How to promote a channel in Telegram. The author's experience
2020 has been a stellar year for Telegram. Firstly, it was unblocked, which means that now you can go to your channel without problems and troubles with VPN - just give a link. We run a channel about marketing in Telegram - now it has 10.1K subscribers. We also promote customer channels.
We work only with businesses and use paid promotion methods - publishing advertising posts on donor channels, targeted advertising, advertising from bloggers. We do not practice mutual PR, because he assumes that in exchange for advertising his channel, you need to advertise someone else. And this is never included in our plans and plans of our clients. So only according to the scheme: we pay, we are advertised.

We select donor channels
Let's say we have a task: bring us 1000 subscribers.
Before proceeding with its implementation, we make a forecast: how many people need to see an advertising post so that 1000 of them subscribe to the channel. It depends on the subject and quality of the content. On average, the ratio from view to subscription varies from 0. 4% to 6%.

Let's say the channel's theme is restaurant furniture. Rather narrow, but in demand in a separate b2b segment. Content - posts about the functionality of a particular solution, design cases. Written vividly, freshly, read with interest. Already accumulated experience in promoting channels tells us that we can expect that about 3% of people who work in the restaurant business and read an advertising post will become interested and subscribe to the channel.
So you need to write a clear text and show it to 33,000 target users.
What we take into account when selecting channels:
- Average coverage of one publication, not the number of subscribers.
For calculation, we take the last 10 posts. We enter the obtained values in column D of our spreadsheet. The goal is for the sum of all values in column D to be at least 33000.
- How many hours the publication will be in the top and in the feed
We enter this data in column E, they will help us then correctly plan publications.
Life hack
Together with the price of the advertising post, ask for the name of the bank, card number and the name of the cardholder at once and enter it all in columns G and H. Yes, the market is still young, unformed, nothing like Google Ads here yet no - you need to contact each blogger separately, negotiate, most of them accept transfers simply to debit cards. Once we transferred money to a blogger by phone number to the bank that was identified, but it turned out that he had a card of a completely different bank, which for some reason was not on the list. As a result, they made a return and everything ended well, but now we are insured like this.

