To mute an individual chat on WhatsApp, find the contact in the Chats section of the app and open the chat. Tap on the person's profile picture located at the top left corner. In the interface that opens, tap on Mute notifications on an Android phone or Mute on an iPhone. From the pop-up, choose to mute the chat for eight hours, one week, or permanently. To mute the chat but continue receiving notifications in the notification shade, tap on the Show notifications checkbox. Android users can also mute a chat from the WhatsApp home screen. Tap and hold the chat and select the mute icon at the top right corner of the display. This allows multiple chats to be selected and muted at the time time.

The steps to mute a group chat on WhatsApp are similar to muting an individual chat. All users have to do is tap on a group chat, and then on the group name at the top. What Happens When you Block Someone on WhatsApp

When you block someone on WhatsApp, things get a little more serious. Blocking someone means that you won’t see any message that person sends you, at all.

You won’t get any type of notification that the user has been trying to contact you. The person you blocked won’t be able to see your last seen or if you’re online.

You also won’t see things such as:

Their profile picture
Any new profile picture
Status (You won’t see theirs, and they won’t see yours)

If that user tries to call you, the call won’t go through. Sooner or later, the user is going to know something is up since the messages they send you will only result in them seeing one checkmark and not two.

One checkmark means that the message is sent, but two means that the other person has received it. Your profile picture won’t be seen by that person either.

If you and the person you blocked are in a group, they will still be able to see everything you post and vice versa. The person you blocked will still appear in your list of contacts. If you want to make him/her disappear entirely, you need to remove them from your device’s contacts.
