How to Untag Yourself From an Instagram Post

Tagged in an Instagram post you don't want to appear in? Here's how to untag yourself.

Like other social media platforms, Instagram allows you to tag other users in the photos and videos you post. But what if you're tagged in pictures that you don't want?

With this feature also comes the ability for you to remove the tag from the post. Here's how you can untag yourself from posts on Instagram and choose which tagged posts show up on your profile.

How Do You Untag Yourself From an Instagram Post?

Sometimes your friend picks to post the best photo of them, which happens to be the worst photo of you. Meanwhile, some Instagram users tag others in photos as a way of inflating the reach of the post—essentially using the tag feature to spam others.

If you're tagged in a post you no longer want to have your username appear on, here is how you can untag yourself:

  1. Navigate to the post you would like to untag yourself from.
  2. Tap on the post once, so that the tags appear on the post.
  3. Tap your username.
  4. Tap Remove Me From Post.

This will remove your tag from the photo altogether. This also removes the ability for people to navigate directly to your account from the post.

How to Hide a Tagged Post From Your Instagram Profile

If you would still like people to be able to navigate to your account from a tagged post, but you don't want that post showing up in your own tagged photos section on your profile, here is how you can hide a post from your profile.

  1. Navigate to the post you would like to hide from your profile.
  2. Tap on the post once, to reveal the tags on the post.
  3. Tap your username.
  4. Tap Hide From My Profile.

Once you have completed these steps, the post will no longer appear on your profile under tagged posts. However, your account will still be tagged on the post, allowing other Instagram users to find your account.

Why Can't My Friends See All the Posts I'm Tagged In?

You may have noticed that when one of your friends navigates to your tagged posts on your profile from their account, a few of your tagged posts are missing. This would be due to some of your tagged posts coming from private accounts.

Private Instagram accounts can still tag others the same way everyone else can, but that tagged post is only going to be visible for those who personally follow that private account.

We also have a guide on how you can make your Instagram account more private if you'd like to limit who can see your posts.

How to Manually Approve Each Post You're Tagged In

If you would like for no tagged posts to appear on your profile until after you have manually approved them, you can change your settings to do so.

Simply follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to your Instagram profile.
  2. Tap the three lines in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap Settings.

  4. Tap Privacy.
  5. Tap Posts.
  6. Tap Manually Approve Tags.
  7. Switch your tag controls to On.

Now whenever you get tagged in a post, the post will not automatically appear in your tagged posts on your profile. Instead, you will have to manually approve it by clicking on your own tag.

Will the Other Instagram Account Be Notified if You Untag Yourself?

The person who posted the photo you are untagging yourself from will not be notified when you do so. They will also not get notified if you choose to hide the post from your profile.

However, completely removing your tag from the photo could be something they notice eventually on their own.

You should also note that post tags and collaborations are different. A tagged post is used for tagging other accounts who appear in a post, while a collaboration can be used for more project-oriented things that you have worked on together, and share ownership of.

A tagged Instagram post simply links another Instagram account within the post. An Instagram Collaboration, however, creates a post for both accounts that are collaborating. This means that instead of having one person post and the other person be tagged, both accounts become authors of the post.

Posting an Instagram collaboration will post to both your feed, and once your collaborator accepts, it will also appear on their feed as a regular post.

Appear Only in the Posts You Want

Keeping track of the posts you have been tagged in can help you catch the photos you don't particularly want showing up on your own profile. You can act as your own quality control when it comes to what you get tagged in on Instagram.

And if you miss a tag, you can always remove it at a later date or adjust your settings so that you can't be tagged without approval.

How To Untag Yourself on Instagram

You get a notification that a friend has tagged you in a photo on Instagram, you open it, and . . . your eyes are closed in the picture. We’ve all been tagged in our fair share of bad pictures – the ones you would never post, but your friend looks good so they share it anyway.

If you’ve been tagged in an unflattering picture or tagged in something inappropriate that you don’t want tied to you online, removing a tag on Instagram is simple.

