Hello again! It's me, Marika.

You can take the work out of hiring new people for your business by creating a job post on Facebook. You can review applications on the go from your phone and respond to any qualified people who will be an asset to your business. Plus, it's free. The only thing you have to do to use the jobs post function is to set up Messenger. If you haven't done that already, view the Facebook Blueprint content on messaging that will explain how to do it step by step.

Let me tell you one of my favourite success stories about a small business who used the jobs post feature. It's about a bakery, and now you know why it's one of my favourites. Del Sole Bakery is family-owned and served the Montreal, Canada, community for over 30 years. It has three locations. That means three different places to enjoy their delectable breads, cakes and pizza. Yum! Just before their third location opened, Del Sole spent USD 300 to put an ad for a bread packer in a local paper. A month passed and there were no candidates in sight. They decided to post the job on their Facebook Page, and within a week, Del Sole was able to pick from a pool of 57 candidates who had applied.

Now it's time for you to get started. Go to your Page. Choose Job post and fill in the details about the position. Add more info that applicants will want to know, such as the salary and whether the job is full- or part-time. Pro tip: Be really clear here. You want the job description to be well thought out, so make sure that you provide key details – such as job title and location – to help attract the right future employee. You can also ask questions to learn more about everyone who applies. Once you've filled in the description, publish it. Your post will show up in two places: on your business' Page and the Jobs Page section. It'll also show up in the News Feed, just like your other posts.

Now it's time to sit back, relax and watch the applications start rolling in. When they do, you can manage them on your phone and talk to your future employee on Messenger. Here's another pro tip from me to you: If you haven't found anyone and want to reach more candidates, you can pay to turn your post into a Facebook ad to promote the posting. If you have a position to fill and are looking to hire someone, fill in a job post now. I hope you find someone as great as my friend Beth to fill that position. Speaking of, I'm off to the bakery. Keep watching!

As a small-business owner, human resources tasks like reviewing job candidates and hiring may fall squarely on your shoulders. Facebook has recently made that process easier with the introduction of Facebook Jobs.

This new feature is similar to LinkedIn, in that it also allows businesses and organizations to post open positions and accept applications right on the platform — but Facebook lets businesses do this for free.

Making hiring more accessible

When Facebook added its job posting feature in 2017, the company said small businesses were the inspiration for the new addition:

“40% of U.S. small businesses report that filling jobs was more difficult than they expected, which is surprising when you consider that these small businesses also employ nearly half of the country’s workforce,” Facebook wrote on its business blog.

With the “Jobs” feature, Facebook took a step to make hiring easier for that 40% of small-business owners who reportedly find hiring to be a bigger challenge than they originally expected.

Before the Jobs feature was even added to Facebook more than 1 billion users were looking at Facebook’s “Pages” on the platform. Facebook said that users and business owners alike were using the platform to find and to fill jobs anyway, so the new addition was just an added tool to make that even easier.

By making it official, Facebook gave administrators of Pages the power and tools to post job openings and Facebook users the means to apply to those jobs directly on Facebook.

How it works

Want to get in on the potentially game-changing way to recruit top talent for your business? It’s easy to do so.

Through the Jobs feature, businesses can post job listings with title, role description, “part-time” vs. “full time,” and so on to their official page just as easily as they would post a normal update. That job listing will go live on both the business’s official page and in the “Jobs” section on Facebook. That section is specifically for people looking for jobs and businesses looking to hire.

Users looking for a job can find the latest listings a number of ways on the platform. People with Facebook profiles can scroll through that Jobs bookmark and see jobs listed on a specific business’s page, or they could come across the job posting on their feed. They can also filter their search based on location and filter by industry. Once they’ve stumbled across your job posting, all they have to do is click “Apply Now.”

Users who click apply will see a pre-populated page appear that pulls information directly from their profile. Information like their name, education history, current city and employment history will all be made available. Essentially anything relevant that the user has made public on their Facebook profile will populate in the application form.

Instead of a traditional resume or cover letter, users can send your business a letter-style note of about 250 characters through Facebook Messenger. This is Facebook Jobs’ pseudo-cover letter — and the candidate’s chance to convince you, the business owner, that they’re the best person for the job.

Once you’ve posted your job listing on Facebook and have received some of these submissions, you can track these applications all in one place.

You’ll be able to review your job applications and respond to candidates over Messenger and boost your job listing to other audiences on Facebook if you’re not getting the visibility you’re looking for.

