Even if you do not have a Backup of WhatsApp on Google Drive, you can still Restore WhatsApp from Local Backup on Android Phone and recover all your WhatsApp Chats and Photos.
While the easiest way to Recover WhatsApp Chats is to Restore WhatsApp from Google Drive, it is also possible to Restore WhatsApp using the Local Backup File located on your Android Phone.
This situation usually arises when users end up deleting a glitchy WhatsApp install, without having a WhatsApp Backup on Google Drive.
Another reason is when users prefer making an encrypted WhatsApp Local Backup, instead of having a non-encrypted backup on Google Drive.
1. Backup WhatsApp to Internal Storage
If WhatsApp is still installed and working, you can follow the steps below to prepare the most recent Backup of WhatsApp on your Android Phone (If not, move to step#3 below).
1. Open WhatsApp > tap on 3-dots menu icon and select Settings in the drop-down menu.
2. From the Settings screen, navigate to Chats > Chat Backup > Back up to Google Drive option.
3. On the pop-up, select Never option to disable WhatsApp Backup to Google Drive.
4.Back on Chat Backup screen, tap on the Back Up button.
5. Wait for the Backup process to be competed.
2. Restore WhatsApp Using Local Backup
Now, that you have the latest Backup of WhatsApp on your Phone, you can follow the steps below to Restore WhatsApp from Local Backup.
1. Go to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > tap on Uninstall to Delete WhatsApp on your Android Phone.
2. Next, open Google Play Store > Download WhatsApp on your Android Phone.
3. Open WhatsApp on your Android Phone and tap on Agree & Continue.
4. On the next screen, select Country, enter Phone Number and tap on Next.
5. If prompted, verify your Phone Number by entering the 6-digit code sent your Phone Number.
Once the Phone Number is verified, WhatsApp will automatically detect the presence of an existing Backup File on your device.
6. On the next screen, tap on the Restore button to Restore all your WhatsApp Chats.
7. Wait for the Restore Process to be completed.
Once the Restore Process is completed, you should be able to access all your WhatsApp Chats and Photos.
3. Restore WhatsApp from a Previous Local Backup
If you had deleted WhatsApp without making a Backup, you should still be able to Restore WhatsApp using a previous Backup of WhatsApp on your Android Phone.
1. Open My Files App on your Android Phone.
2. On the next screen, tap on Internal Storage or SD Card (If your Phone has SD Card).
3. Next, navigate to WhatsApp > Databases Folder.
4. In the Databases Folder, see if you can find a WhatsApp Backup File without date. If you cannot, select the most recent WhatsApp Backup File and remove its Date.
For example, if the file is in msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 format > tap on More > Rename and rename the File to “msgstore.db.crypt12“.
Note: Backup extension may vary (crypt 10, crypt 11 and so on). Just remove the date and do not change the number of the crypt extension.
5. After Renaming WhatsApp Backup File, download WhatsApp from Google Play Store and follow steps (3 to 7) as provided above to Restore WhatsApp from Local Backup.

How To Restore Your WhatsApp Backup
To restore WhatsApp from a backup, you’re going to need to reinstall it from an app store, such as Google Play. However, as WhatsApp limits how often you can receive verification text messages to a specific phone number, you should make sure you know what you’re doing before you begin.
- Give WhatsApp the Necessary Permissions
In order to restore your WhatsApp message history, you’ll need to allow access to your contacts, photos, media and files. Start by tapping “continue.”

You can back up your WhatsApp data using Google Drive or local backup. Local backups are created automatically every day at 2 am and saved as a file on your phone.
Google Drive
You can back up your chats and media to Google Drive so that if you lose your phone or switch to another Android phone, your chats can be transferred.
How to back up to Google Drive
- Open WhatsApp .
- Click on More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup .
- You can click on the option BACKUP to create an instant backup.
- You can also use the Google Drive Backup feature and set the backup frequency to your liking.
- If you don't have a Google account, click on Add account when prompted.
- Click Use to select the network you want to use for backup. Please note that backing up using mobile internet may incur additional charges.
Please note the following:
- WhatsApp backups are stored in Google Drive without using up your Google Drive storage space. Please note that WhatsApp backups that have not been updated for more than one year are automatically deleted from Google Drive. To avoid losing copies, we recommend that you back up your WhatsApp data.

Restoring or transferring a backup
WhatsApp will ask you if you want to restore your backups of your chats and media when you verify your number. Just click on RESTORE when this option appears. If WhatsApp is not detecting backups, this could be due to the following:
- You are not connected to the correct Google account.
- You are not using the phone number that was used to create the backups.
- Your SD card or chat history has been corrupted.
- There is no saved backup of your chats in your phone storage or Google Drive.
Note : The easiest way to transfer your data to a new phone is to use Google Drive.
If you want to use local backup, then you will need to transfer your files to your new phone using your computer, file explorer, or SD card. If your backups are not saved in folder /sdcard/WhatsApp/ , you may see "internal storage" or "main storage" folders.
Restoring older backups
Your phone keeps local backup files for the last seven days. Only the most recent backup is stored in Google Drive. If you want to restore a local backup that is not the most recent, do the following:
- Download a file manager.
- In the file manager go to
sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases. If your data is not stored on the SD card, you may see "internal storage" or "main storage" folders instead of sdcard. - Rename the backup file you want to restore from
msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12tomsgstore.db.crypt12. It is possible that an earlier backup could be on an earlier protocol such as crypt9 or crypt10.
Do not change this extension number. - Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
- Press RESET when prompted.
