Facebook is Testing a New 'Threads' Option for Feed Posts

It seems like every time another social app comes out with any feature that's even the slightest bit useful, Facebook is like 'we can do that too', doesn't it?

Last week, some Facebook users began seeing this new prompt appear within their posting process:

That's right, as per this example posted by Varon Kerolli (and shared by Matt Navarra), Facebook is working on a new 'Threads' option, which would provide a means to bolt on additional new posts to an original, in order to build a broader contextual story through your updates.

As you can see, each new post added to your Facebook post thread would be connected back to the original, creating a longer stream of updates aligned to a source announcement.

Which is exactly like Twitter's threads, which it introduced back in 2017, enabling users to add more context to their tweets, and even build a narrative flow within its short-form constraints.

Which makes a lot more sense on Twitter, given the character constraints - but then again, Facebook says that it's aiming for a slightly different focus with its Threads option, which it confirmed to TechCrunch is now in testing with selected public figures.

As reported by TechCrunch:

"Rather than inspiring longer posts, Facebook threads could be used for live commentary on an event like an award show. Or, users could post updates to their existing posts in a thread, rather than updating the original and making a clunky “edited to add…” announcement. Given that Facebook is testing this feature with public figures, perhaps its intended use is to make the sharing of news more streamlined."

That makes some sense, but the way they're displayed, in an expanded post stream, could be problematic, particularly if every user is eventually able to share ongoing updates about their everyday happenings.  

But that does depend on how Facebook chooses to display them - if Facebook only shows the first additional post in each thread, as opposed to an elongated stream in your feed, that could work, and it could be helpful, as Facebook notes, for evolving news events, making it easier for people to follow along with an updating stream in a post, which is similar to how many news outlets currently cover breaking news in a live text stream. 

It may make sense - and even though it's just Facebook copying a cool feature from another app once again, the case here does have practical, potentially valuable application.

As noted, right now, Facebook is only testing the option with a small group of public figures, with no set plans for a full roll out. You would think that Facebook would take a staged approach if it does look to expand it, which would see it go to all public figures, and probably Pages, before coming to regular users.

That could open up new options for brands, particularly as Facebook looks to move into live shopping events and other forms of community engagement.

Facebook Is Introducing Threads To Posts On Its Platform / Digital Information World

Facebook has recently been testing a new feature, by the name of "Threads", allowing users to link relevant posts together while having them share the same core audience.

If you're at all familiar with social media and the internet, you've encountered conversation threads. They're a medium most commonly found on, and associated with, the likes of Reddit and Tumblr (sites that are predominately about conversations over various topics). The purpose of threads in these platforms is to help keep conversations tidy and accessible to newcomers. Since discourse surrounding a single topic often tends to discuss multiple points about it, online comments can be very haphazard to go through. The solution? Creating a system where newer comments can "reply" to the one comment that's relevant to what they'd like to address. This way, all relevant comments are threaded together, and are easier to read. Twitter included this feature for users as well, even if it isn't necessarily encountered as much on the platform.

It seems that Facebook wants to join in on the fun too! As noted by social media journalist and guru Matt Navarra (who got tip from @valionk), the social network has introduced the ability to thread posts together. Since the reply feature's already available on Facebook's interface, threading comments does seem pointless. Therefore, it seems that the social media platform decided to let its users link relevant posts together to form a thread. For individuals that encounter the feature, a pop-up prompt follows as well, explaining the situation. It's a simple description, stating that users will be allowed to conjoin different posts together. All of the accompanying posts in a new thread will, however, share the audience garnered by the first post. That way, only relevant individuals get to join in on the conversation, and matters don't get too haphazard.

This is an interesting way of keeping conversations fresh. While Facebook's success is nowhere near done with, the social network does need to struggle in order to maintain relevancy. Especially with the presence of other social media apps such as Twitter, Instagram (which, to be fair, is also owned by Facebook), Snapchat, and Reddit, audiences are hard to come by and very easy to lose. The ability to thread conversations, however, is something that can effectively be used to have more engaging discourse. People can cite other posts, bring different parts of a topic into the conversation, and ultimately have a pretty good time of it. Even if the idea has been done to death, it's introduction in Facebook is something that the general community can make use of.

As it stands, the feature is not fully available to everyone. It is under A/B beta testing, where random individuals in certain regions can encounter the feature, utilize it, and therefore test it for Facebook. Who knows? It could be a while before the feature is properly integrated into the platform's interface for everyone to use.

Cover and avatar

Once you've set your group's cover, be sure to check out how it looks on a mobile device. Anything larger than 640 by 360 pixels will be clipped.

  • Static avatar

The size of the avatar must be at least 170 x 170 pixels (128 x 128 for smartphones). As in the previous example, you can upload a larger image so that it is larger and of better quality when opened.

  • Animated cover or video blog

Animated covers on Facebook can currently only be created on business pages. This feature is not yet available on the personal page.

The video must be between 20 and 90 seconds long and at least 1250 x 312 pixels in size. The recommended size is 820 x 462 pixels. It is best to use video with a resolution of 1250 x 463 pixels and an aspect ratio of 2.7.

You can change the size of the finished video using the online editor. For example, Resize-Video.

To make an animated cover, go to the company profile, click on "Edit" and then "Select video". The video must be uploaded to the library on the page in advance.
