Richard, the one and only DCT editor, recently asked me for a cover image for a Facebook video he was posting for a how-to video I created for Dave’s Computer Tips YouTube channel. When he adds the how-to videos to our Facebook page it is nice to use the same Thumbnail we use on YouTube for continuity. This got me thinking that some of our readers might not know they can add a thumbnail. Adding a thumbnail image to your videos/posts helps make them more attention-grabbing to your potential viewers. I guess it is time to show you how you can add a Thumbnail to your Facebook Video.

I will be showing you how to do this using the Facebook website and not the app. Also, I’m showing you how to do this in an already posted video.

Step 1: Log in to your Facebook account and then head over to the video post you wish to add a thumbnail to. If this is under a page you manage, confirm you are interacting on the page as the admin. You change this by clicking the profile image at the top right above the page’s feed.

Step 2: Once you are at the posted video, look to the top right of it. You should be seeing 3 dots. Click them and in this menu, click on Edit post.

Step 3: Here you will see your post/video. In the middle of the video image, you should see the Video Options button. Click it.

Step 4: Here is where you can adjust the title if you have one and change or add a Thumbnail. Click the down arrow to the right of Change Thumbnail. Click it.

Step 5: They give you a few choices to do your thumbnail:

  • Choose Suggested (They pick some images from the video to choose from)
  • Upload Image
  • Choose From Video (here you can pick a specific frame from the video)

In this article, I will show you how the upload image option works. Click on the dot to the right of Upload Image.

Step 6: You will see an Upload Image button appear. At the top, they show you a message:

Upload a high resolution image that best represents your video.

They also recommend the image size be 1280 x 720.  It’s time to click on the Upload Image button.

Step 7: File explorer will open so you can locate the image you want to upload. Once you find it, select it and then click the Open button at the bottom right.

Step 7: It will now appear under the upload option on the menu. If you are unhappy with this choice, click Cancel and try again, but if you do like the choice, click the Save button.

Step 8: There is still one more step and that is to Save the post. Click the Save button at the bottom. DONE!

Time to update those video thumbnails.

How To Change the Thumbnail on Facebook Video?

People love watching videos on Facebook. They are engaging. Hence, a perfect way to advertise products on Facebook. However, the viewers will see the thumbnail before seeing the content of your Facebook videos. Therefore, the thumbnail should be as attractive as possible.

Generally, Facebook selects images contained in your videos and uses any of the images as the thumbnail to that video. It’s an automatic process. But, Facebook will not always choose the best thumbnail. Thankfully, you can always change that thumbnail.

Although some users operate Facebook on auto-play, most users will see the thumbnail before watching the video. Thumbnails on Facebook videos serve as covers. A thumbnail has the power to put off or attract a viewer. 

An ugly one may revolt viewers from watching your Facebook video. You’ll need to alter your thumbnail if you think it’s not attractive.

You can use images Facebook draws from your video. You can also create your thumbnail or customize your thumbnail.

A good thumbnail photo should be:

  • Above 1200x675 pixels in size. However, don’t exceed 1280x720 pixels. 
  • Aim for an aspect ratio that provides a perfect thumbnail display for your Facebook video. 
  • You can use JPG or PNG formats.

Steps To Modifying a Thumbnail on Facebook 

It’s possible to edit the thumbnail on your Facebook video. However, you can only do it via the web.

Before Posting the Facebook Video

Once you upload the video, Facebook will automatically select an image from your video as a thumbnail. The image may not be visually attractive. So, change it through these steps:

  1. Hover over the video and click on “Edit.”
  2. Click on the “Change Thumbnail” option on the left. You can then select between:
    • Choose suggested – Facebook will give you ten images to choose from. Scroll through the suggested images and click an image that pleases you. 
    • Upload image – you can upload a custom image for your thumbnail. It does not have to be related to the video. Make sure to resize it to fit the requirements.
    • Choose from video – you can choose any frame from the video as the thumbnail. Move the slider at the bottom of the video to browse through frames.
  3. Click “Save” to change the thumbnail and post the video.

After Posting the Facebook Video

It’s possible to alter the thumbnail of an already posted Facebook video. Just follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Facebook on your favorite browser.
  2. Tap on your name in the top left corner to access your profile.
  3. Click on the “Videos” tab.
  4. Open the video you’d wish to edit. 
  5. Click the three dots in the top right corner.
  6. Select the “Edit video” option.
  7. Hover over the video and click the “Edit” button.
  8. Click on “Change Thumbnail” on the left side. You can then select between:
    • Choose suggested – Facebook will give you ten images to choose from. Scroll through the suggested images and click an image that pleases you. 
    • Upload image – you can upload a custom image for your thumbnail. It does not have to be related to the video. Make sure to resize it to fit the requirements.

  9. Click the “Save” button.
  10. Click the “Save” button again to save the changes.

How to add a Facebook cover video

To put a video on the cover, you can either select the desired file from those already uploaded or add a new one.
