Why you can trust Pocket-lint
(Pocket-lint) - Have you ever sent a WhatsApp message that you quickly regretted? Or maybe you second-guessed it later that day or the following week? Either way, same here. It's not a great feeling, and it really makes us wish the messaging service had some sort of undo button.
Well, did you know it does?
Starting in 2017, WhatsApp began allowing users to delete their sent messages with a feature called "Delete for everyone". There are a couple of caveats to how it works - like that you have to delete your sent message within a certain timeframe. Still, here's everything you need to know.
Update and open the latest version of the WhatsApp app on your phone and follow these steps:
Tip: Tapping Delete for Me instead of Delete for Everyone will only delete the message for you. Your recipient will still see it.
To successfully delete a message you sent to someone on WhatsApp, you must decide to do so within the first two days. You can't delete it after that, WhatsApp explained on Twitter. Originally, WhatsApp capped the ability to delete messages to 7 minutes after they were sent, and then it extended that to an hour. The ability to delete a message within two days first started in August 2022.
Yes. Your recipient will see a "This message was deleted" notice (which won't look suspicious or anything). Seriously, though, they can also accidentally read messages you've sent before you've had a chance to delete them.
The ability to delete messages you've sent on WhatsApp up to two days afterward is now rolling out to all WhatsApp users on Android and iPhone.

WhatsApp currently allows its users to delete messages from personal as well as group chats within about an hour.
The time limit to delete a message in future could be indefinite. This means that WhatsApp users in future will be able to delete ‘without considering when it has been sent’.
has recently submitted Android beta version 2.21.23.1. As per a report by WaBetaInfo- the online platform that tracks new and upcoming WhatsApp features, the update shows new changes that may be currently coming to the Delete for Everyone feature. So, what is going to change? Let’s find out
WhatsApp currently allows its users to delete messages from personal as well as group chats within about an hour - 1 hour, 8 minutes and 16 seconds to be precise. After the message is deleted, the app displays a notification that reads “This message was deleted.” Readers must note that the feature works only in case the recipient has not read the message before deletion.
The new development indicates that this time limit may be increased to undefined time in a future update.
What is the new undefined time limit?
WaBetaInfo, in its report, has shared a screenshot that allowed it to delete a message as old as three months. The time limit to delete a message in future could be indefinite. This means that WhatsApp users in future will be able to delete ‘without considering when it has been sent’.
“The new version of “delete message for everyone” allows deleting a message sent 3 months ago: this is because WhatsApp is planning to change the time limit in a future update”, the report says.
Is there any timeline for the new feature?
The report says this new version of delete messages for everyone is under development. As mentioned earlier, it is introduced with the new beta version 2.21.23.1 of Android.
WhatsApp’s ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature was first introduced in 2017. At the time of release, the time limit to delete a message was set to 7 minutes. The limit was increased to more than an hour months later.

In today's article you will find step-by-step instructions on how to delete your sent message on WhatsApp (whatsapp) for everyone - for both contacts and in the chat. The secret way to delete a message if the time limit has expired.
Such a thing as deleting sent messages is something akin to fantasy for any messenger user, because we all know that once a message has been sent, it is no longer possible to delete it.
This rule is unconditional for everyone except WhatsApp users. If you use this messenger to communicate with friends and colleagues, now you have the opportunity to delete messages sent by mistake. You just have to figure out how to delete your sent message in whatsapp (vatsap).
If the message is sent to the wrong number, it will not be possible to cancel the sending. But if the user has lost the desire to share the message with the interlocutor or simply needs to erase the history of correspondence in order to avoid leakage of important information, all participants can delete the sent WhatsApp message within 68 minutes. After this time, only the “Delete from me” function will remain available in the menu, that is, the messages will reach other participants and be saved in the chat history of the interlocutors.
The latest app updates allow you to delete messages sent to WhatsApp chat.
It doesn't matter if they were read or not. Once you've sent a message, you have exactly 68 minutes to delete it. When the timer expires, there is no going back.
Instead of a message in the chat, there will be a notification "This message has been deleted." The recipient will also see this inscription. Whether he read the deleted message or not does not matter. In group chats, deleting works the same way.
The "Delete for everyone" option works only during the first 7 minutes from the moment of sending. After that, the time limit will turn on and this item will disappear from the context menu!
If you previously deleted the message by clicking on "Delete from me" instead of "Delete from everyone", then nothing will come of it.
If you make a mistake, you lose control over the management of the correspondence of the other subscriber.
Even if you managed to delete the message in the first minutes after sending, this does not mean that the message has not yet been read. The text of the messages may appear on the lock screen of the recipient's phone.
The scheme for deleting SMS in Vatsap is the same for the sender on all devices:
After that, the interlocutor's chat will remain in the same form, and will be corrected on the sender's phone. You can delete any number of letters in this way and at any time.

