How to run a pet instagram

How to start and maintain an Instagram account for your pet

Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms on the planet – and many of the most popular accounts belong to dogs and cats! Here’s how to make your pet #instafamous.

If you’ve ever gotten sucked into row after row of beautiful images on Instagram, you understand the appeal. Scrolling this app has become a common pastime for billions of people around the globe — and many of these users are following at least one dog or cat. In fact, the most followed Instagram cat, @nala_cat, has over 3.8 million followers, while the most followed Instagram dog, @jiffpom, boasts a whopping 8.9 million.

You might not be able to gain that many followers for your own dog or cat – at least not anytime soon. But there’s no reason why you shouldn’t create an Instagram account for him! Taking and posting pictures and videos of your furry friend is a fun pastime that can help you connect with other animal parents out there, and it’s a great way to document memories that’ll last a lifetime. Here’s how to start and grow an Instagram account for your animal companion.

Step 1: Download the app

If you haven’t already, visit an app store and download Instagram. It’s free!

Step 2: Come up with a “handle”

Your “handle” is the username that will represent you (or in this case, your dog or cat) across Instagram. You’ll have to come up with a name that hasn’t already been taken by another user, so get creative!

Step 3: Create your profile

Congratulations, you’re now the proud owner of your dog or cat’s Instagram account! Now that you’ve joined over one billion other users, it’s time to create a profile that’ll help you stand out from the crowd. Hit the “edit profile” button, and input your animal’s name, your website (if applicable), and write a short bio to describe your beloved companion.

Expert tip: Ellen started an Instagram account for her dog, Nelle, to document their life together, and to inspire others. But to gain 33K followers, she had to create an account that was different than all the others out there. “Be genuine,” she says. “Be yourself. Find something that makes you and your pet unique. There are millions of dogs…what makes yours remarkable?” Ellen must have done something right, because Nelle is the cover dog of this issue of Animal Wellness! Flip to the cover to see one of Ellen’s beautiful photos.

This is also a good time to add your profile photo. This tiny image is one of the first things other users will see, and will help them decide whether or not to follow you – so pick a good one! If you don’t have any photos yet, skip to the next step!

Step 4: Take some photos

This is the fun part! You love your furry friend, so sharing his face with the world can be a very gratifying experience. But taking a good picture of a dog or cat isn’t as easy as it looks. Chances are, he’ll be squirmy and uncooperative, and simply getting him to sit still will be a tedious task! To snap a good shot, use his favorite treat to encourage him to “pose”. Make sure you’re either outdoors or in a well-lit room, and use the best camera you have at your disposal to make sure the final result is high in quality. Your phone should work just fine.

Expert tip: Thanks to positive reinforcement, Nelle has become an expert doggie model – but it isn’t always easy! “If she doesn’t want to pose, I tell her it’s okay and we walk away,” says Ellen. “I never make her do something she doesn’t want to. Another piece of advice is if you and your dog are out hiking, take photos on the way back so your dog has had some exercise and let off some steam.”

Step 5: Share your first post

Once you’ve managed to get a good shot, it’s time to post it. You can edit the photo in the app, and apply one of the available filters to make it “pop”. If you haven’t already uploaded your profile photo, you can use this one!

Next, write a caption for your photo. You’ve got space for 2,200 characters (approximately 300 words), so use it wisely! This is the time to determine any specific goals you have for your dog or cat’s account. Do you want to use it as a way to educate others, raise awareness for a cause, or showcase your photography skills? Maybe you’re just hoping to make people laugh, or keep in touch with family and friends. Whatever you decide, use your first post to let others know why you’re there.

Expert tip: Natalie and her dog, Nike, are big believers in using Instagram in a way that best serves you and your animal. “If Instagram is a place for you to keep memories of your pets, then just take and post all the photos and videos you want,” says Natalie. “If you’re using it for photography, then I recommend taking lots of photos to improve.” If you’re hoping to reach more people, she suggests reading articles on the platform, watching YouTube tutorials, and following lots of other Instagram accounts for inspiration. “But most importantly, have fun!” she adds.

