How to Delete Your Instagram Account

Instagram now allows you to delete your account from directly within the Instagram app. This article shows you how it's done.

To comply with Apple's updated App Store guidelines, Instagram in June 2022 added an option in its app for users to delete their account on the service.

Previously it was only possible to delete your Instagram account by logging into a web browser on a desktop browser or mobile device. However, Apple told developers that apps offering account creation must also support account deletion from June 30, 2022, so Instagram had to add the feature.

If you want to delete your account, be aware that account deletion is permanent and it removes your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes, and followers.

That said, there is a 30-day period in which you can change your mind about deleting your account, so you can log back into Instagram after requesting deletion if you want to stop the deletion.

Note that instead of deleting your account, you could always deactivate your Instagram account temporarily, and all of your content will be hidden until your enable it again by logging back in.

Here are the steps to deleting (or deactivating) your Instagram account on iPhone.

Launch the Instagram app.
Tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner.
Tap the three lines in the top-right corner.
Tap Settings.
Tap Account.
Tap Delete account near the bottom of the menu.
Confirm by tapping Delete Account (or Deactivate Account).

If you’ve made the decision to delete Instagram, whether because you’ve outgrown the need for a certain finsta or because its parent company Meta is courting controversy again, doing so isn’t as quick or easy as it should be. Up until recently, it couldn’t even be done from within the Instagram app.

Go ahead and take a moment to make an obligatory “I’m deleting Instagram” post if you’d like. After that, you have two ways you can go about it.

Deleting Instagram using the iOS or Android App

The easiest way for iPhone users to delete Instagram is by using the app. To do so, go to your profile, tap the hamburger menu in the top right, and select Settings. Then go to Account, and scroll down to the bottom of the menu. There will be a Delete Account button under the Branded Content button.

If you have it, tapping on it will bring up a menu asking if you want to delete or deactivate your account — you can read more about those other options in the “Temporarily suspending your Instagram account” section of this how-to. Pressing the Delete account button will bring up a message saying that you can stop the deletion process by a certain date if you log back in.

Tap the red Continue deleting account button, and the app will open a webpage. Here, you can complete the deletion process after you answer a question about why you’re deleting your account, and enter your password to confirm.

Apple’s rules mean that Instagram’s iOS app has to let you delete your account. In our testing, the option hasn’t always been available on the Android version of the app. You can check for the Delete Account option by following the instructions for iOS above, but if you don’t have it, you’ll have to do it using the web.

Deleting Instagram on the web

If you can’t use the app to delete your account, you’ll have to follow these steps to ditch your account — they can be followed using either a computer or phone, as long as you’re using a browser.

First, you’ll have to go to Instagram’s special account removal request page, which can be found here, or by following the link in Instagram’s account deletion help article. If you’re not logged into Instagram for the web (most people won’t be), you’ll have to enter your credentials. In fact, it’s very likely you’ll have to put in your password twice throughout the deletion process, so now’s probably a good time to make sure you know what it is.

Instagram will clearly show you what account you’re about to delete, and ask you why.

You should end up on a page with the old Instagram logo and a dropdown asking you why you want to delete your account. Depending on which option you choose, you may be shown various links to Instagram’s help center promising to fix your issues or a message helpfully reminding you to check which account you’re deleting.
Whichever you pick, there’ll be a box below the links that asks you to reenter your password. After you do, tap or click the button that says Delete (your account name), and confirm that you’re sure.

Tapping the delete button after entering your password will give you one last confirmation pop-up.

As Instagram says a few times on the account deletion page, your data won’t be immediately erased — Meta will keep it around for 30 days. But your profile and posts will be hidden on the site.

If you’re completely breaking up with Instagram, don’t forget to remove the app from your phone as well. Doing so will save you a little space and will also put a little bit of friction between you and signing back up for the service.

How to un-delete your Instagram account

Be aware that you won’t be able to bring your account back if it’s been over 30 days since you asked Instagram to delete it. You’ll have to recreate your account (your username will be freed up after your account’s deleted, but it’s possible someone could’ve taken it).

You can restore your account within 30 days by logging back in.

However, if you’re within that 30-day time period, you can get your account back, along with its posts and DMs. To do so, simply go back to Instagram and log in with your credentials. You’ll see a message saying that you requested your account be deleted, along with the date your data will be gone. To keep that from happening, just press the “Keep Account” button.

Temporarily suspending your Instagram account

If you want to remove your account from public view, but don’t want to permanently delete all your photos and messages, you can suspend your account instead.

The screen to suspend your account is relatively easy to access, but you’ll have to do it through a web browser.

Again, Meta makes you use the web version of Instagram, instead of the app, but at least you won’t have to get a link from a help article.

After logging into Instagram.com, go to your profile and click the Edit Profile button (if you’re using a mobile browser, you’ll have to tap the settings cog to get the option).
From there, go to Edit Profile > Temporarily disable my account (it’ll be an option at the very bottom). As with deleting your account, you’ll have to select a reason why you’re suspending your account, and put in your password.

To re-enable your account, simply log back in using the app or the website. You’ll only be able to suspend your account once a week, so if you accidentally log back in your profile, your posts will be back online and visible to followers, at least for a little while.

If for some reason you want to delete your Instagram account temporarily or permanently, use our detailed instructions and choose the method that is most convenient for you.

Why delete an Instagram account

The reasons for deleting an Instagram profile can be very different.

Some users notice that they devote too much time to maintaining their Instagram account to the detriment of work and personal affairs. Yes, and real communication fades into the background, it is replaced by virtual.

And scientists from the University of British Columbia say that users' own lives are beginning to seem insufficiently bright and interesting compared to how other people show their lives on Instagram.

Finally, not everyone wants their photos and stories to be in the public domain.

If you also no longer want to show your life, publications already made can be archived. In this case, no one will see them except you. For this you need:

Go to your page in the app and open the post you want to archive.
Click on the three dots in the upper right corner.
In the list that appears, select the "Archive" item.

When you want to leave Instagram altogether, you can delete your profile temporarily or permanently.

How to delete an account temporarily

A profile that has been temporarily deleted is not visible to other users of the social network. As soon as you want it to be available again, you just need to log into the application from your phone or computer, as usual.

Deleting from your smartphone

To temporarily delete your profile, do the following:

1. Go to your social network profile, go to the "Settings" section and select "Help". In the menu that appears, click on the "Help Center" line.

2. On the support page, open the "Manage your account" item. In the search bar that appears, start typing "Temporarily disable." Go to the article "How to delete your Instagram account".

3. Click the link "How to temporarily disable your account" and find the article "Instagram. com from a mobile browser". Click on the link in the first paragraph of the instructions and go to the mobile browser.

4. On the main page of your account, click on the "Edit profile" button and select the link "Temporarily disable my account" at the very bottom of the page.

5. Select the reason why you want to disable the account. Confirm your choice with a password and click on the "Temporarily disable account" button.

Temporary deletion via PC

To deactivate your profile temporarily via PC, follow these steps:

1. Log in to the social network site using your account.

2. Tap on your profile photo and select "Settings" from the menu that opens.

3. At the very bottom of the page, click on the "Temporarily disable my account" link. On the page that opens, specify the reason for deactivating the page. Then enter your password.

Important! You can temporarily block an account no more than once every seven days.

How to permanently delete an Instagram account

This option should be chosen when the profile is definitely not useful. For example, if you conducted it for a company that is closing, and the manager asked you about it.

If some data that was in the account needs to be saved, Instagram gives this opportunity before deleting the page. To do this, follow the instructions that are described here. After that, an e-mail will be sent with a link where you can download photos and videos.

Deleting a page from a smartphone

If you want to permanently delete your account, do this:

1. Log in to your profile in the application and click on the “Settings” item. In the menu that appears, select the "Help" line and go to the "Help Center".

2. On the page that opens, select "Manage your account". A search bar will appear in which you need to start typing the query "Delete profile". Go to the article "How to delete your Instagram account".

3. Follow the link provided in the article and indicate the reason why you are deleting your Instagram account. Then enter the page password.

Deleting an account via PC

To delete a profile using a PC, do the following.

1. Go to the social network site and click on the "Help" button in the lower right corner.

2. Go to Help Center and select Delete your account from the left menu. Follow the link provided in the article.

3. Specify the reason why you are deleting the profile and confirm the action with a password.

Important! Even when you have completed all the steps to delete the profile, it will be visible on the social network for another 30 days. During this time, you can change your mind and restore the profile. To do this, you just need to log in to the system. If you don't, your account will be permanently deleted.

How to temporarily block an account

Deleting an account is an irreversible process, so added photos, videos, galleries and stories, as well as the account itself, will be permanently deleted. To save your account and continue using it later, temporarily block your account. This procedure can be carried out only once a week.

In a browser, open the authorization page https://www.instagram.com/accounts/login/ and sign in to your account. Then click on the user icon and click on the "Edit Profile" button. Scroll down and select Temporarily disable my account.

Specify the reason why you chose to block your account by selecting an option from the list. After that, re-enter the password, click "Temporarily block the account" and confirm the blocking.

Before deleting an account

A temporarily blocked account is restored in a couple of clicks. Moreover, at a time when the profile is not active, account data continues to be stored on Instagram servers. But when you delete your account, this data will be erased. And if the materials uploaded to the profile were saved on the device to the Instagram folder, as described later in the article, then you will no longer be able to view comments on posts or read messages received in Direct.

Especially for users who want to save all information from the profile, including added stories, photos and videos, saved posts, likes, comments, search history and more, Instagram developers have created a special feature.

If you are not interested in downloading account data and you want to quickly move on to deleting your profile, scroll to the next paragraph of this instruction. For the rest: go to the application, click on the user icon in the lower right corner, and then you will be taken to the profile. Now click on the "Menu" button and select "Settings".

Open the "Security" section and click on the "Download data" item.

In the "Email address" field, you can leave the email address associated with the account or enter another one. Click Request File, enter your account password, and click Next.

A message will appear that the file has been requested. It can take up to 48 hours to collect data and send an email with a download link, but usually the email arrives within 10 minutes. If there is no message for a long time, check your Spam folder. You can create such requests no more than once every four days.

The email you receive will contain a link to download the file. Follow it (the page will open in the browser), if necessary, log in. Then click "Download data" already on the site page.

The download of the archive will start. Its size depends on the number of correspondence, published publications and stories. Therefore, for users who regularly post on Instagram, the archive size can exceed several gigabytes, and its download can take a long time.

Extract the contents of the archive. Media files are stored in separate folders: "direct", "photos", "profile", "stories", "videos". And the correspondence, comments left, likes, search history and settings are recorded in text format in files with the JSON extension. To open the latter, use a text editor such as Notepad++.

How to permanently delete an Instagram account

In a browser on your computer or phone, go to https://instagram. com/accounts/remove/request/permanent/ and log in if you haven't done so before. Select the reason why you want to delete your account from the drop-down menu. Enter the password again, click the "Permanently delete my account" button and confirm that you are sure.

How to uninstall the Instagram app

Since the account has been deactivated, the Instagram app is no longer needed and can be safely deleted.

Pure Android

Go to the application menu or desktop if there is no menu in the launcher and drag the Instagram icon to the trash. To confirm the deletion, select "OK" in the pop-up window.

For Samsung, Huawei and Honor

Hold your finger on the Instagram app icon for a few seconds and a menu with available options will open. Click on the "Delete" item and confirm the action by selecting "OK" in the dialog box that appears.

For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Hold your finger on the Instagram icon until the icons begin to shake. Click on the cross in the upper left corner of the icon and select "Delete". Finally, press the Home or Done button if you have one of these models: iPhone X, XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro, or 11 Pro Max.

How to restore a temporarily blocked account

To activate a frozen account, just log into it through the application or log in to the Instagram website. If you try to log in shortly after your account has been deactivated, you will be notified that your account has not yet been locked out. Then try again in a couple of hours.

Where are profile photos stored? It appears in the Gallery or Google Photos and is located in the internal memory in the "Pictures" directory. After deleting your account, the downloaded media files will remain there.

The Instagram client for iOS cannot disable saving photos and videos added to the profile, so they are uploaded to the Camera Roll in the "Instagram" folder by default.
