How do I send GIFs in WhatsApp on iPhone?
WhatsApp is one of our favourite ways to keep in touch with friends around the world. Sharing messages and photos for free is always welcome, and now you can also include GIFs alongside Apple’s Live photos and short video clips. In this quick tutorial, we’ll show you how to easily add a splash of action to your WhatsApp conversations.
On a related note, you may be interested to read our collection of brilliant Live Photo tips, and our tutorial showing How to read WhatsApp messages without the sender knowing.
Sending Giphy GIFs on WhatsApp
The easiest way to send GIFs in WhatsApp is to use the built-in GIF function, first introduced to the service in 2017. The function allows you to search the vast library of GIFs available on Giphy and send animated clips without having to save them on your iPhone first.
To search for a Giphy GIF to send, tap the Stickers icon to the right of the text entry field in your WhatsApp chat. At the bottom of the window, tap the GIF icon. From here you can browse from a number of preset categories, or if you’ve got a specific GIF in mind, tap the magnifying glass in the bottom-left to keyword search.
Once you’ve found the perfect GIF, tap it and then tap the send icon to share it with your friends.
Converting videos to GIFs
WhatsApp already allows you to send existing videos but you can also convert them to GIFs if you wish. The only restriction on this is that the GIF can’t be longer than six seconds in length, so videos exceeding that duration won’t offer the conversion option.
Sending a video
To send a video you need to start a message then select the plus icon in the bottom left corner of the screen. A pop-up menu appears from which you need to select Photo & Video Library. Now select any video and press the Send button (a blue circle with a paper aeroplane inside).
Sending a video as a GIF
If you prefer to send the file as a GIF then follow the same steps as above but be sure to select a video that’s no longer than six seconds in length. When you’ve chosen one you’ll see an option just beneath the timeline at the top of the screen which has a camera highlighted in blue with GIF to the right of it.
Tapping on the GIF option will immediately start the video playing on a loop. By dragging either end of the timeline bar you can set the start and stop points of the clip. There are also options across the top for cropping, adding emojis, text, or drawing on the image. When you’re happy with your creation, tap the Send button and you’re done.
Sending Live Photos
Owners of an iPhone 6S, 6S Plus or later can also send their Live photos to friends on WhatsApp. They’ll need to be converted to GIFs first though so that users of other smartphones will be able to open them.
To do this follow the steps above for sending a video but when you locate the Live photo press hard on it so that it pops out. Slide upwards and you’ll see a menu appear which includes the option to Select as GIF.
Select this and then you’ll be able to include it in your message.
Sending existing GIFs
Over time it’s possible that you’ll accrue a number of GIFs in your camera roll due to them being included in messages you’ve received from other people. These are very easy to attach to new messages thanks to a dedicated GIF search feature.
To find GIFs start a new message in WhatsApp then press the plus icon in the bottom left corner, select Photo & Video Library, then in the bottom left corner you’ll see the Search icon with GIF next to it.
Tap this and you’ll be presented with a list of the available GIFs. Select one and then you’ll have access to the same editing tools that include the start and finish points, cropping, and annotation. Tap the send button when you’re finished and within moments your friends will be enjoying your video vignette.
Sending GIFs from the web
If you’ve found a GIF online that you want to include in a message then that’s easy to do as well. You can use dedicated sites such as Giphy or just look for them on social media feeds or through the normal web searches.
When you find one you like, press and hold the screen until you see an option to Copy the image. Do this then go to WhatsApp, start a new message, then tap and hold the text field until the Paste option appears. Tap this and you should see the GIF appear, complete with the editing tools we covered previously. Make your amends and then dispatch it forthwith to your chums.
If you’d like to send GIFs out through other means, take a look at How to send GIFs on iPhone, which is a broader tutorial.

How to send animated GIFs via WhatsApp
Depending on the variant of the WhatsApp application used to access the messaging system, different approaches are taken to send animated GIFs. Let's consider in order how to solve the problem voiced in the title of this material through the messenger clients operating in the Android, iOS and Windows environment.
