How to disable comments on InstagramThe application does not allow you to disable all comments and thus prevent commenting on all Instagram posts. So if you want to disable comments on Instagram, you will have to do this manually for each post. That can be done in two ways:
- While publishing a post or
- For an already existing Instagram post
Below we outline the simple steps you need to follow to disable comments on your post before sharing it with the world.
- Open Instagram, create a new post, add filters or edit content, then click “Next”
- Before clicking “Share”, click “Advanced Settings” at the bottom of the screen
- In the advanced settings, select the “Turn Off Commenting” slider
- After turning comments off, click “Share”, and it’s done!
For this particular post, commenting has been effectively disabled:

How to block comments on Instagram containing offensive commentsInstagram has various tools to combat messages and comments full of hate. Unfortunately, not many people know about them. The social network offers a keyword filtering system that automatically blocks any comments that may contain words that are considered incorrect or offensive.
The tool has a predefined list of prohibited words by default. If someone posts a comment on your profile containing one of these phrases, the application will automatically delete it. Usually, this option is enabled by default. However, you can also manage it.
- Go to your profile
- Tap the settings wheel that appears in the upper-right corner of the screen
- In the privacy settings, select “Comments”
- Tick the slider button to activate the option “Hide Offensive Comments”
It is also possible to face a situation where offensive comments containing words or phrases that the application did not include in its filter will appear on your profile.
In this case, Instagram allows users to indicate specific keywords, the appearance of which will automatically delete the comment. You can activate this feature very quickly:
- Go to your profile
- Tap the settings wheel that appears in the upper-right corner of the screen
- Go to comment settings
- Activate “Manual filter”
- Add the words you want to block in the “Custom Keywords” section
Upon activation, Instagram will block words that you have identified as offensive. You can change or supplement this list at any time with new terms that will affect the visibility of comments under the posts.
How to hide comments on Instagram that contain offensive contentIf you’d like to use a similar, yet more advanced feature of this kind, check out NapoleonCat’s Auto-moderation. It works for organic posts and Instagram ads as well. But more on that later.

- Log in to Instagram with your username and password

How about automating comment moderation on Instagram?
With NapoleonCat’s Auto-moderation feature, you can make your life easier and automatically hide or delete comments based on specific keywords that you define. The feature works both for organic posts and Instagram ads as well.
So, you can use Auto-moderation to create various “rules”, and each rule is responsible for a different automatic reaction on your Instagram profile.
You simply need to name your rule, choose the Instagram account you want it to work for, choose the trigger (e. g., organic comments), and define the keywords that will trigger the rule.
After that, you only need to select the action that the rule will take, e.g., hiding comments. Alternatively, you can set the rule to delete comments or automatically reply to them (you can set multiple reply templates).
Here’s a video tutorial that we made on how to automatically hide/delete offensive comments on Instagram:
Creating an Auto-moderation rule is really simple and will only take you a few moments. And you can create as many rules as you’d like!
Once a rule is triggered, you will get an automatic email notification with the link to the post it worked for.
Using this protective shield against spam, hate speech, and inappropriate comments will keep your comments section clean – the rules are triggered instantly.

Disabling comments on Instagram – FAQsCan I disable comments for all my Instagram posts?Unfortunately, you cannot automatically disable all comments using the Instagram app. You can turn off comments on individual posts. However, with NapoleonCat, you can automatically delete any incoming comments on Instagram – which works very similarly to disabling comments altogether.
You can disable comments on individual posts while publishing by going to the advanced settings section or after publishing a post by clicking on the drop-down menu symbol and selecting “Turn-off commenting”.
This feature has been disabled. Currently, you can only disable comments when watching the broadcast on your computer using the Chrome browser after installing the IG Stories for an Instagram extension.
You can enable automatic filtering of offensive phrases by launching the “Hide offensive comments” option. You can also turn on the “Manual Filter” option, thanks to which you will be able to add keywords that will automatically eliminate comments containing a given phrase. For more advanced filtering options, check out NapoleonCat’s Auto-moderation.

