WhatsApp allows users to send and receive GIFs, and the app has a library of stored GIFs. Senders are able to edit the image as they would a static picture, as well as add a caption.
Here's how to send GIFs on WhatsApp.
1. Open WhatsApp and navigate to "Chats." Click on an existing chat, or begin a new one.
- For iPhone users, tap the "+" icon to the left of the text box. Select "Photo and Video Library." All of the photos and videos stored on your iPhone camera will appear. Select "GIF" at the bottom left corner.
- On an Android, select the smiley face icon that's next to the message box. Tap GIF at the bottom of the screen.

Let's consider in order how to solve the problem voiced in the title of this material through the messenger clients operating in the Android, iOS and Windows environment.
Android
WhatsApp users for Android have access to the widest list of methods that can be used to show your interlocutor a picture that comes to life when you open it in a chat.
Option 1: Tenor library
One of the most significant innovations since the existence of the messenger from the point of view of many of its users has been the ability to select and send gifs from extensive web directories (in the case of the "green robot" - Tenor ) available directly in WhatsApp applications.

- Open WhatsApp on your Android device and go to the dialog or group chat where you want to send the animation.

The following method of transferring animated images from the device's memory via WhatsApp allows you not to open the messenger for sending on purpose, to transfer several files and not to a single recipient at the same time. In this case, it is enough to call the function integrated into Android "Share" , which is possible from almost any application that can somehow interact with the files of the type of application in question, for example, file managers and "viewers" of images. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the principle in question, we will use the "Explorer" Google Files .

- Open the file manager for Android and then go to the folder containing the GIF file sent via WhatsApp.
- Highlight the animated image you are sending by long-pressing on the name of its source file or preview. If you need to send several gifs at the same time, use short taps to check the thumbnails of all the animated pictures you plan to send.
- Click on the Share icon , which in the case of the application in question is located at the top right of the screen. Next, find the icon "WhatsApp" in the displayed menu "Send..." and click on it.
- In the messenger that starts automatically, specify the recipient of the animation by highlighting its name by short tapping on it. If there are multiple recipients of the GIF, mark them all in the same way. After selecting the desired contacts, click on the round button with an arrow pointing to the right located at the bottom of the screen.

Option 4: Create a GIF in WhatsApp
WhatsApp developers have implemented a rather interesting feature in its mobile clients that distinguishes this messenger from others. So, you have the opportunity to create a GIF from a short (up to 6 seconds) video recorded using the device’s camera, as well as get a GIF file by cutting and converting a fragment of the video in the Android device’s memory into the appropriate format.

- In a chat with the recipient of a GIF that has not yet been created, click on the Paperclip icon in the message input field, and then select Gallery in the message attachment type selection menu that opens.
- Find the video you want to convert to GIF, tap its preview.
- Next, trim the clip loaded into the messenger by shifting the boundaries of the panel displaying the video sequence until the duration counter below it shows 0:06 or less. Click "GIF" on the switch that appears below the video sequence as a result of trimming the recording.
- Optionally, edit the resulting animation using the tools offered in the upper right corner of the screen and add a caption to the generated multimedia message. When you have finished creating the gif, tap on the button with the paper airplane and it will immediately be transferred to the chat.
iOS
iPhone users and users of WhatsApp for iOS, as well as Android smartphone owners, can choose from several GIF sources and transfer methods to showcase the type of content in question to their contacts.
Option 1: GIPHY Library
In order to provide quick animation search and transfer via messenger, WhatsApp users for iOS are given access to a web directory of GIFs called GIPHY .
To implement the ability to send GIFs from the specified library, you need to proceed as follows.
- Open WhatsApp on iPhone, chat with the recipient of the animated image.

Option 4: Create a GIF in WhatsApp
As mentioned in the first part of this article, WhatsApp provides the means to create a GIF animation by the user himself. Without leaving the messenger on iPhone anywhere, you can literally “on the fly” generate and send an animated picture to your contact very quickly, using a short video recorded by the device’s camera or a ready-made video file from the iPhone storage as the basis for creating it.
Camera
- After chatting with the recipient of the "live" picture created as a result of the following steps in this instruction, open the iPhone camera by tapping its icon on the right next to the message text entry field.
- Press the circle in the middle of the lower part of the screen and, while holding it, record a short video - fixing the lens on the surrounding reality will stop when you stop pressing the specified button.
- After creating a video, "cut off" its "extra" fragments from the beginning and / or end, using the panel located at the top of the screen that opens, which demonstrates the video sequence. “Duration” of a GIF with the considered method of obtaining it is limited to 6 seconds, and the fact that this condition is met, according to the result of trimming, will be indicated by the switch “Video / GIF” displayed under the panel with the video sequence.
- Tap "GIF" on the radio button described above, apply effects to the animation if desired, and fill in the field "Add caption" .
- Upon completion of creating a "live" picture, click on the button initiating its sending in the lower right corner of the screen and then wait for the delivery of the multimedia message you created to the addressee.

- After opening the correspondence with the recipient of the GIF image, click on the button "+" , which is located next to the text message input field on the left.
In the menu that opens, select "Photo / Video" . - Find the video intended to be the basis for the GIF and tap on its preview.
- By dragging the borders of the panel showing the storyboard of the movie at the top of the screen, determine the beginning and end of the fragment to be converted to animation. From a computer, that is, through the WhatsApp application for Windows duplicating what is happening in the mobile versions of the messenger, it is possible to send animated pictures, but here it is stated that the number of available methods for performing the procedure is much smaller than in Android and iOS, and there are also certain restrictions.
Option 1: Library
As conceived by the creators of WhatsApp, the main method of demonstrating gifs to your interlocutors in the messenger is to select a send from those offered in the catalog service of this type of content, which is very easy to implement from a PC:
- Run WhatsApp on your computer, open a chat , where you plan to send the animation.
- Click on the smiley-faced button next to the test message area of the program window.

- Open WhatsApp for Windows and chat with the recipient of the GIF placed on your PC. Next, click on the button "Paperclip" , which is located to the right of the contact's name above the area with received and sent messages in the program window.
