13 Easy Tips to Give Your Instagram Feed a Makeover

Are you looking for a few quick and easy ways to transform your brand’s Instagram feed? There are tons of small tweaks you can make that will significantly improve the look and feel of your Instagram profile. Keep reading to learn our favorite tips and tricks to upgrade your Instagram feed with an aesthetic makeover.

1. Switch Up Your Bio

You have 150 characters to let everyone know right away what your brand is all about.  If you haven’t updated your bio in awhile, it’s always a good practice to review your Instagram bio and see if there are any important updates that need to be made. Be sure to include a link to your website and don’t be afraid to include emojis for a playful and easy-to-read Instagram bio.

Instagram Expert Elise Darma (@elisedarma) successfully captures the following in her Instagram bio:

  • What her business is all about
  • What value she offers
  • What services she’s currently offering
  • Where her audience could go to purchase those services

2. Create a Mood Board

Before you get started giving your brand’s Instagram a makeover, it’s a good idea to create a mood board for what you would like your Instagram feed to look like. Do you want your feed to look light and airy? Or bright and bold? We recommend checking out different Instagram feeds and saving some of their posts to help you get inspired as you create an Instagram mood board.

3. Set Color Rules

If you aren’t already sticking to a color palette on Instagram, this trick will quickly transform your Instagram feed. Instagram is such a visual platform and the “look” of your profile really matters. Help bring your branding to life by utilizing your brand’s colors and sticking to a consistent color palette for all of your posts. For example, if your branding uses a lot of greens and blues, you might want to avoid posting anything with reds or yellows to help you create a more cohesive and aesthetically-pleasing Instagram feed.

Our Instagram feed (@boosted_social) features our branded color scheme:

4. Use The Same Filters or Presets

While we are talking about consistent color palettes, a great tip to give your brand’s Instagram a beautiful makeover is to always use the same 1-3 filters on every single photo you post. You can simply pick a filter on Instagram or in any free photo editing app that compliments your color palette. You can even buy a set of Lightroom presets created by your favorite influencers. Learn more about what a preset is here.

5. Stick to Font Rules

If you are posting custom-made graphics it’s important to always use the same fonts. If you are creating graphics using the fonts included with pre-made templates, your feed will quickly look cluttered. Instead, use the same 2-3 fonts in every graphic and follow some rules about how you use the fonts. For example, some fonts might always be capitalized or only used for quotes. Click here for a beginner’s guide on typography.

6. Take ‘Live’ Photos

If you are using your iPhone to snap photos for your brand’s business, we recommend using the ‘Live’ setting. This way, even if you don’t get the perfect shot you wanted, you can easily edit the ‘key photo’ so you can always get the perfect moment. Pro Tip: You can even upload a live photo to your Instagram story and turn it into a boomerang by holding the photo!

7. Make Grid ‘Rules’

Once you’ve created some guidelines about the colors and photos you’ll be posting, you can start to plan out how your Instagram profile will look by creating grid layout rules. For example, maybe you will mix up your posts by posting a photo and a quote graphic every other post. Following grid rules like this is the easiest way to quickly transform your Instagram feed and help create a more consistent look and feel.

Instagram Coach @shallwesocial has a clearly defined grid rule of alternating graphic images with photography, creating a cohesive, branded look:

8. Test Out Your Grid

Once you have an idea of what ‘rules’ you want to follow when deciding on content to post, you can test out what your Instagram feed will look like before you actually post. Test out your grid by using planning apps to see how a post would look on your feed before you post it. Testing out your posts will help prevent you from posting two photos that are too similar in color or content back to back.

9. Research New Hashtags

Did you know it’s important to not use the same hashtags on every single post? It can seem like a lot of work to always research and test out new hashtags but this is a great way to ensure your Instagram posts will perform better and help you connect with new audiences. Check out our guide here for insights on how to build an effective Instagram hashtag strategy.

 10. Post Some Videos

Instagram isn’t just for beautiful photos! Videos can be more engaging and are a great way to break up the photos in your Instagram feed.   If you don’t want to use videos on your feed, you can post videos to your Instagram Stories. You can use an app like Boosted to create standout video content for both your feed and/or Stories.

 11. Organize Your Highlights

Once you’ve started posting on Instagram Stories, you will definitely want to save all of that great content for your followers to access. The Highlights feature allows you to select collections of Stories to display on your profile page and reuse content you’ve posted. Create and organize several highlights on your Instagram profile to save your best Instagram stories, answer FAQ’s, show new products and more.

12. Create New Highlight Icons

While we are talking about highlights… Did you know you can customize the look and feel of your highlights too? This is a great way to makeover your Instagram feed and bring your branding to life right away. You can easily create new icons using your brand fonts or colors to create consistent and ‘on-brand’ highlight cover images.