Adding hashtags to your post is a great way to be found by other users. To determine which hashtags to use, look at other accounts similar to yours. You can use up to 30 hashtags in a single post, but most experts recommend anywhere between 5 and 11. Try using #dogsofinstagram or #catsofinstagram, and #petstagram to start.

Step 5: Engage with other users

The key to growth on Instagram is engagement. In a nutshell, engagement refers to your interaction with other users — your likes, comments and shares — and their interaction with your account. Engagement also applies to the number of accounts you follow. Typically, the more accounts you follow that are similar to yours, the more followers you’ll get in return.

Expert tip: Kat’s cats, Leopold and Brigand, boast almost 53K followers on Instagram. Her secret? A combination of having fun, and being dedicated to engagement. “Instagram is a social network, and the focus is being shifted more and more to the social part of it,” says Kat. “Go out and explore your feed and all the hashtags, find some accounts you love and go ‘like’ or comment on their pictures.

Step 6: Keep it up!

Consistency is another vital ingredient when it comes to gaining followers. Several studies on social media habits have revealed that to encourage “traffic” to your page, you should be posting a photo one to three times each day.

Expert tip: As a photographer, Jane started an account for her cat, Leo, to encourage her to take photos every day. Her dedication has resulted in 95K followers. But to her, it’s important not to focus on the numbers. “Be sure to have a reason other than gaining popularity when you start,” she says. “If you don’t find joy in taking photos and videos of your pets, then Instagram will end up feeling like a chore sooner or later. And of course, be patient! Growth takes time.”

If popularity isn’t your goal, just continue posting pictures and/or videos of your companion whenever you find the time. This way, you’ll have a digital photo album to look back on in years to come!

What year did you start your successful dog Instagram account?
2014

What makes your Instagram standout on the platform?
Different from most pet accounts on Instagram, I actually don’t run my account as my dogs. They are a huge part of my life and story, but I try and share clean and whimsical lifestyle photos that showcase a snippet of my adventures with my two pups.

What advice do you have for making a pet Instagram unique?
Do just that — be unique. Find your own style and tell the story of your pet. The Instagram community is very close knit and people love following the unique personalities of different pets, so just focus on telling that authentic story.
Photography is very important for such a visual platform. What photography advice would you give a pet parent just starting out on Instagram?
Practice makes perfect!

Talk to us about hashtags! What is the deal with those? Any tips for new users?
I’ve been using very similar hashtags for a while. Use feature account hashtags to increase the chance of exposure for your account. Tag relevant ones and don’t use too many in your caption.

How do you keep Instagram life fun for your pet?
Kokoro and Chibi gets tons of treats whenever we take photos or videos. They get super excited when I pull out my camera or tripod, because it means cookies are coming. We always use positive reinforcement with our pups so that they have a good time even when we’re shooting scenes for a video. And never force them to do something that they aren’t comfortable with. It won’t make for good content anyway!
What advice do you have for partnering with brands on your feed?
Be selective about brands you work with. We only work with brands that we believe in, and keeping the branded content and story authentic is equally important. Try and push yourself to create something more creative than your dog posing next to a product. People will appreciate the extra effort!

What are two mistakes you wish you could tell your younger self to avoid on Instagram?
Don’t get too sucked into it. Give your eyes and your mind a break from the trap of scrolling endlessly for hours. It’s easy to lose yourself in the rabbit hole of Instagram photos, and remember that it’s just a social media platform. Don’t take it too seriously!

How do you remain inspired when creating content for your Instagram?
I actually turn to other outlets outside of Instagram for creative inspiration now. It’s easy for people to all start creating the same sort of “instagrammy” content when you continually look at the same accounts and feeds day to day. Try other platforms or medium to stay inspired and creative.

Is there anything else you’d like to add about your Instagram adventures to date?
Not much, except just have fun with it and don’t take things too seriously! Instagram has been an amazing platform for connecting me with new people, and the community aspect of it is really the most valuable. Don’t get too caught up in the numbers or potential for drama. In the grand scheme of things, it’s just a way to share and enjoy cute photos of dogs.

