How to Disable Your Active Status on Facebook and Facebook Messenger

Facebook is the quintessential social network, but you may not always feel like being social every time you log in to your Facebook account. Whether it's because you don't have the energy or the time to engage with friends, you do have the option to browse Facebook without anyone knowing you're online.


The way to achieve this is by turning off your "Active Status," which can be done within the Facebook mobile app or on the Facebook website. The same global setting also lives in the Facebook Messenger app, allowing you to check your latest messages without friends jostling for your attention while you do. Keep reading to learn how it's done.

Disable Active Status on Facebook Website

  1. In a browser, log in to Facebook and then click the Messenger icon the top-right corner of the page.
  2. Click the ellipsis (three dots) icon at the top of the chats window.
  3. Click Active Status.
  4. Toggle off the switch next to Active Status: ON to disable it.

Note that there are a couple of additional options in the Active Status window that allow you to appear as active for some friends, but not others, and vice versa. Simply tap the edit button to select which friends you want to include in either list.

Disable Active Status in Facebook App

  1. Launch the Facebook app and tap the menu tab (three lines) in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  2. Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy to expand this section.
  3. Tap Settings.

  4. Scroll down, and under "Audience and visibility," tap Active Status.
  5. Toggle off the switch next to Show when you're active.

Disable Active Status in Facebook Messenger

  1. Launch the Facebook Messenger app and tap your circular profile picture in the top-left corner of the screen.
  2. Tap Active Status.
  3. Toggle off the switch next to Show when you're active.

Note that when you turn off your Active Status in Facebook or Facebook Messenger, you won't see when your friends and connections are active or recently active either.

  • When your active status is turned off, you will appear offline even when you're online.
  • You can also choose to appear offline only for certain people that you select.

Facebook may be responsible for putting the word "social" in social media, but there are times when you don't want — or don't have time — to engage with friends.

If you want to log into Facebook without your friends knowing you're online, you can easily turn off your "active status" so you appear offline.

There are three different places where you can control your active status: on Facebook in a web browser, in the Facebook mobile app, and in the Facebook Messenger mobile app.

How to turn off active status on Facebook in a web browser

To turn off active status and appear offline on Facebook:

1. Open Facebook in a browser and log in, if you're not already.

2. Click the circular Messenger icon in the top-right corner.

4. Click Turn off Active Status in the drop-down menu.

Note: You can also do this by clicking the Messenger icon in the top-right corner and clicking See all in Messenger at the bottom of the drop-down menu. How to turn off active status in the Facebook mobile app

1. Open the Facebook app on your phone.

How to turn off active status on Facebook

Here's how you can turn off the active status indicator on Facebook. Once you do this, no one will be able to determine when you go online or go offline!

In the Facebook mobile app

Disabling active status in your Facebook mobile app will only remove your active indicator in the app. Your active status will still show up in the Messenger app.

To disable Facebook active status, launch the Facebook app and log in with your credentials. Now tap the hamburger menu in the top right corner of the app.

Under Settings & Privacy, select Settings.

In the "Privacy" subsection, select "Active Status". Turn off the setting.

In the Messenger app

It's easy to hide your active status in the Messenger app. Hiding your active status will prevent Facebook from adding a green dot next to your name, and will also prevent you from appearing in the Active section of the Messenger app.

To turn off being active in the Facebook Messenger app, launch the app and tap your profile picture in the top left corner.

Now in the Profile section, click on Active Status. Turn off the setting.

On the Facebook site

You can disable your active status on the Facebook site with ease. When you do this, your active status will also disappear from the built-in messaging feature.

To turn off being active on the Facebook website, go to the website and click the three dots next to Contacts. Now click "Disable Active Status".

Now you can choose whether you want to appear inactive to certain people or to everyone. When you're done, click Save.

Why do you want to disable your active status?

Well, let's put it this way. Your active status indicates that you are currently using the Facebook app. So if someone sends you a message and you don't reply, it will be obvious that you received the message but chose to ignore it.

Turning off your active status also prevents people on your friends list from talking to you and expecting immediate replies. Now you can safely browse Facebook!

Important!