How To Untag Yourself

Thankfully, Instagram allows you to remove a tag from another person’s post. To remove a tag of yourself on someone else’s post, follow these simple steps.

      1. Tap the photo or video that you’ve been tagged in.
      2. Tap your name when the tag appears.
      3. Tap “Remove Me From Post” (iPhone) or “Remove Tag” (Android)
      4. Confirm by tapping “Remove” (iPhone) or “Yes I’m Sure” (Android).

Hide Photo From Profile

Another option instead of untagging yourself is to hide the photo from your profile. With this option, you are still tagged in the photo, but it won’t appear on your profile under tagged photos. If you don’t feel strongly enough to remove the tag altogether, hide the photo by following these instructions:

      1. Tap the photo or video that you’ve been tagged in.
      2. Tap your name when the tag appears.
      3. Tap “Hide from My Profile”.

How To Untag Someone on Instagram

If you posted a photo and want to remove a tag for someone else, doing so is easy. When you tag someone on Instagram, you can remove or edit the tag immediately, as well as move the location of the tag on the photo itself. To go back later and remove or edit a tag on your own photo, do the following:

      1. On the tagged photo, click the three dots in the top right corner.
      2. Tap “Edit”.
      3. In the bottom left corner, click the icon that says “X People” (X being the number of people tagged).
      4. Tap the tag that you want to remove and then tap the “X” button that appears next to their name.
      5. Tap “Done” to save the tag changes and “Done” again to finish editing.

How To Delete Pictures on Instagram

If removing the tag isn’t enough, the next step is to delete the whole picture.

For pictures that you posted, deleting the post is simple. Simply press the three dots at the top right corner of the picture and press “Delete” to get rid of a post you regret sharing.

Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to delete a post shared on someone else’s account. While Instagram gives users control over what posts they are tagged in and what appears on their profile, you cannot control what images other people post. There is no direct way for you to delete a post shared on someone else’s account, even if you are in the photo or video.

If you still really need that post gone, you have two options:

Ask! If the photo is that upsetting to you, and assuming it was a friend who tagged you, simply ask them to delete the post. They might not be happy to remove a post that they wanted to share, and they may say no, but it doesn’t hurt to try.

Report the photo. If you’ve exhausted your other option and you’re committed to getting that post removed, you can try reporting the photo. Instagram is often slow to respond to reports, and they very likely won’t take action if you only want it removed because it’s unflattering. If you truly want the post deleted, it’s still worth a shot.

To report a photo, click the three dots at the top right corner of the image and tap “Report Photo”. A pop-up menu will make you choose between “It’s Spam” and “It’s Inappropriate” before taking you to a page with more options to report the issue with the image.

View Tagged Photos on Instagram

For those of you reading and wondering if there are any unsavory photos you should go back and check on, viewing your tagged photos is simple. To check out your tagged photos, go to your profile and tap the

icon.

You can also view other users’ tagged photos by clicking the same button on their profile.

Set Instagram Tagging Permissions

To save you from removing future tags, you can adjust your tagging permissions in your Instagram settings. There are two settings for tagging on Instagram: “Add Automatically” and “Add Manually”. Most accounts are set to “Add Automatically” by default. This allows people to tag you in photos and lets the photos appear automatically on your profile.

The “Add Manually” option sends you a notification when you’ve been tagged and allows you to approve or disapprove it before it appears on your profile.

To adjust your tagging permissions, follow these steps:

      1. On your profile, click the three horizontal lines at the top right corner.
      2. Tap the Settings Gear at the bottom of the menu.
      3. Tap “Privacy and Security” > “Photos and Videos of You”
      4. Switch the toggle for “Add Automatically” on or off, depending on your preference.

On this same screen, you can click “Hide Photos and Videos”, which will take you to a screen of all your tagged images. Here, you can choose which ones you want to hide in bulk.

There are several ways to remove a mark on Instagram from a photo: make a profile private click on the username and remove the tag. It is also possible to mention the user through comments or refuse any marks on the social network, prohibiting them for your profile.