Through telegram search
Keyword search in telegram is a long, tedious, but sure way to make a really high-quality selection of channels. It gives only three results - and that's when you start to really appreciate Google, Yandex and any other global search, and not take them for granted.
We stock up on patience and draw up semantics so that we can then manually enter each phrase in the search and see if there is something useful in the output.
Semantics
To begin with, we collect all the words that can be used to designate the business area we are interested in: restaurant business, horeca, hotel business, food tech, delivery.
Next - types of establishments: restaurant, bar, coffee shop, cafe, bistro, hotel, hotel, motel, hostel.
Now, since we are interested in the owners of these establishments, we add the pronoun “our” and get a completely different result: our restaurant, our bar, our coffee shop, our cafe, our bistro, our hotel, our hotel, our motel, our hostel .
For the same reason, we add the word "open": open a restaurant, open a bar, open a coffee shop, open a cafe, open a bistro, open a hotel, open a hotel, open a motel, open a hostel.
We play with prepositions: like a restaurant, to a restaurant, about a restaurant, to a restaurant, why a restaurant - and so with every word. Thank you, although the endings can not be coordinated - the search understands without it.
In general, no one will stop you if you have 30 more ideas on how to expand this semantics and find suitable channels for other queries.
In thematic collections
Most likely, someone has already done this work at least partially before you and posted their collection somewhere on the net. Ask Siri or Alice what to read about the restaurant business in Telegram. Well, or type in a query in the search engine, like "Telegram channels about the restaurant business."
Thematic collections have their pluses and minuses. The advantage is that their authors usually do not limit themselves to channel names and links, but also share their impressions about them. The downside is that such collections become outdated very quickly and, most likely, three or four of the “TOP 10 Telegram channels for restaurateurs” are no longer there at all, and a couple more have been blown away.
Not on exchanges
Exchanges like Tgstats, Telemetr, Telega.in are inconvenient because they have clumsy filters and if your subject is a little narrower than Business and Startups and Food and Cooking, as in our case, it is unlikely that you will be able to find something there.
The search on the stock exchanges is also bad - for the query "restaurant business" there is either nothing in the search results at all, or only irrelevant.
We draw up a publication plan
When the selection of channels is formed, we show it to the client and explain - look, in order to bring 1000 subscribers, we need to reach 33000 people, we can do it on such channels and we need such a budget for this. After agreement, we make translations - we mark each translation in green in the cells of column H and in the same place, in the notes, we attach screenshots of the translations. We send screenshots to bloggers and confirm the publication dates with them.
Now how do we choose publication dates. If we were to lead subscribers from Telegram channels to the site, we would simply place UTM tags in the links and then track in Google Analytics how many people came from which channel. But inside a telegram, when we lead people from other channels to our own, such a thing cannot be done. And you need to track the effectiveness of an advertising campaign. Therefore, we publish advertising posts not immediately in all channels, but in turn: first in one, a few days later in another, etc. And here are the exact intervals between posts to do, column E tells us.
For example, the conditions for posting a post on a channel are as follows: it stays in the top for 8 hours, and in the feed for 2 days. So on this channel we book the morning time in Moscow so that the post is in the top all working day, and on the next we plan to publish in two days. We need these 2 days so that subscribers go to the channel not in a crowd, but in a harmonious and civilized manner: while a post on one channel is from him, then from another, and we calmly measured how many of them came from where.
On some channels, the post is left in the feed forever. This is too long to wait, so 3 days after the publication on such a channel, we publish on the next one.
Writing and publishing promotional posts
It's a bad idea to write one promotional post and post it on all channels. Such publications always look aggressively advertising, clumsy and out of place. Therefore, we sharpen the post for each channel so that it does not stand out stylistically from the rest of the content. It also works because the audience on the channels of the same topic partially overlaps, and if the post did not hook someone on one channel, it may still not go unnoticed under a different sauce on another channel.
Bloggers who are lovingly reverent about their channel usually do not allow anyone to access the content themselves and take on the creation of advertising posts. In this case, we only have to approve the text with the client.
In any case, both when we write the post and when the blogger, at some stage each of the 3 parties gets access to the text: we, the customer, the blogger. Therefore, for each channel, we create the text in a separate Google Doc and place a link to it in cell J.
On the appointed date, the post appears on the channel - we make a screen of the publication and attach it to column K cell (namely, the screen, and not the link to the publication, because that not on all channels the post is saved in the feed forever).
Summing up the advertising campaign
We are interested in: the number of subscribers, the price of a subscriber, the ratio from view to subscription.
Number of subscribers
KPI that shows whether we have completed the task or not. We collect data in stages throughout the entire advertising campaign.
- We measure the initial number of subscribers on the channel.
- We publish an advertising post on the first donor channel.
- Before publishing an advertising post on the second donor channel, we make a cut - how many subscribers came from the previous channel and enter this value in the cell of column L.
- After we have entered the result of the last channel, we get the sum of all values of column L.
- Compare it with our goal - 1000 subscribers. We understand whether we are good or not.
Subscriber price
An indicator that gives an understanding from the category “here we obviously overpaid”, and along with this understanding, the opportunity to bargain with a blogger next time.
Spreadsheet is calculated automatically in column M.
It is good practice to send the result to the blogger in hot pursuit, discuss it and adjust the price for the future.
View-to-subscribe ratio
A metric that tells us where we hit the target audience and where we didn’t, and makes it possible to predict even more accurately next time how many people to reach in order to ensure the result.
- When we enter the number of new subscribers in column L, we immediately enter in column N how many views the post received on the channel.
- Column O will automatically calculate the ratio from view to subscription.