All in, it’s an intuitive and simple way to approach hiring for your small business.

Step 1: Navigate to your business page on Facebook

First, you should log in as the administrator of your business’s Facebook page. Remember, this is different from a user profile on the site and only users with a profile and permission can manage or edit pages.

Step 2: Click “job” above the spot to write a new posting

Once you’ve navigated to your business page you should select the “Job” option listed above “Write a post.”

Step 3: Enter job details

Next, you should be able to start inputting details and information about the job. When it comes to job listings, generally the rule is the more details the better.

Job searchers probably want to know as much as possible about the open position, so information beyond the general job description, like salary, location and company culture, can help make the listing more appealing.

You can change details about the job listing on your end as well, like how you receive the applications. The default setting sends the applications straight to Facebook’s Messenger inbox for the Page where the job is posted. But posters can opt to have the applications sent to their email if that’s where they’d prefer to review them. To do this, scroll to the bottom of the page when you’re creating the job posting and add your email address under the prompt, “Receive applications by email.”

Step 4: Preview the job posting

You can see a preview of the job posting before it goes live online. To see a preview of the job post, look to the column on the right and then choose either “Desktop News Feed” or “Mobile News Feed.

Step 5: Publish the job posting

Once you’re happy with how it looks, photo, description and all, select, “Publish Job Post.” After the post goes online, job searchers can see it and begin applying.

Job posts on Facebook expire after 30 days. It might be helpful to set a reminder to renew the post after that time period is up if you still haven’t found a new employee to fill the job. The post can be renewed after the 30 days are up but after it’s expired and before it’s renewed, visitors to the business page won’t be able to see the job posting.

Edit, change or close a job posting

Job postings that already exist on a business page can be changed if necessary. If you decide you want to tweak the job description or want to change some of the specific details to try and appeal to more applicants you can do so with just a few clicks.

Page managers should navigate to the page and select “Jobs” and then select the “…” symbol in the upper right corner of the posting. From the list of options that appears, you should click “Edit job post” to do so. When the desired edits to the post have been made, the post can be updated by clicking “Edit job post,” again.

If you find your dream employee using Facebook Jobs and no longer need the job posting to be live on the business page you can close it. Closing it will make it no longer visible to job-searchers on the platform. Again, you can access and manage the job postings by looking at the left column on your business page and then select “Jobs.” On the job post that you want to close, click it and then scroll to the bottom of it and choose to close it.

“If you close a job post, Page visitors will no longer be able to see the job post on your Page, but Page admins, editors and jobs managers will still be able to see the job post and renew it,” according to Facebook.

What comes after the applications roll in?

With a job posting on Facebook hopefully comes lots of applications as well. You can manage those applications by navigating to your page and then selecting “Manage Jobs” at the top. From there you have a number of options for continuing the interview process with candidates.

Facebook made it possible for you to favorite candidates, reach out, schedule a time for interviews and filter applicants right in the jobs platform. While looking through the applications if there’s a candidate that catches your eye, you can either contact them by email, phone or right in Messenger.

After contacting the candidate you can then set a time for the interview right in the Jobs platform. On the platform, you can select “Schedule Interview” and then select a day and time before notifying the candidate. Either party can cancel the interview should something come up.

You can also filter the applicants based on where you are in the interview process with them. The platform allows you to “Set Status,” or change the applicant's status to contacted, interviewed and so on throughout the process.

For those listings that aren’t getting as many applicants as you had hoped, you can spend a little to get a boost. The “Boost Post” option appears at the bottom of the job listing and you can get a boost just by spending a little extra. Having a social media presence for your business, ideally on Facebook, can also help increase the number of applicants the post gets as well.

You can choose the people you want to target with the boost as well as your budget and duration of the desired boost on the job listing.

What this means for you

Introducing the jobs market was a huge deal for Facebook.

With more users engaging with higher intent on Facebook — and an added use of Facebook Messenger for businesses — Facebook certainly can benefit from the Jobs feature. Originally the jobs feature was only available in the United States and Canada but the feature was later expanded to be available in more than 40 countries.

Plus, Facebook was able to start earning additional revenue because some Page administrators are willing to pay to push job listings, just like they would a traditional Facebook ad.

But as a small-business owner, you don’t have to pay for a Facebook Jobs posting. This puts Facebook at a huge advantage, considering that other services like LinkedIn and SimplyHired do charge businesses for job postings.

