How do i back up whatsapp to google drive

WhatsApp urges Android users to manually backup their chats – Naked Security

Google, Mobile, Privacy

by Lisa Vaas

The good news for Android users: WhatsApp chats, photos and videos are no longer going to eat into your precious Google Drive storage limit. Starting 12 November, your quota won’t budge due to that particular backup bucket.

The catch: if you want to save your old WhatsApp content, you better back it all up before 12 November. That’s when WhatsApp will sweep out dusty old backups that haven’t been updated in more than a year, it said on its FAQ page.

On Monday, the Independent reported that Google emailed users to let them know that the move comes out of a new agreement between itself and WhatsApp. The change in how the instant messaging app backs up data is reportedly being done to make backup more accessible and seamless.

From the email:

Due to a new agreement between WhatsApp and Google, WhatsApp backups will no longer count against Google Drive storage quota.

However, any WhatsApp backups that have not been updated in more than a year will automatically be removed from storage.

How do I preserve my precious WhatsAppery?

Fortunately, backing up your old stuff is easy-peasy. But first, you need a few things: a Google account that’s activated on your phone, as well as Google Play services and enough space for the backup. WhatsApp notes on its FAQ that Google Play services are only available for Android 2.3.4 and higher.

How to create a Google Drive WhatsApp backup:

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
  3. Tap Back up to Google Drive and select a backup frequency other than Never.
  4. Select a Google account that you’ll back up your chat history to. If you don’t have a Google account, tap Add account when prompted and enter your login credentials. WhatsApp suggests that you please do remember the Google account you’re using for the backup – you’ll need that to get back into the backup.
  5. Tap Back up over to choose the network you want to use for backup. Note that this could cost you: backing up over a cellular data network might result in additional data charges.

Then again, you can manually back up your WhatsApp account to Google Drive at any point:

How to manually backup your WhatsApp chats to Google Drive

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
  3. Tap BACK UP to begin your Google Drive backup. The process might take a while, depending on how much data you need to back up.

To get at your new backup, you’ll need to go through the same Google account that you used in the first place. If you need to install or reinstall WhatsApp on your phone, the app will prompt you to restore the backup.

You can check out the WhatsApp FAQ for instructions on how to restore a backup, but bear in mind that you’re best off doing it over a Wi-Fi connection to avoid the data charges you’ll get stuck with if you do it over your cellular network.

Finally, it’s extremely important to keep in mind, given that WhatsApp is encrypted end to end, that the Google drive backups are not. From WhatsApp’s FAQ:

Important: Media and messages you back up aren’t protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption while in Google Drive.

On Android devices, iCloud functions are performed by Google Drive. Cloud service developers do not cooperate. WhatsApp backup from iPhone to Google Drive cannot be transferred directly. Restrictions on the transfer of correspondence are introduced to protect against the leakage of confidential data.

Restrictions can be bypassed by using third-party programs such as iCareFone for WhatsApp Transfer or MobileTrans-WhatsApp Transfer. When transferring data from iPhone to Android phones, these applications act as intermediate storage.

Install iCareFone for WhatsApp Transfer or MobileTrans-WhatsApp Transfer on your PC, then connect your iPhone and Android smartphone to your computer via a USB cable. Transfer your iCloud backup to Google Drive by following the on-screen prompts.

How to backup WhatsApp on your smartphone: instructions for Android and iPhone

If you switched to another smartphone, reset your data unsuccessfully, or simply deleted WhatsApp, you may need to restore all chats. How to do this, we tell in the article.

    Copy WhatsApp chats on Android

To backup WhatsApp, the user of the Android device must launch the messenger and follow these steps:

    1. Go to the "Other options" section.
    2. Open settings.
    3. Go to chats.
    4. Select "Backup Chats".
    5. Go to the option to back up information to Google Drive.
    6. Set the frequency at which data will be saved - the default is "Never". You can select "monthly", "weekly" and "daily".
    7. Specify a Google account for accessing Google Drive to which backups will be saved. If not, a profile should be created. This account will also be used to restore chats.
    8. Select the type of network to create the backup. It is desirable that copying be performed over Wi-Fi - this will save traffic and reduce mobile communication costs.
    9. If you want to copy not only text, but also videos, check the box next to the corresponding item.

To create a copy manually, follow the first 4 steps of the instructions. But instead of going to the copy point, you should click on the green button that says "Backup". This will allow you to get the most up-to-date save for transferring chat history to another device - while a copy is automatically created no more than once a day at 2 am.

End-to-end encryption can be enabled to increase the security of data storage. To do this, after completing the same 4 points of the initial instructions, select the "Encrypted Copying" section. Then, enable the feature and set up a password or a 64-digit key. To create an encrypted backup, click Create.

    iPhone backup: using iCloud

Another way to backup WhatsApp is for iOS device owners. The data is stored in the iCloud cloud service. To do this, the user must perform a few simple steps:

    1. Open the messenger.
    2. Go to the program settings.
    3. Open the "Chats" item.
    4. Select "Backup".
    5. Click on "Create a copy" to get an up-to-date save or set up an automatic backup by selecting the "Automatic" item and setting the backup frequency. If you want to save the video, check the box next to the corresponding item.

We recommend that you set up saving over a Wi-Fi network. This will reduce the consumption of mobile traffic and reduce the time to create a backup.

For this method to work, the user must be logged in on the iPhone or iPad with the same Apple ID that is used to sign in to iCloud. You also need to activate the iCloud Drive slider in iCloud settings. The required amount of free space in the cloud is 2 times the size of the backup.

Copy of WhatsApp on the computer

If you have an iPhone, you can back up WhatsApp and save data not only on your phone, but also on your computer. All you need is your iPhone, a Windows or macOS computer, a PC sync cable, and an iTunes account. The copy process consists of the following steps:

    6. In the "Backups" group in the main part of the window, select "This PC".
    7. Click the "Back Up Now" button.

This will create an iTunes backup folder on the PC, downloading all information from the chats. On a Windows PC, it will be located in the Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Mobile Sync\Backup\ directory. On a macOS computer, at Library/Application/Support/Mobile Sync/Backup/. From here they can be restored in case of accidental data loss in messengers.