Android
WhatsApp users for Android have access to the widest list of methods, compared to those adapted for work in other operating systems, that can be used to show your interlocutor a picture that comes to life when you open it in a chat. nine0004
Option 1: Tenor Library
One of the most significant innovations since the existence of the messenger from the point of view of many of its users has been the ability to select and send GIFs from extensive web directories (in the case of the "green robot" - Tenor ), available directly in WhatsApp applications. Here's how it works on Android:
- Open WhatsApp on your Android device and go to the dialog or group chat where you want to send the animation. nine0020 Click on the icon "Smiley" located on the right side of the field "Enter text" . Then select the icon "GIF" at the very bottom of the panel displayed on the screen, which will open up an area with "live" pictures available for sending.
- Next, find an animation suitable for demonstrating to your interlocutor by scrolling through the list displayed by the messenger.
Or tap the Magnifying glass icon in the bottom corner of the GIF panel, and then enter the search term you think matches the image you are looking for in field "Search in Tenor" .
- Once you've found a suitable animation in the Tenor library, tap on its thumbnail, which will take you to full screen view. Here you can make sure that the found "live" picture is exactly what you need, and if you wish "Add a signature" to the shipment.
- To instantly send a "live" picture to the chat, tap the round button, which depicts a paper airplane at the bottom right of the screen. Then it remains only to wait a little for the delivery of the message to the addressee. nine0023
Option 2: Gallery
If you need to transfer a GIF stored in the memory of your Android device via WhatsApp, the easiest way is to proceed as follows.
- Launch WhatsApp for Android and open a chat (group) with the recipient(s) of the animated picture present in your device's storage. Tap on the button located on the right side of the text message input field "Paperclip" . In the menu that appears for selecting the type of data attached to the message, press "Gallery" .
- Going to one of the albums displayed on the screen, find the GIF file to be sent (there is a corresponding mark on the pictures of the desired type) and click on its preview.
- The next screen that opens provides the ability to overlay one or more effects on top of the animation (use the panel located in the upper right corner) and "Add caption . .." . Transform the picture, if you wish, and then click on the round green button "Submit" bottom right.
- Almost any GIF animation is characterized by a small volume, so its delivery via WhatsApp is very fast.
Option 3: Third-party application
The following method of transferring animated images from the device's memory via WhatsApp allows you not to open the messenger for sending on purpose, to transfer several files and not to the only addressee at the same time. In this case, it is enough to call the function integrated into Android "Share" , which is possible from almost any application that can somehow interact with the files of the type of application in question, for example, file managers and "viewers" of images. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the principle in question, we will use the "Explorer" Google Files .
Download file manager for Android Google Files from Play Market
- Open the file manager for Android and then go to the folder containing the GIF file sent via WhatsApp. nine0023
- Highlight the animated image you are sending by long-pressing on the name of its source file or preview. If you need to send several gifs at the same time, use short taps to check the thumbnails of all the animated pictures you plan to send.
- Click on the Share icon , which, in the case of the application in question, is located at the top right of the screen. Next, find the icon "WhatsApp" in the displayed menu "Send..." and click on it.
- In the messenger that starts automatically, specify the recipient of the animation by highlighting its name by short tapping on it. If there are multiple recipients of the GIF, mark them all in the same way. After selecting the desired contacts, click on the round button with an arrow pointing to the right located at the bottom of the screen.
- As a result of the above steps, the screen for editing the picture and adding a caption to it will open. Swipe the animation as desired and then press "Send" .
- That's all - after a short time, the graphic message will be delivered to its destination, and each recipient will be able to view the animation and appreciate it.
Option 4: Create a GIF in WhatsApp
WhatsApp developers have implemented a rather interesting feature in its mobile clients that distinguishes this messenger from others. So, you have the opportunity to create a GIF from a short (up to 6 seconds) video recorded using the device’s camera, as well as get a GIF file by cutting and converting a fragment of the video in the Android device’s memory into the appropriate format. nine0004
Camera
- Enter a conversation or group chat with the recipients of the animation you're creating. On the right in the field "Enter a message" click on the button "Camera" .
- Next, record a short video by holding the "Shutter" button to fix the surrounding reality and releasing it at the end of the procedure. In general, the duration of the recording should not exceed 6 seconds, but if the video turns out to be longer, it’s not scary. nine0023
- At the top of the next screen there is a video sequence panel - by moving its left and right borders, select a fragment that will be further converted into an animated picture. Be guided, including by the duration counter - the maximum duration of the fragment is 6 seconds.
