How to mute someone on Instagram without unfollowing them

Tired of scrolling past endless selfies and stay-at-home challenges but don’t want to risk the awkward consequences of unfollowing someone? Here’s how to mute someone on Instagram without them ever knowing you’ve done it.

If your uni mates are sharing one too many summer throwback from 2019, it can be tempting to reach for the unfollow button. Luckily, there’s another (more temporary) feature you can make use of: the mute button.

Instagram introduced its mute feature in May 2018. Like the mute option on other social media sites, Instagram’s mute button allows you to hide posts or stories belonging to specific accounts from appearing on your feed. Basically, the button lets you take a break from seeing another user’s content without the commitment (or consequences) of hitting the unfollow or block buttons.

“When you mute an account, you can still see posts on their profile page and get notified about comments or posts you’re tagged in. ” explains Instagram. “The accounts you mute will not be aware that you’ve muted them. You can always unmute an account to get their posts back in your feed.”

So, how do you mute someone on Instagram without them finding out?

How to mute someone on Instagram

Muting an account’s posts won’t block you from seeing them entirely. You’ll still be able to lurk on their profile page and be tagged under posts – you just won’t see any updates on your main feed.

How to mute someone’s posts on Instagram:

  • Open Instagram
  • Tap on the search icon
  • Enter the name of the account you’d like to mute in the search bar and tap on their profile
  • Tap ‘Following’
  • Tap ‘Mute’
  • Toggle ‘Posts’ on

How to mute Instagram Stories

Muting stories is a little different to muting posts. Because stories are considered more temporary than posts, some users will update them throughout the day – giving you all the more motive to hit that mute button when they get too much.

Muting an account’s story will send them to the end of your story feed, get rid of the colourful ring when they update their story and prevent their pics and videos from automatically playing when you tap through the stories you do follow.

You can use both of the above methods to mute a user’s story. Simply toggle ‘Stories’ on or tap ‘Mute Story’ to hide stories from your feed. You can also mute story’s directly from the story section of your feed.

How to mute stories on Instagram:

  • Open Instagram
  • Swipe across the top of your feed to find the account you’d like to mute
  • Tap and hold the account’s icon
  • Tap ‘Mute’
  • Tap ‘Mute Story’

How to hide someone's Instagram Posts & Stories without unfollowing

Christian Zibreg ∙ Updated March 11, 2022

Did you know you can hide anyone’s Instagram posts, Stories, or both from your feed without unfollowing them and without them knowing you muted them? This way, you can keep your Instagram feed clean, and the person won’t even be notified that you have muted their account.

Hide any Instagram account’s posts or stories

As an alternative to unfollowing, muting allows Instagram users to mute someone’s posts, Stories, or both without unfollowing them. Here are the various ways to do that.

From your Instagram feed

  1. Open Instagram and tap the three dots button next to an account’s post.
  2. Tap Hide.
  3. Tap Mute [username].
  4. Now, choose Mute posts to filter out an account’s post from your feed or choose Mute posts and story to mute both posts and stories from that account.

From the story section

  1. Open Instagram and tap the story of an account you want to mute.
  2. Tap the three dots button from the top right.
  3. Tap Mute.
  4. Choose Mute story or Mute story and posts.

Mute Stories quickly with a press

  1. Open the Instagram app and press and hold a story thumbnail from the top.
  2. Tap Mute.
  3. Choose Mute story or Mute story and posts.

From the person’s Instagram profile

  1. Inside the Instagram app, go to a person’s profile.
  2. Tap Following.
  3. Tap Mute.
  4. Enable the toggle to mute Posts, Stories, or both.

When you mute someone, they won’t know you’ve done so. You can still view the profiles and posts from anyone you’ve muted on their profile page. Additionally, you will continue getting push notifications from any muted users who have tagged you in posts or commented on one of your posts or stories.

Unmute posts and stories for an account on Instagram

Follow these steps if you change your mind and want to start seeing posts and stories again from the account you once muted:

  1. Go to the person’s Instagram profile. To find them, you can use the search box and type their name or username.
  2. Tap Following.
  3. Tap Mute.
  4. Turn off the toggle for Posts and Stories to unmute them.

