Facebook users with privacy concerns have a new secret weapon. With the Facebook Secret Conversations feature, you can hide your conversations on the Messenger app from snooping hackers, governments, and even Facebook itself. Intrigued? You should be. We’re about to give you the lowdown on how this feature works and how to use it. Once you have the scoop, learn how to tell if someone blocked you on Facebook, how to block someone on Facebook Messenger, and how to see who unfollowed you on Facebook.
The Facebook Secret Conversations feature protects messages on the Messenger app using end-to-end encryption. Encrypting a message converts the text into a form that only the sender and recipient have permission to view; to outsiders, the messages would appear as a random jumble of letters and numbers. Cybercriminals, governments, and even Facebook cannot read the contents of messages in secret mode, according to Facebook. It would be impossible for Facebook to decrypt messages, and it’s unlikely that the company would hand over encrypted conversations to authorities with search warrants, privacy experts say. For additional security, the feature makes messages disappear after five seconds or up to a day—similar to Snapchat. Users might consider using Secret Conversations if they are sending sensitive information or have concerns about smartphone apps spying on their data.
When you send a message to someone using the Secret Conversations feature, a pop-up bubble will alert the other person that they are participating in an encrypted chat room. Text underneath the other person’s profile picture will also inform the other user in the chat that the conversation is encrypted. Facebook’s apps may be getting safer, but if you have these apps, your privacy might be at risk.
You can use Secret Conversations in Facebook’s Messenger app on any iOS or Android device. This feature is not available on Facebook’s website, though, so you can’t access it on a desktop computer. Keep in mind that Facebook Secret Conversations are only visible on the devices that you and the recipient used to start the conversation. And even if you could share that data, you shouldn’t. Next, read how to hide your friends on Facebook.
If you want to start a secret conversation on Facebook, you’ll need to head over to the Messenger app. You can always return to an existing secret conversation in the Messenger app, too. It will be listed with other Messenger conversations and have a small gray lock icon on the left-hand side. Not a huge fan of Facebook? It has long been common for active network users to understand that messaging in the virtual space is not strictly confidential. This fact is supported by numerous leaks of personal information in various resources. For this reason, services use encryption to protect the data of their users.
Let's take a closer look at how to classify Facebook correspondence, or rather Messenger, from strangers. And also you can find out additional options that this technology allows you to use.
Content:
This means that only the participants in the correspondence have access to the information. Even the staff of the site will not be able to read it. Messages are available for viewing only on those gadgets from which they were written or read.
For example, you use Facebook through your home computer or smartphone, and at work through your laptop. Login and password are stored on all devices, and login is performed automatically. There is a risk that someone from the household or workmates will read the correspondence that is being conducted in the application if the chat is not protected.
Secret correspondence is available for viewing only from a smartphone.
If you need to have a conversation from multiple mobile devices, then the user only needs to log into Messenger through another device. He will not be able to see already received messages, but he will be able to write new ones. His interlocutor will receive a notification about the entrance from another device.
Secret Messaging only works in Messenger on Android or iOS smartphones.
Materials that can be sent via secret messages:
The functionality of a separate Facebook secret chat does not include:
Attention : do not expect complete privacy. After all, the interlocutor can take screenshots of correspondence and share them with outsiders.
Before you can use Secret Chat in Messenger, you need to:
Secret chat activation process:
How to start your first private conversation:
Secret keys are used to verify that end-to-end encryption works correctly. Their reconciliation takes place at a personal meeting or through the exchange of screenshots.
Finding keys to secret messages on Facebook:
Digital keys must match for both participants in the dialogue, provided that the interlocutor has done similar actions.
Unscrupulous people often try to take over the secret chat for threats, insults and harassment. Facebook takes the security of its users seriously. To stop attempts of negative influence, it is enough to leave a complaint. It's very easy to do this:
All information sent by this user (even messages that disappear) will be decrypted. The archive will be sent to the support service for verification. The system will not send any notifications to the interlocutor. A person who does not violate community norms, but bothers with his activity, can simply be blocked in Messenger.
The user has the right to delete individual messages in a secret conversation by touching the “…” icon next to each. But there is an option to delete all secret chats:
One for regular messages from your friends. The second inbox looks like a spam folder and contains hidden Facebook messages from non-friends that the company thinks you don't know.
Facebook won't delete these messages, but it won't send you notifications that there are new messages in this hidden inbox.
This means that you should check your hidden mailbox periodically.
If Facebook thinks you know a non-friend based on connections to your current friends, Facebook will send a new message from that person to your regular inbox as a friend request. If there is no evidence that you know the sender, Facebook sends these messages, such as friend requests, to your secret spam inbox.