- Move the "switch" located under the panel with the video sequence on the right to position "GIF" . Next, if desired, apply effects over the animation, add a caption.
- After completing the creation of a "live" picture, click on the button "Send" at the bottom right - the content you created will immediately move to the chat.
Finished video
- In a chat with the recipient of a GIF that has not yet been created, click on the Paperclip icon in the message input field, and then select Gallery in the message attachment type selection menu that opens.
- Find the video you want to convert to GIF, tap its preview. nine0023
- Next, trim the video loaded into the messenger by shifting the boundaries of the panel displaying the video sequence until the duration counter under it shows 0:06 or less. Click "GIF" on the switch that appears below the video sequence as a result of trimming the recording.
- Optionally, edit the resulting animation using the tools offered in the upper right corner of the screen and add a signature to the generated multimedia message. When you have finished creating the gif, tap on the button with the paper airplane and it will immediately be transferred to the chat. nine0023
iOS
iPhone users and users of WhatsApp for iOS, as well as Android smartphone owners, can choose from several GIF sources and transfer methods to showcase the type of content in question to their contacts.
Option 1: GIPHY library
In order to provide quick animation search and transfer via messenger, WhatsApp for iOS users are given access to a web directory of GIFs called GIPHY . To implement the ability to send GIFs from the specified library, you need to proceed as follows.
- Open WhatsApp on iPhone, chat with the recipient of the animated image.
- Touch the send emoji button - located on the right in the text message input field, a piece of paper with a folded corner. In the area displayed at the bottom of the screen, tap "GIF" .
- Using the button "Search" in the lower right corner of the panel displaying a preview of the gifs available for sending and entering a query, nine0002
or just scroll up the list of pictures to find the right animation.
- Tap on the thumbnail of a "live" picture in the catalog - this will take you to the screen where you can view it in more detail, and also supplement it to some extent. Optionally, using the tools from the list displayed in the upper right corner, apply effects to the picture. Add a caption to the generated multimedia message.
- When you have finished creating a graphic message, click on the round button with the image of a paper airplane - this action initiates an instant sending of the animation to the recipient. nine0023
Option 2: iPhone storage
If the GIF that you want to send to another person via WhatsApp was saved in the iOS app Photos , that is, it exists in the iPhone storage, to solve the problem from the title of this article proceed as follows.
- Launch WhatsApp on iPhone. Go to a conversation with the recipient of the animation or open a group chat if you want to share the GIF with several messenger participants at the same time. nine0002
- Click on the “+” located to the left of the message entry field to call up a menu for selecting the types of data attached to the message. Touch Photo/Video in the displayed list.
- Find the WhatsApp animation in the Gallery and tap on its preview. By the way, you can distinguish a GIF from a regular image here by the presence of a corresponding mark on the thumbnail of the picture.
- If necessary, enter the text accompanying the GIF in field "Add description..." . And you can also use one of the tools at the top right of the screen to apply various effects to the image.
- Upon completion of the preparation of the graphic message, click on the button "Send" , and then wait for the end of the process of transferring the "live" picture to the interlocutor (s) in the messenger.
Option 3: Third Party Program
Third party tools (file managers, image editors, cloud clients, etc.) can be used on iPhone for various file manipulations, including GIF format. If you use such software, then you can use the function provided in iOS 9 to send animation via WhatsApp0196 "Share" . The following describes how it works in terms of solving the problem from the title of the article using the Documents file manager from Readdle as an example.
Download Documents by Readdle from the Apple App Store
- Launch File Explorer and navigate to the folder containing the GIF image.
- Touch the three dots located in the area with the animation thumbnail or next to the name of its file name to bring up a menu of possible actions. Select "Share" in the opened list of functions.
- Find "WhatsApp" , scrolling if necessary, the displayed panel for selecting services and programs to the left, tap on the messenger icon.
If the desired icon is not in the above panel, select it "More" . Next, in the list that appears, activate the display of the WhatsApp icon using the switch located next to it and tap "Done" .