LYNDAL’S TIPS FOR HOW TO RUN A SUCCESSFUL DOG INSTAGRAM

If fabulous fashion and all things dog are your jam, @IGGYJOEY is a must-follow on Instagram! Not only does the sweet little star of the show, a darling Italian Greyhound called Iggy, frolic here, there and everywhere dressed to the nines, but together with her human counterpart, Lyndal, she explores all sorts of fun pet products!

Now a professional dog model who has appeared in countless campaigns, Iggy is proof that anything is possible with a little imagination and a lot of hard work! We sat down with her manager, Lyndal, to chat about her hot dos and dont’s for how to run a successful dog Instagram account!

What year did you start your Instagram account?
September 2014

What makes your Instagram standout on the platform?
I think Iggy Joey’s ability to “pose” really makes her stand out. She really looks down the lens of the camera and holds your gaze. Which makes taking photos of her easier than a lot of other dogs!

What advice do you have for making a pet Instagram unique?
I think you have to figure out why your pet is unique and accentuate that. Hone in on character traits or physical features that really make your pet special, then they will stand out. Iggy Joey’s personality very much leads her Instagram persona!

Photography is very important for such a visual platform. What photography advice would you give a pet parent just starting out on Instagram?
You don’t need an amazing camera. Phone photos easily hold up against DSLRS these days and capture moments in the moment. As long as your photos are clear and are cute, funny or relatable then post away. A beautiful professional photo of your dog in the woods, may not do as well as your dog covered in mud having a great time!

Talk to us about hashtags! What is the deal with those? Any tips for new users?
I always put hashtags in the 1st comment, to keep things legible in the caption :) I also have lists of hashtags for different things that I can copy paste easily. If I can think of a funny hashtag that compliments the caption I’ll put that in with the caption!

How do you keep Instagram life fun for your pet?
TREATS! We do very quick photoshoots with lots of treats. I also try to go to different locations and meet other pups so it never feels like work.
What advice do you have for partnering with brands on your feed?
Be authentic. Don’t partner with someone just because they offer you something free or pay you! There’s nothing more exciting that when a brand you really love reaches out to you and you can work together. By taking the first opportunity offered to you, you might miss out on something you are really passionate about!

What are two mistakes you wish you could tell your younger self to avoid on Instagram?
Just one: When I first started I followed everyone and everything! I think I was following 5000 people in the first year. Which made it impossible to actually have a community and interact with people/pets who’s accounts I enjoyed. It took me years to get that number down to just people I actually want to follow!

How do you remain inspired when creating content for your Instagram?
I follow accounts that make me smile or inspire me. I also watch movies or look for quotes on the Internet that make me think of Iggy Joey. One thing I’ve learnt is that if I’m posting just for the sake of posting – the post likely won’t do well. Where as when I’m inspired it will do well.

Is there anything else you’d like to add about your Instagram adventures to date?
Having a pet Instagram changed my life and opened up a world of opportunities. But it’s also a lot of work! I love Iggy Joey and I love our life together. If you ever see us out and about please come say hi :)

TIFFANY LITTLE’S TIPS FOR HOW TO RUN A SUCCESSFUL DOG INSTAGRAM

Looking for a laugh and a dash of cuteness on the regular? Then look no further because @WALTER_CHESTNUT_III has it covered! This darling account showcases the colourful antics of a busy dog life.

From epic dog naps, to grumpy faces, to running around the city and more, this account beautifully captures a day-in-the-life of an adorable pup duo who love to entertain! We sat down with proud dog mama and account manager, Tiffany, to dish on her Instagram philosophy and her personal tips for how to run a successful dog Instagram account!

What year did you start your Instagram account?
2018

What makes your Instagram standout on the platform?
Walter and Norm are always up to something so it’s easy to capture interesting shots. But I try to write with my sense of humour too — a little strange and off side.

