There are good marketing reasons to have a Facebook profile with the Follow button activated. If you already have lots of Facebook friends who are more like potential customers or clients, and you haven’t taken the time to create a business page (and probably won’t), this approach is for you!

Here’s how to turn on the Follow button on your personal profile:

  1. Click the down arrow in the upper-right corner of Facebook.

    A drop-down menu appears.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Click Followers on the left sidebar.

  4. Select Everybody from the drop-down menu next to the Who Can Follow Me section.

  5. Adjust the settings to your liking for Follower Comments and Notifications.

Enabling the Follow button is optional. You can enjoy a profile and share with only friends and family; you don’t have to turn on the Follow button.

But a profile’s Follow system offers these benefits:
  • After someone follows you, that person sees your Public updates in their News Feed. People may also discover your profile through the People to Follow box on the right side of their News Feed or through their friends’ News Feed stories.

  • Followers can share your Public posts, which broadcasts your post and profile to a larger audience.

  • You can have an unlimited number of followers (no more 5,000-friend limit).

  • You're still able to block potential followers by adjusting your Privacy Settings Block List.

  • You can connect with people on Facebook who prefer subscribing to a business page to liking it.

  • When your Follow button is open, anyone who requests to be your friend automatically becomes a follower unless you block them. You know they’re getting your public updates; you don’t have to friend them unless you want to also get their updates.

  • When you unfriend someone, they remain a follower unless you block them.

  • You can unfollow a friend. You are still friends, but you do not receive their updates in your News Feed.

  • Personal profiles get more exposure in the News Feed due to Facebook’s News Feed algorithm. You have a better chance of being seen if you’re also using your personal profile to post about your business.

For more information about the Follow features, see Facebook’s Help section.

How to Add a Follow Button on Facebook

Are you an influencer or an individual on Facebook and you want to add the follow button?

Or maybe you want to remove the “Add friend” button because you don’t want people to add you as a friend.

Many people have trouble with adding a follow button because it’s not enabled by default.

To enable it, you need to change a couple of your privacy settings.

Otherwise, the follow button will not show up on your profile.

Basically, the follow button allows the public to follow you.

When someone follows you, your public posts will be shown in your news feed.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to add a follow button on your Facebook profile.

How to add a follow button on Facebook

To add a follow button on Facebook, you need to set the “Who can send you friend requests?” privacy setting to “Friends of friends”.

You also need to set the “Who Can Follow Me” privacy setting to public.

After you’ve changed both of the privacy settings, your Facebook profile will have a follow button.

When someone selects the follow button, they will be able to see your public posts on your news feed.

However, you need to be 18 and above to have the follow button.

If you’re below the age of 18, make sure to change your age on Facebook to 18 or above.

Otherwise, you won’t have access to the follow button on Facebook.

To change your age on Facebook, navigate to your profile > About > Contact and Basic Info > Birth Date > Edit.

Here are 3 steps to add a follow button to your Facebook profile:

  1. Step 1: Set “Who can send you friend requests?” to “Friends of friends”
  2. Step 2: Set “Who Can Follow Me” to “Public”
  3. Step 3: View your profile as a visitor

Step 1: Set “Who can send you friend requests?” to “Friends of friends”

To begin with, open Facebook on your mobile device.

You can also use Facebook on a desktop, but the screenshots in this guide are taken from the mobile app of Facebook.

Hence, the user interface will be different.

Once you’re on Facebook, tap on the menu icon on the bottom navigation bar.

Scroll down the menu until you find the “Settings & Privacy” tab.

Tap on the “Settings & Privacy” tab to expand it.

Once the tab is expanded, you’ll see multiple options including “Settings”, “Privacy shortcuts”, “Your time on Facebook”, and more.

Tap on “Settings” to open the settings page.

After you’ve tapped on “Settings”, you’ll land on the settings page.

On the settings page, you’ll see multiple headers including “Account Settings”, “Security”, “Privacy”, and more.

Scroll down the page until you find the “Privacy” header.

Under the “Privacy” header, tap on “Privacy settings” to go to your privacy settings.

On the privacy settings page, you’ll be able to edit your privacy settings such as who can send you friend requests, who can see your friends list, and so on.

On the privacy settings page, you’ll see three headers including “Privacy shortcuts”, “Your activity”, and “How people can find and contact you”.

Scroll down the page until you reach the “How people can find and contact you” header.

The “How people can find and contact you” header is located at the bottom of the page.

Once you’ve found the header, tap on the privacy setting that says, “Who can send you friend requests?”.

There are two options for the “Who can send you friend requests?” privacy setting including “Everyone” and “Friends of friends”.

“Everyone” means that everyone will be able to send you a friend request on Facebook.

“Friends of friends” means that only the friends of your friends can send you a friend request on Facebook.

By default, the “Who can send you friend requests?” privacy setting is set to “Everyone”.

For the follow button to show up on your profile, you need to change the “Who can send you friend requests?” privacy setting from “Everyone” to “Friends of friends”.

Select the “Friends of friends” option and tap on the back icon to go back.