Is It Possible To Turn Off Comments On Instagram Live As A Viewer?
No. Unfortunately, Instagram does not provide a built-in feature using which viewers can turn off comments on Instagram live. There used to be Chrome extensions earlier to help viewers take control over Instagram comments sections while watching live, but most of them have stopped working now.
As a default setting, all your followers are allowed to react and reply to your Instagram stories by swiping up. But if you have a large following base, you might instantly get flooded with tons of messages in your inbox after you post a story.
Follow the below steps to turn off comments on Instagram story when you just don't want replies in general (be it positive, negative, or spam).
Step 1: Open your profile in your Instagram app. Tap on the hamburger icon at the top right-hand side.
Step 2: From the menu popped up, tap on Settings -> Privacy.
Step 3: Under the "Interactions" section, tap on "Story. " You can see that under the "Allow message replies" section, a blue tick appears in front of "Everyone," which clearly implies that anyone and everyone can reply to your stories.
Step 4: Tap on the circle in front of "Off" so that the blue tick shifts from "Everyone" to "Off," indicating that now you have turned off replies to your Instagram story.
Note: In the same menu, if you choose "People you follow," you can limit the number of replies and reactions only to whom you follow (and whom you consider as genuine people and would possibly have fewer chances of spamming your inbox).
After making this change, your story viewers won't see the "Send Message" box below your stories. The swipe-up option to reply and react to your stories will also stop working. Remember that changing this particular setting won't stop your followers from sending you normal DM requests.
Instagram reels is an easy feature to boost organic engagement almost immediately. To avoid the unnecessary engagement from stacking up, use these steps to turn off comments on Instagram reels.
Step 1: Open your Instagram and go to your profile page. Locate the all reels section by tapping on the reels icon. Now, you can see all your Instagram reels that you have posted to date.
Step 2: Select and tap the reel whose comments you wish to turn off. Your reel will start playing with several options displayed on the sides as soon as you do this. From the bottom right-hand side, tap on the three vertical dots, which will open up a reel's settings menu.
Step 3: You need to tap on "Turn off commenting" to turn off comments on Instagram reel. Now, you will see that the comments icons disappear from the bottom right-hand side of your reel.
If you wish to turn Instagram comments on, tap on the same three vertical dots from the bottom right-hand side and tap on "Turn on commenting. " You will observe that now the comments icon starts appearing again.

Step 1: Open your Instagram and go to your profile page. Locate the IGTV section by tapping on the IGTV icon.

Step 3: Tap on the three vertical dots from the top right-hand side & toggle "Turn off commenting" to turn off comments on Instagram IGTV.
Step 4: By doing this, the comments icon will be displayed at the bottom of your IGTV video, but the comments section will appear blank when you tap to open it up.
If you wish to turn Instagram comments on, toggle the button in front of "Turn off commenting," the comments section will open for engagements.
Instagram has made it easy to fight trolls and bullying and encourage positive interactions through their comments section by rolling out a restrict feature.
Here's a step-by-step process on how to restrict comments on Instagram to quietly deal with unwanted interactions in the comments sections.
Step 1: Go to the post and tap on "View all comments."
Step 2: Tap and hold the user's comment you wish to restrict (for Android) or swipe left over the particular comment (for iPhone).
Step 3: You would be able to see three icons (a pin, an exclamation sign, and a bin) to perform three different actions with the comment you have just selected.
Step 4: Tap on the exclamation sign icon, and a menu will pop up on your screen from the bottom with three options.
- Restrict [username]
- Block [username]
If you tap on "Restrict [username]," Instagram will show you the actions that would be restricted from the particular user.
After you tap on "Restrict Account," Instagram will make the particular comment visible only to you and the user. You can choose to "Delete Comment" if you want to remove the comment entirely from your post.
If you restrict a user, and they comment on your post, their comment will appear as blurred under your post. You can choose to see the comment or delete it.
If you choose to see a comment, the comment will become visible, and you can give a read to their entire comment. If you find it appropriate and relevant, you can tap on "Approve" for the comment to become publicly visible under your post.
However, if you don't find the comment appropriate, you can delete the comment, and it won't be visible to you or anyone under your post.
Block Comments On Instagram
If you tap on "Block [username]," Instagram will give two options to choose from:
- To block that user and any new accounts that they may create in future
- To block only that account of the user
Blocking a user on Instagram will prevent them from viewing your feed post, stories, reels, IGTVs. Their DMs will not get delivered to your inbox either.
You can choose to unblock the user by going into your Settings -> Privacy -> Blocked accounts and tapping "Unblock" in front of the user's name. After users are unblocked, they will have to refollow you to see your post, stories, reels, and IGTV in their feed.
How To Report A Comment On Instagram?
If you tap on "Report this comment," Instagram will ask you for the reason to report the comment.
After you tap on the most appropriate reason, the comment will go to Instagram for review. If the comment does not meet Instagram's Community Guidelines, they would be removed from the platform.
You can't control what other people choose to comment on your Instagram post. But you can surely choose to eliminate the rudest, offensive, and unwanted Instagram comments to completely disappear from your post and not be visible to anyone.
Can You Delete A Comment On Instagram?
Deleting an Instagram comment can be accomplished in two ways.
- You choose to delete your comment on your own post or someone's post.
- You can delete someone's comment made on your own post.
Instagram does not provide an inbuilt feature for you to delete someone else's comment on someone else's post (the nearest option is to report such comment, and Instagram will look into it).
How To Delete Your Comment On Instagram?
Instagram gives you the option to undo typos in a comment or a comment you regret posting by deleting it off (and commenting again if you want). Here's a step-by-step process on how to delete your comment on Instagram.
Step 1: Open your Instagram app and find the post with the comment you want to delete.
Step 2: In the comments section of that post, find your comment and tap on it (for Android users) or swipe left over the comment (for iPhone users.)
Step 3: Your comment will get selected, and a trash icon will appear at the top of your screen. Tap on it to delete your comment on Instagram.
Step 4: Instagram will instantly display a notification of "Comment deleted" along with an option to undo your action. If you have to, you need to undo the action within a few seconds as this notification does not stay for longer.
How To Delete Someone’s Comments On Instagram?
Here's a step-by-step process on how to delete someone's comments on Instagram that does not relate to your post without letting the user know.
Step 1: On your profile page, go to the post whose comment you want to delete and tap on "View all comments. "
Step 2: Tap and hold the user's comment you wish to delete (for Android) or swipe left over the particular comment (for iPhone).
Step 3: You would be able to see three icons - a pin, an exclamation sign, and a bin. Tap on the bin or trash icon to delete the particular comment permanently from your post.
Step 4: Instagram will instantly display a notification of "Comment deleted" along with an option to undo your action. You need to undo the action within a few seconds if you want to, as this notification does not stay for long.
How To Edit A Comment On Instagram?
Unfortunately, Instagram doesn't have a built-in feature to edit a comment. The closest measure possible is to delete your comment and post a new one with fixed errors.
Though this process of deleting and reposting comments on Instagram requires a few extra steps compared to the ease of editing comments on other social platforms, it's still a quick way that can be done in a matter of minutes.
If you are eager to engage with your audience and not willing to turn off comments on Instagram altogether, you can still get rid of spam & disgustful Instagram comments by hiding them.
Can You Hide Comments On Instagram?
Yes. Instagram provides several ways to get rid of cyberbullying on its platform and make you feel safer, such as these ones.
- You can choose to filter Instagram comments based on keywords.
- You can switch on Instagram's hide offensive comments feature.
- You can restrict certain users from commenting on your post.
- You can block users from viewing and engaging with your Instagram content at all.

