How to turn on dark mode for instagram

How to Turn It on for iOS and Android

  • You can get Instagram dark mode on your iPhone, iPad, or Android by updating your device settings.
  • There's no in-app setting to turn on Instagram dark mode — the app will mirror your device's settings.
  • You'll need at least iOS 13 or Android 10 to enable Instagram dark mode.

Turning on dark mode changes an app's background to a darker color — usually black instead of white — to reduce the amount of bright white light on your screen. While dark mode isn't actually better for your eyes, it can help your device save battery and it can feel gentler to look at, especially before bed.

Instagram has dark mode for iPhones or iPads running iOS 13 or higher and Androids running Android 10 or higher. When activated, it changes the backdrop of the app (behind the photos) to black, and all the text to white.

For both iOS and Android, there's no setting to turn on dark mode within the Instagram app itself — rather, you turn on dark mode in your device's system settings and the Instagram app will automatically adjust to match the rest of your device. Here's how to do it.

Quick tip: Before you begin, make sure your Instagram app is updated to the latest version.

Download PC Repair Tool to quickly find & fix Windows errors automatically

Instagram is probably the most famous social media platform today. There are a lot of reasons behind its success, it has a nice and intuitive UI, millions of celebrities, Reals, and all the other goodness. However, even after so many years of development, they couldn’t just add a Dark Mode to the web version. But there are some ways by which you can actually enable Dark Mode in Instagram on PC, in this post, we will be talking about that.

Is there Dark Mode for Instagram on PC?

Dark Mode is not baked into Instagram Web. So, you can not just enable Dark Mode from the settings as you would on a smartphone. However, there are some workarounds that you can try to have the same effect. These workarounds include enabling a Flag, using a custom URL, or trying an extension. More often than not, you won’t even notice any difference. To know more and to see how you can make your Instagram darker and cooler, continue reading.

If you are on a phone, you can just go to Settings and configure Dark Mode. This feature is useful on phones as most of the modern flagships come with an OLED display where to produce black the display has to turn off individual pixels. As a result, you can save a lot of battery. So, if you use Dark Mode on Instagram, the UI not only will look, but it will also save a lot of your battery, a win-win situation. However, since most computers come with an LCD display, they are deprived of this feature, but there will always be a workaround and we will discuss that.

Following are the methods to enable Dark Mode in Instagram on PC.

  1. Use a custom URL
  2. Use Edge or Chrome Flag
  3. Try Night Mode Extension or Dark Theme Addon

Let us start with the first method

1] Use a custom URL

Let us start using a custom URL to enable Dark Mode on Instagram. All you need to do is append ?theme=dark to the original Instagram URL. So, the new URL would be:

www.instagram.com/?theme=dark

You can copy and paste it into the address bar and hit Enter. Your background will become dark as the dark mode will be enabled on your system. If you want to go back, just remove the added string or just go to instagram. com.

If you don’t want to be typing “?theme=dark” every time you want dark mode, just add it as a bookmark. So, if the next time you want to open Instagram in Dark Mode, all you need to do is click on the bookmark and you will be good to go.

2] Use Edge or Chrome Flag

There is a Chrome or Edge Flag that allows you to force Dark Mode on any website. Since Instagram is a website, the dark mode will be enabled on it too. To use the feature, you need to follow the prescribed steps.

  1. Open Chrome or Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) on your computer.
  2. Then, Chrome users should go to chrome://flags and Edge users need to go to edge://flags.
  3. Search “dark” in the search box and hit Enter.
  4. Set the drop-down menu of Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents to Enabled.

This will do the job for you. You can open Instagram and it will have the dark mode enabled.

In case you are having some trouble with this flag, you can always disable it. Just select Disabled from the drop-down menu of Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents and you will be good to go.

3] Try Night Mode Extension or Dark Theme addon

There is a dedicated Nigh Mode extension that can be installed on your browser and used to give dark aesthetics to Instagram, which is quite reminiscent of the actual dark mode of Instagram that you get on a smartphone.

If you use any Chromium-based browser, such as Chrome, Edge, Brave, etc, try Night Mode for Instagram from chrome.google.com. Firefox users should download Dark Theme for Instagram from addons.mozilla.org.

After downloading the addons, open Instagram, click on the extension once and dark mode will be enabled for Instagram. To turn it off, you need to click on the extension again. This should do the job for you.

Hopefully, now you know how to enable Dark Mode on Instagram.