What advice do you have for how to run a successful dog Instagram account?
Use your own voice when writing! I have a strange sense of humour, as I mentions, so I like Walter and Norm to have the same. Also, use quality images. No matter how funny or interesting you are low-quality pictures equals very little growth. I love funny posed pictures personally, but I’ve noticed people like a blend of live action, every day shots, videos and posed, so switch things up all the time! And lastly, if something isn’t working and you aren’t growing — change it up and follow your own creative spin.

Photography is very important for such a visual platform. What photography advice would you give a pet parent just starting out on Instagram?
I would say use bright, clear images and play with fun angles. This is a creative outlet, so enjoy it! I love the pout of my dogs so I try to get images that highlight their grumpy pout. Find what makes your dog unique and use it to your advantage.

Talk to us about hashtags! What is the deal with those? Any tips for new users?
I Googled this in the beginning and saved all the most popular ones. That’s great and all, but using hashtags that attract smaller groups seems to work better, so use both! For example, I have two Brussels Griffons, so instead of using just #dog, I may also use #brusselsgriffons. There is a much better chance of someone seeing your image with 10,000 – 100,000 followers vs 1,000,000 followers.

How do you keep Instagram life fun for your pet?
They love treats so pictures equal treats! If my husband pulls out the camera my dogs get ‘pose ready’ on their own now, because they know it means they are about to get treats! Also, if they aren’t feeling having their picture taken we do not force it. I take my camera when we do anything, but I snap most photos as they just being dogs. So most of the time they don’t even notice unless it’s a rare staged shot. This is just for fun, so we keep it fun for them!

What advice do you have for partnering with brands on your feed?
We do this for enjoyment to brighten people’s days, like Walter and Norm brighten ours.

What are two mistakes you wish you could tell your younger self to avoid on Instagram?
One — don’t let the internet trolls get to you. They are just angry people hiding behind a screen.
Two — don’t watch the numbers of unfollowers. Some accounts are spam and some people only follow to see if you follow back. This isn’t something to take personally.

How do you remain inspired when creating content for your Instagram?
I try to put myself in the dogs shoes when I write. I use expressions, situations and outfits to decide what I write about. It doesn’t have to be complicated. If Walter looks pouty, I write what he’s mad about.

Is there anything else you’d like to add about your Instagram adventures to date?
I would just add be sure to communicate with your dogs followers. They are all important to your account’s success and so they should be responded to and appreciated. Also, just be good to your dog. Instagram is great, but being a good dog mom is my main goal!

Whether looking to start a side hustle or simply craving a new dog-friendly activity, learning how to run a successful dog Instagram account can be a fun way to connect with fellow dog lovers, document your dog’s life and have some fun! How to make Instagram pet successful? 8 Rules for WikiPet.

ru Success

Animal photos are undeniably as popular on Instagram right now as food, fashion, sports, and travel. Pet accounts now have thousands and hundreds of thousands of followers. Millions of people are scrolling through their feeds looking for videos and photos of touching animals to satisfy their craving for cuteness.

Therefore, if you are a happy owner of a furry pet and want to share the moments of life with your four-legged friend, our advice is for you.

1. Tell the story

Tell your guests and future followers about your pet's story. How did you get the animal, was it adopted from a shelter, or is it a rare breed. Maybe your pet has an interesting fate or there are some features, unusual abilities, oddities of character. What makes it different from others? Tell us about it in one sentence, because that's how much fits in the Instagram profile header. Master storytelling as the most important tool for engaging your audience. This skill will be very useful for witty captions under posts.

2. Post only high-quality photos

If you have already created an account and shared your pet's story, it's time to fill your page with photos. Now Instagram has entered the era of quality content. People love clean, beautiful, bright feeds, so we strongly recommend that you honestly evaluate the quality of your photos so that only the best ones get into the feed. Photos must be original, clean and aesthetically pleasing. Try to take photos in natural light, look for a beautiful background that is not overloaded with unnecessary details, use special programs for processing photos before posting them, the best of the free ones: Snapseed, VSCO, PicsArt. Try to take mostly horizontal shots (this applies to both photos and videos)

