How to un delete messages on facebook

5 Ways to Recover Deleted Facebook Messages

  • You can recover deleted Facebook messages by downloading them or checking old email notifications.
  • You can also recover them by looking in the cache of the Messenger app, if you use Android.
  • You can also check your archived messages or ask the person you were messaging with for a copy.

It happens to everyone: You've scoured your message history, but the one message you're looking for just isn't there. For one reason or another, you deleted it. But now you want it back.

Once you delete a Facebook message, it's gone for good — at least, from a strict Facebook Messenger perspective. But there are things you can do to get those messages back from other sources.

Here are a few methods you can use to recover deleted Facebook messages, as well as back up your messages so you don't lose them in the future:

Here are a few methods that could help you retrieve those messages:

Check your archived conversations

If you archived the messages instead of deleting them, you can easily recover them, as Facebook always keeps your archived chats.

1. Open the Messenger desktop, web, or mobile app.

2. From the chats section of the app, type the name of the person you were talking to in the search bar.

3. Then simply click or tap their name to open the conversation and view everything.

Quick tip: If you don't want to see certain chats in your inbox on Messenger, but you're not sure if you should delete them, consider archiving the messages instead of deleting them.

Ask the recipient for a copy, or screenshot, of the message or conversation

When you delete a message, it only happens on your end. The person you're talking to will still be able to see it, so they can help you fill in the gap if they didn't delete them on their end as well.

Check if your Facebook messages were sent to your email

This only works if you have all email notifications enabled for your account. But if it's enabled, you should be able to search for the conversation or message within your email account.

Use Android file manager

If you're using an Android device and you have Messenger installed, your device could have those deleted messages in the app's cache. You can access it using any Android file manager, and if you don't have one installed, you can find plenty of them on the App Store.

1. Open the file manager app on your Android device.

2. Navigate to the Internal Storage > com.facebook.katana > fb_temp

3. Here you'll find messages from your recent history, and with any luck, your deleted ones will be among them.

Quick tip: If you're using an iOS device, you can't recover your deleted Facebook messages using any file app. However, you can do so using a recovery program.

Download your Facebook information

Backing up your Facebook information, including your messages, is a good idea if you don't ever want to lose any of it.

1. Using the desktop app or browser version, go to your Facebook settings.

2. Within the Your Facebook Information tab on the left sidebar, click Download your information

3. Under the Select file options heading, make sure you've selected a date range in the last dropdown.

4. To only get your messages, click Deselect All under the Select information to download heading and recheck the box next to Messages.

5. Scroll all the way down to the Start your download heading and click Request a download. Facebook will email you the file once it's ready for viewing.

How to Recover Deleted Facebook Messages

You've probably deleted a Facebook message at least once in your life. Maybe you were annoyed at that person, or perhaps you wanted to organize your inbox.

But whatever the reason, the chat is gone from your app and computer forever once you delete it. So, what happens if you need that information back?

You can try various methods to retrieve these messages, or at least what was said in them. This article explains how to recover deleted Facebook messages.

How to See Deleted Messages on Facebook Archive

Your first place to go is the archived messages. If you can’t find the message you need in your chats, the reason could be because you deleted it. But you might have archived it instead, which is possible since the buttons on the app are one below the other.

Follow these steps to find archived messages on your computer:

  1. Navigate to the Facebook site and click on the Messenger icon in the top right.
  2. Pick See all in Messenger.
  3. Click the icon next to Chats.
  4. Pick Archived chats from the dropdown menu.
  5. Scroll down to see if you can find the message you need.

If you want to find archived messages in the Messenger app, the only way you can do this is with the names of the other people in the chat. Follow the steps below to do this:

  1. Launch the Messenger app on your phone.
  2. In the search bar, type the name of the person in the missing chat.
  3. If you archived the message, it’ll show below. Tap to view it.

In both cases, you need to send a new message if you want to put the chat back in your main inbox.

If you can’t find the messages you're looking for using this method, you probably deleted them. But don't lose hope—you can still try a few other things.

How to Find Deleted Facebook Messages on Android

Android devices store cache data from almost every app you use. So, if you use your Messenger on your Android phone, there's a good chance you'll be able to dig deep enough to find the deleted chats:

  1. If you don't already have a file manager installed, download one from the Google Play Store.
  2. Launch it and navigate to Main Storage > Android > data > com.facebook.ocra > cache > fb_temp.
  3. Inside that folder, you can find messages from recent history. Hopefully, you'd be able to locate the deleted message.