How to turn on the black theme

On iPhone (IOS)

There is no separate button in the application itself that is responsible for turning the dark theme on and off. To enable the black screen on Instagram, you will have to set up the iOS 13 main theme.

There are three ways to enable the dark theme.

Method number 1

Open "Settings", find the item "Display and brightness" and switch the theme to "Dark".

Method number 2

Open the Control Center, press and hold the slider until the theme switch window appears.

Method number 3

Add a dedicated button to the Control Center. To do this, open "Settings", select the "Control Center" section and add a mode switch to the existing elements.

After enabling dark mode, all apps will automatically switch.

iOS 11 includes a "Smart Invert" feature that gives you the ability to turn on the dark screen individually for specific apps. However, it is in the Instagram application that "Smart Inversion" does not work well. Primary colors change: photos become less saturated in color, videos become gray.

On Android

Dark theme can also be activated on Android devices. The interface will be completely black with white accents. The function seems to be in beta, since the new function appeared relatively recently, not all the nuances have been worked out. For example, the battery status bar may also become dark, making it difficult to see how much battery is left on the phone.

To enable on Android:

  1. Go to "Settings";
  2. Go to "System";
  3. Click "About phone";
  4. Scroll to the very bottom and click on the line with the build number;
  5. Wait until you are notified that you have become a developer;
  6. In the developer options, find "Night mode" and set the mode to "Always on".

After enabling this mode, the theme will change in all applications.

Is it possible on a computer?

Of course! It is only active on Windows 10. Older versions do not support the dark theme.

Of course, you will need the official Instagram application for Windows. You can download it from this link to the official app store.

  • Open Settings. To do this, click on the gear button in the start menu;
  • Next, go to the personalization settings, where you select the "Colors" subsection;

  • Specify that you want to use "dark mode".

The appearance of Windows and applications will not change, only the background color and brightness will change.

Unobvious advantages

Black is something new, cool and aesthetic. But there is also a practical aspect.

  • Energy consumption can be reduced by 60% according to PhoneBuff statistics.
  • Reading at night is better with a darkened background. So your eyes are less tired + you do not shine your screen like a flashlight into the face of a person lying next to you.

Users who spend a lot of time on Instagram, especially at night, often wonder how to turn on the dark theme in the social network on the iPhone. If you go to the settings of the Instagram app on your iPhone, you won't be able to find a dark theme there. However, there are several ways to activate it at once, which we will consider in this instruction.

Table of Contents

Instagram Dark Theme on iPhone

Instagram Dark Theme on iPhone cannot be activated in the app settings. This is due to the fact that it is tied to the settings of the iPhone itself. That is, when the dark theme is enabled on the device, the dark theme is also displayed in the Instagram app.

When you activate the dark theme, Instagram does not change in terms of functionality - it does not add any new features. The only change is that the interface is made in dark colors - the background becomes black and the text color is white. The color of photos and videos in the feed does not change.

Please note

Optometrists recommend using a dark theme at night to reduce eye strain in the dark.

How to enable dark theme on Instagram

As noted above, the dark theme on Instagram on iPhone is tied to the settings of the device itself. Accordingly, in order to enable the dark theme in the application, you need to configure the phone accordingly. There are 2 ways to operate the dark theme on iPhone.

Method 1. Automatically turn on the dark theme, depending on the time of day.

To set it up, launch the Settings app on your iPhone and go to the Display & Brightness section.

Next, activate the "Automatic" switch.

Optionally, you can adjust the settings for automatically enabling Dark Mode. If you do not specify a specific schedule, it will turn on after sunset, and after dawn, the normal light mode will be activated.

Method 2: Install the dark theme permanently.

To do this, go to "Settings" on the iPhone and go to the "Display and brightness" section.

Next, select the “Dark” design option.

The dark theme will immediately turn on on the iPhone, and the dark theme will also be activated on Instagram.

How to turn on the dark theme on Instagram at the right time

The methods that we have indicated above are bad in that they require you to constantly go to the iPhone settings and activate the dark theme. If you need to return to the normal theme on the device after that, you will again have to go to the settings. But there are two ways that make it possible to enable a dark theme in the Instagram application itself.

Method 1. Through the brightness settings.

While in the Instagram app, swipe up on your iPhone to open the shortcut menu.

Next, hold your finger on the brightness control.

This will open a quick menu where you can enable dark mode. Click on the appropriate button.

Immediately after that, the dark theme is activated in the Instagram application.

Please note

The dark theme is activated on the entire device, but after exiting the Instagram application, it can be quickly turned off in the same way.
