How to Change the Instagram Icon on iPhone or Android

  • If you want to change the Instagram icon on your mobile device, there's one way to do it on an iPhone or iPad, and a couple methods on Android.
  • You can use the Shortcuts app for iOS or iPadOS to create a custom icon for Instagram.
  • If you want a custom Instagram icon for Android, you can install an icon-changing app or a launcher. 

The Instagram app icon is unmistakable — the circle, square, and dot that conveys the impression of a classic camera with elegant simplicity. But if you're tired of that aesthetic, you might be pleased to know that you can change the icon.

For a brief moment in time, Instagram included the ability to change the icon from the app's own settings, but that was only to celebrate its 10-year anniversary. Here's how to do it using the tools on your iPhone or Android.       

How to change the Instagram app icon on an iPhone or iPad

If you have an iOS device, you can use the Shortcuts app to give any app you like a unique icon. There are some prerequisites, though. You need to be running iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 or higher, have the Shortcuts app installed on your device, and have the image you want to use for the Instagram app icon saved to your Photos library. 

Once you have all the pieces in place, it only takes a few taps to change the any app's icon, including Instagram's icon. Using the Shortcuts app, you simply need to create a new shortcut and choose the Open App action. From there, choose Instagram, give the shortcut a name (such as "Instagram,") and select a photo to use as the new shortcut image.

When you're done, the new shortcut appears on your iOS device with the name "Instagram" and the image you selected in the icon. You can hide the original Instagram app so you don't have two icons for the same app on the home page. 

How to change the Instagram app icon on an Android phone or tablet

If you have an Android device, you have a couple options for changing your Instagram icon, though you'll need to install a third-party app to do so.

Using an app

There are a number of apps in the Google Play store that let you change app icons, and many are free. Even so, some features may only be available through in-app purchases and many apps rely on in-app ads to unlock features. We'll use X Icon Changer to demonstrate how the process works, though you can use a different app if you prefer.

1. Install X Icon Changer from the Google Play store.  

2. Tap and hold a blank spot on your phone's home screen and then, in the dropdown menu, choose Widgets.

3. Scroll down to find X Icon Changer. Tap and hold the icon, then when the home screen appears, select where you want the icon to go, and let go of the screen.

4. Scroll through the list of apps installed on your phone and tap Instagram. 

5. Select the image you want to use. You can browse the various tabs of pre-made icons, you can take a photo, or choose an image from your photo library.

6. When you're done, tap OK. 

Like most icon-changers apps, you might need to wait through the occasional ad to complete these steps. 

Using a launcher

Another way to change the Instagram icon (or any other app icon, for that matter) is by installing a launcher. In addition to letting you customize the appearance of your phone, most launchers let you customize the icons. Smart Launcher, for example, is a popular launcher that makes it easy to change icons. We'll demonstrate how to do that, but you can accomplish the same thing with many other launchers.  

1. Install Smart Launcher from the Google Play store.

2. Run Smart Launcher for the first time and complete the initial setup. You will be offered the opportunity to upgrade to one of the app's premium subscription tiers, but you can opt out of that and continue using it for free. 

3. Find Instagram (Smart Launcher automatically sorts the app onto the Communication page). Tap and hold the icon until the pop-up menu appears, then choose the Edit icon.

4. Pick the icon you want to use. You can choose From gallery (your phone's photo gallery), Smart Launcher (an icon collection that comes with the launcher) or any other icon packs that are installed.

Have you ever browsed through your Instagram Explore page and wondered why the content is not relevant to your interests? Instagram is a great platform to get exposed to new content that compliments your interests.

But sometimes, you might come across posts that you do not like. Alternatively, your interests could change.

Instagram has options that allow you to change what you see on Instagram. This way, you don’t have to scroll through multiple posts that you are not interested in.

Here’s how you can change your Instagram Explore page.

How Does Instagram Choose Content for Your Explore Page?

Your Instagram Explore page helps you find new content through selected posts. These posts are based on the people you follow and the content you engage in.

On your Instagram "for you" page, you will notice that when you select a recommended post, at the bottom of that specific post, Instagram tells you why that post is on your Explore page. The posts on your Explore page could be influenced by any of the following factors:

  • Posts you saved.
  • Photos you liked.
  • Posts recommended by Instagram.
  • Accounts you follow.
  • Content similar to posts you have interacted with.
  • Videos you have watched.

If your Instagram does not reflect your interests, and you are not fully pleased with what you see, there are ways to clean up your Instagram.

How to Change Your Explore Page On Instagram

The best way to change the content on your Explore page is to change your behavior on Instagram. If you follow a lot of beauty influencers, for example, you will most likely see a lot of beauty content.

Since Instagram does not have a reset option that instantly changes your Explore page, there are a few things you can do to influence what you see on this part of the app. We've listed some of these below.

1. Clear Your Search History

Clearing your search history is a pretty straightforward process. All you need to do is follow the steps below.

  1. Sign into Instagram.
  2. Tap on your profile icon in the bottom right-hand corner.
  3. Click on the hamburger menu icon (three-line icon) in the top right.
  4. Click on Your activity.
  5. Select Recent searches.
  6. Here, you will see your recent searches. Tap on Clear All to clear your recent search history.

2. Manually Change Settings on Your Explore Page

You can manually change your Explore page by individually removing posts you do not like. By individually selecting these, you are allowing Instagram to change the algorithm—since it now knows the content that is unwanted on your page.

Here’s how to manually change settings on your Explore page:

  • Go to your Explore page in the Instagram app.
  • Select the Instagram post that you don’t like.
  • Once the post you do not like is open, click on the three-dot menu icon of that post.
  • Select the Not Interested option. The post will then be removed from the feed.

Besides these tips, you might want to start thinking about who to unfollow on Instagram if you're seeing a lot of uninteresting content.

3. Clear Your Instagram Cache

When you browse through Instagram and visit various profiles frequently, Instagram stores that data, making it easier to reload familiar content the next time you visit those pages. Clearing your cache allows you to remove your search history or any other temporary data.

The process of clearing your cache data is different depending on whether you’re using an iPhone or Android. To clear your Instagram cache on iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to General.
  3. Select iPhone Storage.
  4. Scroll down and open Instagram.
  5. Look for the option to Clear app cache on next launch.
  6. If the option to clear the cache is not available, tap on Delete App. This will uninstall the app as it's the only way to clear your Instagram cache. You can still reinstall the app once you're done.

To clear cache on your Android, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Open Apps & Notifications.
  3. Select the Instagram app.
  4. Tap on Storage.
  5. Select Clear Cache to delete all cached data.

Clearing your cache removed pre-loaded files from your app. If you remove both your cached data and app data, you can also potentially flush out app and browsing cookies too.

Your experience on Instagram is mainly influenced by who you follow. Even though some posts are suggested by Instagram, the content you see is mainly influenced by your engagement.

The new Instagram allows you to change the app icon - here's how to do it

How to switch to a new design
