Instagram started as a photo and video-sharing social platform. After a while, it introduced comments and direct messaging to encourage more interaction between users. These days, Instagram has all the features of a modern messaging app.
You can send text messages, upload photos in your DMs, and even make video calls. You can do it all, whether you want to send out a private message or send notifications in bulk. Check out a few ways the platform allows you to check your messages on any device and a few tricks and workarounds for some pesky privacy issues.
When you log into the app, you’ll notice the number of unread messages. It’s marked in red over the Mail icon. As you browse your unread DMs, you’ll notice that the app lists them from most recent to oldest.
If you’re using an Android device, the process is the same. Unlike other apps, Instagram for iPhone and iOS is basically the same. That includes the wording on various settings and features.
If you don’t have your phone on you, you can always use the browser to check your DMs. Instagram’s official website interface does an excellent job of providing you with a smooth user experience.
When you reply from the desktop browser version of Instagram, you can include emojis and photos from your drive.
Instagram also offers a Windows 10 desktop version of the app. You can use this instead of a browser to manage your profile and read or exchange messages.
Note that you can enable camera and microphone access for PCs and laptops. However, on Windows 10, microphone access is off by default for the Instagram app. You may press the enable button many times without success.
Instead, enter your Windows privacy settings (Win key + I). Select Privacy. Click on the Microphone tab and scroll down until you find the Instagram app. Change the settings to enable the microphone.
Another way to check Instagram on a computer is via an Android emulator, like BlueStacks or Nox. Install either emulator on your OS. Go to the app store and search for Instagram. Once you find the app, install it.
Launch the app, and you can input your account credentials and sign in.
When using an emulator for Instagram, it’ll be like you’re using it on an Android phone; save for the touchscreen if your screen doesn’t support that.
Just keep in mind that it’s an emulator, so it’s not perfect. Certain updates or neglecting to update can cause serious bugs and instabilities. Your app may refuse to open, or it may not work accordingly.
Although most users use the mobile app version of Instagram, the social platform also has a browser alternative. In many ways, it’s similar to the Lite version of Facebook Messenger. It doesn’t have a full range of features, yet it lets you check up on things.
While you can read and send messages, comment, and like pictures, you can’t upload anything from the browser interface.
For that, you need to use the Instagram app.
Just in case you’re new to the platform, let’s also cover the process of sending a DM to someone. Here’s how to start a message thread on Instagram:
You can also start a group chat using Instagram’s messaging feature.
Note that you can only send a group message to people that you follow.
You can send a DM to anyone, but you can’t include random users in your group chat.
Here are more answers to your frequently asked questions.
Yes and no. By default, Instagram enables read receipts. This means that any messages you send on the platform appear with a Seen icon once the recipient reads it. However, people can use a workaround if they want to read messages without the sender knowing it.
It’s possible to do this when you don’t open a DM immediately. While logged into your Instagram account, put your device on Airplane Mode. Reading the message in offline mode doesn’t trigger a read receipt. But, once you relaunch the app, it triggers the read receipt.
There can be many causes for missing DMs. The most common issue is lag, but it can also be a software-related problem. Try to check your DMs on a different device or the browser version of the app.
If you can check your DMs from the browser, then try reinstalling the app on your phone.
Just because someone blocks your account on Instagram doesn’t mean that the messages also disappear. All previously sent messages remain in your inbox unless you manually delete the conversations.
Bring up the DM inbox and type the username of the person who blocked you in the search box. All non-deleted messages should appear.
Since Facebook acquired Instagram, the social media file-sharing platform has embraced the same philosophy. Facebook never allowed its users to turn off read receipts, which now show as profile icons to indicate a read message.
Thus, turning off read receipts for your Instagram account is also impossible. There’s no privacy setting or notification setting that touches on the subject. However, you can read messages without immediately sending a notification to the sender.
While logged in, switch your device to Airplane mode and read the message. Then close the app when you’re done.
When someone you don’t follow sends you a message, it may go to your Message Request folder. This means you won’t get a notification or see the text in your DMs. But you can find it by following these steps:
1. Open Instagram and tap on the DM icon in the upper right corner.
2. Tap Requests under the search bar to the right.
3. Here, you will see any messages that didn’t go to your DM folder.
Do be mindful that some messages in the Requests folder may be scams. Unless the text comes from someone you know, it’s best not to interact with it.
Instagram’s messaging feature has been implemented without a hitch. The system works smoothly and has a very simple and intuitive user interface. The only issue, as far as most users go, is the read-receipt feature.
It can create awkward social situations when you see that someone has read your message, but you don’t get a reply.
It goes the other way around too; if you send a message, but never get a read receipt.
Unfortunately, there’s no privacy setting you can configure to get around this. And even the Airplane Mode trick doesn’t always work right. Besides, this is something you can’t do if you’re using Instagram in your browser and not the app itself.
As far as the read-receipts feature goes, how do you want to see it handled in the future? Would you prefer to have an option to disable it like you can on Twitter? Do you find it useful? Or do you think that no matter what happens, Instagram will always follow Facebook despite what users want?