3. Maintain a consistent style

A consistent feed is another important tool for achieving popularity. Try different filters, photo placement/sequencing principles. Be inspired by other accounts of your subject, but do not try to repeat them exactly. The same style cannot suit everyone. We advise you to think about the character of your pet, evaluate its color and other external features in order to determine the brightness, color scheme, heat balance, etc. that is right for you. for settings when processing photos. It may take you a lot of time, but this is a necessary condition for creating a truly high-quality account, with a large number of subscribers.

subscribers. Do your own research. Which tags are most relevant to your pet? This will help you attract new audiences and get into established communities. Use both very popular tags, such as #photocats, and tags with a narrower audience of #rooftop cat. Try to include tags in English, and also come up with your own tags with which you will sign each photo, which will make it easy to find you. But be careful! It’s also not worth overloading the post with tags, the Instagram robot doesn’t like this. The stagram.com service will help you

5. Keep in touch with your audience

To maintain a constant high level of engagement, you need to post at least once a day, and preferably two - in the morning and in the evening. The best time to post photos is up to you to figure out on your own. Usually, it is morning and early evening. Don't forget to also like and comment on the posts of your followers and those you follow. Instagram is a social network, so to be popular on it, you just need to be socially active. Pay attention to spelling and punctuation, be polite and friendly.

6. Get inspired and fantasize

No matter how cute, touching and funny your pet is, the same pose in the same location or very similar shots quickly become boring. Look around. Maybe on your usual walking route you come across interesting places: beautiful walls, cozy courtyards or a “dog friendly” cafe where you can take photos that have not yet been included in your photo stream. Or maybe your furry friend knows how to ride a skateboard or likes to dress up? This can also be an occasion for beautiful shots.

Collect props that look good in photos and set up a separate Pinterest board to post ideas that inspire your creativity.

7. Plan

Observing your pet, taking photos and editing, and keeping in touch with your audience can take a lot of time. In addition, you are unlikely to want to give up your usual activities for the sake of an extra hour on Instagram. Therefore, we strongly advise you to install a special scheduler application on your phone, which will allow you to upload and caption several photos at once, in order to guarantee you regular posts with the desired frequency without your participation.

Application in the Apple Store

8. Have fun with the process!

The biggest plus in your decision to keep your pet account is the fact that you will spend more time together! To catch interesting moments, emotions and manifestations of an animal, you will need to observe it more from afar or involve it in the game more often, and this will invariably bring joy to both. Just remember to always have your camera ready.

A step-by-step plan for launching a pet profile

Our instructions will help you think through the creation of the page and avoid common mistakes.

Analyze a niche

Animal blogs are not new to Instagram. There are accounts of dogs, cats, parrots, hedgehogs, foxes and even hippos.

We recommend that you analyze competitors and find out which topics are the most common, and which niche is free (your favorite can just occupy it). Pay attention to what page owners write about in their posts: what formats they use, what content is most often in the TOP.

The information you receive will help you understand in which direction you should move.

Come up with your own idea

Each animal is unique in its own way. Take a closer look at your four-legged friend and try to determine its zest. Unlike people, animals do not know how to pretend, so you have to adapt to their habits and character.

How to make your pet an Instagram star? Create a winning image!

  • External beauty . The hallmark of a pet is often visual appeal. If you manage to convey the charm through photos and videos, then he is guaranteed popularity.
  • Uncommon . This may be a natural anomaly or an external feature: a strange color, a displeased expression of the muzzle, strabismus. The behavior of the pet may also be unusual. For example, a dog barks strangely, a cat is not afraid of water or likes atypical food.

  • Touching story . In social networks, abandoned/wounded animals that miraculously escaped death often become popular. If you snatched your pet from the hands of flayers or picked it up from the street, immediately create an Instagram account and tell its story to the public. In the future, focus on a happy salvation, draw a parallel how good it is now and how everything could have ended sadly.
  • Training . Try to teach your pet different tricks: walk on its hind legs, jump through a ring, “sing” a song.
  • Non-pet animal . An Instagram celebrity can be a python, a fox or a squirrel. In this case, delight subscribers not only with visual content with the animal, but also with posts about everyday life and the complexities of its content.

