How to Share Audio on Instagram with Turn | by Lee Martin

Last week I launched a new app called Turn which takes a sound file and image file and turns it into a music video which includes a rotating visual of your image. You can download this video and share it on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and any other network that supports video. You could also host it on your server and embed it with a simple <video> tag. Hell, you could send it in an MMS message.

Why rotation?

It’s become the norm these days to see social networks mute your videos before user interaction so it’s important to give the user some indication that audio is playing. Being an early SoundCloud employee and working with artists for years, I have developed countless custom audio players. One technique would be to visualize a waveform but I wanted to go for something much more subtle and nostalgic. There’s something hypnotizing about rotation and the movement is part of the history of music consumption. The visual of a record spinning on a turntable sitting in the center of the room on a pedestal like a piece of art comes to mind. I also think about the spin of a cassette or compact disc. It always felt magic to see this simple mechanical action render such incredible soundscapes.

I love the platform of the vinyl and disk for visual expression. In addition, the simple circular shape of the videos create the feeling of uniformity that you get from a record collection. As you share more of these on your timeline, I suspect users will feel an urge to jump from one to another as they uncover the pleasant user experience.

Don’t take my word for it though.

Read on to find out how you can create a Turn video today for free.

1. Select artwork image

Click “Choose your image file” to select a JPG image of your artwork. We’ll accept any size but crop it to a circle shape which you can preview in the left column of the website. Depending on the composition of your artwork, you may want to adjust the cropping yourself before upload.

2. Select background color

Once your artwork is selected and spinning, you may want to change Turn’s default background color to something that suits your image better. Turn expects a hex color but you can also try any of the web color names as well.

3. Select audio file

Finally, you’ll want to select your MP3 file. By default, Turn will trim this file to the first 60 seconds of audio so it fits within Instagram’s timeline limit. If you know the best part of the track, simply trim it beforehand.

4. Create video

Once you’ve provided all of your files, the “Create video” button will become selectable. Click it to begin the creation process. First, we’ll upload your files to Turn. The timing of this action will be dependent on your MP3 size and your current Internet connection. Turn will then begin creating your video. Depending on the length of your audio, this could take 1 to 2 minutes. Once completed, you will be notified and provided a large “Download video” button.

5. Share video

Clicking “Download video” will download the video to your computer. Then what? Well you have a couple of options on getting the file to your mobile device. I have an iPhone so I like using Airdrop when it’s cooperating. You could also simply email the file to yourself and then check your email on your phone. I’ve seen people use Dropbox and Box also. Regardless of what method you choose, once the video is in your photo library, you can share it socially like usual.

How to Use Saved Audio on Instagram Story

Instagram has added a lot of features to its services in the past year or so. This includes Stories and Reels which were a much-awaited yet controversial feature for the platform. Users have been making use of these new features to gain new audiences which prompted Instagram to add a huge library of songs to its platform.

You can now use these songs in your Reels and Stories. But what about your saved songs? Can you use them within Stories on Instagram? Let’s find out! 

Can you use Saved audio on Instagram?

You can use the audio you save to your Saved list on Instagram from the app’s library but you can’t use the audio downloaded or saved in your phone storage — not without the workaround at least.

Instagram allows you to save popular songs used within Reels and posted online directly to a ‘Saved’ section in your account. This allows you to create a shortlist of your favorite and frequently used songs which can then be easily accessed whenever needed.

However, this section is inaccessible when adding songs to your Stories, and here’s how you can work around it.

How to use Saved audio on Instagram 

You can use Saved audio either from the ‘Saved’ list in your Instagram account or directly from your local storage. Follow either of the methods below depending on your current requirements. 

Method #01: Use Saved audio from Instagram

We first need to identify the Saved song or audio that you wish to use within your Story. If you have not saved the audio or song on Instagram, then you can search for the song, select it from your search results, and tap on ‘Save audio’ at the top.

If you’re looking to save audio from a Reel, then open the concerned reel, tap on the audio thumbnail in the bottom right corner, and tap on ‘Save audio’ at the top. Once you have saved the audio, you can use the guide below to add it to your stories. 

Note: You can only add saved ‘Songs’ to your stories within Instagram natively. You can not add custom audio or native audio used within reels by users on Instagram even though the same has been saved by you. If you wish to use custom audio then you can download the reel, extract its audio, and then upload it to your story using the guide below. 

