When Instagram added the Stories feature in 2016, it was designed as a way to compete with Snapchat, which was absolutely exploding in popularity at the time. Like Snapchat, Stories provides users with a way to make a limited-time (24-hour) post for other users to view before it disappears forever. And when it launched, Instagram users flocked to the feature and it quickly became one of the biggest features on the platform.

Since then, Instagram has added many additional features, including the ability to add songs to your Instagram stories.

This allows people to make their content more engaging to appeal to their followers and help them to gain new ones.

Here's how you can utilize the Instagram music feature and add all of your favorite tracks to your next Instagram Story.

Best ways to put music on your Instagram Story

There are several ways to add music to your Instagram Story, and they all give you different options for music choices. You can include certain songs from Instagram itself as well as popular music services such as the Spotify app, Soundcloud, Apple Music, and Shazam.

All Instagram stories last up to 15 seconds per individual Story, so it's important to find a track – or section of a track – that fits into that time window. Let’s take a look at the options you can use to find a song that fits your Story.

Add music from Instagram

Adding music from Instagram itself is the most straightforward option. Here’s how to do it:

  • Open the Instagram app and click on the plus icon at the top of the screen. This will bring you to the "add to Story" screen where you can create your Instagram Story.
  • Once you create your Story (video, photo, GIF, etc.), you can select from Instagram's music library.
  • To add a track to your Story, click on the Sticker button and then tap on the Music sticker.

This will open up the Instagram music library, where you can then browse through thousands of songs. Keep in mind that not all songs are available in every country due to copyright restrictions. Business accounts are also more limited in song selection.

When you begin to browse, you'll see a "for you" section. This is determined by Instagram's algorithm and the accounts you follow, who you interact with, and your own posting history.

If you want to explore beyond these tunes, you can tap on the browse button at the top of the screen. This will allow you to search through Instagram's music catalog. You can also manually type in the name of a song or artist if you are looking for something specific.

When selecting songs, you have the option to use a segment of the song that lasts from 5 to 15 seconds. You’ll pick the length using a slider within the app. Then, click on the "Done" button and you have successfully added the selected song to your Instagram Story.

Add music from Spotify

If you can't find what you're looking for on Instagram, the next best place to search is Spotify. Spotify is one of the most popular music streaming apps, and chances are it has exactly what you need. To integrate it with Instagram, you need a Spotify Premium account, which costs $9.99 per month for individual plans.

To add a track from Spotify, follow these steps:

  • Open the Spotify app
  • Click on the song that you want to add
  • Click on the ellipses in the top right corner of the screen
  • Scroll down and click share in the menu
  • Select Instagram stories

Spotify will then automatically open the Instagram app for you. It will update your Story with the selected track and also add the cover art of the song or album.

When you use this method, the song will not play directly on Instagram. After you post your Story, the app will create a link in the top left corner that says "Play on Spotify." Your followers must click on the picture of the album or song so they can open Spotify to listen to the audio.

Add music from SoundCloud

SoundCloud is primarily used by up-and-coming artists, and Instagram stories is a great place to showcase this type of music. That’s particularly true if you’re into music production or songwriting and looking for a way to share your own tunes.

You can post SoundCloud songs on Instagram stories by following these steps:

  • Open the SoundCloud app
  • Select the song you want to share
  • Click on the share icon and select "Share to Instagram stories."

This will then open up the Instagram app, which will automatically add the album or song artwork as the image for your Story. You can also add a sticker with the SoundCloud logo and song title on it. This allows users to click through to your desired SoundCloud page to listen to the song. You can also add hashtags, GIFs, and text to the image to help other users discover it.

Add music from Apple Music

Sharing music from Apple Music to your Instagram Story is a great way to share your favorite songs with your friends and followers. Like other third-party integrations with Instagram Stories, you can’t share the music’s actual audio directly in the Instagram app. The good news here, though, is that Apple Music has more than 90 million songs, so you shouldn’t have any issue finding the song you want to share.

The process is simple:

  • Open the Apple Music app and click on the ellipses in the top right corner.
  • You now have the option to "Share."
  • Once you select “Share,” scroll down through the various apps and select Instagram.