Clearing a chat allows you to free up device memory, because it destroys all messages inside conversations, but at the same time it saves all conversations, contacts, group dialogs on the Chats tab.
This is convenient when you want to continue communication, but there is a need to clear not very important history in order to unload the messenger and increase the performance of the application.
Step-by-step instructions for using the "Clear Chat" function for a personal or group conversation individually:
If a bulk purge is to be done, a function that allows you to clear all chats at once, while maintaining their location on the page, will come in handy.
Action algorithm for clearing all chats:
If the sender decides to delete one or more messages in the conversation, he will be able to remove them from the phone only with the latest version of WhatsApp installed. The other participant must also have the app updated on their gadget, otherwise you will not be able to use the “Delete for everyone” function.
To update the app to the latest version, you need to sign in to your Play Market account on the Android platform or the App Store on iOS.
You can delete a message in your smartphone if you perform these manipulations in the phone settings:
Instead of a message in the chat, a notification about deleting the message will appear. The interlocutor will also see it.
On an iPhone, follow the procedure similar to that used on Android smartphones:
Delete on iPhone.
You can also delete unwanted messages from a PC.
To do this, you need:
Deleting a conversation completely is even easier. Here is what you need to do for this:
From now on, the dialogue with the other subscriber will be cleared of messages, however, he will remain in the chat list in the main messenger window.
If you want to delete not only the correspondence itself, but also the mention of it, follow these steps:
You can delete correspondence and other information in the WhatsApp application on your own only on your smartphone. Information that has already been delivered to the interlocutor will be stored on his mobile device.
Audio recordings are removed from the conversation history in the same way as text. After holding down the desired voice message, click "Delete". But audio messages in WhatsApp may not disappear forever, since they are stored not only in the chat, but also in the internal directory of the application (when this option is activated). In order to activate the function of saving files offline, it is not necessary to make attempts to restore deleted recordings. It is enough to select the backup function and virtual storage in the phone settings, where audio messages will be duplicated.
On the iPhone, you can also save voice recordings in the cloud and have access to them after deleting the application from the chat. All voice messages will remain in the iTunes service. The files will be available for listening outside the network.
Another way to save an audio file from "Whatsapp" in the device's memory before deleting it is to send an audio message to your own e-mail, indicating yourself as the addressee.
You cannot do this on your own. Requires admin-level access to the application with an encrypted login key.
Many people ask us: “if you delete WhatsApp, will the correspondence be saved?”. Yes, even if you uninstall the program, the dialogue history will not go anywhere. Moreover, all participants in the conversation will have copies of them.
All that subscribers have at their disposal is the deletion of whatsapp correspondence for those dialogues in which you yourself participated, sent or received SMS. The top two options we have considered partially solve this problem.
If these points do not suit you, go to the final one.
There is a professional way to delete correspondence without restoring or vice versa, the same method can return all deleted messages, both your own messages and someone else's phone number.
All of you are familiar with the term Whatsapp Printout, which allows you to copy the dialogues of any person and send the file to e-mail.
All manipulations are performed at the messenger server level, where you can purge whatsapp by phone number. The geographic location of the subscriber is absolutely irrelevant. The only negative is the service is paid.
To completely delete the WhatsApp correspondence, our specialists connect to the messenger servers, which store databases with messages for all phone numbers. All messages are usually encrypted, so the risk of our employee reading the chat is minimal.
You can erase all unnecessary dialogues, both from yourself and from strangers, even a year old. No stories - no compromising evidence. Chats will disappear forever and cannot be recovered.
Order
Whatsapp has a method to remove the time limit to delete unwanted messages. This tricky deletion method makes it possible to return to the past and clear the history of the dialogue.
After 68 minutes after sending, voice messages can be deleted from the chat if you follow this algorithm:
You can remove text, an obsolete link, or an image this way.
A sent message on an iPhone will disappear from the chat history forever if you do the following:
If the interlocutor performs such manipulations in a dialog or chat, the text, audio or video file delivered to the user will be deleted, and a corresponding notification will appear in its place.
We have already said about the need to install the latest version of the program for the option to work successfully. But there is one more condition: the message must be sent no later than 60 minutes ago. Is it possible to delete a message in Whatsapp until it has been read, but on the condition that more than an hour has passed? No, in this case, you can only erase the text on your own. The table shows the options for Android and iPhone:
| On Android | On iPhone |
Open a chat in WhatsApp → select message → “Trash” button → “Delete from me”. Or: Open a chat in WhatsApp → highlight a message → mark a few more with a short press → “Trash” button → “Delete from me”. | Open a chat in WhatsApp → select a message → the “Cart” button. Or: Open a chat in WhatsApp → highlight a message → select a few more with a short press → the “Basket” button. |
You also need to keep in mind that:
All the instructions / conditions in the article on how to delete messages from the recipient (recipients in this case) in WhatsApp are 100% applicable to group chats.

