How Can Facebook Help My Business?

We’ll try to keep it short — Facebook is the gateway to getting your products in front of billions of shoppers. We’ve been partnering with Facebook for years to give you access to some of the best social selling tools available for your online store. Here are a few ways Facebook can grow your business:

  • Facebook Shop
  • Instagram Shop
  • Facebook Product Catalog (a fancy file that’s filled with important product details like pictures, prices, and titles, to easily create product ads)
  • Facebook Pixel (retarget customers with ads, measure conversions, and setup dynamic ads)
  • And Facebook Messenger

And with these social media integrations, Facebook holds the key to the future of social selling. While several of these tools require an e-commerce integration, users can use Facebook Messenger and Facebook Pay to receive money on Facebook. You’ll find out what this means for your business and why you need a Facebook Shop.

Is a Facebook Business Page Free?

Your standard Facebook Business page is free to create and use. However, if you want to use the e-commerce capabilities, such as a Facebook Shop. You’ll need to connect a product catalog to your account and this generally requires a fee.

If you decide to run marketing campaigns, such as boosted posts or sponsored posts — you’ll want to allot for a marketing budget. But to simply start promoting your business on Facebook with a business page, it’s completely free! And why we recommend it as a great place to start for beginners. Unless you have a Facebook Shop with payment, there are not many ways to receive payments on your business page. This is why we recommend setting up an Ecwid E-commerce store and getting access to over 60 payment gateways.

The one circumstance you can use Facebook Pay as a business is within Facebook Marketplace. Currently, Ecwid is building out capabilities to give merchants access to marketing their products via Marketplace, check back for more!

Other than that, as a personal business (per Facebook) you are prohibited from using Facebook Pay to receive payments. But if you’re still wondering, “how to receive payment on a Facebook business page?” And not quite ready for a website, non-Facebook services like PayPal or Venmo are a good place to start.

  • Purchase games and in-app purchases
  • Contribute donations to a charity or personal fundraiser
  • Buy and sell items on Marketplace and in groups.

The main way users can receive money on Facebook Pay is in conjunction with the Facebook Messenger app. You should check availability in your country as the feature is being rolled outed to a select set of countries and apps.

Once both users initiate a conversation, a “$” icon will appear, allowing you to send money. You can start using Facebook Pay on Facebook or Messenger with just a few taps.

Simplifying Payments with Facebook Pay

Meta

By Deborah Liu, VP, Marketplace & Commerce

Today we’re introducing Facebook Pay, which will provide people with a convenient, secure and consistent payment experience across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

People already use payments across our apps to shop, donate to causes and send money to each other. Facebook Pay will make these transactions easier while continuing to ensure your payment information is secure and protected.

With Facebook Pay you can:

  • Add your preferred payment method once then use Facebook Pay where available to make payments and purchases on our apps, instead of having to re-enter your payment information each time
  • Set up Facebook Pay app-by-app, or choose to set it up for use across apps (where available) — that means we won’t automatically set up Facebook Pay across the apps you are active on, unless you choose to do so
  • View payment history, manage payment methods and update your settings in one place
  • Get real-time customer support via live chat in the US (and in more places around the world in the future)
  • Clearly understand which payment services are part of Facebook

Facebook Pay will begin rolling out on Facebook and Messenger this week in the US for fundraisers, in-game purchases, event tickets, person-to-person payments on Messenger and purchases from select Pages and businesses on Facebook Marketplace. And over time, we plan to bring Facebook Pay to more people and places, including for use across Instagram and WhatsApp.

How It Works

You can start using Facebook Pay on Facebook or Messenger with just a few taps:

  1. Go to “Settings” > “Facebook Pay” on the Facebook app or website
  2. Add a payment method
  3. The next time you make a payment, use Facebook Pay

Once Facebook Pay is available on WhatsApp and Instagram, you’ll be able to set it up directly within each app.

Facebook Pay supports most major credit and debit cards as well as PayPal. Payments are processed in partnership with companies like PayPal, Stripe and others around the world. Facebook Pay is built on existing financial infrastructure and partnerships, and is separate from the Calibra wallet which will run on the Libra network. (Update on December 1, 2020 at 6:05AM PT: Calibra is now called Novi, and Libra is now called Diem.)

Security and Protection for Payments

Facebook has offered trusted payment experiences since 2007, and we’ve processed more than $2 billion in donations alone since we launched our first fundraising tools in 2015.

With Facebook Pay, we’re continuing to invest in security. We designed Facebook Pay to securely store and encrypt your card and bank account numbers, perform anti-fraud monitoring on our systems to detect unauthorized activity and provide notifications for account activity. You can also add a PIN or use your device biometrics, such as touch or face ID recognition, for an extra layer of security when sending money or making a payment. Facebook does not receive or store your device’s biometric information. Learn more about Facebook Pay privacy.

What’s Next

Facebook Pay is part of our ongoing work to make commerce more convenient, accessible and secure for people on our apps. And in doing so, we believe we can help businesses grow and empower people everywhere to buy and sell things online. We’ll continue to develop Facebook Pay and look for ways to make it even more valuable for people on our apps.

How does Facebook Pay work? [Nov 2022]

Meta recently released its own digital payment method called Facebook Pay. But how does Facebook Pay work? In this article, we'll walk you through everything you need to know to get started with Facebook Pay: Accessibility, how payments work, and most importantly, how to get paid on Facebook Pay.

What is Facebook Pay?