This will import the album or song artwork with a link in the top left corner of your Instagram Story to "Play on Apple Music." If users click on the link, it will open the Apple Music app where they can listen to the track.

Add music from Shazam

Have you ever heard a song in public, on a television show, or at a party and you couldn’t quite put your finger on what it is? There’s an app for that, and it’s called Shazam. The app has actually been around for more than 20 years, but it’s grown a lot since Apple bought it in 2017. It’s now native to all iPhones and is even integrated with Siri.

Shazam’s prevalence makes it easier than ever to use the app and identify a song playing in a grocery store. And if you ever felt the need to share your discovery with your Instagram followers, you can do it directly within the Shazam app.

Once you discover a song, here’s what you need to do:

  • Tap on the ellipses in the top right corner of the Shazam app.
  • Click on "Share" and then "Instagram stories" to open Instagram.
  • This will import the album or song artwork and add a "More on Shazam" link in your Instagram Story.

This is a great way to show your friends how you discovered or rediscovered a new song. You can also add text and other stickers to explain how you found this song and where you were when it happened.

Putting song lyrics on your Instagram Story

When you add a track to your Instagram, you can add more than just the audio or artwork. You can add the lyrics, too. The lyrics will fit exactly with the section of the song you choose to highlight in your Story, and you can add them over either a photo or video.

To add lyrics to your Story, use the following steps:

  • Open the Instagram app.
  • Click on the plus sign on your profile pic in the top left corner of the screen to open your Story.
  • Add the photo or video you want to feature.
  • Select the "Music Sticker" to add music directly from Instagram.
  • Search for the song you want to add to your Story.
  • Once you select the song, tap on the album artwork that appears.

You now have the option to add lyrics in several different font types. You can also alter the size of the lyrics and where they appear in the Story. Keep in mind that not all music in the Instagram music catalog allows you to add lyrics.

Summary

Sharing music with your friends and followers on social media is one of the greatest ways to connect with people. And with Instagram Stories, you can broadcast your new favorite tracks while discovering new music through people you follow on Instagram. You can also click through music-related hashtags, which is just another way to find the best new tunes to add to your playlist.

How to Share Songs to Instagram Stories from Spotify, Apple Music, and More

We can’t deny how art and music helped everyone survive the year 2020 amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Over the past few months, I’ve discovered a lot of good songs that I’ve never even heard before and the same might be the case for you. If you’re looking for a way to easily share the songs you found with your friends, sharing them to Instagram Stories is an option that you should consider.

Share Songs to Instagram Stories

While some consider songs and playlists to be something personal and don’t share with anyone, others find joy in helping others find good music. If you’re someone willing to share songs, we will be explaining the method you can follow to quickly share songs to Instagram from your music streaming platform of choice. With all that said, let’s get started with the list.

Table Of Contents

Share Songs to Instagram Stories from Spotify

Spotify is the music streaming service that made sharing songs to social media platforms go mainstream. If you are a Spotify user wondering how to get started, here’s what you have to do. Play a song that you would like to share, tap on the vertical three dots icon at the top right corner, and choose ‘Share’.

From the Share sheet that appears now, tap on Instagram. The app will automatically generate the story with the song’s album art. Once it does all the heavy lifting for you, tap on the ‘Your story’ button to share the song. Your followers can then press the ‘Play on Spotify’ button to tune in to the song you just shared from their phone’s Spotify app. This is a Spotify tip everyone should know and you can learn more Spotify tips and tricks from our linked article.

Share Songs to Instagram Stories from Apple Music

Following Spotify’s lead, Apple Music recently added the feature to let users share songs on Instagram Stories. If you’re an Apple Music user, you can access the sharing settings by tapping on the three dots menu next to the song’s title and artist name. From the pop-up that appears now, tap on the ‘Share song’ option.

Here, choose ‘Instagram Stories’ from the list of available options. You can now add the song to your Instagram Story. Although Apple Music was late to the party, its implementation stands out. When you view a story that shares a song from Apple Music, you’ll notice a beautiful wave effect in the background, which elevates the aesthetics. It is undoubtedly my favorite implementation of the bunch. This way, you can easily share your top 25 most played songs for the listening pleasure of your Instagram followers as well.