Step 1: Identify the Saved song

Open Instagram and tap on your profile icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.

Now tap on the menu icon in the top right corner. 

Select ‘Saved’. d

Tap on ‘Audio’. 

Now find the song you wish to add to your story and note down its name if needed.

Use the guide below to add it to your story.  

Step 2: Add the song to your story

Open Instagram and swipe right on your home feed to access the camera. Ensure ‘Story’ is selected at the bottom and record the video you wish to share. 

Once recorded, tap on the ‘Stickers’ icon at the top. 

Now search for ‘Music’ and tap on the sticker once it shows up in your search results.

Tap on the search bar at the top and enter the name of the song you noted down earlier. Tap on the song once it shows up in your search results. 

Tap the timeline at the bottom and drag left or right to adjust which part of the audio is added to your video.

Tap and select the desired font as well from the list at the bottom.

 

Tap on the color icon at the top to change the color of the lyrics appearing on your screen.

Tap on ‘Done’ in the top left corner once you are done.  

And that’s it! The selected song will now be added to your story. You can now continue editing the story and post it to your account as you normally would.

Method #02: Use Saved audio from your local storage

If you wish to use audio from your local storage in your Instagram story, then you will first need to record and save the story to your local storage. You can then use a video editor to add audio to it and then post it to Instagram again. Follow the steps below to help you along with the process. 

Open Instagram and swipe right on the home feed to access the camera. Ensure that ‘Story’ is selected at the bottom and then proceed to record the desired video you wish to publish.

Once recorded, tap the ‘Audio’ icon at the top to mute the video’s recorded audio.

 

Tap on the ‘3-dot’ menu icon in the top right corner. 

Select ‘Save’. 

The video will now be saved to your local storage.

We can now add the desired audio to it using a video editor. We will be using CapCut for this guide but you can use any other video editor as well depending on your preference. Download and launch CapCut using the link below.

Tap on ‘New Project’.

Now tap and select the video saved by Instagram to your local storage.

Tap on ‘Add’ at the bottom to add it to your new project. 

Tap on ‘Add audio’. 

Now tap on ‘Sounds’. 

Tap on the ‘Folder’ icon at the top of your screen. 

Tap and select ‘From Device’.

Now select the audio you wish to add to your story and tap on ‘+’ beside it.

Once the audio has been added, tap and select the same on your timeline.

Drag the extreme right end of the audio to adjust it to the length of your video.

Once you are done, tap on the drop-down menu in the top right corner of your screen.

Select your video quality and frame rate now. We recommend using 720p and 30fps for Instagram but you can choose your own settings.

 

Once done, tap on the ‘Export’ icon in the top right corner again as shown below.

The project will now be exported as a single video and you should be able to find the same in the following location on your Android device. Tap on ‘Done’ once exported.

DCIM/Camera

Once exported, open Instagram and swipe right to access the camera. Ensure that ‘Story’ is selected at the bottom and then tap on the ‘Gallery’ icon in the bottom left corner of your screen.

 

Now select the video you created in your video editor.

Tap on ‘Next’. 

Tap and select ‘Separate’. 

The video will now be added to your story. Continue to edit and post your story as you normally would on Instagram. 

And that’s it! You will now have added custom audio from your local storage to a story on Instagram.

Here are a few commonly asked questions about audio in Instagram stories that should help you get up to speed with the latest available information. 

Can I add audio from local storage directly to stories?

Sadly no, Instagram does not allow you to use audio files from your local storage when publishing Instagram stories. This is a restriction in an attempt to prevent copyright infringement on the platform.

Can you access ‘Saved’ in Reels?

Yes, you can access ‘Saved’ in Reels on Instagram. Record a reel as you normally would, tap on the ‘Music’ icon on your left, and then tap on ‘Saved’ at the top. You should now have access to all your saved audio on Instagram. 

Can you remix Stories on Instagram?

No, Instagram is yet to add the ability to remix Stories on Instagram. The platform differentiates stories as being a more direct and more personal way to connect with your audience. Thus allowing other users and followers to remix your stories could be detrimental to the overall privacy of your account and posted stories.