Let us know your thoughts on the DM system and privacy policies in the comments section below. Tell us if you like having a DM system for Instagram or if you miss the first version of the app that only focused on media sharing, likes, and comments.
You can send direct messages to groups or individuals on Instagram.
Similarly, if someone has sent you a direct message, you would be keen to know how you can access it and send a reply.
Once you have opened your Instagram account, go to your homepage. You will notice the mail icon on the screen’s top right corner. Tap it to go to your Instagram Direct inbox.
When a new message comes, it will show up here. When you see the message icon on the screen’s top right corner, you should notice a number count. That is the number of new messages that have to come to your inbox since you last checked it.
Now, you can have a look at the messages that you have received. The most recent message will appear on the top and the least recent at the bottom of the list. Messages which have not been read yet display a blue dot next to it.
In case you have received too many messages, you can search for a particular message through a search field provided at the top of the page.
You can enter a phrase, keyword, or name of the user in order to search relevant messages in your inbox. To open a message or conversation thread, you need to tap it. There is a message field which you can use to send a reply. You can send text, pictures, GIFs, and more through Instagram’s direct message feature.
There is a camera icon on the right side of every message. You can tap it, take a photo or make a video, and send it as a reply.
To exit your inbox tap the arrow back at the top left corner of your screen, and you will get back to your homepage.
It is possible to receive messages from users who you don’t follow. These messages will appear as message requests and you can choose to either accept or decline them. If you choose to accept it, you can view the message and send a reply as well. If you decline it, the sender will not be able to send you anymore new messages. The user who sent you the message will not know that you viewed it unless you accept the request.
To see your message requests, go to your direct message inbox. At the top of the screen, under the search bar, you will see your message requests in blue on the right side of the screen. If you have message requests, it will say “### Requests”. Click here to view the requests.
Once you open the message, you can click “Decline” or “Allow” to accept or decline the message request.
Unfortunately, Instagram’s web version does not have a direct messaging feature. It is among some of the key features that Instagram currently does not allow on its web version.
However, you can still enjoy all the regular features of Instagram if you have a Windows PC. You can send and receive direct messages including videos and photos. You simply need to download the Instagram app onto your computer to enjoy all the regular features.

There are a lot of abbreviations on Instagram, most of which are far from always clear to new users. Bloggers and shops often use the mysterious acronym DM in their posts. Let's figure out what dm is on Instagram and how and when this abbreviation should be used. nine0005
Content
Like in any other social network, abbreviations are very popular on Instagram.
Previously, the photo network did not have its own service for exchanging personal messages, and the developers “sewn” the Direct messenger to Instagram. Then the abbreviation DM appeared, which stands for direct message, which can literally be translated from English as “direct message”. So DMs are essentially private messages on Instagram. nine0005
Of course, any user can use the abbreviation in their posts and stories. However, most often the DM abbreviation can be seen very often in store accounts, so administrators convey that details about the product and its price can be found by writing a private message. Bloggers can also write DMs in stories (since there are no comments in stories) when they want to know the opinion of subscribers about something, or even in posts, if, for example, they conduct a survey on a rather delicate issue that many do not want to discuss in open comments . The abbreviation can be used as an abbreviation, a hashtag, and even a verb (DM me, which means "write me").

There are several ways to send a user a private message on Instagram.
One way to send a private message on Instagram is from the Direct section. To do this, do the following:
You can send a private message to a user while on their profile page.
For this you need:
In a personal message on Instagram, you can send not only plain text, but also a voice (audio) message. To do this, you need to hold down the microphone icon in the text input line. You can also send an image (for this, you need to click on the icon of a picture with a mountain in the message input field), a GIF sticker (a square emoticon in the message input field), conduct a video chat (indicated by the camera image in the upper right corner). Professional account holders can also create a template for quick replies (an ellipsis icon in the message input field) and flag important contacts (the flag icon in the upper right corner). nine0005
A private message can be sent to any Instagram user, whether it is a former classmate, a well-known blogger or an online store.
To send a message, you do not need to be subscribed to this account.
Important! Messages from people the user doesn't follow are not visible directly in the chat list. In this case, a request for correspondence will be indicated at the top, which can be rejected or accepted.
Instagram has added a sticker "DM Me" or "Message me" to its collection of stickers in stories. It can be added to stories to attract the attention of subscribers.
The "Message me" sticker allows you to send private messages directly from Stories. If earlier you could often see the inscriptions “To make an appointment for a haircut, write to Direct”, “For details on sizes and availability, write to Direct”, now it’s enough to add a sticker. This significantly increases the response of the audience, since earlier a person could be too lazy to go to the user's account and look for direct, or he switched to other stories and simply forgot what he wanted to write.
Now you can write a message without taking any extra steps, and then continue viewing your friends' stories. You can place a sticker not only to sign up for a service. With the help of such a sticker, you can increase the activity of the audience, show readiness for communication and discussion. nine0005
Like other stickers, the "Message me" sticker is located in the sticker attachment menu. To add it to your stories, you need to do the following:
You can add text above the sticker, change its color (multi-colored circle at the top of the screen), size, place it in any part of the screen.