Unfortunately, if you use an iPhone, it's much harder to access the phone's backup for Messenger correspondence. In that situation, you may need to try a third-party iPhone data recovery tool.

How to Get Deleted Facebook Messages From the Other Recipients

If still can't find the deleted messages, another way to go is to contact the other side of the conversation. When you delete a Facebook chat, it’s gone forever on your end. However, the person you were talking to probably still has a copy.

The easiest thing to do is to ask them for a screenshot of the conversation, or to resend it to you by copying and pasting.

If you need the information for official purposes, such as proving that you were talking to someone at a certain time, you can ask them to download a copy of their Facebook data.

Remember, though, that they don’t have to share all the information with you, and can pick and choose what to download and send over.

As a final attempt, you can check two more places. If you know some of the content in the messages, search your email inbox. This method will only work if you have email notifications enabled on Facebook.

The last place to check is your most recent Facebook backup file. If you don’t know how to create that backup, you probably don't have one. In that case, you’ve exhausted your options.

Create a Backup for Current Messages

To stop this situation from happening again, back up your messages. One way to do this is by enabling your email notifications. Follow the steps below to do this:

  1. Open Facebook on your desktop and click the down arrow at the top right-hand corner of the page.
  2. Pick Settings & privacy from the menu, and then pick Settings again.
  3. Scroll down until you see Notifications on the left menu and click it.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Email.
  5. Pick All notifications, except the ones you turn off. This ensures you’ll get the messages in your inbox in the future.

You can also create a backup of your messages. Unlike WhatsApp backup, which allows you to recover any deleted message, Facebook's version only saves your messages until a certain point in time.

However, creating backups on Facebook can still be useful. If you want to do so, follow the steps below:

  1. As before, navigate to the Settings page on your computer.
  2. Choose Your Facebook information from the left menu.
  3. Click on Download your information.
  4. On this page, you can choose exactly what you want to back up, and the dates you want included. If you only want a backup of your messages, click on Deselect all. Then, reselect Messages.
  5. Hit Create File.

The process takes a few minutes. Once it’s done, you’ll receive an email with the backup file. You can also download it from the Available copies tab.

Now You Know How to Retrieve Deleted Facebook Messages

So, can you recover deleted Facebook messages? On some occasions, yes. But only in a limited number of cases.

Even if you like everything to be completely organized and easy to access, it doesn’t mean you need to delete old messages. This goes for any messaging software—not just Facebook Messenger.

Most places offer an archive option, which keeps your main inbox neat, but still allows you access that information in the future if you need it. Utilize these to ensure that your messages are available.

Facebook Messenger finally has a function to delete messages. But this can only be done in the first 10 minutes after sending, writes Techcrunch.

What happened

Facebook fulfilled one of its promises. Yesterday, users had the opportunity to delete sent messages. This feature has been there before. But then the message could only be deleted in your chat - the interlocutor had it. Now it can be removed for everyone. But there is a caveat: the function is available only in the first 10 minutes after sending. nine0011

How to delete a message

To do this, hold down the sent message, click "Delete" and select the "Delete for all" option. This feature is only available in apps that have received the latest update.
It is also available on the desktop version of Facebook. To do this, click on the three dots next to the message, click "Delete" and select "Delete for everyone."
After deletion, the message "You deleted the message" appears in the chat. For interlocutors, this notification looks like this: "(username) deleted the message. " nine0011

Why Facebook allowed deleting messages

It all started in April 2018. Then the publication Techcrunch said that Mark Zuckerberg and other top managers of the social network can delete their messages from correspondence.
There were no traces left in the chat. Everything looked as if Mark's interlocutors were talking to themselves.
The news quickly gained popularity and soon Facebook promised that it would allow all users of the social network to delete messages. The feature began testing in November 2018. nine0011

Delete a message on Facebook - clear the chat in the correspondence in the messenger

Almost every user has a moment when they have to clear the Facebook messenger. There may be various reasons: you need to free up additional memory on your mobile device, or you just need to put things in order so that unnecessary information does not interfere and there are no prerequisites for an awkward situation in the form of an erroneous message.