And as a business owner, you might benefit in more ways than just finding your next “Employee of the Month” on Facebook. Businesses might roundup more followers to their Facebook pages by posting their job openings. You’ll get more eyes — and potential followers — on your page regardless of whether people apply to your job posts.

Plus, when it comes down to it, almost everyone has a Facebook account — but not everyone has a LinkedIn profile. TechCrunch notes that while 467 million people use LinkedIn, 1.79 billion people are on Facebook. And those 1.79 billion people are much more active users than those LinkedIn users are. On average, Facebook users spend about 40 minutes a day on the platform.

By posting your job listings on Facebook, you’ll get more traffic on your job openings — and certainly more bang for your buck if you don’t pay too much to push your listing.

What’s next

So far, Facebook’s new Jobs feature is catching on with local, family-owned small businesses.

Facebook highlighted three small businesses that all found multiple employees using the Jobs feature. All of the businesses received applicants and were able to fill their positions in just weeks.

How to post a job on Facebook Jobs

The Facebook Jobs service allows employers to post jobs directly on the social network, and job seekers to respond to them using profile data instead of a resume. This feature was first introduced in 2017 in limited access. In Russia, the site has been operating for more than a year, but so far it is not very popular among companies. But in vain.

Facebook Jobs has at least four advantages. First, posting a job here is absolutely free. Secondly, due to advertising, a post with an ad can be targeted to a specific target audience and receive relevant responses. Thirdly, vacancies from Facebook Jobs are included in the new search results in Google. Yes, yes, the one that was on the news last month. And finally, fourthly, it's just convenient. The candidate will be able to get to know your brand better without leaving the social network, and you can always contact the candidate you like through Messenger.

We suggest not to ignore all these possibilities. To make it easier for you to get started, we have prepared detailed instructions on how to post a vacancy on Facebook Jobs and what nuances you need to take into account.

How to create a job posting

You can add your job offer to the Facebook database in one of three ways: either on the main Facebook Jobs page, or through the administration panel of your business page - directly in the post or in the "Jobs" section in the side list.

In the window that opens, you can describe the vacancy in as much detail and as clearly as possible. We advise you to fill out the form in its entirety so that there is more trust in you, and fewer questions from applicants. Responses will be sent to the email address of company account administrators. Also, notifications from applicants can be viewed in the personal account of the business page.

Things to Consider When Posting a Job

You can complete the form with your questions. Facebook Jobs allows you to add an open question, a closed question, or a multiple choice survey to your ad. A more advanced questionnaire will help collect more information about candidates and find truly motivated and qualified specialists. But you should use this feature only if you are sure that you will receive a large flow of applications.

Write down the most accurate address of the potential place of work.

This is especially true for companies in large cities or with multiple offices. So the candidate will immediately understand whether it is convenient for him to get to work. In addition, accurate geolocation will help to reach more suitable job seekers when promoting a vacancy.

Specify at least an approximate fork of income.

Facebook Jobs will skip the announcement without specifying the salary, but we suggest adhering to the principle of salary transparency, as your Russian and foreign colleagues do. Please note that the amount of earnings can be specified not only per month, but also per hour, week or year.

Use live photos.

These can be snapshots of both the workflow and the future manager or the entire team. Posting a job directly on a social network implies closer contact with candidates, so images from photo stocks are completely inappropriate here. By the way, photos need the same size as for regular posts: 1,200 pixels wide and 630 pixels high.

Check how the ad looks in the mobile version of the app.

Sometimes illustrations for vacancies are not cropped as we would like, and the post looks unattractive. Do not forget that Internet users, and therefore potential job seekers, are increasingly moving to mobile.

How to find a job on Facebook?

Most likely, you already know that in addition to the traditional sites hh. ru and Superjob.ru, you can use social networks to search for a job. Facebook is especially popular. But not everyone knows how to use such a search tool effectively.

What is the reason why social media search is becoming more and more popular lately? Firstly, some of the vacancies may never reach specialized sites. There are good companies that rarely look for employees. They do not have a paid account on job aggregator sites. Therefore, it is easier and faster for them to advertise in groups. Although there are really not many such companies. Secondly, people still do not often use social networks to find a job, so the competition between candidates is reduced to almost zero. And if your resume on the same hh.ru is one of hundreds (at best), then, subject to a well-written post, you will become, if not the only one, then at least a candidate from the top three or five for the vacancy of interest. Thirdly, your post may catch the eye of someone who is just thinking about looking for an employee, or who is not looking at all yet, but will be interested in your achievements.

