So, you want to delete all that crap you receive from your friends and relatives on WhatsApp but the hassle of going through them one by one makes you want to rip your hair out?

Lucky you because recently WhatsApp has rolled out a storage management feature which will make deleting videos, pictures, and GIFs as easy as pie.

Here’s how to do it:

On the main page where all your chats are, press the three dots at the top right of the screen, and select ‘Settings.’

Select ‘Storage and data.’

And you’ll be able to see an option called ‘Manage storage.

Once you’re in there, it will tell you how much storage is used and how much is available.

At the bottom of that will be all your media files separated into two sections: ‘Forwarded many times’ and ‘Larger than 5 MB.’

You have a few options from here on how you can delete these files. You can select on the sections mentioned above and delete all of them, or go through them one by one and select which you would like to delete.

There’s also an option at the bottom which lists down all chats that you had with your contacts and you can delete media files that have been shared there.

If you don't see this option, make sure you've updated WhatsApp through the Play Store or App Store on Android and iOS respectively.

I don’t know about you, but I managed to delete at least 2GB of stupid pictures, videos, and gifs from my phone.

Remember to go through them if you have some media files you want saved.

Happy purging!

Home How To Want to delete pics, videos etc from a WhatsApp chat and keep only texts? Here’s how

WhatsApp saves all the photos, videos and GIFs from every chat when it backs up your chats.

It’s unnecessary clutter and you really don’t need all that there, you can delete them from the chat itself and keep just the texts.

Since WhatsApp is literally the most popular messaging app out there, pretty much everyone is on it. While it's great for convenience, this also means that you will be bombarded with forwarded photos and videos you really do not want.

Fortunately, for annoying chats like these, both individual and group chats, WhatsApp has introduced a forever mute option so as you are not annoyed by the alerts and can choose to check the messages if and when you want to.

There is also the option of turning down auto-downloads of media on your account so nothing, not even stickers, will be downloaded on your device unless you manually do it.

Also Read: WhatsApp to get join missed calls, biometric lock, new calls feature soon

In all this, there also might be some texts that you actually need and might want to keep so deleting entire texts is not an option. On WhatsApp you can choose to delete the media (photos, videos, GIFs etc) while keeping the messages only.

    On both Android and iOS,

    - Go to Settings, click on Data and Storage Usage, then click on Storage Usage.

    - Select the contact or the group whose media you want to delete.

    - Click on Manage and then tick all the boxes you want deleted - like photos or videos or GIFs, or all of them. Leave out the text messages box.

    - Click on Clear and then confirm.

Alternately, you can see that you have the option to just keep the media and delete the texts. Pick what you need.

Going forward, you can adjust settings for particular group chats/contacts to prevent media from getting downloaded automatically.

On iOS, go to Chat, select the contact or the group chat you want to stop these auto-downloads for. Click on the contact or subject on top of the display, then go to Save to Camera Roll and change Default/Always to Never.

Also Read: WhatsApp now lets you mute chats forever

For Android, go to the contact or group chat, click on the top bar, select media visibility, change the settings here from default to a no or a yes, as you want. Click on okay to confirm your selection.

Across iOS, you can stop media from being saved to your camera roll by going to Settings, clicking on Chats and toggling off ‘Save to Camera Roll' from Default/Always to Never.

On Android you can do it by going to Settings, then Chats, then toggling off Show Media in Gallery or Media Visibility.

    Special tip

There's another tried and tested way around this where you can take a look at what has been sent and then decide if you want to save that photo or video or not. This works only if you use WhatsApp Web chat.

On WhatsApp web, you can check out the media sent on the web first and then decide if you want to download it and save it on your smartphone. Downloading media on the web does not automatically save it on your smartphone.

My Files app that is pre-installed on most Android phones. Depending on the brand and model, the name of the application may differ. If you can't find it, you can use the Google Play app, ES File Explorer. Be careful, once this is done, you won't be able to recover images and videos in a simple or normal way, it's another thing to root your phone and use dedicated apps to recover deleted data.

When we open "my files" we perform the following steps:

    Subscribe to our Youtube channel

    • Click Device Storage.
    • Find and select the WhatsApp folder.
    • Press Media.
    • Several folders will appear here, including whatsapp images, we select this to delete images.
    • Hundreds or thousands of images will appear, to delete them all, press the menu button and press "Select All" as shown in the image. Go down the list and deselect the "sent" folder.

Then we can enter the sent / sent folder and delete the WhatsApp images we need. With all images selected except for the Sent Items folder, click on the trash can that appears above. After that, it will ask us to confirm the deletion of a large number of images. We accept and the cleaning will begin.

We can do the same with the folder " sent ", we enter it and select one by one or better "select all" so that it will delete everything related to the images sent by us via WhatsApp.

After cleaning, we will see in the photo and video gallery that whatsapp is missing, don't panic, it's normal, we have cleared all the images received through the messaging app. The moment they send us a photo again, the WhatsApp image gallery will appear.

To do this with the app File explorer ES Pretty much the same, if we don't find the WhatsApp folder, we can search from the app.

Delete entire image galleries and photos

This procedure can be done in latest versions of android . We can remove these galleries directly from the image and video galleries. The problem with this procedure is that the entire gallery is deleted by clicking and holding for a moment on the gallery we want to delete, it will be selected and at the top we can click on the trash, thus destroying everything it contains...0003