  • Creativity . You can create interesting habits for your pet on your own. If you love to cook, create a cook animal profile. A pet can also "become" a psychologist, a jeweler, an artist, and a representative of other professions.
  • Travel . A great option for those who travel a lot is to take your pet with you on trips and take pictures / videos with the sights in the background. Post cheerful photos from different cities and countries, add many locations to your feed, and don't forget to share notes and tips.
  • Trending . Another idea is to create a four-legged mod account. Let your pet write reviews on new cosmetics, test beauty life hacks. Don't forget about dressing up. By capturing an animal in interesting clothes and accessories, you will definitely collect a lot of likes. By the way, this will give you the opportunity to earn on unobtrusive advertising integration in the future.

  • Emotions . If your pet clearly expresses sadness / joy, be sure to focus the attention of the audience on this. You can, for example, make touching videos with him, funny selfies, or film the animal's reaction to various life situations.

Choose a style

The audience is primarily attracted to the visual. Having decided on the idea of an account and the image of a pet, choose a priority page design option. An Instagram blog can be black and white, muted or bright. Try to stick to a single style with filters, frame composition and color accents. To learn how to do this, as well as how to create an attractive visual without a designer, read here.

Among other things, you need to consider how you communicate with your audience. Decide whether you will call subscribers “you”, joke or give out serious content. If you decide to blog on behalf of your pet, take his character as a basis. The tone of posts and response comments can be whimsical, kind, sad, or cheerful.

Create Original Content

To generate cool posts, you need to find quality equipment (camera, tripod, lights, lavalier microphone) and props. Carefully consider the location of the shooting: shoot your pet only in an attractive, clean location. Do not forget to prepare the "blogger" himself - your pet must be healthy and well-groomed. Therefore, visit the groomer and veterinarian regularly.

Tips for taking good photos:

  • Show your animal at its best . Like any model, your pet has a “working side”. Determine a good angle and try to photograph that way most often. Make sure that the proportions of the body and muzzle of the animal are not distorted in the photographs - for this, do not shoot it from the height of your height. The camera lens must be clearly level with the pet.

  • Be patient . A great picture may not be the first or even the hundredth time. Catch good moments, and even better, go through an online training in photography. While you are gaining knowledge and experience, order shooting from an animal photographer - this way you will receive not only new content for Instagram, but also a good example of a professional working with an animal.
  • Keep content in reserve . Please note that you will have to post at least one post and several stories per day. This means that you should prepare photos and short videos in advance to avoid downtime. You should always have content ready one to two weeks in advance.

  • Find helper . The assistant will help to attract the attention of your ward with a toy or a treat while you take a picture of him. If you yourself do not mind getting into the frame, play or train a pet - let an assistant shoot you.

With interesting high quality content, your blog will quickly attract the first viewers. In addition to copyright materials, add relevant hashtags to promote your account, use mass following, mutual PR and targeting.

Monetizing a pet account

Your mentee's blog is closest to the category of influencers with their own audience of a certain type. The methods of earning are similar.

Advertising publications

After you gain a large base of subscribers, advertisers will pay attention to your account. Be selective: promote only quality products that you and your pet like. It can be premium pet food, expensive textiles or cutting-edge gadgets - it all depends on the features of the blog.

Your task is to fit the advertisement into the feed as organically as possible. This way you will benefit advertisers and not alienate your followers.

Important: 5 schemes for selling Instagram posts

Cameo

Cameo is an episodic role of a famous person (in our case, an animal). Your four-legged friend can become an invited guest of someone else's live broadcast or promotional video. You can also record to order congratulations on your birthday and other holidays.

Merch

This category includes various items with a "quote" or a portrait of a publicized pet. Usually these are mugs, stickers, t-shirts, calendars.

When developing your merchandise idea, consider your pet's characteristics. If he is a glutton, sell branded large bowls for food, if he is a dormouse, pajamas and sleep masks. Fans of your four-legged star will surely want such goods for themselves. And you can sell them directly through Instagram.