- On the screen of the messenger launched as a result of the previous paragraph of this instruction, select the contact to whose address the animated picture will be sent. And you can also mark several recipients by tapping on the checkboxes next to their names. After highlighting all recipients, press "Next" at the bottom right.
- The next screen, already familiar to us from the methods described above for transferring GIF files via WhatsApp from an iPhone, provides the ability to supplement the animation with effects, add a caption to it and, finally, send it to a chat. nine0023
- As a result of the above actions, the messenger will disappear from the iPhone screen, you will return to the Documents program, and the GIF will be sent to the addressee(s).
Option 4: Create a GIF in WhatsApp
As mentioned in the first part of this article, WhatsApp provides the means to create a GIF animation by the user himself. Without leaving the messenger on iPhone anywhere, you can literally “on the fly” generate and send an animated picture to your contact very quickly, using a short video recorded by the device’s camera or a ready-made video file from the iPhone storage as the basis for creating it. nine0004
Camera
- After chatting with the recipient of the "live" picture created as a result of the following steps in this instruction, open the iPhone camera by tapping its icon on the right next to the message text entry field.
- Press the circle in the middle of the lower part of the screen and, while holding it, record a short video - fixing the lens on the surrounding reality will stop when you stop pressing the specified button.
- After creating a video, "cut off" its "extra" fragments from the beginning and / or end, using the panel located at the top of the screen that opens, which demonstrates the video sequence. nine0196 “Duration” of a GIF with the considered method of obtaining it is limited to 6 seconds, and the fact that this condition is met will be indicated by the switch “Video / GIF” displayed under the panel with the video sequence, which will be displayed under the panel with the video sequence.
- Tap "GIF" on the radio button described above, apply effects to the animation if desired, and fill in the field "Add caption" .
- Upon completion of creating a "live" picture, click on the button initiating its sending in the lower right corner of the screen and then wait for the delivery of the multimedia message you created to the addressee. nine0023
Finished video
- After opening the correspondence with the recipient of the GIF image, click on the button "+" , which is located next to the text message input field on the left. In the menu that opens, select "Photo / Video" .
- Find the video intended to be the basis for the GIF and tap on its preview.
- By dragging the borders of the panel showing the storyboard of the movie at the top of the screen, determine the beginning and end of the fragment to be converted to animation. As in the case described above, the part of the video suitable for the operation should be short, and the switch 9 displayed under the video sequence on the right will tell you that the required duration fits into the possible frames.0196 "Video/GIF" .
- Set the switch to "GIF" , add effects and write a description. Next, the resulting animation can be sent to your contact - tap on the round button with the airplane, and then wait a bit for the message to be delivered to your interlocutor's WhatsApp.
Windows
From a computer, that is, through the WhatsApp application for Windows duplicating what is happening in the mobile versions of the messenger, it is possible to send animated pictures, but here it is stated that the number of available methods for performing the procedure is much smaller than in Android and iOS, and there are also certain restrictions. nine0004
Option 1: Library
As conceived by the creators of WhatsApp, the main method of demonstrating gifs to your interlocutors in the messenger is to select a sender from those offered in the catalog service of this type of content, which is very easy to implement from a PC:
- Run WhatsApp on your computer, open a chat , where you plan to send the animation.
- Click on the button made in the form of a smiley next to the area of the program window intended for entering a test message. nine0002
- Click on the third button "GIF" in the lower right row of the displayed panel.
- Navigating through categories that combine groups of animated pictures by topic and scrolling through the list of thumbnails,
or using the search field,
find a suitable "live" image and click on it.
- If necessary, accompany the gif with text by writing it in the field "Add a caption ..." , and then click on the round button "Send" .
- As a result, the selected GIF animation will be sent to WhatsApp to your interlocutor.
Option 2: GIF from a PC disk
As for GIF files downloaded from various sources or created by the user and saved on a PC disk, the ability to send them is, in fact, not implemented by the developers of the WhatsApp client for Windows. It will not work here to achieve the effect when the picture “comes to life” in the interlocutor’s messenger, and the only way to still transfer the animation is to send it as a file. nine0004
- Open WhatsApp for Windows and chat with the recipient of the GIF placed on your PC.