Share Songs to Instagram Stories from TIDAL

TIDAL, the beloved music streaming service of audiophiles, has also gained Instagram Story sharing integration. To get started, tap on the vertical three dots menu at the bottom right corner. Once the pop-up appears with a set of options, choose ‘Share’.

Soon after you choose Share, TIDAL asks you to specify the target platform. As you can see below, the first option on the Share page is Instagram Stories. Tap on it and wait for the app to redirect you to Instagram.

Share Songs to Instagram Stories from SoundCloud

As far as song sharing from SoundCloud is concerned, the method is much more straightforward, thanks to the presence of the Share button right at the music player interface. All you have to do is tap on it and choose ‘Stories’ with the Instagram logo on it.

The rest of the process is quite simple. SoundCloud will take you to Instagram’s story adding page and you can tap to add the song to your story. The final story has a neat blur to it with SoundCloud’s logo and it looks decent enough.

Share Songs to Instagram Stories from JioSaavn

JioSaavn’s UI refresh update made it on par with leading music streaming services in terms of features. If JioSaavn is your preferred music streaming platform, here’s what you need to know to share songs from the app to Instagram. First up, tap on the vertical three dots menu to access the pop-up. Once the pop-up appears, tap on Share.

When the Share sheet opens, choose Instagram Stories. Within moments, JioSaavn will take you to Instagram and you can share that song you can’t get enough of with your friends and family.

Share Songs to Instagram Stories from Wynk Music

If you’re someone who uses Wynk Music, you can share songs to Instagram Stories. When you’re in the player interface, tap on ‘More’. You will then see the Share button as the first option. Tap on it and wait for Wynk Music to take you to Instagram’s story upload UI.

Unlike most apps on this list, Wynk Music relies on Android’s share sheet. As a result, you will have to spend a minute to spot ‘Instagram Stories’ from the list of available apps. Once you find it, tap on it to share the story. That said, I’m not happy with Wynk Music’s implementation. As you can see below, the developers have not added a direct option to open Wynk Music from Instagram and all you get is an album art with the app’s logo in it. In a way, you could say that Wynk Music reverse rickrolled me. I hope Wynk Music fixes this in a future update.

Share Songs to Instagram Stories from Shazam

Although Shazam isn’t technically a music streaming service, millions of people across the globe use the app to identify songs. If you are too excited after you find a catchy song using Shazam, you can share it with your Instagram followers right from Shazam. To do so, open a song’s Shazam page, tap on the vertical three dots menu, and choose ‘Share’.

From the Share sheet, look out for ‘Shazam – Instagram Stories’. Do keep in mind that this option will have Shazam’s logo and not Instagram’s logo. You can take a look at the image below for reference. Once you find it, tap on it, and share the story on Instagram.

Share Songs to Instagram Stories from Gaana

Gaana’s implementation of Instagram song sharing is a bit tricky and unreliable. While you won’t see an option to share a song to Instagram from the player interface, the option appears when you access the track from the album section. Even then, it simply generates the album art like Wynk Music and doesn’t offer a direct option to play the song from the Gaana app.

If you’re still interested, you can access the album view, tap on the horizontal three dots button, and choose ‘Share to Instagram Story’. As you can see below, Gaana has not offered the option to access the app.

Share Songs to Instagram Stories from Pandora

In September of 2019, Pandora added song sharing capabilities to its app. To use the feature, open the app, and play one of your favorite songs. In the music player interface, tap on the horizontal three dots menu present next to the track’s title and choose Share. From the share sheet, choose Instagram Stories. You can check out the preview of the generated story in the image below.

Share Songs to Instagram Stories from Deezer

Deezer is another music streaming service that has an option to share songs to Instagram Stories. You can tap on the horizontal three dots menu next to a song and choose ‘Share to Instagram Stories’ to get started. Image: Deezer Community

One unique aspect of Deezer’s take on Instagram stories is the fact that you can share up to 5 lines of lyrics in the story. This could come in handy at those times when you want to put an extra emphasis on a specific portion of the song. Image: Deezer

Streaming Services without Instagram Story Sharing

Currently, there are only two major streaming services that don’t support sharing songs to Instagram Stories. Out of the two, YouTube Music will soon join the others as it has been testing music sharing feature. There’s no word on the Amazon Music front though.