If you do not want to receive messages from a particular user, then you can delete unwanted contacts from Watsap.
Sometimes it takes a lot of time to find what you wrote in a general chat. In order not to engage in endless rewinding of the dialogue tape, find your messages with a search. For this:
The tape will automatically rewind and all matches will be highlighted. If you delete a message in Whatsapp in this way, will it be deleted from the interlocutor (s)? If less than a chat has passed, then yes.
In the event of a change of smartphone, you can easily copy all chats and messages to a new gadget.

To do this, install the messenger on the second device and log in (on both smartphones you need to log in to Whatsapp under the same cell numbers).
Then move the files from the Databases directory from the old gadget to the new one. Next, restore from an existing backup.
As a result, all your dialogs with other users will appear on the new gadget, the phone book, attachments and program settings data will be saved.

Whatsapp's standard backup contains only text content, that is, simple messages and chains of related letters indicating the author and date of sending.
Attachments of media files and office documents are not saved, and often because of them there is a need to return chats.
Follow instructions:
When deleting a letter with an attachment, the corresponding file is cleared from the directory. If you have deleted the chat, but have not yet closed the program, this file will still be in the Media folder - minimize the messenger and find a picture, video or office document through the PC;

WhatsApp provides two options "Delete Chat" and "Clear Chat". The user must distinguish between them. The first option allows you to erase all internal correspondence of the conversation, as well as remove it from the screen of available chats. If the user has not left the dialogue and information is sent there, the chat will return to the archive of correspondence again.
But a message that has been deleted cannot be recovered. The second one involves deleting text correspondence and files inside a public or private conversation. The chat remains in active correspondence.
Sent a message about WhatsApp to your colleague and now you want to know if there is a way to fix it? The last WhatsApp conversation you had with your most trusted friend is full of messages that aren't exactly helpful and you would like to know if there is a system in place to place orders and make only the most important ones visible. Well, you'll be pleased to know that you've come to the right place at the right time.
In fact, today in this tutorial, I will show you how to delete whatsapp message with simple procedures to follow. However, first of all, it is better to carefully read all the information that I will provide you in the following chapters, so that you are aware of the consequences depending on the operation that you will perform.
However, if you are still really interested in this matter and want to know how to delete messages sent or received on WhatsApp, I suggest that you do not waste any more precious time, get comfortable, take your mobile phone and start concentrating immediately. by reading this guide. You are ready? Yes? Great, then I just want to wish you a good read!
The other method, on the other hand, allows you to delete a sent message also on the recipient's device if they also have the latest version of the app installed and the sent message has not been sent for more than 1 hour (68 minutes and 16 seconds, to be more precise).
The first procedure can be applied indiscriminately to both sent and received messages. However, in this case, it should be noted that deleted messages are not actually removed from the conversation, but only from the chat screen.
This means that the messages will still be visible in the chat of the other user or other users you have been chatting with.
If you want to delete the message for the recipient as well, you must use the second method within the specified time frame.
There is also an exception: you can delete WhatsApp messages, effectively making them disappear from the conversation if the message appears next to a sent message. watch symbol (instead of the classic gray pincers mi blue ).
This character indicates that the message has not yet been delivered to the recipient due to technical issues: deleting the message in this state will no longer be delivered. However, this situation is, so to speak, a little "extreme", and this is not always the case.

If you intend to delete a received message from the chat screen without showing the other user the blue read confirmation marks, there are two ways you can proceed.
First, the easiest (but least functional) method is to delete the entire chat. Obviously, in this way you will delete not only the received message, but also the entire history of the conversation. In my guide to archiving WhatsApp chats, I also told you how to delete an entire conversation.
As far as a less practical method, but certainly more functional than the previous one, is the one that first requires deactivating read receipts and then deleting the message. You can't actually delete a WhatsApp message without opening it , so you'll have to proceed as I point out below.
First, you need to do deactivate the blue ticks , that is, read confirmations. In this case, you can refer to my guide dedicated to this topic. After that you can continue deleting messages : you can consult what I explained to you in the previous chapter in which I showed you how to proceed on Android, iPhone and PC.
