WhatsApp messages no longer need to be typed; but dictation is just smarter keyboard at work

By: Tech Desk New Delhi | Updated: January 21, 2019 16:57 IST

WhatsApp users can directly start dictating a message from within the app using a mic icon on the keyboard.

WhatsApp users can now rely on the mic feature in their Android or iOS keyboard to dictate messages and send to contacts. This means WhatsApp users do not have to type messages, though they will need to manually press send in order to push the messages across. Also, this feature can be used for other apps too, like typing a mail on Gmail.

The dictation feature can be found in the keyboard for those who are using the Google Keyboard or the regular iOS keyboard on their iPhone. This kind of dictation feature is already available for smart voice assistants such as Google Assistant and Siri as well.

Users can directly start dictating a message from within the app using the mic icon on the keyboard.  This applies on both Android and iOS apps, and is in fact not limited to just one app.

The dictation method can be used for any other messaging app as well, and not just WhatsApp.

To use the dictation feature, users will need to open WhatsApp and then the contact they wish to send message to.

Next pull out the keyboard used for typing WhatsApp message. WhatsApp users on Android will find a black mic icon on top right, while this icon is present on the bottom right for iOS users.

Click on the mic icon to start dictating a message. It does seem to understand when to put ‘,’ when one says “comma” and ‘?’ when “question mark” is said. However to add the symbol for  full stop, one has to say the word itself.

Nevertheless, when done dictating a message, one will need to press the send button to finally send this dictated message to the contact. Keep in mind that it is best to enunciate each word when dictating and  try not doing this in a crowded environment since the device might not pick up all the words.

WhatsApp users can edit a dictated message before sending it as well, though that will need to be done by typing and editing the text that has been written.

The feature might come in handy for long messages when one can just use their voice instead on fingers to frame a message. Devices like Apple Watch also offer the option to dictate a reply, rather than type it out.

How to type a voice message in WhatsApp with text?

September 17, 2022 / Whatsapp FAQ

Is there voice typing in WhatsApp, is it possible to decode voices and translate them into printed sentences? We answer these questions and tell you in detail how the messenger works.

How to record a voice?

Voice text input in WhatsApp is a feature that everyone will need at least once. Judge for yourself, sometimes typing a message is simply inconvenient - for example, if you are driving or want to write a very long outgoing message. This is where voices come to the rescue: after all, dictating is much faster and easier than typing.

No special skills are required from you, everything is elementary:

  • Go to the messenger and open the desired chat;
  • Find the message box on the bottom panel;
  • On the right you will see the microphone icon - that's what we need.

Translating text into a voice message in WhatsApp is done as follows: press and hold the microphone icon while you speak. As soon as you release the button, the recording will automatically go to the chat.

In addition, you can hold the icon and swipe up - this is the "hands-free" option. Now speak as much as you want, without holding the button, the recording goes automatically. The duration of the audio message is displayed on the screen.

Once you're done dictating, you can click on the pause icon in the center or the blue button on the right. If you change your mind about sending audio, click on the trash can icon.

A few words about how to enable voice typing in WhatsApp on Android/iPhone. You do not need to activate the option separately, it is already built into the functionality of the messenger - you can use it or not (at your discretion). But for it to work correctly, you need to allow access to the microphone. This can be done in the device settings.

Now let's look at the situation from the other side. You can record a voice instead of printed text - is it possible to convert a voice message to text in WhatsApp? Let's try to figure it out!

How to decrypt an audio message?

The next question that interests a lot of people is how to translate voice messages into text in WhatsApp? Unfortunately, there is no special option for this - although it would be very convenient. As, for example, in the social network VKontakte - just click on the button to get a transcript of the text.

The ability to translate a voice message into text in WhatsApp was announced by the developers back in 2021. While this feature is not available even in beta testing mode - there is still no information about the timing of the appearance. It remains to be patient and hope that the built-in solution will appear soon!

Previously, it was possible to use the services of special bots (for example, Texty) - it was enough just to send the incoming message for automatic decryption. Now, unfortunately, they are not available.

So how do I read a WhatsApp voice message as text, are there any options left? There are third-party applications, you can easily find them in the App Store and Google Play stores upon request. It is up to you to decide whether to use them or not, no one guarantees the security of personal data.

How to send messages to WhatsApp and Telegram by voice

Google Assistant is good for everyone. Although it will be difficult to chat with him in the same way as with Alice, he should be appreciated primarily for his functionality. Google's voice assistant does a great job with small tasks like setting an alarm, reminders, and managing a smart home. However, I personally could not call Google Assistant really convenient because of its inability to work with messages in instant messengers. Fortunately, that is now in the past.

How to send a message by voice using Google Assistant

Google released an update to Google Assistant for Android, in which the assistant learned how to send messages to WhatsApp and Telegram. Now you can even answer incoming messages with your voice from the locked screen. And due to the fact that the message can now be dictated by voice, for those who are too lazy to type text on the keyboard, this can be a good alternative to audio messages, which are not accepted by all users.

How to send a message by voice

  • To send a message to Telegram or WhatsApp using Google Assistant, call the assistant with the command “Ok Google”;
  • Say: "Send a message to Telegram/WhatsApp", specifying the messenger you use;
  • State the name of the addressee for whom the message is intended;

Dictate messages by voice

  • Dictate the message, using punctuation marks where they are needed;
  • Check what is written and correct errors if any;
  • If everything is in order, confirm sending - this can be done by voice or manually.

I was pleasantly surprised that Google Assistant has no problems recognizing names written in Latin, specific surnames and nicknames. To whomever I tried to send a message, the assistant accurately recognized the right user and sent the message to the exact address. So you don't have to worry about Google Assistant sending something important to the wrong person. Although, of course, just in case, it’s better to keep an eye on him - you never know.

How to make Google Assistant read messages

But if Google Assistant has no problems with sending messages, I personally did not succeed in getting it to read incoming messages, although this possibility was announced. Despite the fact that all the settings are set correctly and Google Assistant has access to my notifications, the assistant flatly refuses to read unread messages. Perhaps this feature will just be added a little later.

Longreads for you

I changed my smartphone to a new one and constantly encountered with the same problem - data transfer. Many manufacturers even make their own applications for this, but they do not work perfectly. Either they forget some program, or they lose a contact from the phone book. In such a situation, it is better to act with time-tested manual transfer methods. Moreover, in 2023 they work as efficiently as possible and do not take time at all.
