Why you can trust Pocket-lint
(Pocket-lint) - Despite people's general distrust of all things Facebook after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Messenger continues to be immensely popular. It's not without its issues though. You've probably seen people online when they aren't or have experienced that problem yourself.
Messenger can sometimes cause drama by showing you as online when you actually aren't. Not ideal if you're meant to be working or if friends and family see you as online and think you're ignoring your messages.
Alternatively, if you've found you're still logged into Facebook Messenger on a device you no longer own, you may want to log out of that device remotely to prevent unwanted access.
Don't fret, we're here to help with various tips to help get you out of Messenger with ease.

If you have the Messenger app installed on your smartphone then the good news is it's fairly easy to access the settings to log out of Messenger both on that device and others too.
Pocket-lint
Firstly open the messenger app, then follow these steps:
Following these steps, you'll be able to log out of various different devices with just a few clicks. This will help with phantom devices you're still logged into that might be causing you to appear online when you don't want to be.
You may find an inexplicable number of devices logged into Facebook here but many of them are likely duplicates too. So don't panic too much.
While you're in this security section of the app we'd also recommend considering changing your password and using a password manager to make sure it's secure.
If you're worried about account security then you can (and should) set up and use two-factor authentication in these settings too.

If you're just keen to not constantly have your Messenger showing you as online, then there are other options aside from logging out. You can also change your active status within settings. Turning off active status will help with this issue.
In the settings for active status you'll see a note about this feature which reads:
"Your friend and connections can see when you are active or have recently been active on this profile. You can see this info about them too. To change this setting, turn it off whenever you're using Messenger or Facebook and your active status will no longer be shown."
To turn the active status off follow these steps:

If you're concerned about your organisation's security, this is a no-brainer.
You can choose to make this temporary by selecting a time period of an hour, eight hours, until the next day or a custom time period. Alternatively, you can use this to turn active status off until you turn it back on.

If you don't have your phone you can also log off Facebook Messenger on your desktop device too. The steps are similar so it's fairly straightforward. First click on your profile photo on the top right of the website then follow these steps:
Again if you haven't already it's worth setting up and using two-factor authentication and a secure password here too if you're worried.

As well as logging off, Facebook also gives you the chance to hide your active status on Messenger even to the point of editing it to hide your status to certain people.
To do this, head over to the Messenger website here. Click on your profile image in the top left and click on preferences, then click on "Active Status". You can then choose to turn it off or on entirely or to select people who can see your online status. So you can hide it to everyone except a select few or just turn it off for that troublesome friend who keeps wondering why you're online but not replying.

It's tricky but it can be done
There are many reasons why you may want to log out of Facebook Messenger on your iOS and Android based devices. It could be you want to use another account with the messenger, you don’t want others to find your messages in the messenger app, and so on.
The issue is that the messenger app doesn’t actually have an option to log yourself out. This is unlike many other apps where you have a clear button or option to sign out from your account. However, there are some ways to log out of Facebook Messenger on your devices.

You can log out of Facebook Messenger on iOS-based devices like iPhone and iPad by using the Messenger app itself. However, the procedure isn’t as straightforward as many other apps.
Unlike iOS, Android allows you to play around with the data stored by your installed applications. Since most apps store your login details in these data files, clearing these files can log you out from your chosen apps.
Thanks to this flexibility, you can easily log yourself out from Facebook Messenger by removing its app data. This won’t affect or remove any messages you have sent or received in the app. Those are saved on Facebook’s servers and not locally on your device.
You don’t necessarily need to use the Facebook Messenger itself to log yourself out. You can use the official Facebook app as well to manage your logged-in devices and sign yourself out from various services including the Messenger.
This method works on both iOS as well as Android-based devices. You should have the Facebook app up and running on your phone before you do the procedure.
A good thing about Facebook is that, although you use it on various devices, your data and settings are stored on a universal server.
If you make a single change in your account, it reflects across all your devices.
Using that feature, you can actually log out of the Facebook Messenger on your iOS and Android devices by simply accessing the Facebook site on your computer. This way you don’t need to reach out to your phone and you can remotely log out yourself.
If you don’t find logging-in and out from the Facebook Messenger a convenient task, you can use the company’s self-destructing messaging feature to send your messages. This way your messages will be deleted within minutes or seconds after they’ve been read.

It's been a while since Messenger became Facebook's personal messaging app that works offline. This is convenient and many users liked it, but there is one thing - the application does not contain a button to log out. The original Facebook app has a similar feature. It became especially inconvenient to use Messenger in the presence of several profiles. However, there is a reason for joy - you can still log out of the system, moreover, both on Android and iOS or PC.

Today we managed to find 2 ways to log out of your personal profile in Messenger on Android OS: clear application data using Settings or log out of the current user on Facebook.
To exit Messenger you need to do:
If you open Messenger now, you will notice that it lacks authorization on the service. Automatic login is currently unavailable.
An alternative to using multiple profiles is to clone the application. Similar functionality is available on most modern smartphones and is located in the "Settings" section. Cloning allows you to duplicate any application but share their user data, meaning they work independently of each other.
It's almost certain that owners of smartphones with Messenger also have the Facebook app.
They are interconnected to facilitate authorization. Facebook profile data is pulled to Messenger so the user doesn't have to sign in twice. The same is true in another situation where a person logs out of a Facebook account.
Manual:
Approximate principle is the same, but with some differences:
The next time you open Messenger, you will be prompted to log in with the same account as before, or provide different login information.
You can leave the active profile in the application on iOS or Android from any other device via Facebook. The only condition is the presence of a device with access to the network.
Procedure:
It may be a bit annoying to have to do more to log out of your account, but Facebook doesn't offer alternative ways yet.
And the developer does not seek to make any adjustments in this area. You either have to put up with this state of affairs, or switch to using another social network.

Some time ago, Facebook decided to make Messenger its own app. Facebook Messenger does not have a logout icon like the original Facebook app, and this can be very annoying for some users.
In this article, we will show you how to log out of Messenger on Android and iOS from your phone or PC.

There are two ways to log out of Facebook Messenger on Android: clear the Messenger app data in the device settings or log out of the Messenger session in the Facebook app.
To log out of Facebook Messenger, you need to go to settings of your Android device. Next, you need to do the following:
Now when you go back to click on Messenger in the app drawer, you'll see that it won't automatically sign you in.
Helpful Hint: If someone else wants to use your phone to check their Facebook messages while you're still logged in, they just need to press "Change account" to log into his account.
If you have Messenger on your phone, chances are you also have the Facebook app itself. In the Android version of the Facebook app, click on the icon "More" in the upper right corner (it should be displayed in three lines), then go to "Settings" and "Privacy", and then to section "Settings". Here you should see your account and security settings. Scroll down to section "Security" and select " Security and login ". After that, you will see the " Where are you signed in " section, then just select your Messenger session and click "Logout".
How to log out using the Facebook app. Open your Facebook app (not Messenger, but the Facebook iOS app itself), then click on the More icon in the bottom right corner.
Scroll down to Settings, click on Account Settings, then click on Security. In menu "Security" go to " Where are you logged in ". Once you open it, you can manage all active sessions of your Facebook account on any device, app or browser. Then just close the session listed as "Facebook Messenger on iOS 10" or whatever version of iOS your iPhone is running. The next time you open Messenger, you will be signed out and asked to sign in again with the same account as before, or you can switch accounts at that point.
You can log out of the iOS or Android Messenger apps from the Facebook website, from your PC, or from your mobile phone's browser. Go to Facebook.com, then select "Settings" from the drop-down menu in the top right corner.