13. Find New Accounts to Follow

The best way to find inspiration when making over your brand’s Instagram feed is to find some beautiful accounts to follow to help you see what is working for other brands or influencers. Follow accounts that inspire you with their color palettes, content, photography style and more. Here are 10 social media marketing accounts to start following for inspiration.

We hope that these quick and easy suggestions will help you give your brand’s Instagram a stunning makeover. Don’t forget to have fun with it! There can be a lot of ‘rules’ when it comes to creating an aesthetic Instagram feed but Instagram is a social media platform and it should still be fun to post. If you are looking to give your brand’s Instagram a makeover, test out some of these strategies and see which ones work best for you.

10 Ways To Improve Your Instagram

It’s safe to say that Instagram has become a
major player in social media. Having a beautiful, engaging and unique Instagram account can enhance your business and can create amazing opportunities. So how do you make your Instagram stand out among the crowd? It’s not an easy feat, but today, Taylor is sharing 10 tips that have worked for her and for our team here at Glitter Guide.

1. Choose A Style.

One thing that developed for me over the last few years is creating more of a style to my Instagram feed. Before this, I was simply posting any picture I took that I liked. I wasn’t really thinking about the entire look and feel of my grid. For some people, this isn’t something they care about—especially because most people are only looking at your individual image as it appears in their feed. However, if you’re portraying a brand, whether it’s for yourself or a business, it’s important to think about the overall vibe you want to create with your Instagram grid.

Some people take this very seriously and only post specific photos that are their style or work in their grid (think colors, angles, mood). I fall into it loosely. I want to have my feed feel and look cohesive and beautiful, but I don’t like to get too strict on myself where it stops me from just being authentic and spontaneous. I like to edit with only a handful of filters (more on that later). I like muted colors that feel soft and light. I also like to have a mix of promotional things, but also things that are personal and that I like.

2. Have Lots To Choose From.

One thing that I’ve learned over the past few years of using Instagram is that having a lot of photos to choose from of one thing can be so helpful. It can be a tad annoying when you’re out and about and quickly trying to snap things, but it pays off in the end. It allows you to see things from different angles and it gives you more options when playing with the image in your overall feed. I will take about 5 to 10 pictures of one thing that all look slightly different. Just remember to erase any that you never plan to use after or you will end up with that terribly annoying “storage is full” alert on your phone.

3. Edit Your Photos.

This is something that has become like an art form. Having a beautiful image is one thing, but editing it is what really makes the image POP! First you will need apps that can help you. My favorites are: Afterlight, VSCO and A Color Story. Here’s why:

Afterlight:
This is where I typically start. I like to use Afterlight for cropping, adding brightness, contrast and sometimes sharpening and playing with shadows. You can use the other apps for these things too, but I happen to like Afterlight the most for it. Once I do that, I will use the other two for more editing.

A Color Story:
I love A Color Story for the amazing color ranges it has for editing photos, and I am so stoked Glitter Guide was able to create our own custom collection of filters. Our collection of 14 filters are all very light, glowy and will give your photos a pastel effect (like you see in the photos in this post). We also have some that will give your photos a bright pink or orange glow, too. My favorite filters are the “EVELYN,” “CASSIDY” and “VALERIE.”

VSCO:
VSCO is also an amazing app for editing the color of your photos. I use its filters when one of the #glitterguidexacolorstory ones don’t work well on a photo of mine. I love “A4” and “A6.” I also love VSCO for planning out my photos in the grid. See below:

4. Plan Your Photos.

This is something I only started doing a year ago and it’s great if you’re looking to create a more curated grid. I blame my photographer friends for getting me addicted to planning out my next few photos—it’s an obsession. However, like I mentioned before, I am trying to allow myself to sometimes not be so picky about it so I can also still be real and genuine and not too artsy. I love that on some people’s feeds, but for my account, I like to have a mix. VSCO is great for uploading your photos and seeing them in a grid format. I use that for my personal feed. For Glitter Guide, we use PLANOLY, which is awesome. We can plan ahead, schedule, write our captions and see analytics for our account. It’s really great when you have a social media team and want to work together.

When planning out photos in your grid, look for what appeals to your eye. For me, that means never repeating the same style photo too close to one another. I also don’t want it to feel too busy. So if you have a picture of flowers, maybe you wait until it’s out of sight before you post another one. Or maybe it’s that the next one you pick looks very different from the other one and it won’t matter, but for me, this is something I strive for when possible. This can be tricky when you have to post something for work or really want to post something that is time sensitive. Instagram is still meant to be fun, so don’t sweat it too much. Just post it. You can always delete it later if you want.

