If you decide to take a break from social media networks, you might want to know how to remove your Instagram account from the app. Bear in mind that this is different than deleting your Instagram account. You are essentially removing it from your phone or tablet. Luckily, Instagram removal is a relatively straightforward process.

This article provides you with a detailed, step-by-step guide on removing your Instagram account from your iPhone or Android Instagram app.

How to Remove an Instagram Account from the iPhone App

Removing an account from the Instagram app on iPhone is simple and only takes a few steps. Instagram allows you to have up to five accounts and switch among them without logging out. You can easily remove one of the accounts from the phone at any time.

As previously mentioned, It’s important to note that removing an Instagram account isn’t the same as deleting it. It won’t show up on your phone anymore when you remove it, but you can still log back in anytime you want. Also, other people can still see your account once you remove it from your profile, mainly because the account is still active.

If you have one or more Instagram accounts on your iPhone and you want to remove one, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the “Instagram” app.
  2. Make sure you’re currently on the account that you want to log out of.
  3. Tap your “profile” icon in the bottom-right corner.
  4. Tap the “hamburger” icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
  5. Select “Settings.”
  6. Choose “Log Out.”
  7. Select “Log Out” again to confirm.
  8. Even though you’ve logged out of your account, it will be there the next time you open the app again. This occurs due to enabled saved login information, which you need to remove as well. Open the Instagram app on your iPhone.
  9. Ensure you’re currently in the account you want to remove.
  10. Tap the “profile icon” in the bottom-right corner, not the big one towards the top.
  11. Select the “hamburger icon” in the top-right corner.
  12. Choose “Settings.”
  13. Tap on “Security.”
  14. Choose “Saved Login Info.”
  15. Move the “Saved Login Info” slider button to turn it off.

By following the steps listed above, you ensure that Instagram doesn’t remember the account info on your device. Now, you can repeat the steps mentioned above to log out.

As previously mentioned, your Instagram account is now removed from your device but remains an active account. Therefore, you can log back in anytime by entering your username and password again. Regardless, people can still search for your Instagram profile and view it when you delete it from your smartphone because you still have the account.

How to Remove an Instagram Account from the Android App

If you have one or more Instagram accounts on your Android Instagram app and you want to remove one, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the “Instagram” app.
  2. Confirm that you’re currently on the account that you want to log out of.
  3. Tap your “profile icon” in the bottom-right corner.
  4. Tap the “hamburger icon” at the top-right corner.
  5. Choose “Settings” and then select “Log Out.”
  6. Confirm the action by tapping on “Log Out.”
  7. Even though you logged out from one of your accounts, it still appears on your Instagram. This is due to enabled saved login information. To remove the account from your Instagram app (not your account), launch the app.
  8. Check if you’re currently in the account you want to remove.
  9. Tap the “profile icon” at the bottom-right corner, not the profile icon towards the top.
  10. Tap the “hamburger icon” (three horizontal lines) at the top-right corner.
  11. Choose “Settings.”
  12. Select “Security.”
  13. Tap on “Saved Login Info.”
  14. Move the “Saved Login Info” slider to turn it off.
  15. Confirm the action to remove your account on your Instagram app by selecting “Remove.”

How to Temporarily Disable an Instagram Account

If you want more than just removing an Instagram account from your smartphone app, you can take a temporary break from Instagram altogether by disabling it. This action disables your Instagram account entirely, which means it will hide your profile, photos, comments, likes, etc. until you log back in on any device.

To temporarily disable your Instagram account, you have to log in using a computer or a mobile browser.

  1. Open a browser on your smartphone or PC and head to the Instagram login page. Log into the account you want disabled. If already logged into a different account, sign out and sign into the correct one.
  2. Tap/click on your “profile icon” in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose “Profile” from the list of options.
  4. Tap/click on “Edit Profile” next to your username.
  5. Scroll down and click or tap on “Temporarily disable my account” in the bottom-right corner.
  6. Instagram will ask you what the reason is for disabling your account. Choose an option from the drop-down list.
  7. Retype your password.
  8. Tap or click on “Temporarily disable my account.”

Now, your existing Instagram account (not a profile on your phone) is disabled. Nobody can view your profile, posts, comments, likes, or anything related to your Instagram account until you enable it again by logging in from any device.

If for some reason you want to delete your Instagram account temporarily or permanently, use our detailed instructions and choose the most convenient way for you.

Why delete an Instagram account

The reasons for deleting an Instagram profile can be very different.

