How to use Type Mode (text mode) in Instagram stories

Want to know more ways to make your Instagram stories stand out? Have you ever explored Instagram's font tools? For example TypeMode?

In this article, you'll learn how to use Instagram's TypeMode to edit colors, backgrounds, and text alignment in your Stories.

All 5 Font Styles

In addition to the existing default font style now called Classic, Instagram's Type Mode gives story publishers 4 new styles to choose from: Modern, Neon, Typewriter and Strong.

Modern is a big letters font with modern styling. It is made as bold, but not excessively. This typeface is good for many brands, especially brands with a modern style.

Neon is a bright italic typeface that looks like a neon sign. This typeface evokes more feminine associations and may be suitable for a younger audience. It can also be good for brands that position themselves as lighthearted and fun.

Typewriter is a traditional, simple font. If your brand positions itself as quirky, casual, or emphasizes simplicity, then this typeface would be a great choice for you.

Strong speaks for itself. Bold and large, and the italics give it a modern touch. This font is perfect if you want to make a clear statement or if your brand wants to be loud, proud, and highly stylized.

CTAs and other statements that need to stand out in your stories are best done using Classic, Modern, and Strong.

While each of these fonts has its own style, you should consider using different fonts for different message types and post purposes in your stories. As always, check and test each font to see how it fits your audience and how it drives engagement in your stories.

Editing the font color

After you choose from five font options, you can edit the text for additional styling.

To choose a color for text, select your font color from the color bubbles at the bottom of the screen. Or click and hold on any bubble to open the color spectrum, through which you can select a custom color.

You can change the color of specific letters or words in your text by highlighting the desired letter or word and then clicking on a different color.

You can even create a gradient effect for text. Click and select the radius of the text in the line that you want to apply the gradient to, and then click and drag on any color on the bubble to open the color spectrum. In parallel, with one hand, drag your finger over the text, and with the other hand, drag your other finger across the color spectrum in the direction you want your gradient to go.

Change font size and alignment

The default font size should be set for the classic font. You can adjust the size using the slider on the left side of the screen when printing.

To change the alignment, click on the alignment option in the top left corner to change left-, center- or right for text alignment.

You can also click on the A box to add a colored border around your text. Click A again to make the box transparent.

Modern and Neon fonts are always fully aligned and will adjust to fit the entire line width. To avoid creating one line of small text and another line of large text, separate your text with return/enter.

The Typewriter is one-dimensional and left-aligned by default. You can change the alignment to center or align to the right side by clicking the align button in the top left corner. You can also add a text box to the text by clicking on the A with asterisks in the top left corner.

Strong, like Modern and Neon, will always be fully aligned. You can also add a color box to it by selecting the A with stars in the top left corner.

Creating a text story

Instagram realized that sometimes users need to create a simple text story without anything extra. Previously, this involved taking a photo to start the story, painting the photo with a solid color, and then adding text to the post.

With the latest update and the addition of font selection, you can easily create text-only stories.

To get started, open Instagram Stories and from the bottom list of options, scroll down to the Text option on the left.

The default text font is Modern. To choose a different font, click on the Modern button at the top of the screen and switch to the desired font, choosing from 4 possible ones.

Note that you cannot use Classic in this case.

To apply your text, simply click on the screen where it says Tap to Type and type the text you want to include in your story.

You can also change the background gradient for your text. Each text option has different color gradients. Click on the color wheel in the lower left corner of the screen to view different color options.

When you're done with the text and background selection, click on the arrow in the circle to create a text story.

This will take you to stories mode, where you can edit content just like other stories. You will be able to move the location of the text box, resize it and rotate it. You can also add stickers, extra text, location tags, filters, and more.

When you're done editing, upload your story in the usual way.

Add text to a photo or video story

You can also add text to a standard photo and video story or even a Boomerang story.

To do this, simply create your story and select the Aa button in the top left corner. Click on the font name at the top of the screen and select the font option to add text. You can choose among all font options, including Classic, to see how the text will look in your post.