Since the advent of Instagram, if a user wanted to stop seeing a certain person's posts, they had to unfollow them. This option is a rather radical solution, completely breaking the connection between people. However, now messages from some accounts can simply be hidden from the Instagram feed, and the hidden user will not know about it. nine0019 You will not see his messages and Stories (Stories) while maintaining a subscription .

How to hide all messages and Stories of some users in your Instagram feed without unsubscribing

Due to numerous requests from users, Instagram has launched the "Restrict" feature . This function allows you to remove messages, publications or stories (this can be selected separately) of the user from the news feed. However, more than doesn't have to unfollow friend at the risk of offending him.

To hide a user's posts, simply click "…" in the top right corner of their profile. Then touch item "Restrict access" and confirm the action by pressing the link button "Close" .

What's the difference between Limit and Unfollow on Instagram?

The meaning of option "Restrict" is that you can hide messages and stories from certain users without them. They will still think that you see all their posts. This is the main difference between "Hide" and "Unfollow" , since whether a person has unsubscribed from you can be easily checked. nine0003

In addition to the above differences, other users will not be able to see comments left by a restricted user on your posts.

In addition, a chat with this Instagram user will be automatically moved to chat requests, so he will not see if you have read his messages in direct.

How to block someone who blocked you on Instagram?

By SEOJedi Read 6 min Views 114k. Posted

Hello everyone! I recently encountered a problem of this nature: “How to block someone who has already blocked you on Instagram?”. The client called me and identified such a problem - There is a user who blocked us, respectively, we cannot find him in the search, he is not displayed there for us. But I would not want him to climb our account, we need to add him to the block too, can you help? With the help of special programs, for money, respectively. nine0010 As you understand, the last remark is the most important in this whole tirade 🙂 . So, how to block a user who has blocked you on Instagram.

Anyone can have such a problem. For example, a bad person writes comments and immediately blocks you. Such comments are not visible to you, but other subscribers and Instagram users see them perfectly. To remove them, you need to block such a villain in response. If you know the exact name (login) of this account, then when you log into this account, it says “User not found”. In the event that you have previously corresponded with this person, then you can go to direct and enter his nickname in the search. If the correspondence is not deleted, a dialog will be displayed. There you need to go into it, then click on the profile photo at the top to go to Details, and then "Block user". This is the easiest and most commonly known way. But if there were no correspondence in the direct, then it is not applicable, as in the case of my client. nine0003

First of all, I went to the Instagram Help Center to see what they write about blocking users. I really liked the phrase:

People you have blocked will still be able to see your comments and likes on the posts of public accounts or accounts they follow.

Went into the client's account and asked him to show those accounts that the person who blocked him could like or comment on. I thought that from there it would be possible to log into the account and block it, but figs there. If you are blocked on Instagram, then you do not see any activity of this user who blocked you from your account. nine0003

Okay, there is one more, untested method that turned out to be effective.

Everything turned out to be very simple! The method works if you have Instagram promotion software with the right functionality! On paid services, as a rule, there is such functionality. I use Instaplus.me, so I'll tell you everything using his example.

If you are not a user, then register using the link and get 5 days of free use of Instaplus.me for 1 Instagram account, which is what we need for this operation. nine0003

There we add our account, which was blocked by the one we want to block in response. I recommend using the "Home proxy" functionality from Instaplus so that there are no problems with cyclic verification. Next, I will describe the whole process in more detail, because a large number of letters of this nature are received:

  • I did everything as written, but Instagram itself does not display a person in “blocked accounts”. What did she do wrong?
  • nine0105 Good afternoon! It does not work, although I did everything clearly according to the instructions. How to be?

In order not to waste your time and mine on correspondence in WhatsApp, I offer step-by-step instructions with pictures and descriptions for them 🙂 .

We add it here!

The next step is to add a list of accounts. In our case, there will be only one attacker account in the list. Click "Create a task", select the "My lists" tab and below select the type of list - Block list and click on the green Create button. nine0003

A new field will open in which you will need to specify the name of the list and enter the accounts you want to block in response.