Step 2: Set “Who Can Follow Me” to “Public”

The next privacy setting that you want to change is the “Who Can Follow Me” setting.

The “Who Can Follow Me” setting is located in “Public posts”.

Under the Privacy header, tap on “Public posts”.

The “Public posts” page is where you can control who can follow you and comment on your public posts.

Once you’re on the “Public posts” page, you’ll see a “Who Can Follow Me” privacy setting.

This setting allows you to control who can follow you on Facebook.

There are two options for the “Who Can Follow Me” privacy setting including “Public” and “Friends”.

By default, “Who Can Follow Me” is set to “Friends”.

To allow others to follow you, you need to change the setting from “Friends” to “Public”.

Select the “Public” option to allow everyone to follow you on Facebook.

This will allow others to follow your public posts (similar to the “Follow” button on Instagram).

Step 3: View your profile as a visitor

The final step is to check if there’s a follow button on your Facebook profile.

Now that you’ve changed your privacy settings, your profile should have the “Follow button”.

To check it, navigate to your Facebook profile by tapping on the profile icon on the bottom navigation bar.

Once you’re on your profile, tap on the three dots next to the “Add Story” button.

After you’ve tapped on the three dots, you’ll land on the profile settings page.

On the profile settings page, you’ll see multiple options including “Edit Profile”, “Account Status”, “Archive”, and more.

Under the “Archive” option, you’ll see an option that says “View as”.

Tap on the “View as” option to view your Facebook profile as a visitor.

After you’ve tapped on “View as”, you’ll view your Facebook profile as a visitor.

This time, instead of having the “Add friend” button, you’ll see a “Follow” button.

Everyone that views your profile will now be able to follow you on Facebook by tapping on the “Follow” button.

Congrats, you’ve successfully learned how to add a “Follow” button on Facebook!

Conclusion

Allowing people to follow you on Facebook is important, especially if you’re an influencer.

This will allow your posts to be seen by other people.

If you don’t add the “Follow” button on your profile, people who are not your friends on Facebook will not be able to see your public posts on their news feed.

Adding the “Follow” button will allow others to see your posts on their news feeds.

This will increase your public posts’ reach, views, and engagement.

Convert friends to followers on Facebook

In social networks, such categories of users as friends and followers are to some extent one and the same thing, and at the same time they are completely different categories of users. Experts recommend not overloading your personal profile with an overly “bloated” friend feed. It is much better to have more followers than friends. Therefore, we will figure out what the essence of these two categories of users on Facebook is, and we will also figure out how you can convert friends into subscribers.

  • So what's the difference?
  • How to invite friends to the page
  • Useful information
  • Increase the number of subscribers

So what's the difference?

Initially, the "Friends" category was provided on Facebook in order for the user to highlight people with whom he personally knows and with whom he communicates not only on the Internet. Users from one friend feed can comment on publications, tag each other in photos and in event announcements. They also see each other's whereabouts and are even able to create a joint page with a friendship story.

When a user adds a new account to his friend feed, he automatically becomes a subscriber to the content posted on the friend's profile. But if desired, this subscription is easy to remove without compromising friendship.

Subscriber - user status that is suitable for a person who is interested in the content posted on a particular account. Many components of the functionality available to friends are not available to subscribers, but they, in principle, do not need it. However, the user may, if desired, provide subscribers with the opportunity to comment on their publications.

The user has both friends and followers in his personal profile. As for Facebook pages, they can only have subscribers.

How to invite friends to the page

Making a friend a subscriber is quite simple. If this or that user is not your personal acquaintance, and you are sure that this action will not offend anyone, then the user is simply removed from friends, leaving him a subscription to your content. However, for accounts with the maximum or almost maximum content of the friend feed (it is permissible to have up to 5 thousand friends on Facebook), this process will certainly be very long and very laborious.

Therefore, it is better to invite friends to your page. You can do this as follows:

  1. On your page, click on the ellipsis next to the “Share” option.

  1. Select "Invite Friends" from the drop-down menu.

  1. Select the friends you want to see as page subscribers.

As a result, you will get the following:

  • the audience will expand;
  • in the title of the page you will save the name of the profile;
  • make your friends subscribers of the page;
  • you can transfer selected photos and videos from your personal account to the page;
  • you will have a page, but your personal profile will not go anywhere.

Attention! It was previously possible to convert a personal Facebook profile to a page, but after updating the social network, this option is no longer available. Therefore, the page will have to be created separately.

Useful information

To be in the friend feed of another user, you must send him a corresponding request, and the user must confirm it. That is, friendship on Facebook, as in life, is the result of the mutual consent of two people.

You can subscribe to a page unilaterally, and this process does not require the consent of the page owner.

Increase the number of subscribers

You need to open the "Subscribe" button in the profile of the page and provide users with the opportunity to follow the life of the page and, if desired, be added to the subscribers. For this:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. In the left column, click Public Posts.
  3. Find the option "Who can follow me" and select "Available to everyone" in its settings.

As a result of these actions, the "Subscribe" button is activated, located in the lower right corner of the cover. In the same section, you can configure the audience settings, giving users the opportunity to comment on publications, put likes, and get acquainted with profile information.
