How to stop notifications on facebook from a friend

How to Turn Off Facebook Notifications (on Mobile and Desktop)

Facebook is excellent for keeping in touch with family and friends, but sometimes it can feel a little too in touch.

Maybe you don’t want to know every time your politically zealous college friend creates a status. Or maybe you’re a member of an extremely chatty Facebook group and you’re tired of the notifications blowing up your phone. You don't want to block them, but you do want to mute them without having to leave the group and hurt some feelings — thankfully, Facebook has made that possible.

You can turn off Facebook notifications.

How to turn off Facebook notifications

  1. Go to 'Settings'
  2. Select 'Notifications'
  3. Edit Facebook notifications based on device
  4. Click the toggle buttons next to the notification type to 'Off'

If you have a Facebook marketing strategy, which includes a Facebook business page that you do want to receive notifications about, you still can. Facebook allows you to pick and choose which notifications you receive on what device.

TIP: Not sure if using Facebook for business is the right choice for you? Read reviews from peers to help you make the best decision for you.

I’ll go over the different ways to turn off Facebook notifications on mobile (skip ahead to mobile now) and desktop, so no matter where you are, you can have control over your notifications.

How to turn off Facebook notifications on desktop

Let’s say you’re working from home on your laptop and are distracted by Facebook notifications popping up in the corner every 15 minutes. That’s not great news for your productivity, and if a deadline is looming on the horizon, you’ll quickly become frustrated. Let’s turn those notifications off while you’re on your laptop!

1. In Facebook, go to 'Settings'

The easy-to-miss downward arrow in the menu bar is where you’ll find the option to navigate to ‘Settings.

2. Click on ‘Notifications’

Once in ‘Settings,’ find ‘Notifications’ in the sidebar on the left.

3. Edit Facebook notification based on device

Choose which device you’d like to change the notifications for. In the above example, you’d want to click on ‘Desktop and Mobile’ to change the way you receive notifications while working on a laptop.

4. Click the ‘Turn Off’ button next to the notification type you want to turn off

In this example, you can turn off individual Facebook notifications such as changes to an event you joined or comments on posts you’re tagged in. You can also turn off all notifications on your desktop by clicking the very first ‘Turn Off’ button next to Chrome.

While you’re here, you might as well update your notification preferences in the other categories: on Facebook, e-mail, and text message.

Congratulations! You’ve turned off Facebook notifications on your desktop.

How to turn off Facebook notifications on mobile

If you’re tired of your phone persistently dinging with Facebook notifications, I have good news — you don’t have to keep living life like that. Smartphones are already cluttered enough as is. So let’s remove those unnecessary notifications.

1. Go to 'Settings'

On mobile, 'Settings' can be found by clicking on the menu button. It looks like three horizontal lines in the bottom right corner of your screen. Scroll down to find 'Settings,' the second-to-last option.

2. Go to 'Notification Settings'

When you click on 'Settings,' a drop-down menu will appear. Select 'Notification Settings' from that.

3. Edit your notification preferences by notification type

You'll notice a long list of notification types that you can choose to edit. If you want to turn off all push notifications, turn the first toggle button on under 'Mute Push Notifications.'

4. Hit the toggle buttons next to the notification type to turn it 'Off'

If you're annoyed with getting notifications about people you may know, click on that section. It will take you to a new page where you can edit where and if you receive those types of notifications. Switch the toggles to 'Off' or gray.

You now have control over your Facebook notifications!

With those easy steps, you have decluttered your phone and can avoid silly distractions like Aunt Mildred posting her fifth cat picture of the day in the family group page. Just make sure to check Facebook once in a while to ensure you aren't missing out on anything!

How to disable irrelevant Facebook notifications?

I get too many irrelevant Facebook notifications from friends of the activities which do not involve me at all. This include status updates, posting pictures, sometime comment replies and what not. I am not sure if I get these from all friends or a chosen few.

This is what my notifications look like

These are my notification settings

I tried contacting Facebook support so many times. Never received any response.

"Get Notifications" option is already unchecked for these friends. I even tried enabling "Get Notifications" and then disabled it just to make Facebook aware of it but it didn't stop notifications.

It looks a like a way to keep me active but instead it has made me leave Facebook for a very long time. What settings should I do to disable these notifications?