Share songs to Instagram Stories from Spotify

Spotify is the music streaming service that has made posting songs on social media mainstream. If you're a Spotify user and wondering where to start, here's what you need to do. Share songs to Instagram Stories from Apple Music

Following Spotify's lead, Apple Music recently added a feature that allows users to share songs to Instagram Stories. If you're an Apple Music user, you can access sharing settings by tapping the three-dot menu next to the song title and artist name. In the pop-up window that appears, click on the "Share song" option.

Here select "Instagram Stories" from the list of available options. Now you can add the song to your Instagram story. While Apple Music is late to the party, its implementation stands out. When you view a story that contains an Apple Music song, you'll notice a beautiful ripple effect in the background that enhances the aesthetic. This is undoubtedly my favorite implementation from the entire group. So you can easily share your 25 most popular songs for your Instagram followers to enjoy listening to. nine0003

Share songs on Instagram Stories by TIDAL

TIDAL, the audiophile favorite music streaming service, has also received integration for sharing stories on Instagram. To get started, click on the three-dot vertical menu in the bottom right corner. When a pop-up window appears with a set of options, select Share.

Shortly after you select "Share", TIDAL will ask you to specify the target platform. As you can see below, the first option on the Share page is Instagram Stories. Click on it and wait for the app to redirect you to Instagram. nine0003

Share songs with Instagram Stories from SoundCloud

As for sharing songs from SoundCloud, this method is much easier thanks to the "Share" button right in the music player interface. All you have to do is click on it and select Stories with the Instagram logo on it.

The rest of the process is quite simple. SoundCloud will take you to the Instagram story add page and you can click to add the song to your story. The final story has a neat blur with the SoundCloud logo and looks decent enough. nine0003

Share songs to Instagram stories by JioSaavn

JioSaavn's UI update has made it on par with leading music streaming services in terms of features. If JioSaavn is your music streaming platform of choice, here's what you need to know to share songs from the app on Instagram. First, click on the three-dot vertical menu to open the pop-up window. When the pop-up appears, click "Share". nine0003

When the share sheet opens, select Instagram Stories. In a few seconds, JioSaavn will take you to Instagram and you can share that song you miss with your friends and family.

Share songs on Instagram Stories from Wynk Music

If you use Wynk Music, you can share songs on Instagram Stories. When you are in the player interface, click "More". After that, you will see the "Share" button as the first option. Click on it and wait for Wynk Music to navigate to the Instagram Story Download UI. nine0003

Unlike most apps on this list, Wynk Music uses Android's share sheet. As a result, you will have to take a minute to find "Instagram Stories" from the list of available apps. Once you find it, click on it to share the story. However, I'm not happy with Wynk Music's implementation. As you can see below, the developers have not added a direct option to open Wynk Music from Instagram, and all you get is an album cover with the app's logo in it. In a way, you could say that Wynk Music lied to me. I hope Wynk Music will fix this in a future update. nine0003

Share songs to Instagram stories from Shazam

Although Shazam is not technically a music streaming service, millions of people around the world use the app to identify songs. If you're too excited after finding a catchy song using Shazam, you can share it with your Instagram followers directly from Shazam. To do this, open the Shazam page with the song, click on the three-dot vertical menu and select "Share". nine0003

On the Share page, search for "Shazam - Instagram Stories". Keep in mind that this option will have the Shazam logo, not Instagram. For reference, you can take a look at the image below. Once you find it, click on it and share the story on Instagram.

Share songs on Instagram stories by Gaana

Gaana's implementation of song sharing on Instagram is a bit complicated and unreliable. While you won't see the option to share a song to Instagram from the player interface, this option does appear when you navigate to a track from the album section. Even so, it just generates album art like Wynk Music and doesn't offer a direct option to play the song from the Gaana app. nine0003

If you're still interested, you can access the album view, click on the horizontal button with three dots, and select Share to Instagram Story. As you can see below, Gaana did not offer the ability to access the app.

Share songs to Instagram stories with Pandora

In September 2019, Pandora added the ability to share songs to its app. To use this feature, open the app and play one of your favorite songs. In the music player interface, click on the horizontal three-dot menu next to the track name and select "Share". On the post sheet, select Instagram Stories. Share songs to Instagram stories by Deezer

Deezer is another music streaming service that has the ability to share songs to Instagram Stories. You can click on the horizontal three-dot menu next to the song and choose "Share to Instagram Stories" to get started.