Facebook Pay is an electronic payment tool that allows you to make digital transactions on all Meta products: Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp. It can be used for peer-to-peer or business transactions.

Facebook Pay: A brief introduction

Following the success of digital payment methods, Facebook - now rebranded as Meta - launched Facebook Pay in 2019. In line with the rebranding, Facebook Pay is now also called Meta Pay.

Facebook Pay does not store money; he acts more like an intermediary. For this reason, users must connect a payment method such as a debit card, credit card, or PayPal to send and receive money.

What is Facebook Pay? Metadigital payment method

Although this feature is available in more than 100 countries, its scope and the Meta channels it supports differ from country to country. As a digital payment method, it has a number of benefits for businesses, which we will discuss next.

Why use Facebook Pay

Meta already has a huge user base across all of its platforms - with a total of 3.71 billion monthly active users worldwide, which means you'll open the door to more potential customers. And given the growing popularity of digital payments, Facebook Pay is an attractive option for tech-savvy customers.

Unlike other digital payment methods, Facebook Pay reduces the number of steps a customer needs to complete a purchase with any Meta product. Customers make purchases on Facebook or Instagram without being redirected to external sites.

They can also use saved credentials to speed up the checkout process. Convenient payment methods like this help businesses increase conversions and often make it easier to make impulse purchases.

Why install Facebook Pay

Is Facebook Pay secure? Meta uses anti-fraud technology to detect suspicious activity and will notify you of anything out of the ordinary. In addition, Meta encrypts information about payment cards and bank accounts and provides the ability to use a PIN code and biometric data to authorize payments.

Finally, this feature is free to set up and use for both businesses and consumers. However, you may incur fees from PayPal (if that's your linked payment method) and Meta Commerce Manager. We'll cover more details later in this article.

Despite all the benefits, companies should be aware that cross-border transactions are currently not supported. Also, some of the most important Facebook Payment apps are only available in a few countries. We will discuss this in the next section.

Where to use Facebook Pay

Facebook Pay works with all Meta messaging channels and social networks: Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

How Facebook works

In this section, we will tell you about all the many possibilities that Facebook Pay offers.

Facebook Payment: In-app Checkout on Facebook Shop and Instagram Shop

If you have a Facebook or Instagram store, customers can make in-app purchases using Facebook Payment. Please note that this is only available in the US. Of course, you will first need to create a Facebook or Instagram Shop on Meta Commerce Manager.

Use Facebook payment to checkout in Facebook and Instagram stores.

Be aware that Meta charges Commerce Manager users a commission for every sale they make to Facebook or Instagram Shops. Every sale over $8 is subject to a 5% commission. Sales under $8 are subject to a $0.40 fee.

Facebook Payment: Messenger Transactions

In the US and Thailand, Facebook Messenger users can easily transfer money to or request payments from their contacts. Sending or requesting money is similar to sharing images or videos and can be initiated in a conversation topic.

Although this feature was designed with peer-to-peer transactions in mind, it can also be used by businesses that do not make large daily purchases. On Facebook Messenger, the Facebook Pay limit on total transactions per month is $9,999. This includes sending and receiving money.

Example of a Facebook Pay Messenger transaction.

For example, this is a handy tool for hospitality businesses that require booking or prepayment deposits, as customers can transfer money after asking for availability. Businesses can also view the receipt in the conversation thread, creating a record for both parties.

Again, this is only possible if both the business and the customer live in the same country and have access to this feature in the Facebook Messenger app. Later in this article, we will show you step by step how to request payments from your customers via Facebook Messenger.

Facebook Payment: Donate to fundraisers

Meta provides Facebook and Instagram users with the tools to raise funds for non-profit organizations through Facebook Payment in supported countries.

On Facebook or Instagram apps, there are several ways to pay via Facebook to donate to Meta fundraisers: Facebook Pages with a Donate button, Facebook Live with a Donate button, Instagram Stories with a Donation sticker, Instagram Fundraiser in Reels, etc.

Meta does not charge any transaction fees, which means that organizations will receive the full amount that users have donated.

Facebook Payment: In-App Purchases

Facebook Payment is also a way to pay for various Facebook entertainment, including games, in-app purchases, and exclusive content on the Facebook Watch website. Depending on the user's location, the availability of entertainment options will vary.

Use Facebook Payment to buy Facebook entertainment

Following other successful direct mail platforms such as Twitch or Youtube, Facebook has also created a subscription and donation system through Facebook Payment to support content creators.

Facebook Payment: WhatsApp Pay transactions

In recent years, Meta has been testing WhatsApp Pay, an in-app payment system for WhatsApp users in Brazil and India. Due to the popularity of WhatsApp in these countries, Meta wants to give WhatsApp users the ability to send and receive money directly without leaving the app.

WhatsApp Pay is supported by Facebook Pay and is designed to work in conjunction with other WhatsApp ecommerce tools such as Business Directory, Catalogs and Shopping Cart.

Should you use Facebook Pay?

Currently, only businesses in the US have full access to what Facebook Pay has to offer. If your business is located there, you should give it a try as Facebook is hugely popular in that country.

Otherwise, you should probably wait until Meta implements in-app payment for Facebook and Instagram in your country, as this is the main attraction for businesses to use this feature.

Facebook Pay is also still in its infancy compared to more established and popular payment methods such as WeChat Pay in China and LINE Pay in Japan. Only time will tell if it becomes a widely popular digital payment method.
