How to remove and disable contact syncing in Telegram

If you've been using Telegram for a while now — like many of us at Android Central — you probably automatically synced your contacts when signing up for the app. True, syncing your phone's contacts makes life easier when it comes to getting in touch with friends and colleagues, but what if you're one of those people who never clears out their contacts list? The phone number for your old neighborhood's pizza place, that guy or girl you went on a date with once three years ago, your ex… the list goes on.

The last thing anybody wants is notifications when somebody they've forgotten about — or don't want to hear from — joins Telegram. Luckily, there's no need for syncing regret. You can quickly and easily disable contact syncing in Telegram and delete any contacts you've already synced with the app. We'll show you how.

Now Telegram won't sync any new contacts you add to your phone with the app. However, any contacts you've already synced will still appear in the app. Here's how to delete those.

  1. Open the Telegram app.
  2. Tap on the Settings menu in the top left corner of the screen (the three lines).

  2. When the pop-up appears, tap Delete to confirm.

All previously synced contacts are now deleted, so you'll find the Contacts section of the app empty.

By deleting previously synced contacts and disabling contact syncing in Telegram, you won't have to worry about notifications when people you don't want to hear from sign up to the service. You'll be protecting your privacy, too, by keeping your contacts on your phone rather than sharing them with any third parties.

On the messaging app Telegram, you can delete each contact individually or remove all of them at once. How to Delete Contacts in Telegram on a PC

When you first make your Telegram account, all the contacts on your phone are synced with your account. And since Telegram is a cloud-based app, all the contacts and messages are synced to your cloud storage. On the other hand, when you add a contact to your Telegram contact list, it will also be automatically downloaded to your phone’s contact list.

Since you can add as many Telegram contacts as you want, it can be easy for your contact list to accumulate the names of people you seldom talk to. Fortunately, deleting contacts on Telegram only requires a few steps. While it’s easier to delete your Telegram contacts on your mobile phone, it can also be done on the desktop app.

No matter which operating system you have on your PC or laptop, deleting contacts on the Telegram desktop app requires the same steps. You can choose to delete one contact, multiple contact, or all of your contacts at the same time.

Deleting a Single Contact on Telegram

To delete a single contact on Telegram on your PC, this is what you need to do:

  1. Launch the Telegram app on your desktop.
  2. Click on the Hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  3. Select Contacts on the left sidebar.
  4. Find the contact that you want to remove. When you click on their name, you’ll be taken to their contact details page.

    Note: If you’ve never spoken to that person before on the app, your chat will be empty.
  5. Go to the three dots in the upper-right corner and choose Delete Contact.
  6. Select Delete again to confirm.

That’s all there is to it. You can use both the desktop app and the web app to do this.

Keep in mind that once you delete a contact from the app, the contact’s phone number won’t be removed from your phone’s contacts list. All you need to do to remove a Telegram contact from your phone’s contact list is delete them just as you would with any other contact.

Even though you deleted the contact, the chat you have with that person will remain on your Telegram. If you want to delete the chat as well, you need to find the chat. Next, click on the three dots in the upper-right corner again, and select Delete Chat.

Deleting All Contacts on Telegram

You also have the option to delete all your Telegram contacts at once. Keep in mind that you can’t use the Telegram desktop app to delete multiple contacts. Instead, you need to use the web app. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Open the Telegram web app. You can use any web browser to do this.
  2. Sign into your Telegram account.
  3. Click on the three horizontal lines in the upper-left corner of your screen.
  4. Go to Contacts on the left sidebar.
  5. Choose Edit.
  6. Select all your contacts from your Telegram contact list.
  7. Click on the Delete button.
  8. Confirm that you want to delete all your contacts.

How to Delete Contacts in Telegram on an Android Device

Deleting all your contacts on the mobile app is much easier. Unlike the desktop app, the mobile app can be used to delete one contact at a time or to delete multiple contacts. When you delete a contact from your Telegram contact list, they won’t be notified that you deleted them.

Here’s how you would delete a single contact and all contacts on Telegram on your Android device:

If you want to delete one contact from the Telegram app on your Android, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open the Telegram app on your Android.
  2. Tap on the Hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  3. Select Contacts.
  4. Find the person you want to remove from the list of contacts and tap on their name.
  5. Tap on the three dots in the top-right corner.
  6. Select Delete contact from the drop-down menu.
  7. Confirm that you want to remove them.

Even though you’ve removed them from your Telegram contact list, their number will still be saved in your Android’s contact list. Therefore, you need to go to the contact list on your device and delete them there too.

Don’t forget to delete your chat history with that Telegram user as well if you have one.

  • You can do that by opening your chat, tapping on the three dots in the upper-right corner, and selecting Delete Chat.

To make sure your Telegram contacts aren’t synced to your phone’s contact list from this point on, this is what you need to do:

  1. Open Telegram and tap on the three horizontal lines.
  2. Navigate to Settings on the left sidebar.
  3. Continue to Privacy and Security.
  4. In the Contacts section, toggle the Sync Contacts switch.

Deleting All Telegram Contacts

While you can use the web app on your phone to delete all your Telegram contacts, there’s another way to do it. Follow the steps below to find out how it’s done:

  1. Open Telegram on your Android.
  2. Tap on the Hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner of the app.
  3. Go to the Settings tab on the left menu.
  4. Proceed to the Privacy and Security option.
  5. Navigate to the Contacts section.
  6. Disable the Delete Synced Contacts option.

Not only will this remove all your contacts from the Telegram app, but from your phone’s contact list as well.