How To Hide Comments On Instagram Using Instagram's Inbuilt Feature?
You can save yourself some trouble by hiding offensive Instagram comments rather than manually deleting each and every one. Here's a step-by-step process on how to hide comments on Instagram.
Step 1: Open your Instagram app and locate your profile. Tap on the hamburger icon at the top right-hand side of the screen and go to Settings->Privacy->Comments.
Step 2: Toggle the button in front of "Hide offensive comments" to automatically eliminate derogatory Instagram comments that are made on your post.
Step 3: To further hide Instagram comments that are annoying and displeasing, toggle the "Hide more comments" option.
How To Hide Comments On Instagram Based On Keywords?
If you want to filter out Instagram comments based on specific keywords, toggle the "Manual filter" option. Enter the words you would like to filter so that if anyone’s comments contain similar words, Instagram will filter them out and prevent them from being live on your post.
How To Hide Comments On Instagram From Certain Users?
You can also choose to block Instagram comments on your post from certain people whose profile seems suspicious to you. This option is different from blocking an account altogether, as they will still be able to view your posts.
However, the Instagram comments they leave on your photo will only be visible to them. You only need to tap on "Block comments from" and enter their username.
One of the ways to decrease the amount of unpalatable and foul Instagram comments significantly is to limit the comments to either your followers, people you follow, or both as opposed to the maximalist "Everyone" setting.
Step 1: Open your Instagram app and locate your profile. Tap on the hamburger icon at the top right-hand side of the screen and go to Settings->Privacy->Comments.
Step 2: Tap on "Allow comments from." From the menu opened up, you should choose the most appropriate option by tapping on the circle in front of them and transferring the blue tick from "Everyone. "
Once you limit comments on Instagram, comments on your post will not be visible to anyone apart from the ones you have selected, neither will they be able to post comments.
This is how your Instagram post and its comment section will be visible to anyone apart from those you have selected.

