How to Transfer Your WhatsApp Chat History From Android to iPhone

After a long wait, Meta this week announced the ability to transfer WhatsApp chat history, photos, videos, and voice messages from Android to iPhone while maintaining end-to-end encryption. The system uses Apple's Move to iOS app for Android phones, and can be initiated during the setup process for a new (or factory reset) ‌iPhone‌.

This article runs through the steps involved in transferring your WhatsApp chat history from an Android phone to an ‌iPhone‌. The much-requested migration feature transfers everything in your WhatsApp history including texts, voice notes, and media files to a new ‌iPhone‌.

Note that WhatsApp chat history migration is only supported on Android devices running Android 5.0 or later and iPhones running iOS 15.5 or later. Also, both the Android phone and the ‌iPhone‌ need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network when the migration takes place. The following steps guide you through the process.

Transfer WhatsApp Chats From Android to iPhone

  1. On your Android phone, download the Move to iOS app from the Google Play Store.
  2. Start the ‌iPhone‌ setup process of your new (or factory reset) ‌iPhone‌.
  3. When the Apps & Data setup screen appears, select Move data from Android.

  4. On your Android phone, open the Move to iOS app and follow the onscreen instructions.
  5. On your ‌iPhone‌, tap Continue when you see the Move from Android screen, then wait for a ten-digit or six-digit code to appear.

  6. Enter the code on your Android phone, select WhatsApp on the Transfer Data screen, then tap Start.
  7. Wait for your WhatsApp history and data to be prepared for migration. Once the process is complete, you will be signed out of WhatsApp on your Android device.
  8. Once your ‌iPhone‌ is fully setup, download WhatsApp from the App Store and sign into the service using the same phone number.

After following these steps, the WhatsApp chat history from your Android phone should appear on your new ‌iPhone‌.

Method #1. Transfer using a dedicated application

The dr.fone application allows you to transfer messages from WhatsApp between any gadgets. Here is how to send data from Android smartphone to iPhone using it.

  • Install and launch dr.fone on your computer, and then connect your Android smartphone and iPhone to your computer. From the main screen of the app, select Restore Chat App → WhatsApp → Transfer Messages from WhatsApp.
  • Once dr.fone detects your Android smartphone and iPhone, you will see the following screen.
  • Click "Transfer" to send WhatsApp messages from Android smartphone to iPhone.
  • Once the transfer is complete, you can view all available messages on iPhone.

Method #2. Transfer using email

This will only send one conversation at a time, so this method is only useful if you need to transfer not all messages, but from some contacts.

  • Open WhatsApp on your Android device, go to Settings and tap Chat Settings. Select "Send Chat via Email" from the drop-down list.
  • Select the WhatsApp conversation you want to transfer. A pop-up window will appear with a warning: "Attaching media will increase the size of the email." You can choose No Media or Attach Media.
  • Enter your email address and click Submit.
  • Sign in to your mailbox on iPhone. There you can view messages sent from WhatsApp, but you will not be able to synchronize them with your account in the messenger itself.

Method number 3. Transfer using backup

If the first two methods are not convenient for you, try transferring messages from WhatsApp using backup.

  • Back up your messages on your Android device. Once the process is complete, go to "Settings" and click on "Chat Settings". Select "Send Chat via Email" from the drop-down list that appears.
  • Delete WhatsApp from your Android device - this is important for the successful completion of the transfer.
  • Install WhatsApp on iPhone. Use your current phone number in it to activate an existing account on a new gadget. After that, you will see a pop-up window informing you that the message backup was found.
  • Click the Restore command. Your WhatsApp messages will be transferred from Android to iPhone. The data transfer process will take some time depending on the size of the backup.

Method number 4. Transfer using a special program

One such program is Backuptrans Android iPhone WhatsApp Transfer. It allows you to send backup copies of messages from your Android device to your computer and from your computer to your iPhone.