  • YouTube Music

Share Songs within Instagram

If you’re in a hurry, you’ll be glad to know that you can share songs using Instagram’s music feature without relying on third-party apps. However, do note that your song selection is limited to Instagram’s music library. To begin with, choose a background for your story and tap on the sticker button at the top right portion of the Story interface. From the options that appear now, choose ‘Music’.

In the search box, search for the song you’re interested to share and choose it when the results appear. You can either keep a thumbnail preview of the track or choose to show the lyrics.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can mix and match both of these features. For instance, you can take a screenshot of the player interface (a bit old-fashioned, I know) and choose the exact song from Instagram’s library. The result looks something like what you can see below. The reason why I prefer this method is that viewers can hear a portion of the song without opening the streaming service.

You can share artists, albums, playlists, and individual songs using the Apple Music app. All you have to do is tap on the three-dot menu anywhere in the Apple Music app, and then select "Share Song" from the pop-up action sheet. nine0003

If you want to put music on your Instagram or Facebook stories, and not just add a link in a status update, you'll need to work with albums, playlists, or songs.

To share an album or playlist, open it in the Apple Music app and tap the three-dot menu at the top of the screen. You can press and hold your finger on an album or playlist in your library to bring up the Quick Actions menu . There select "Share Album" or "Share Playlist" .

To share a specific song, press and hold on the Apple Music app to bring up the Quick Actions menu . You can also start playing a song by tapping its name at the bottom of the screen, and then tapping the menu button with three dots. Select "Share" from the menu that appears (see screenshot above).

In the pop-up menu "Share" tap the Instagram or Facebook icon in the second row to share the music to your stories in this app. You may need to scroll horizontally through the list of items to find the icons you need. nine0003

Apple Music automatically creates a picture with the correct dimensions and blurred background to match the colors of the music cover. There will also be a link to Apple Music that your subscribers can click to open that song, album, or playlist on the Apple music service.

Use the Instagram buttons at the top of the screen to add stickers, draw pictures, or insert text into your story. You can also drag the Apple Music image to shrink it, rotate it, or move it around the screen. nine0003

At the bottom of the screen, select the option to share this post for "Your Story" or "Close Friends". Or select "Share" to share with other people.

How do I share Apple Music lyrics (quote) to Instagram stories and other services?

Starting with iOS 14.5, Apple Music introduced a feature that allows subscribers to the streaming service to share the lyrics of the songs they listen to as a set of words. It is possible to send audio clips that contain sung words. We'll walk you through how this feature works.

Many songs in Apple Music have lyrics that can be viewed in real time. This makes it possible to sing along during track playback or use it to jump to certain parts of the song. With iOS 14.5 and later on your iPhone or iPad, you can now share lyrics with a friend or more on social media, including Instagram Stories. nine0003

In some cases, this feature also allows you to share clips with the desired song. For example, if you want to share a song via iMessage, then an Apple Music card will appear in the chat. It will allow the recipient to play a specific part of the song in the message box by simply pressing the play button. Here are the steps to help you share lyrics on Apple Music:

1. Open the Music app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Start playing a song from Apple Music. At the bottom of the screen, tap on a currently playing song to expand the mini player. nine0003

3. Click the Text button in the lower left corner of the screen. If it's greyed out, then Apple Music doesn't have lyrics for the current song and you won't be able to share them.

4. When the lyrics are displayed in real time on the screen, press and hold any word.

5. An action menu will appear allowing you to click on the individual lines of text you want to send. To deselect the selected text, simply tap it again. Note that Apple imposes a character limit. This means that on average you can use between four and six lines depending on the song. It is worth focusing on the limit of 150 characters. nine0003

6. Select a sharing method from the two rows of options, such as Instagram, Facebook, or Messages (iMessage).