5. Engagement Is Key.

If you’re looking to really grow your following, then engagement is critical. Especially now that the algorithm is in place. People want to feel a part of your community. They want to feel like they know you and have you acknowledge their voice. That means that when you can, you should reply to comments, like other people’s photos and comment on them. This will not only have you form a closer relationship with your followers, but it will also mean more of your photos will actually be seen by them. This is something I really struggle with. I want to be connected to my audience, but I don’t want to feel glued to my phone. So, it’s a work in progress for me.

Timing is also a big component now. There are ideal times for your specific audience for you to post things if you want more engagement on your photo. Again, this is something I do loosely because I don’t want to feel totally tied down by my account. However, if you’re a business or really striving for a larger, more engaged audience, then this is something you should pay attention to.

Call things to action with your audience. Ask them questions. Be involved. Have them comment with things or tag people. These can all help grow your engagement and audience.

6. Take Photos In The Camera App.

I don’t like snapping photos in the Instagram app or using Instagram filters (however, I’m sure they have vastly improved). I like to use the camera app on my phone. I also make sure that I get the very best lighting I can. Natural light is better for my preferred style—I never use the flash. It’s also great to remember to use the tools in the camera app, like focusing and adding or removing light from the shot by tapping on the photo.

7. Stay Consistent.

I think that posting consistently and around the same times is really helpful for improving your engagement. It can vary from person to person, but typically I think posting daily is important for staying in your audience’s view. That way they don’t have to check out your profile to see if you updated. I also think posting 1 to 3 times a day is ideal for personal brand and maybe more if you’re a brand that has a lot of content. Just make sure to keep them separated and not all at once. I like to do one in the morning, afternoon and evening. Sometimes, I will only get to one and that’s OK. Again, I’m trying to remain somewhat flexible.

8. Follow Content You Love.

I’m working on cleaning up my list of who I follow. It’s not a personal thing, it’s more the fact that it’s harder and harder to see photos from people I really want to see. So, it’s important to clean out my list to people’s pictures that really inspire me. It also helps drown out a lot of noise for me and makes Instagram more enjoyable.

9. Use Hashtags.

I have a love/hate relationship with hashtags, but they do really work. If done correctly, it helps to showcase your photos to specific audiences and it gives you the chance to get your photo featured by a larger Instagram account. This can help grow your base of followers. Some of Glitter Guide’s popular ones are: “#flashesofdelight” “#GGathome” “#GGLocalGems” and “#thatsonecoolride.

Hashtags also help people know if the photo was edited with something (#glitterguidexacolorstory), if it’s part of a group and also if it’s sponsored.

10. Don’t Follow Rules.

I know this makes no sense after I just listed a bunch of “rules” for you to follow, but ultimately Instagram is meant to be fun. If you turn it into a tool you’re simply using to gain followers from and only follow all these strict guidelines, it will lose its magic. I try to maintain a balance of using strategies and guidelines to improve and grow my account, but then also make sure to check in and see if I am being genuine, having fun and feeling inspired. In the end, those are the things that will really help improve your Instagram.

How to update Instagram to the latest version

The process for installing the latest Instagram updates is different for different operating systems. To update the app to the latest version, follow this step-by-step guide.

Android

On Android devices, the official Instagram app can be installed from the Google Play Store. This instruction was created specifically for updating the application from the Play Store and no other sources. We strongly do not recommend downloading the Instagram application from unverified sources on the Internet. It may contain viruses and cannot be updated.

To install the update of the official application:

  1. Check if the Play Store has sent a notification about the new version of Instagram.
  2. If there is a notification, then click on it.
  3. Otherwise, open the Google Play Store yourself.
  4. On the main page, click on the three bars on the left or swipe to the right. The menu will open.
  5. Select the My Apps & Games tab.
  6. On the Updates page, find the application you want. If it is not there, then you have already installed all the latest updates.
  7. Next, click "Update" and accept the user agreement.
  8. After the update, launch the application and check its performance and new features.

On iPhone

In the new version of IOS, Instagram is installed as follows:

  1. Launch the App Store.
  2. Click on your profile icon in the top right corner.
  3. In the menu that opens, scroll down to "Available Updates" and find Instagram.
  4. Click the Refresh button.

Why Instagram is not updating and what to do about it

Consider solving the problem with installing fresh application updates. It occurs for various reasons. Lack of memory, old OS or bugs in new versions of the app store. But first things first.

Reboot

The easiest and most effective way to solve a problem. Restart your gadget. This will reset the OS cache and also restart applications. This method can remove errors with the Play Store and App Store, as well as improve performance.

To reboot Android:

  1. Press the power button on your device. If it supports reboot, select the appropriate option.
  2. If not, after turning off, just turn on the gadget.

Another way:

  1. Open the phone cover.
  2. Remove the battery and wait a while.
  3. Reinsert the battery. Turn on the device.

To restart your iPhone:

  1. Press and hold the side button until the Power Off slider appears.
  2. Move the slider and then wait 30 seconds for the device to turn off.
  3. To turn the device back on, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

Updating the operating system

The second most effective method, after rebooting, is updating the OS. The latest versions of Instagram are “sharpened” for new versions of operating systems. Updating the system will also increase the performance and speed of your phone.

To update IOS:

  1. Charge your phone and turn on the Internet.
  2. Go to settings. Select Basic.
  3. Click on "Software Update" and then on "Download and Install".
  4. Do not forget to click "Install" again after downloading.

For Android:

  1. Open settings.
  2. Go to the "System" section.
  3. Click on "Software Update".
  4. Click Refresh.

Clearing memory

The application does not install or does not work properly due to insufficient memory on the device. You just need to free up space. Delete unnecessary files and applications. On iPhone:

  1. Open settings.
  2. Select General, iPhone Storage.
  3. Remove or upload files and applications.

Lack of internet connection is also a common cause of errors. Check if your data transfer or WI-FI connection is enabled.

Automatic application update

Installation of new Instagram patches can be automated. You won't manually update every app, but you'll always have the latest version of the software. To enable or disable automatic updates on Android:

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Click on the profile icon or on your photo in the lower right corner of the screen to go to your profile.
  3. Click on the three bars in the upper right corner of the screen, and then - "Settings".

  4. Go to Information and then Application Updates.
  5. Click next to Instagram Auto Update to turn automatic updates on or off.

Automatic update on iPhone:

  1. Open the "Settings" of the device.
  2. Scroll down and select "App Store".
  3. Drag the sliders to the right opposite: "Applications", "Automatic downloads". Turn on "Software Update" to get the latest OS versions and prevent errors.

New versions will be installed as soon as they become available. Please note that this method "eats" traffic.

How to find out what's changed in update

Instagram does not notify users about innovations in each version. The product is often updated and most often work with its optimization and "engine". They don't write about it.

However, major app updates are accompanied by developer comments about new features. They are available in the App Store and Play Store in the product description. Just click on the "Version History" button.

The developers describe in detail only major updates and the introduction of extensive features. The rest of the updates are described as templates, as shown in the screenshot.

Another way to find out about new products is Instagram stories marked “New”. They appear after updates that add significant tools. Stories teach and show how to use new masks, filters and effects.

You can find out what has changed on Instagram from the Internet. Enter a similar query into the search bar of your browser: "Instagram, latest update, what's new", "Instagram, latest features and news."

Look through the forums on this topic. Regular users of the application often write about what they noticed and give advice on how to use the new interface and features.

One of the popular forums about the platform is InstaForum

Here, you will find secrets, instructions and recommendations for working with Instagram.

How to go back to the old version of Instagram

After updating, the Instagram application may work with errors or not work at all. This situation is quite common, because the developers themselves sometimes make mistakes, due to which many people cannot get into their account at all. In this case, there is only one option - rollback to the old version.

Remember that to use even older versions of Instagram, you need a version of Android at least 5.0, and preferably 6.0 and higher.

On Android

To remove the update and roll back, you need to do the following:

  1. Open the smartphone settings and go to the "Applications" section.
  2. We find Instagram and go to the page with the program. At the bottom of the screen, select "Uninstall updates" and confirm the action.
  3. Before installing the old version of Instagram, you need to find the "Screen lock and security" item in the device settings.
  4. Allow app downloads from unverified sources.
  5. Next, go to the browser, in the search line we write "Instagram apk-file". We pass on one of the links issued by the search engine, and click "Download".
  6. An application downloaded from an unknown source may be missing updates, often pop up ads and spam. If the smartphone refuses to recognize the program, we recommend downloading it to your computer. Using USB, transfer to the phone, open the "File Installer" and activate the launch.

On iPhone

Installation is done through Pangu jailbreak (or equivalent), browser or iTunes. Although the third method may not work on updated operating systems, it is called the only official one. Therefore, let's figure out how to return the old Instagram, using iTunes as an example:

  • open the utility on the computer - log out of the account on the phone;
  • we turn off the connection to the network on the smartphone, and in parallel go to iTunes in the App Store;
  • in the search bar, enter "Instagram" and click "Install";
  • if a warning window pops up, we give our consent by clicking the "Yes" button;
  • waiting for the installation to complete.

Re-enter your profile on the phone, go to the App Store. After connecting, Instagram will roll back.

So, we have considered all possible ways to roll back to the old version of Instagram. Check for updates, find the best functionality for you. Good luck!
