Unsplash / AsterfolioHave you ever sent a WhatsApp message that you quickly regretted? Or maybe you second-guessed it later that day or the following week? Either way, same here. It's not a great feeling, and it really makes us wish the messaging service had some sort of undo button.
Well, did you know it does?
Starting in 2017, WhatsApp began allowing users to delete their sent messages with a feature called "Delete for everyone". There are a couple of caveats to how it works - like that you have to delete your sent message within a certain timeframe. Still, here's everything you need to know.

How to delete your sent WhatsApp messages
Update and open the latest version of the WhatsApp app on your phone and follow these steps:
- Go to the chat with the message you wish to delete.
- Tap and hold the message, then choose Delete from the menu.
- You can also select more messages to delete multiple messages at once.
- Then, tap Delete, and then tap Delete for Everyone.
Tip: Tapping Delete for Me instead of Delete for Everyone will only delete the message for you. Your recipient will still see it.
How long do you have to delete a message?
To successfully delete a message you sent to someone on WhatsApp, you must decide to do so within the first two days. You can't delete it after that, WhatsApp explained on Twitter. Originally, WhatsApp capped the ability to delete messages to 7 minutes after they were sent, and then it extended that to an hour. The ability to delete a message within two days first started in August 2022.
Can a recipient tell if you delete a message?
Yes. Your recipient will see a "This message was deleted" notice (which won't look suspicious or anything).
Seriously, though, they can also accidentally read messages you've sent before you've had a chance to delete them.
Who can delete messages?
The ability to delete messages you've sent on WhatsApp up to two days afterward is now rolling out to all WhatsApp users on Android and iPhone.

While iMessage is getting the option to “unsend” messages for the first time with iOS 16 beta, WhatsApp already provides a similar feature. However, the Meta (Facebook)-owned messaging app is now releasing an update that will let users delete messages up to two days after they were sent.
Deleting sent messages on WhatsApp
The change in the option to delete sent messages was announced by WhatsApp itself on its Twitter profile. According to the company, users will now have two days to decide to unsend a message in a private or group chat.
More specifically, WhatsApp users will have two days and 12 hours to delete a message after sending it. Previously, this limit was only one hour, eight minutes, and 16 seconds – that was specific. In order to delete a message sent in WhatsApp, all you need to do is tap and hold on it for a few seconds, then tap the “Delete” button.
Interestingly, while WhatsApp is increasing the time users have to delete a message, Apple is going in the opposite direction with iMessage.
In the first beta versions of iOS 16, users had 15 minutes to unsend a message. Now with the latest betas, this limit has been reduced to only two minutes.
The feature has been quite controversial as some users believe that options to edit and unsend messages can be used for malicious purposes. This also led Apple to add a change history for edited messages in iMessage. Meanwhile, the popular WhatsApp and iMessage competitor Telegram lets users edit and delete messages without any limits.

As noted by MacMagazine, WhatsApp has also been working on a feature to let group admins delete messages from any users. However, this feature is still only available for beta users at this point. More recently, WhatsApp has released an official migration tool from Android to iOS and vice versa, as well as a new beta app for macOS users.
WhatsApp is available for free on the App Store. It requires an iPhone running iOS 12 or later.

How to delete a WhatsApp message after sending
The latest app updates made it possible to delete messages sent to WhatsApp chat. And it does not depend on whether they were read or not.
- Once you've sent a message, you have 68 minutes to delete it. When this time passes, there will be no going back.
- To delete a message, hold it down until the message management menu appears. Click on the urn icon which indicates the delete option.
- If 68 minutes has not yet passed, select "Delete for all". Later, only the "Delete for me" function will be visible, which will only delete the message from your chat, but not from the chat of the interlocutor.
- Instead of a message in the chat, the notification "This message has been deleted" will remain. The recipient will also see this notification, regardless of whether they have read the deleted message or not.
- In group chats, deleting works the same way.
By the way, if your interlocutor is offline, you cannot be sure that he did not read the message. Your friend might have seen it on their smartphone's lock screen.

Theoretically, you only have 68 minutes to delete a message for both parties. But this rule can be tricked and even older messages can be deleted.
- To do this, open "Settings" on your smartphone and activate the flight mode.
- On iOS, select "Date & Time" under the "General" category. On Android, the same item is in the main settings menu.
- Turn off automatic time detection and then manually change the date and time to match the period you sent the message.
- Open WhatsApp and delete the message as described in the instructions above. Activate the automatic time setting again and only then exit the flight mode.
Please note that this security hole will be closed shortly. But in any case, you will have a whole 68 minutes.

What is the meaning of the checkbox for whatsapp?
Whenever you type a whatsapp message and press the Enter key, the message will go through 4 different stages in a significant amount of time and different tick symbols are set at each stage. Below are the 4 checkboxes that appear when sending a whatsapp message.
1. The clock symbol indicates that the message was published but not delivered, or the whatsapp server did not work, or there is no such recipient.
2. One check mark - One check mark indicates that the message has been successfully published to the whatsapp server, but has not yet been delivered to the recipient of the mobile device.
3. Double tick - means that the whatsapp message was successfully delivered to the appropriate recipient.
4. Double tick in blue - means that the sent whatsapp message was successfully delivered and the recipient read it.
How to stop wrongly sent whatsapp message delivered to destination
1: How to delete whatsapp message when the clock pops up.
At this stage, the message that you typed and sent has not yet gone to the second stage (ie, it has not yet left your device). Therefore, deleting the message from the device at this stage will prevent it from being delivered to the recipient.
But this will only happen when your mobile internet connection is slow enough to send whatsapp instant messages. With a slow internet connection, it will take time to move messages from one device to another. At the same time, until the messages are transferred from the sender's device to the whatsapp server, when you delete it immediately during the clock icon, the message will be deleted and will no longer be sent to the recipient.

Open your whatsapp account
Open the whatsapp contact profile of the person you sent the wrong message to by mistake and want to stop it before it is delivered.
Temporarily block the contact on whatsapp until the recipient logs into whatsapp on their mobile device automatically blocking messages from delivery, or keep the block for 30 days.
If the recipient opens their whatsapp account while you have it blocked, your message will never be delivered, even if you unblock it later. Attention: unblocking the recipient before they open their whatsapp account (or) before the 30 days has passed will deliver the message to the recipient.
Note: Undelivered whatsapp messages will be automatically deleted after 30 days from the whatsapp server (if you send a whatsapp message to a contact or if the recipient is unavailable and has not turned on whatsapp on their device for the last 30 days, then the message will be automatically deleted from the server whatsapp, so it will not reach the recipient).
Don't have the patience to wait 30 days, or once you know the recipient has opened their whatsapp, unblock their whatsapp contact and make sure your wrong message isn't delivered.
Now you know that the message you sent by mistake will never be read because it was not delivered to the recipient you accidentally sent the message to.
Note: if the recipient has a privacy set, then you will never know if the recipient has opened whatsapp or not.
3: How to delete whatsapp message after double checking (double tick)?
If you are at this stage, then you are out of luck because the message you entered has already been delivered to the recipient, therefore, it can only be deleted from the recipient's mobile device in whatsapp.
If you have a blue double label, then there is no point in trying to delete this message, since it has already been read by the recipient. Therefore, the damage has already been done, now you need to deal with the consequences of what you did, so be very careful with whom and what you write, because, unlike words that are thrown into the air and which do not have physical records as evidence of our sin, whatsapp messages are recorded and we will have to pay for all our mistakes.