Update

New settings UI allow you to turn off these notifications easily.

  • facebook
  • notifications
  • facebook-notifications

It's Facebooks way of getting you to use more Facebook. Which in your case, failed miserably.

They send these notifications to people who haven't had much of interaction on facebook to have a page full of notification.

Unfortunately, the way to get rid of these is to use more Facebook, get more friends and to interact with them. Just so that they can replace these notifications with something else.

Source: I've seen those when my mom signed up for Facebook and abandoned it for some days. Her notification was full of these craps.

Some friends are designated "close friends" and you get updated on everything they do. Try checking specific friends you get a lot of notifications from. Make sure they're not listed as close friends (Sometimes FB will do this without telling you).

Directions:
1. Go to the profile of the friend in question.
2. At the top of the profile, in the cover photo, locate the friend status dropdown menu. It's on its own row.
3. Change status from "close friends" to "friends" or "aquaintances."

You'll have to do this for each friend. Report back if it works!

As answered by Patrick in the comments of the question, they hid the turn off option too deep.

First, Enable desktop notifications

Then disable recent notifications

First make sure that these friends are not added any kind of list like Close Friends or any Custom List.

You can turn off notifications for Close Friends:

You’ll automatically get notifications when people on your Close Friends list post to Facebook, but you can turn these notifications on or off:

  1. Click down arrow in the top-right and select Settings.
  2. Click Notifications in the left column.
  3. Click Close Friend Activity, then click On Facebook.
  4. Click next to Close Friends activity, then select On or Off

If you're getting notifications when people post and they aren't on your Close Friends list, learn how to receive fewer notifications.

If above doesn't help, try this:

On your phone:

  • Go to Account Settings
  • Go to Notifications
  • Go to Mobile Push under the section How You Get Notifications
  • Uncheck Activity you've missed and anything else you rather not be notified about

How to turn off Facebook notifications on Android

If you read my previous post on how to sync game progress on Android, you would know that I now have not one, but two of these devices. One frustrating issue I've run into when servicing multiple devices is multiple notifications. Every time I received a new notification, friend request, or Facebook message, both of my devices notified me at the same time. After a while it becomes annoying.

Gmail, Google+, and Facebook were the three most annoying apps when talking about multiple notifications, and deleting apps on one of those devices was not a solution I agreed to. So, for starters, today I will try to disable notifications from Facebook for Android.

Even if you don't have several Android devices, you don't need to break away. In this post, we will not only show you how you can turn off all notifications, but also talk about turning off message alerts from individual friends that you want to ignore.

So let's get started...

Turn off all notifications

The first thing we'll see is turning off all notifications from Facebook on Android. If you are using Jelly Bean on your device, you can directly turn off the app drawer notification for the Facebook app in Android settings. We have already seen how this is done in one of our previous articles.

If your device has not yet received the Jelly Bean update, you will need to disable these notifications in the Facebook app settings.

Open Facebook for Android on your device, open the menu in the app and select Settings . Scroll down to find the Notice option there. If you want to turn off all notifications from the app (comments, wall posts, messages, etc.), just uncheck this box.

However, if you only want to disable certain ones, such as messages and wall posts, you will have to uncheck the corresponding boxes. You can also leave all notifications active but turn them off or just turn on the vibrate alert. When you're done, just hit the back button to save your settings.

This could disable all or some specific types of notifications. Let's now see how you can turn off message notifications from certain friends.

Disable notification from certain friends

Open the Facebook app and click the three lines button in the top left corner to open its navigation bar. Using this panel, you can easily navigate from one section to another. Click the search box at the top and enter the name of the contact you want to block. Click on a friend's name in the search results to open their wall.

Click on the message button on his wall to open the Messaging page. If you've recently talked to this friend, you can open the conversation window by using the message button between notifications and new friend requests.

You must now press the information button in the upper right corner. Here you can turn off the notification for this conversation. You can turn off notifications permanently or turn them off for a specific period of time. If you choose a limited time, notifications will be turned on automatically for that friend after the time has elapsed.

Conclusion

Here's how you can turn off Facebook notifications on Android and limit them to only one of your many Android devices (if you have more than one). Hope this comes in handy. I am sure that the second part of the post about turning off notifications from specific contacts will be useful to many. After all, we all had Facebook friends like that, right?