This feature is a relatively recent Instagram update and may not be available to all users.
Another common problem is an outdated version of the application. You can try to log out of your account and log in again or update the version of the smartphone operating system and the Instagram application. If these actions did not help, all that remains is to wait: after a while, the new sticker will become available to all users. nine0005
Stickers are a great help to increase the activity of an existing audience, but to effectively promote an account, you need to increase all indicators, including pure subscribers.
One of the most convenient promotion services is DoSMM. The service works around the clock and does not require installation on a smartphone or computer, but if the user has any difficulties or questions, the technical support of the service is always ready to help him. nine0005
DoSMM takes care of all the promotion work, which allows you to make your Instagram page more popular while its owner is doing what he really likes, for example, taking cool new photos.
Why write a DM on Instagram?
Sometimes subscribers have questions that they don't want to ask in the comments, or they are afraid that the user might not notice them. The DM inscription and sticker communicate openness to communication, moreover, they call for it even those who were not going to write, which helps to increase the activity of the audience. nine0133
Where is the direct on Instagram on the computer?
Private messaging on Instagram can only be done using the smartphone or tablet app. Sending dm from a computer without installing third-party software will not work.
Where to put the stress in the word "direct"?
The word direct, which is pronounced “direct” in the original language, has become so firmly established in life that it is increasingly written in Cyrillic, that is, “direct” and, accordingly, they try to pronounce it in the Russian manner. It is too early to talk about the normative fixing of stress, but in English this word is pronounced with an accent on the second syllable, and in Russian there is a related word "director", also with an accent on the second syllable.
Based on this, experts in the field of the Russian language recommend pronouncing "direct". nine0133

Ask a question
Instagram needs no introduction. This amazing photo sharing app has gradually become one of the most popular social media platforms with its new trendy features. The good news is that many of these features are also available on the web, with one exception - Instagram DMs. nine0005
Yes, you can view your friends' Instagram stories or even search and follow hashtags. You can even post images from the web version. However, you cannot check or send a message. And if you're an avid Instagram fan like me (who has to stare at your desktop most of the day), this can be a huge problem.
Fortunately, all is not lost. There are many solutions in the form of Chrome apps and extensions to help you view and reply to private Instagram messages without leaving your computer. Yes, you read that right, there is no need to open the Instagram app on your smartphones. nine0005
Disclaimer: We are not responsible for any problems that occur after installing these applications and extensions. So proceed with caution and at your own risk.
Viewing Instagram Posts on PC is not rocket science and there are many applications and tools that make it possible. In our case, the IG tool came to the rescue: dm. The name speaks for itself. nine0005
IG: dm Not only does it display all of your Instagram messages, but it also allows you to reply to incoming messages, similar to Facebook Messenger.
Download IG: dm
All you have to do is download and install the app. After that, log in with your username and password, and that's it.
Once the scan is complete, you will see all messages on the left and the message bar on the right. Just click on one and start chatting. nine0005
While IG:dm lets you chat with your followers, it doesn't have all the features of Instagram like GIFs, likes, and the ability to send audio messages.
At the moment you can only exchange images and emoticons, except for standard text. In addition, double-clicking on a message will like it, similar to the function of the phone.
In addition to the above, IG:dm has a number of functions. No, you can search messages and accounts using the search box, or you can resize the DM window. nine0005
However, most of these functions are intended for advanced users. When you upgrade, you can sign in to multiple accounts, use Slack's emoji search, or directly quote chat messages.
All in all IG:dm is a great tool for your PC. It's easy to use and the fact that it directly reproduces the Instagram interface is the cherry on top.
However, please note that sometimes this tool may be slightly slower to respond. Also, you cannot see the message request with this tool. nine0005
It is much easier to view messages in Google Chrome. And the best thing is that you don't need any other setup. A simple stretch does the trick.
The advantage these plugins have over custom applications and tools is that they act like emulators. As a result, you get the same experience as the DM section on your phone, but on a bigger screen.
The most useful extension for me is the direct message for Instagram. As mentioned above, it almost replicates the look and feel of the Instagram app.
Get a direct message for Instagram
Once you add an extension to Chrome, it doesn't need a separate login. If you are logged into your profile, the extension captures your login credentials from your browser. Once you're done, click on the little DM icon in your browser and bam! Hey Instagram. nine0005
Now all you have to do is click on the DM icon and you are ready to start chatting. In addition, you can send hearts and pictures, as well as emoticons. In addition, you may also like old posts.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to send gifs and stickers. In addition, you can also block or report an account from a small window or create a group chat.
Unlike IG:dm, you can also see post requests. Not only that, direct message for Instagram also allows you to allow or deny the request. nine0005
What I liked about the Direct Message for Instagram addon is that it's clean and simple. There are no ads here and you don't need to install any third party emoji sending tools.
Just click the icon when you need to check your private messages and click outside the window when your work is done.