Therefore, let's consider how to delete unnecessary messages in the messenger, and how this can be done in the best way in a given situation. nine0003

  • Methods of cleaning the messenger
  • Data storage
  • Removing personal messages on a computer
    • How to erase the correspondence from the addressee
  • Message Ridification of the Mestone 9000 9000 9000 9000 expired private messages can be subdivided as follows:

    • by device type : on a computer, in an application for mobile devices; nine0046
    • by the number of messages that are supposed to be deleted : single messages, chain or entire correspondence;
    • if possible restore : archive or delete permanently;
    • available to users : delete only at yourself, delete from recipients.

    Data storage

When you send a message using the Facebook messenger, be sure to take into account the following circumstances: the message sent in the messenger automatically ends up on one of the company's servers and is stored there, because it is available not only on the devices of users leading correspondence among themselves. That is, by clicking on "Send", the user sends a message to the online space, where he no longer has power over the information contained in the message. However, there are some exceptions. But more on that later. nine0003

Interesting fact! Information appeared on the network that a new application should be released in 2021, which is a symbiosis of Messenger, Instagram and WhatsUpp. It is assumed that this product will combine all the best qualities of these applications. There is also information that in this software, the developers intend to use end-to-end encryption, which involves storing the content of correspondence only with the users who participated in it.

Deleting private messages on a computer

The desktop version of Facebook provides a number of options for cleaning content in the segment responsible for personal correspondence. You can delete both some messages and a message chain, as well as delete the correspondence in the messenger completely or archive it with the possibility of recovery.

    1. Sign in to your profile to enable any of these options.
    2. Click the icon in the top bar to open the private messaging window, at the bottom of the window on the left side, click "Open Messenger". nine0046

    1. In the opened column with contacts, move the mouse cursor over any of the users with whom you corresponded. Click on the three dots that appear.

    1. In the drop-down box in the list of options you will see "Move to Archive" and "Delete".
    2. Select the action you want to perform in relation to the correspondence with this user.

If archiving is selected, the system performs the required actions without requiring a prompt to confirm them. If after a while you need to find the archived correspondence, click on the gear-shaped sign located next to the “Chats” option, click on “Chat Archive”, write something to the user whose correspondence you want to view. And you will see the archived chat in the main list. nine0003

If you chose "Delete" , then the chat with this user will be deleted without the possibility of recovery.

Attention! Be sure to keep in mind that these actions archive or delete correspondence only from the sender. The recipient of all these messages remains available until he archives or deletes them on his own initiative.

How to delete correspondence from the addressee

Sometimes there are situations when you need to delete a message sent in the messenger not only from yourself, but also from the addressee of the correspondence. This can only be done for single messages. nine0003

    1. Open a chat where there are messages you want to delete.
    2. Click on the "..." next to the "Forward" and "React" options.
    3. In the drop-down menu, click on "Delete".
    4. If no more than ten minutes have passed since the message was sent, you will see a notification prompting you to choose the option of deleting: only for yourself or for yourself and the interlocutor.

Alas, Facebook provides for deleting old messages only from the sender. Moreover, the recipient will have access to this content, even if the sender completely deletes his account from the social network. The function of completely deleting messages from the system is available only in one case: if these are single messages sent for no more than 10 minutes before the desire to delete them arose. You need to remember this and take seriously all the information sent to other users of the social network, so that you do not have to regret it later. nine0003

Deleting messages on a mobile device

The procedure for deleting a message on a mobile device is very similar to the desktop version of the social network. In the mobile version, you can also clean out all the dialogues that clog it from your messenger, and you can also delete single messages from the interlocutor.

Paradoxically, the app for mobile devices is reproached for supposedly complicated access to the messenger cleaning function. But in fact, in this case, everything is very simple. nine0003

    1. Open the application, and in it - the "Chats" tab.
    2. Select the contact you want and swipe it from right to left.

    1. Icons will appear: "Trash" - means to completely clear the chat with this person, "Bell" - if necessary, disable message notifications, "Ξ" - additional functions where you can find and archive the chat.

By the way! If you swipe from left to right on a contact's name, a list of options will appear with which you can call the user, conduct a video call session, or instantly take a photo to send in a message.