The main disadvantage of such a search is that it is not a marathon, but a sprint. Your post, at best, will attract attention for a week and a half. And then for this you need comments and likes. By the way, this is one of the reasons not to give a link to the resume on hh, but to offer to send a resume on request. They write comments to you with a request to send a resume - your post goes up. A little trick: unsubscribe right there under the post after sending, they say “sent (a)”.

On well-known sites, you can update your resume as much as you need, and there are more vacancies to choose from. Therefore, posting on social networks does not exclude traditional channels at all.

Where to start?

The first thing that comes to mind: you need to make a post on your page that you have entered the labor market. A mandatory first step, but it alone is not enough. Even if you have an audience of about 3-5 thousand, I would still recommend that you write to thematic groups. And even more so, you should not rely on your page if you have only a few hundred people as friends.

Facebook job search groups can be conditionally divided into several types:

1. Especially for HR managers where we discuss our internal professional issues. This is just an ideal option, since there is the maximum concentration of people we potentially need, who are invited for an interview. There is one problem with these groups: the most popular, as a rule, are closed, the pass is only for their own. What to do? Either try to seep through there, or ask recruiters you know to post your post and recommend you.

Most famous bands:

HR hub

HRDome (HR dawns)

True HR

2. Job search groups. As a rule, recruiters also subscribe to them. They post vacancies there and look at ads from job seekers. At the same time, look, maybe you will find an interesting offer for yourself.

Group examples (actually there are more):

True JOB

SELL YOUR HEAD

Got a job! Need work!

3. Highly specialized groups by area of activity. In such groups, vacancies can also be posted, but already targeted at a specific audience. Experienced recruiters keep track of who and what writes there if there is a request for a specific specialist.

Group examples:

Architects and designers

Programmers

Retail

Summary: we are sorting out the list of groups where we plan to post a job search post. The best option is to place an ad in all three types. If it was not possible to get into a professional public, we throw it into job search groups and groups that are close to our topic.

A large list of groups used by recruiters can be found here .

What to write?

Your ad should catchy from the first lines. Therefore, the first five lines should at least answer the question why it is worth continuing reading and, as a result, inviting you to work. Let's get straight to the point of "I'm looking for a job @position title". And then we write about how we can be useful to the employer. Pre-visit sites with vacancies, see what requirements apply to candidates for similar positions. Every time you apply for a job, you have arguments in your mind why you should be called, even if you don't really fit the description. So this is your chance to voice your thoughts and even dispel some fears.

“I've been doing “cold sales” for 5 years”, “a marketing department has been built from scratch”, “in six months we have organized 8 thematic exhibitions for our clients, numbering…”, and so on. We write why we are suitable for the position, what we are proud of, you can write about solving some difficult case (people love stories).

We drew attention to the post, then we need to tell you how to get a resume. You can simply write: “I will send my resume upon request” (you can immediately see where and how your post will work). You can, as I did, make a separate site with the ability to download a resume (In my case, only a few people guessed to follow the link and download a resume, the rest asked to send it. But it works for someone). You can simply attach a resume file to the post. What you should not do is post a link to a job search portal. First of all, there are a total of negative attitude towards such links in the HR environment, and this is immediately a small minus to your karma, and our goal is to collect pluses after all. Secondly, someone who is interested in a resume may not have paid access to the portal, which means that he will still have to write to you and ask for contacts. Our goal is to make a resume with contacts as accessible as possible, literally in one click.

As a result, we are writing a post, the purpose of which is to talk about our main advantages, to give an overview of the experience and work out possible objections. In the announcement - only the essence, lengthy introductions are unnecessary.

Posting in a social media group about looking for a job, it's like stepping into the spotlight. Firstly, many will immediately go to your page. Therefore, put it in order in advance. Ideal if you have posts and materials related to your activities. Remove all ambiguous content: reflections on politics, faith, possibly mate in the comments. All photos that feature alcohol abuse. Someone recommends that you also remove photos in swimsuits, here it’s up to you, a lot depends on the level of the position you are applying for. In this case, your page is actually part of the resume - it forms an image of you.

Be careful with comments on your post. Perhaps there will be individuals whose comments will not be pleasant, they can criticize salary expectations, the form of submission, and whatever. There will be a desire to fight back. Don't get into arguments. At most, you can answer the attacker, but not with the aim of convincing him, but only in order to explain your position to other readers (well, and raise the post, of course).