Some users notice that they devote too much time to maintaining their Instagram account to the detriment of work and personal affairs. Yes, and real communication fades into the background, it is replaced by virtual. nine0003

And scientists from the University of British Columbia say that users' own lives are beginning to seem insufficiently bright and interesting compared to how other people show their lives on Instagram.

Finally, not everyone wants their photos and stories to be in the public domain.

If you also no longer want to show your life, publications already made can be archived. In this case, no one will see them except you. For this you need:

How to temporarily block an account

Deleting an account is an irreversible process, so added photos, videos, galleries and stories, as well as the account itself, will be permanently deleted. To save your account and continue using it later, temporarily block your account. This procedure can be carried out only once a week. nine0003

In a browser, open the authorization page https://www.instagram.com/accounts/login/ and sign in to your account. Then click on the user icon and click on the "Edit Profile" button. Scroll down and select Temporarily disable my account.

Specify the reason why you chose to block your account by selecting an option from the list. After that, re-enter the password, click "Temporarily block the account" and confirm the blocking. nine0003

Before deleting an account

A temporarily blocked account is restored in a couple of clicks. Moreover, at a time when the profile is not active, account data continues to be stored on Instagram servers. But when you delete your account, this data will be erased. And if the materials uploaded to the profile were saved on the device to the Instagram folder, as described later in the article, then you will no longer be able to view comments on posts or read messages received in Direct. nine0003

Especially for users who want to save all information from the profile, including added stories, photos and videos, saved posts, likes, comments, search history and more, Instagram developers have created a special feature.

If you are not interested in downloading account data and you want to quickly move on to deleting your profile, scroll to the next paragraph of this instruction. For the rest: go to the application, click on the user icon in the lower right corner, and then you will be taken to the profile. Now click on the "Menu" button and select "Settings". nine0003

Open the "Security" section and click on the "Download data" item.

In the "Email address" field, you can leave the email address associated with the account or enter another one. Click Request File, enter your account password, and click Next.

A message will appear that the file has been requested. It can take up to 48 hours to collect data and send an email with a download link, but usually the email arrives within 10 minutes. If there is no message for a long time, check your Spam folder. You can create such requests no more than once every four days. nine0003

The email you receive will contain a link to download the file. Follow it (the page will open in the browser), if necessary, log in. Then click "Download data" already on the site page.

The download of the archive will start. Its size depends on the number of correspondence, published publications and stories. Therefore, for users who regularly post on Instagram, the archive size can exceed several gigabytes, and its download can take a long time. nine0003

Extract the contents of the archive. Media files are stored in separate folders: "direct", "photos", "profile", "stories", "videos". And the correspondence, comments left, likes, search history and settings are recorded in text format in files with the JSON extension. To open the latter, use a text editor such as Notepad++.

How to permanently delete an Instagram account

In a browser on your computer or phone, go to https://instagram.com/accounts/remove/request/permanent/ and log in if you haven't done so before. Select the reason why you want to delete your account from the drop-down menu. Enter the password again, click the "Permanently delete my account" button and confirm that you are sure. nine0003

How to uninstall the Instagram application

Since the account is deactivated, the Instagram application is no longer needed and can be safely deleted.

On pure Android

Go to the application menu or to the desktop if there is no menu in the launcher, and drag the Instagram icon to the trash. To confirm the deletion, select "OK" in the pop-up window.

For Samsung, Huawei and Honor

Hold your finger on the Instagram app icon for a few seconds and a menu with available options will open. Click on the "Delete" item and confirm the action by selecting "OK" in the dialog box that appears. nine0003

For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Hold your finger on the Instagram icon until the icons begin to shake. Click on the cross in the upper left corner of the icon and select "Delete". Finally, press the Home or Done button if you have one of these models: iPhone X, XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro, or 11 Pro Max.

How to restore a temporarily blocked account

To activate a frozen account, just log into it through the application or log in to the Instagram website. If you try to log in shortly after your account has been deactivated, you will be notified that your account has not yet been locked out. Then try again in a couple of hours. nine0003

Where are profile photos stored? It appears in the Gallery or Google Photos and is located in the internal memory in the "Pictures" directory. After deleting your account, the downloaded media files will remain there.

The Instagram client for iOS cannot disable saving photos and videos added to the profile, so they are uploaded to the Camera Roll in the "Instagram" folder by default. nine0003

Archiving posts from the profile

In addition to blocking the account, deleting posts and creating a private account, there is another way to hide content. Photos, videos and galleries can be archived.
