Are you wondering how to tag someone on Facebook?

Tagging is an important part of any social media service, as it allows you to notify others that you've mentioned them. This helps increase the reach on the post, can make it easier to find in the future, and provides a link that people can click to see that friend's page.

Let's take a look at some of the ways you can tag others on Facebook. Keep in mind that your friends' privacy settings may affect the effectiveness of some of these methods.

When you post a status update, you can tag your friends by typing an @ symbol followed by their name. As you type, a small window appears and updates automatically to show the best match for the text you've entered.

Click someone's name (or use the arrow keys and Enter) and it will appear highlighted in blue on your post. This means you've successfully tagged them.

In addition to your own friends, you can also tag other people and pages on Facebook. This includes friends of friends, business pages, and similar. The same method works for tagging others in comments across Facebook, too.

Just be aware that if your post privacy is set to Friends, tagging someone makes your post visible to their friends as well. You'll see the post privacy button change to Friends (+) to reflect this---see our guide to Facebook symbols if this is new to you.

2. Mention Who You Were With

Facebook allows you to add several elements to your posts, including feelings, location check-ins, and similar. One of these lets you mention that you were with certain friends.

To use it, click the Tag Friends option, which looks like a blue silhouette of a person with a tag next to it. This brings up a search box where you can enter a friend's name. Use the box to select one or more of your friends here. Be aware that unlike the above, you can only tag your own friends using this method, since you're claiming that you were with them.

Click Done when you're satisfied, and you'll see a new [Your name] is with [friend's name] line at the top of your status. Enter your post as usual and people will see this line to explain who you were with. Like the above, this allows friends of your friends to see the post.

While tagging people makes sense when mentioning them in what your status says, this method is more useful for letting people know your friends were actually with you for something.

3. Photo Tagging

Tagging friends in photos adds their name to a With line in the photo's description. It also lets others easily identify them by mousing over their face in the picture.

In addition, photos that you're tagged in appear in the Photos of You tab on the Photos section of your Timeline. Like both of the above, tagging someone allows their friends to see the photo too.

To tag an existing photo, open it---the image can be yours or someone else's. Click the Tag icon in the top-right, then click on a face in the image. Below the box, enter the name of a friend; friends of friends and pages also work.

Depending on the privacy settings of the person you tagged and the owner of the photo, they may have to approve the tag manually. And you might not see the tag option at all on other people's photos, if they have disabled the option to let other people tag their images.

If you want to add tags to your own photo when you upload it, click the Edit button at the top-left of the image when you have the post open. Click Tag photo from the left side, then follow the same steps to click on faces and enter names.

Facebook Tagging Made Easy

The above three methods are the main ways to use the tagging feature on Facebook. Use the @name method anywhere you want to highlight a friend or bring their attention to a post. Don't forget that you can always share a link to public Facebook posts if you just want them to see something, too.

Facebook Message Tag Guidelines [2022]

Facebook does not allow you to send messages at any time - you can only reach customers with the Message tag after 24 hours. In this article, we will discuss the different types of Message tags and their use cases. We have prepared a step-by-step guide to using the Message Tag. In addition, you will learn the rules for using the Message Tag on Facebook, as well as the best practices for using the Message Tag.

Do you already have a Facebook page and want to start sending messages to customers? Check out our documentation on connecting your Facebook Page to respond.io

Message tag: Introduction

You can't send Facebook messages to your customers at any time. To prevent users from spamming after the first conversation and to encourage quick responses, Facebook only allows businesses to respond to customers within 24 hours.

However, there are many cases where companies need to send a message to their customers outside of the 24-hour message window. For example, when executing a complex request or when responding to messages accumulated over the weekend.

Here's the good news: Companies can still contact customers after 24 hours by adding a Message Tag to the message. However, message tags are only allowed for a limited number of use cases.

Message tag: Types and use cases

Facebook message tags come in four different types:

The following are examples of how to use each message tag type: Use the Confirmed Event Update tag to send reminders or updates to events for which customers have registered. For example, a meeting reminder or a booking confirmation.

Message tag types

The Post-Purchase Update tag is used to notify customers that their recent purchase information has been updated. You can use it to send invoices, receipts, or shipping updates.

The account update tag is great for notifying customers of non-recurring changes to their app or account. This includes app status updates and scam alerts.

The Human Agent tag expands the messaging window from 24 hours to 7 days, giving you more time to respond to complex requests or when you're away. The tag is currently in beta and only available to select CRMs such as respond.io.

Now that you know what each type of Facebook Messenger tag is used for, it's time to learn how to use the message tag.

How to use message tags

To start using message tags, you need to connect Messenger to a CRM like respond.io. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to send a tagged message:

1. Press Send tagged message in the input panel. Please note that the button will only appear 7 days after the Facebook message is received.

Send message button labeled

You do not need to manually attach a message tag for the first 7 days as the Human Agent tag will be automatically added to your message.

2. Select the appropriate message tag based on the content of the message.

3. Add a post or snippet by typing / in the field.

4. Click the Submit button and you're done. You can see the type of message label being used next to the message bubble.

Post tag metadata

Facebook has strict rules for using post tags. Before you start using post tags, be sure to review the rules for using post tags in the next section.

Message tag: Know the rules

Message tags are a great way to communicate with customers outside of the message box. However, there are two caveats: you can't use message tags to send promotional content, and you can't misuse them.

Post tag rules

Facebook does not allow advertising content with a post tag. What is promotional content? According to Facebook, promotional content includes, but is not limited to, deals, offers, coupons, and discounts.

Sponsored Messages must be used to send promotional messages outside the message box. Sponsored Posts is a paid service for marketing purposes.

Each message label is for a specific use case. The use of message tags for other purposes that are not intended is against Facebook Messenger policy. For example, the "Account Update" tag cannot be used for recurring messages such as "Card Statement Ready".

Please be aware that Facebook enforces these policies very strictly. Violation may result in a temporary or even permanent ban on the use of post tags.

What happens if you violate the message tag rules

Facebook may limit your ability to use the Message Tag if you send promotional content or use the Message Tag inappropriately. In our experience, before restricting the use of post tags, Facebook first warns about it.

As far as we know, there are five levels of sanctions imposed by Facebook:
