Instagram videos – stats & facts

Now you have all you need for the job. But for the full story, let us give you a little bit of background information about Instagram videos and why they matter.

Already in 2019, 54% of consumers were interested in watching more video content from businesses they support. That means that you definitely have an incentive to prepare more video content in general.

Moreover, Instagram is seeing a big-time rise in ad dollars coming to the platform lately. It seems brands have found greener pastures on Instagram over Facebook’s News Feed. Instagram states that 33% of the most-viewed Stories on Instagram are those that were posted by businesses.

This calls for changes in the way marketers capture leads. Instagram video campaigns are no longer a nice-to-have strategy; now it’s your necessary survival gear!

What’s more, experts say ‘Stories’ was Instagram’s smartest move yet. ‘Stories’ were released in August 2016 as a directly copied feature from Instagram’s competitor, Snapchat. Now, in 2022, it hits 500 million users daily. That’s over twice the number of users Snapchat had for its entire app life!

Today, brands can use Stories to promote their products too! The platform lets you seamlessly integrate your video ads between organic releases so that they blend in.  According to Instagram, 60% of users said they found out about a new product through Instagram.

For all these reasons, Instagram videos are definitely worth the money. That’s a bulletproof investment, and that is why you should consider them for your next (or current!) social media marketing strategy. 🙂

If you’re not using the power of video to meet your marketing goals yet, it’s time to start. Pick up a camera and start churning out video content like there’s no tomorrow!

What’s the best Instagram video size, format, and resolution?

When Instagram first graced our iPhone Home screens, it was primarily a photo-sharing app. But as the quality of our picture-taking (and editing) skills increased, so did the app’s capability to incorporate other mediums we can use to elevate our digital footprints. Video was, without a doubt, the most notable addition.

Instagram introduced video-sharing in 2013 with posts enabled to feature videos up to 15 seconds long. It was a glorious time in social media, as accounts creatively curated new content for this format.

Now, video is a massive component of an overall high-quality and engaging Instagram presence. So if you want to add video to your Instagram strategy, there’s no better time than now.

Instagram video size and length restrictions

As with all good things, there are still limitations in place today on Instagram videos. In this section, we’ll go over all of the size and length restrictions you need to be aware of prior to shooting.

Instagram Story video size and length

Instagram Stories are arguably one of the most popular features on the app, so it’s no surprise that Instagram allows and encourages users to post their videos through Stories.

Even though it may seem like the sky is the limit for videos posted to Stories, there are some restrictions to be aware of, such as:

  • Video dimensions need to be a minimum of 600 x 1067, but Instagram recommends video dimensions of 1080 x 1920 for Stories.
  • The maximum Instagram file size is 4GB.
  • The Instagram Stories video length limit is 15 seconds. However, you can post an unlimited number of 15-second videos back-to-back to essentially create one long video.

It’s also important to note that when you upload a video longer than 15 seconds to Stories, it automatically splices it up into 15-second chunks for you. So you might have to trim your iPhone video if you want it to fit in one Story.

Instagram video size and length for posts

You won’t find any feature-length films on this social media app. While videos on Instagram have drastically changed from the original 15-second rule, there is still a short-form limitation in place. And the dimensions depend on which kind of video you use: vertical, landscape, or carousel and square.

Here are the requirements and restrictions for vertical videos:

  • The minimum Instagram vertical video dimensions are 600 x 750.
  • The maximum Instagram file size is 4GB.
  • The maximum frame rate is 30fps.
  • While there is no minimum length for vertical videos, the maximum Instagram video length is 60 seconds.

Here are the requirements and restrictions for horizontal videos:

  • The minimum Instagram landscape video dimensions are 600 x 315.
  • The maximum Instagram file size is 4GB.
  • The maximum frame rate is 30fps.
  • While there is no minimum length for vertical videos, the maximum Instagram video length is 60 seconds.

Here are the requirements and restrictions for carousel and square videos:

  • The minimum Instagram square and carousel video dimensions are 600 x 600.
  • The maximum Instagram file size is 4GB.
  • The maximum frame rate is 30fps.
  • While there is no minimum length for vertical videos, the maximum Instagram video length is 60 seconds. However, you could post up to 10 60-second clips to create a video up to 10-minutes long.

IGTV video size and length

In June 2018, Instagram launched IGTV in an effort to meet users’ requests for long-format video. IGTV videos can be posted to your feed or can be found in the IGTV section of your homepage.

While you have more wiggle room when it comes to length for IGTV videos, there are still some limitations to be aware of:

  • The minimum IGTV video length is 60 seconds.
  • When you upload from a mobile device, the maximum IGTV video length is 15 minutes. However, when you’re uploading from a computer, the maximum length increases to 60 minutes.
  • The maximum file size is 650MB for videos 10 minutes or shorter, or 3.6GB for videos up to 60 minutes.
  • The recommended size for IGTV cover photos is 420 x 654.

Instagram video resolution and aspect ratio

Uploading videos might seem as simple as pressing a button — and often, it is — however, there are two components to consider if you want your content to be high quality: resolution and aspect ratio.

A video’s resolution is the number of pixels that can be displayed in each dimension, which determines how clear or unclear a video is. The aspect ratio is the relationship between the video’s height and width, which also determines the overall picture.

As you may have guessed, Instagram has its own requirements regarding resolution and ratio. We’ll dive deeper into those numbers in the sections below.

Instagram Story aspect ratio and best resolution

Having crystal clear videos on your Instagram Story can lead to an increase in engagement and user action. Here are some requirements and recommendations to keep in mind:

  • Instagram Story videos are recommended to be at a ratio of 9:16 and 16:9 and 4:5.
  • The recommended resolution is 1080 x 1920 pixels.
  • However, the minimum width is 500 pixels, and the maximum aspect ratio is 90 x 160.

Recommended aspect ratio and resolution for Instagram posts

It’s no surprise that using high-quality videos counts the most in your posts.

In general, Instagram supports photos and videos that have a width between 320px and 1080px. However, the recommended resolution and aspect ratio depends on the format you choose: vertical, landscape, or square and carousel.

Below are the requirements and recommendations for vertical video posts:

  • Vertical videos can have a maximum aspect ratio of 4:5 (if they are larger than that, they will get cropped).
  • Instagram recommends a resolution of 1080px by 1350px or as close to that as possible.

These are the requirements and recommendations for landscape video posts:

  • Horizontal videos can have an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 16:9.
  • Instagram recommends using 16:9.
  • Instagram also recommends a resolution of 1080px by 607px.

And here are the requirements and recommendations for square and carousel video posts:

  • Square videos should have an aspect ratio of 1:1.
  • Square videos should have a resolution as close to 1080px by 1080px as possible.

Video aspect ratio and resolution for IGTV

Since IGTV is increasingly growing in popularity and use, it’s important to make sure the videos you share there are easy to watch. Below are the requirements and recommendations for aspect ratio and resolution on IGTV videos:

  • IGTV video dimensions should be 1080px by 1920px,  but the minimum resolution is 720px.
  • IGTV videos should have an aspect ratio of 9:16 for vertical videos and 16:9 for horizontal videos.

Does Instagram support 1080p video?

Yes, Instagram does support videos with a resolution of 1080px for IGTV, posts, and Stories.

How to crop a video for Instagram

If you need or want to crop a video for Instagram, the process is fairly simple. Here are the instructions:

  1. Open your iPhone Photos app.
  2. Navigate to the video you wish to crop.
  3. Press the Edit button in the top-right of the screen.
  4. Select the crop tool at the bottom-right of the screen.
  5. From there, you can either manually crop the photo by sliding the corners in and out, or you can choose one of the formatted crop sizes by pressing the square tool at the top-right of the screen.
  6. Press Done.

Once you go through these instructions, your newly cropped video will be saved to your Camera Roll.

How to resize a large video for Instagram

If your video is too large to upload, you’ll have to resize it first. Thankfully, there are many apps and tools designed to change the Instagram video size. For the purpose of this article, we’ll be using the app No Crop, which is free to download in the App Store.

Here’s how to resize a video for Instagram using No Crop:

  1. Open No Crop.
  2. Press Videos.
  3. Give No Crop access to your Camera Roll by selecting OK.
  4. Select the video you wish to resize.
  5. Use the slider tool to make your video smaller or larger.
  6. Press the checkmark at the top-right of the screen to save.

What Instagram video format is supported?

Instagram supports the video format MP4 for IGTV, posts, and Stories. To get even more technical, the supported video codecs are H. 264 and VP8, and supported audio codecs are AAC and Vorbis.

If you’re active on Instagram — or are strategizing to be more active in the future — you’ll want to include video content. Not only is it one of the leading online formats, but it’s a creative way to break up your feed and be even more engaged with your followers. Hope this guide helps you figure out the optimal Instagram video size, format, and resolution to best tell your story.

Instagram video duration

Instagram is one of the most popular and multifunctional platforms on the Internet. In addition to photos, you can also post videos on Instagram. To promote and create high-quality content in your profile, you should familiarize yourself with how long videos are on Instagram and how to publish them.

Maximum and minimum video sizes on Instagram

When uploading videos to the feed, you first need to know the maximum and minimum video sizes that are allowed to be published in this program. So, what is the maximum length of the video and what is the minimum?

From year to year, the developers of the Instagram platform expand and improve their functions, thereby providing users with more options. In particular, in 2018, the developers decided to make changes to the duration of the videos that users can upload to their pages.

Changed and improved parameters:

  • maximum video length - 60 seconds;
  • minimum video length is 3 seconds;
  • maximum video weight - 1.75 GB;
  • Roller aspect ratio dimensions are 1:1/1.9:1/4:5.

How long a video can be uploaded to Instagram

Knowing the size and length of a video that can be uploaded to Instagram is essential to avoid unwanted blunders and errors in the posting process. How many seconds can the longest video be? Given the constant extensions and updates, users have a question about how many seconds long video recordings can be posted on the platform. You can upload video files by time up to one minute.

Duration of videos in Instagram stories

If the question of how long a video published in the Instagram feed can last is resolved, then it is worth considering the details of publishing videos in Instagram stories, because in this case the parameters are somewhat different from simple publications and posts.

Within Insta Stories, some parameters are rather reduced and narrowed down. Instagram Stories allows you to upload videos up to 15 seconds long. In order to post this or that video, you can either pre-filmed videos or shoot them online and add them to your story immediately after shooting is completed. You can add various stickers, gifs and details of time, geolocation, countdowns and captions, color effects and filters to the video in Instagram Stories. It is possible to add brightness to your own videos in stories using colored markers and lenses, boomerangs, super zooms, and even flip the video, starting it from the end.

Video duration in igtv

At the very beginning of Instagram, there was only the possibility of posting photos and videos to the feed, then Insta stories were developed. And with the advent of a new wave of popularity of this social platform, IgTV was invented. How many minutes of video can be uploaded to Instagram TV? This question and some details should be analyzed in more detail, because IgTV provides even more opportunities for all active users.

Statistics show that in most cases people do not linger on watching a particular video for more than one minute. It is with this pattern in mind when using social networks, especially Instagram, that developers try to stick to the video duration of one minute.

Parameters for videos in Insta TV:

  • duration of videos for all users - from 14 seconds to 10 minutes in a file size of no more than 650 MB;
  • duration of videos for major bloggers and public figures, verified pages - up to 60 minutes in a document size up to 5. 4 GB, if downloaded from a personal computer, laptop, but not from a cell phone;
  • video file format for IgTV - mp4;
  • Video settings for Instagram TV - aspect ratio from 4:5 to 9:16.

Live video duration

Insta live broadcasts are one of the most popular and frequently used features, both account holders with a large number of followers and those who do not have a huge number of followers, many users enjoy using live broadcasts. But when opening live broadcasts, the question arises of how long a live can take. Live broadcasts can go on for an unlimited amount of time, but it is recommended to broadcast live broadcasts within 20 to 35 minutes.

During this period of time, users will actively join, some viewers will disconnect, the leading person will receive likes. Viewers can write comments, ask questions and have a conversation while watching the live broadcast. The chat, if desired, can be rewound to view previous comments from other viewers. Such a conversation can be turned off if the viewer does not want to participate in the discussion.

The person who conducts the live broadcast can save the recording of the broadcast and thus enable other users to get acquainted with the recorded material, for those who did not have time to watch the broadcast itself.

How to post a long video on Instagram

The longest video you can post is one minute or less. You can post a video for more than one minute on Instagram only in separate “portions”. You can upload several maximally long one-minute videos at once or videos of shorter length in one post. Within one full-fledged publication, you can post from one to ten videos. Thus, you can post a video on Instagram for more than one minute in pieces, but at once in one post. In order to post such a block from different parts, you need to click on the "many windows" icon during the publication and select from two to 10 files.

Posts on Instagram for more than a minute are immediately impossible to post. When you select a particular video in the program, icons are displayed on the screen, the third icon to the right of the publication is used to add several files, which as a result will be posted in one post. This feature allows you to place consecutive parts of one longer video (longer than 60 seconds).

How many minutes of video can be uploaded? The entry must be no longer than one minute. You can post various photos, videos. Videos can be added to stories, uploaded as an ordinary post to the feed (on the page), you can also conduct live broadcasts and save them for all those who want to watch the footage. As part of Insta Stories, you can add stickers and various effects before publishing.

Instagram video format - what features to use

Instagram users spend an average of 53 minutes per day browsing the platform. This includes their News Feed, Live Streams, Instagram Videos, IGTV, and Stories. If you want to get noticed, you need to create the best video content you can.

Instagram makes it easier to shoot a video and then upload it to the platform. The only problem you may face is the correct format, size, shape and video specifications for Instagram.

In this article, you will learn about ideal video format for Instagram and its characteristics. We will also share many other useful tips to help you start creating professional videos to grow your channel.

What is the best video format for Instagram?

The best video format for Instagram is MP4 .

Your video file must include the following specifications:

  • Codec: H. 264
  • Audio: AAC
  • Bitrate: 3500 kbps
  • Frame rate: 30 fps
  • Video can be no longer than 60 seconds
  • Maximum video width is 1080 pixels
  • Video height must be 920 pixels

You can use most professional video editing software to export videos using these specifications.

However, if you just want to convert videos to Instagram format, you can use a free online converter.

There are many options available online, but let's take a quick look at two:

  • Kapwing comes first. This online tool calls itself "a modern image, GIF and video editor". In addition to providing an easy way to convert footage to Instagram video format, it also has tools to make basic edits to your videos. You can crop, rotate, resize and add music or text to your video.
  • Next comes Online-Convert – and it lives up to its name! This free tool allows you to convert all types of digital files. And it even has separate pages for each social media platform, making it easy to convert footage to Instagram video format. You can even upload your video to the service directly from Dropbox or Google Drive.

Now that we've covered the Instagram video format, what else do you need to know?

Instagram video dimensions and aspect ratio

Let's start with the specifications that are best for:

  • IGTV
  • Stories Instagram
  • Instagram Live

The best video to upload to Instagram is with an aspect ratio of 9:16 , which looks like this:

You may have noticed that this is the standard screen size of most smartphones.

Now the best Instagram video sizes are 1080 by 1920 pixels . In other words, this means that your Instagram video must be 1080 pixels wide and 1920 pixels high. This will provide the best video quality.

Instagram Feed video features

Instagram supports different video sizes in feed posts. In particular, you can upload videos with aspect ratio from 1.91:1 to 4:5 .

These two extremes are simply portrait or landscape options.

The best Instagram sizes for these aspect ratios are 1080 by 608px and 1080 by 1350px .

And, as mentioned, you can use any aspect ratio between these two extremes. For example, you can share a square video with a 1:1 aspect ratio and 1080 by 1080 pixels.

However, you should keep in mind the user experience of Instagram. Remember that the Instagram app does not rotate on smartphones. In addition, 87 percent of people say they usually hold their phone vertically.

This means that whenever you post a widescreen image or video on Instagram, it will look small. This is far from ideal when you are trying to attract your followers.

Instead, it's best to create vertical video content whenever possible. This will allow your videos to take up more screen real estate.

It's also worth noting that when IGTV or Instagram Live videos are viewed in the Instagram feed, they are cropped to the Instagram video's 4:5 aspect ratio.

In short, it is clear that smartphones are leading us into a future full of vertical video.

How long is the Instagram video?

Instagram video length recommendations differ for Feed Posts, Stories, Live Video, and IGTV.

Here is a summary of the Instagram video duration for each type:

  • Instagram feed video duration : 3 seconds to 1 minute.
  • Video length in Instagram Story : up to 15 seconds per story.
  • IGTV video length : 15 seconds to 10 minutes.
  • Duration of Instagram Live : Up to 60 minutes.

It's worth noting that if you upload a video to Instagram Stories and it's longer than 15 seconds, the app will split it into 15-second clips for you. But, it will only create four 15-second clips, so this trick only works for videos up to 60 seconds long.

Also, the 10-minute IGTV limit can change at any time.

When it comes to IGTV, Instagram says, "Large accounts and verified accounts can upload videos up to 60 minutes long, but they must be uploaded from a computer."

In the past, Instagram and Facebook often made new features available to larger accounts and influencers before rolling them out to everyone.

Let's hope that the ability to upload longer videos will be extended to all Instagram accounts soon.

IGTV: Time to jump on the trend

Instagram announced IGTV back in June 2018.

Although there is a standalone IGTV app, it is fully integrated with the main Instagram service so you can use and access it in the Instagram app.

As a result, we get three ways to upload videos to IGTV:

  • In the IGTV app
  • In the Instagram app
  • Using a web browser

The third option is the most convenient.

The ability to upload content directly from your computer makes it much easier for brands and influencers to create and upload high-quality Instagram content.

How to upload videos to IGTV from Instagram or IGTV apps

First, open the Instagram app and go to the main feed. Then tap the IGTV logo in the top right corner of the screen, this will open IGTV.

Here you can use IGTV in the same way as in the IGTV app, the only difference is the hotspot. From here, we can walk you through how to upload videos to IGTV, no matter what app you're using.

All you have to do is click on your profile picture in the small circle to the right of the screen above the video browser. If you don't see the video browser, just click Browse at the bottom of the screen.

After you click on your profile picture, you will be taken to your IGTV profile. If you haven't uploaded a video yet, this page will be empty.

To download a video, simply touch the symbol + . Then select a vertical video between 15 seconds and 10 minutes long and click "Next" in the upper right corner.

From here, the process is similar to uploading an image or video to your Instagram feed. However, there are a couple of new features.

  • After you've added a description and title, you'll need to select a splash screen. On YouTube, this is called the "thumbnail image" of your video. This image is shown as a preview to viewers. You can select a still frame from your video or upload a specially designed JPG image from your device.
  • Once you've chosen a splash image, you can also post a preview of your IGTV video to your Instagram profile and feed. This will help introduce your IGTV videos to your current audience.

Why you should start creating videos for IGTV

Instagram has a long history of "selecting the best features" from its main competitors, such as Snapchat Stories, face filters, Snapchat text and graphics, and Periscope for live video from Twitter.

Instagram seems to be targeting YouTube today. For years, YouTube has dominated when it comes to long-form video content from brands and influencers.

Many influencers attract incredibly large audiences on YouTube. However, influencers clearly prefer Instagram for brand collaborations.

The ability to upload longer videos directly from your computer is sure to appeal to brands and influencers looking to capitalize on Instagram's user base and engagement.

Unlike YouTube, Instagram is universal . It combined images, gifs, videos, detailed content, stories, live videos, messaging, comments, discovery tabs and more into one cohesive app.

It makes life easier for creators and consumers.

Instagram is literally becoming the one-stop hub for how influencers and brands interact with their audiences. Plus, consumers no longer have to switch between apps to follow their favorite influencers.

So, if you're not creating content for IGTV, it's a good idea to start now.