How to hide comments on Instagram under a post
If you don't periodically clean up the comments on your Instagram posts, they will turn into a warehouse of advertising, spam and hate. The more popular the account, the more obvious this problem is.
However, you should remember that you should not turn off comments just like that, because this is an activity that affects the promotion of your account. Comments should be removed if a lot of advertising messages, inaccurate information, flooding are published under the post, or if you have published a post of a personal nature and do not want to see comments from strangers under it. And also if you have a personal account and you do not need to promote it. In the article, we also described in detail in which cases it is worth getting rid of comments. You can delete them manually, set up filters, or close comments completely. In the article we will tell you how to do it.

- only to those you follow;
- only to your subscribers.
P.S. Before disabling comments from subscribers, consider how appropriate it is - comments, like any activity on Instagram, affect the promotion of content, and if this is a company account, then subscribers may be unhappy with the lack of feedback. The alternative is to block comments from specific users or disable comments under certain posts.
The second way to completely hide comments is to turn them off one by one under each post, as described in the first two paragraphs. But, if you have several tens or hundreds of posts published, it will take a long time.
How to block comments of specific users
In the same section "Interactions - Comments" we find the item "Block comments from" - open and in the search we find the accounts of these people. The section will indicate the total number of blocked. Blocked users will be able to continue to write comments, but they will no longer be seen by anyone except themselves.
Another way to block comments from specific users is to give them restricted access.
Step 1 . We return to the privacy settings and in the "Contacts" section we find the item "Accounts with restricted access".
Step 2 . Select accounts from the search.
In this case, comments from such users will be seen only by you and them. In addition to restrictions on comments, a restriction is also imposed on Direct - dialogues with these accounts will fall into correspondence requests, they will not be able to see whether you have read their messages or not, they will not be able to see your status and activity on Instagram.
P.S. Another way to restrict an account's access to your comments and Direct is to go to its page, click 3 dots, and select "Restrict access".
How to set up filters for comments
Auto filters.
Instagram has automatic filters that remove offensive comments and spam, but they are not enough. If you accidentally turned them off and want to return them or are just wondering where they are, go to the privacy settings (Settings - Privacy - Comments). The slider next to "Hide offensive comments" should be in the on position.
Manual filter.
In addition to the auto filter, you can enable a manual filter for words and phrases. Works not only for posts, but also for stories, Reels and live broadcasts.
Step 1. In the same section of comment settings, enable the "Manual filter". A field opens where you need to write words separated by commas.
Step 2. Additionally, you can set up a filter for the words that are most often complained about (works automatically).
P.S. Custom keywords and phrases do not work for languages that do not have spaces, such as Japanese and Chinese.
Why remove comments
As we have already written above, comments should not be removed just like that, because activity under posts helps to promote your account due to the algorithms of Instagram itself. But there are times when it's really worth it. For example:
- offensive comments, bullying, hate under posts is a common situation on the pages of stars and popular bloggers. However, if this is a company account, and you are not dealing with a hate, but with justified criticism, closing comments will only exacerbate the problem - in this case, it is better to properly close the objections of a disgruntled client. By the way, hate happens not only towards the author of the page, but also towards his subscribers, and here you need to take action;
- many posts not related to the case — when the post became like someone else's chat, where they communicate not on the topic of the post. But here is a moot point, whether it is worth turning off comments or not - if, after an innocent communication, frank poaching of subscribers to competitors begins, then you can;
- spam (advertising your profiles, services, etc. ) - everything is clear here. Although if you are sure that you are superior to your competitors and advertising under posts will not deprive you of your target audience, you don’t have to bother;
- when it is better to close comments for ethical reasons — for example, a post about a tragedy or about a person with disabilities, about some social problem or a post about politics — in these cases, inadequate people often come to the comments and go beyond the limits of decency ( up to mockery of the victims of accidents). For such topics, it is better to turn off comments at the stage of posting (that is, immediately).
- online harassment and harassment — girls face this problem more often, but men too. Do not underestimate online harassment, sometimes they turn into very real threats.
- misinformation - for example, trolls have joined on the order of a competitor and started writing lies about you that can ruin your reputation. You can remove comments before they lead to resonance and you have to justify yourself publicly;
- when there are too many inappropriate comments to hide them manually, and the filters can't cope;
- a personal post — for example, the post is about family, and you do not want to see comments from strangers under it;
- you have a personal account - on which friends, relatives, colleagues are subscribers. You do not need promotion and involvement of strangers, so you do not depend on the activity under the posts, which means that they can be turned off.
Conclusion
Account owners decide how to put things in order in the comments - someone closes them and blocks violators, someone does not pay attention to the garbage under the posts at all. In any case, you have the right to set rules on your territory, but do not forget that any activity is still activity, and it can help posts appear more often in the feed and recommendations. But you need to be able to distinguish that fine line when activity begins to harm your account and it’s really time to get rid of comments.
