Telegram users can create Chat Backgrounds or search for available options from the app. There's even an option to share backgrounds with other users.

Telegram offers users several customization options, including the ability to create custom Chat Backgrounds and add visual effects to existing ones. Users can even set different chat backgrounds for different chats. While the feature might not be useful for all users, it's a treat for those who like to change their chat backgrounds often.

Telegram also allows users to set custom notification sounds for specific chats, a feature that isn't available on WhatsApp. Instead of using the same notification sound for all contacts, users can set different sounds for specific contacts to recognize who has sent a text through the message tone. The platform also allows users to set up a public username. Like other social media platforms, the Telegram username must be unique.

Telegram introduced Chat Backgrounds 2.0 via an update in January 2019. The feature allows Telegram users to create and customize their chat backgrounds on the platform. While WhatsApp allows users to choose from four categories, including Bright, Dark, Solid Colors, and gallery uploads, Telegram provides a wider range of options. Users can choose from abstract pattern backgrounds, bright gradients, solid colors, wallpapers from the internet, and more. In fact, users can even apply blur and motion effects on supported chat backgrounds.

To create or customize Telegram chat backgrounds, head over to Settings > Chat Settings > Change Chat Background on Android or Settings > Appearance > Chat Background on iOS. This is the same menu used to activate Telegram's Dark Mode. In the menu, tap on Set a Color and select one from the available options containing solid backgrounds and gradients. Users can now choose to add patterns or adjust opacity for the selected background. If choosing a background with a gradient, users will see a second option to select colors. Once the changes are made, tap on Set at the bottom of the screen.

Telegram users can also choose from photographs available in the Chat Background menu. When an image is selected, users can either blur the image or add motion to it. There's even an option to search for backgrounds on the web by tapping on the magnifying glass at the top right corner of the menu. For instance, Iron Man fans who want a themed chat background can search for available options from right within the app. Users who want to share a particular background with someone else on Telegram can do so by tapping on the arrow icon at the top-right corner of the display.

Launch your Telegram Mobile app.

Select Settings from the lower-right corner of your mobile screen.

Scroll down to the Appearance section. Choose Chat Background heading.

Now, Set a background image from the default collection or choose one from your image gallery.

Similarly, launch the Telegram app for Windows 10 PC.

Click the Menu button in the upper left corner of the app screen, visible as 3 horizontal bars.

From the list of options displayed, select Settings.

When the new window opens, select Chat Settings.

If directed to a new screen, move to the Chat Background section. There you will find 2 options to change the chat background.

Choose from File – Lets you set any photo from your gallery as your chat background. It also allows you to search the web for wallpapers.
Choose from Gallery – An option to simply set something nice real quick via backgrounds available in the official selection.

Select the desired option and preview the change in the background before hitting the Apply button.

If all seems OK choose the background and start messaging!

Changing the background in the Telegram chat

On Android

To change the background in Telegram to a different background on an Android device, you need:

On the main screen, click on three vertical dots.
Click "Settings" in the list.
Scroll down the page and tap the Chat Options button.
Activate the "Change background" function.

The list contains the catalog of templates loaded into the Telegram program by default. Select the appropriate image and tap on it. The picture editing window will open:

If you click on "Pattern", you can delete the pattern and only the color will remain.

Go to the official website of Web Telegram and log in to your account.
Expand the menu by hovering over the three horizontal lines.
In the context window, click on the "Settings" tab.
Go to the General Settings section.
Click on the "Chat background" link.
Select an image and wait until the file is uploaded from the server.

If necessary, you can enable blurring by checking the appropriate checkbox or choose colors for the background of the conversation instead of the picture.

How to upload your own background image for a chat

Users can upload their own photos from the gallery of their phone or personal computer instead of the default templates. Consider the instructions on how to change the picture to your own, for mobile devices, PC and web version of the messenger.

For Android

Touch three horizontal lines on the Telegram start screen.

On the main screen, move the cursor over three horizontal lines.
Click on the gear icon.
In the new section, click the messages icon.
Scroll down to Chat Background.
Click on the "Choose File" button to open Windows Explorer.
Select the file and click "Open".
A preview will open, where you can set the blur for the image by checking the corresponding checkbox.

Save the settings by clicking the "Apply" link.

For Web Telegram

In the web version of Telegram, you need to do the following steps:

Hover over three horizontal lines.
A context menu will be displayed, where select "Settings".
Open the "General Settings" and "Chat Background" tabs.
Click on "Upload image".
Windows Explorer will appear and select the file.

Wait until the image is uploaded (the download percentage chart will be displayed on the screen). It remains to mark the image, and it will automatically be installed.
