crossed the threshold of 10,000 subscribers or more. Instagram designed this profile format for influencers and is unlikely to open up this option to smaller accounts.

How to give access to a Facebook business page

To give access, open your business page on Facebook and select "Settings" - "Roles on the page" in the menu on the left. Enter the Facebook username you want to grant access to, or the email address they used when registering on Facebook. Specify the access level and click Add.

To determine your level of access, look at what rights each person has, including what options they give you to work on Instagram. For example, if the SMM-schik will fully maintain the page and launch the target, the rights of the Editor will suit him. If only to collect and process statistics - Analyst's rights.

Access to the business page will be opened as soon as the user accepts your invitation on their Facebook page. You can change access rights at any time.

If the SMM manager will run targeted ads on Facebook and Instagram, you need to grant separate access to the advertising account. First, add him as a friend on Facebook. Next, go to Ads Manager and in the menu on the left, click on the gear "Settings" - "Add people". In the window that opens, start typing the name of the SMM manager on Facebook. Next, select the level of access to the advertising account:

How to give access to your Instagram account

This is not always safe and is fraught with a shadowban or even the loss of an account. In addition, you may need to edit the text in a published post or process messages in Direct. Therefore, it so happened that the issuance of access to the SMM-schik is carried out, most often, by transferring the login and password from the account, and after changing the specialist, the password is usually updated. Despite the ease of issuing such access, it is rather insecure.

Therefore, in order not to give out the login and password from the Instagram account, Facebook created special tools: Creator Studio and Business Suite. With their help, an SMM-box, for example, with Editor access, will be able to post publications in the feed and IGTV, reply to comments and delete them, reply to messages in Direct, view statistics. Through the Business Suite, the SMM manager will still be able to run advertisements. Unfortunately, Instagram stories from Creator Studio and Business Suite cannot be created yet.

To grant access to Creator Studio and/or Business Suite to an SMM manager:

Make sure that the Instagram account is linked to the Facebook business page.

Perform all the above settings on the Facebook business page to give the right level of access to work with the Instagram account. Including giving separate access to Ads Manager if the SMM manager will be engaged in targeted advertising.

Log in to Creator Studio and link your Instagram account. This is necessary so that when you enter Creator Studio, the SMM manager will immediately display the desired Instagram account.

Open Business Suite and verify your Instagram account: enter your username and password.

You only need to log in to your account once. If the SMM manager has changed, all he needs to do is assign the correct role on the Facebook business page. It is important to note that when transferring access to Instagram in this way, the SMM manager will automatically receive the rights to manage a business page on Facebook (depending on the access level that you have given him).

How to give access to the community on VKontakte

To give access to the community on VKontakte, first ask the SMM to subscribe to it. Next, go to the community and select "Management" - "Participants" in the menu. Find the right person in the list of community members and click "Set as leader". Select the required authorization level. If the SMM manager will also run targeted ads, check the box next to "Allow to post advertising posts on behalf of the community."

If you plan to monitor and analyze the work of the target, we recommend giving the SMM manager a separate access to your VKontakte advertising account.

If you just give him Advertiser rights (Editor or Administrator), he will be able to run ads, but only through his account. That is, statistics on the advertising campaign will not be available to you if the SMM manager does not provide you with access.

Therefore, it is better to provide access to your advertising account on Vkontakte, from where he can conduct the entire advertising campaign. To do this, in the settings of your advertising account, enter the URL of the SMM account page or the email address to which its page is registered. Click Add User. His page will appear below. Opposite it, click "Set Rights" and select the type: Administrator or Observer.

Administrator – can create and manage advertising campaigns. Observer - only analyze campaign statistics. If you want the SMM manager to keep track of the campaign budget, check the box next to "Show the campaign budget to the user".

At any time, you can demote or change the level of access to both the community and the advertising account. To demote a user or change the level of authority, go to the community and select "Management" - "Members" - "Leaders" in the menu on the left. And opposite the right person, click "Degraded" to remove all rights. Click on "Edit" to change the user's permission level in the community.

To demote a user in the advertising account, go to it and opposite the person, click "Set up rights" - "Remove rights".

How to give access to a YouTube channel

You can only add other users as managers and administrators with a brand account. If you have a personal account, you need to link it to your brand account. This can only be done by the account owner following the instructions.

If you're not sure if you're connected to a Brand Account, you can check it by logging into your YouTube account and clicking the icon in the top right corner, then selecting "Settings". If you have Channel Admins - Add or Remove Channel Admins, then you already have a brand channel set up.

After verifying/linking your brand's YouTube account, click on "Add or remove channel administrators". You will be transferred to your Google account settings, where you need to select "Access settings".

In the pop-up window, click the icon in the upper right corner to add new users. Next, enter the SMM email address (gmail.com only) and select access rights.

The invited user will receive an email in which they must accept your invitation in order to gain access rights.

How to give access to your LiveDune personal account

Statistics is also an important part of privacy, so in LiveDune you can also grant access to an SMM manager without giving him the login and password from your personal account. The function is available on Business and Agency tariffs.

In order to issue rights, click on the gear icon and open the "Employees" section. Click add employee, fill in the name and email of the SMM manager and position. Also, you can grant rights only to certain categories of accounts on the Dashboard, with which the SMM box will work.

In addition to access to the statistics of selected accounts, every Monday SMM will receive a weekly report by e-mail on the category to which he has access. Additionally, the SMM manager will be able to use Autoposting and work with comments in all social networks.

Only important news in the monthly newsletter