Streaming services without sharing stories on Instagram

There are currently only two major streaming services that do not support posting songs to Instagram Stories. Of these two, YouTube Music will soon join the others as it has been testing the music sharing feature. However, there is no word on Amazon Music.

Share songs on Instagram

If you're in a hurry, you'll be happy to know that you can share songs using Instagram's music feature without relying on third-party apps. However, please note that your song selection is limited to the Instagram music library. To get started, choose a background for your story and click the sticker button on the top right side of the story interface. Select "Music" from the options that appear. nine0003

In the search field, find the song you want to share and select it when the results appear. You can save a track thumbnail or choose to display text.

If you are adventurous, you can combine both. For example, you can take a screenshot of the player interface (it's a bit old-fashioned, I know) and select the exact song from the Instagram library. The result looks something like the one below. The reason I prefer this method is so that viewers can hear part of the song without having to open the streaming service. nine0003

How to share music from Apple Music to Instagram or Facebook

You can share artists, albums, playlists, and individual songs using the Apple Music app. All you have to do is tap on the three-dot menu anywhere in the Apple Music app, and then select "Share Song" from the pop-up action sheet. nine0003

If you want to put music on your Instagram or Facebook stories, and not just add a link in a status update, you'll need to work with albums, playlists, or songs.

To share an album or playlist, open it in the Apple Music app and tap the three-dot menu at the top of the screen. You can press and hold your finger on an album or playlist in your library to bring up the Quick Actions menu . There select "Share Album" or "Share Playlist" .

To share a specific song, press and hold on the Apple Music app to bring up the Quick Actions menu . You can also start playing a song by tapping its name at the bottom of the screen, and then tapping the menu button with three dots. Select "Share" from the menu that appears (see screenshot above).

Apple Music automatically creates a picture with the correct dimensions and blurred background to match the colors of the music cover. There will also be a link to Apple Music that your subscribers can click to open that song, album, or playlist on the Apple music service.

Use the Instagram buttons at the top of the screen to add stickers, draw pictures, or insert text into your story. You can also drag the Apple Music image to shrink it, rotate it, or move it around the screen. nine0003

At the bottom of the screen, select the option to share this post for "Your Story" or "Close Friends". Or select "Share" to share with other people.

Anyone viewing your story can click the Play on Apple Music button at the top of the screen to open that song, album, or playlist in the Apple Music app on their device.

How do I share Apple Music lyrics (quote) to Instagram stories and other services?

Starting with iOS 14.5, Apple Music introduced a feature that allows subscribers to the streaming service to share the lyrics of the songs they listen to as a set of words. It is possible to send audio clips that contain sung words. We'll walk you through how this feature works.

Many songs in Apple Music have lyrics that can be viewed in real time. This makes it possible to sing along during track playback or use it to jump to certain parts of the song. With iOS 14.5 and later on your iPhone or iPad, you can now share lyrics with a friend or more on social media, including Instagram Stories. nine0003

In some cases, this feature also allows you to share clips with the desired song. For example, if you want to share a song via iMessage, then an Apple Music card will appear in the chat. It will allow the recipient to play a specific part of the song in the message box by simply pressing the play button. Here are the steps to help you share lyrics on Apple Music:

1. Open the Music app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Start playing a song from Apple Music. At the bottom of the screen, tap on a currently playing song to expand the mini player. nine0003

3. Click the Text button in the lower left corner of the screen. If it's greyed out, then Apple Music doesn't have lyrics for the current song and you won't be able to share them.

4. When the lyrics are displayed in real time on the screen, press and hold any word.

5. An action menu will appear allowing you to click on the individual lines of text you want to send. To deselect the selected text, simply tap it again. Note that Apple imposes a character limit. This means that on average you can use between four and six lines depending on the song. It is worth focusing on the limit of 150 characters. nine0003

6. Select a sharing method from the two rows of options, such as Instagram, Facebook, or Messages (iMessage).

After the Music app creates an Instagram story, you'll be taken to that app to complete the post. The more lines of text have been selected, the larger the story card will be.

You can also share the desired song fragment using the action "Share lyrics..." .

Songs added to stories from Apple Music won't play

While you can usually add music to your Instagram and Facebook stories, any stories you share items from the Apple Music app with will be silent. Of course, anyone who views them can click on the Apple Music link at the top of your story to play that song in the Apple Music app. nine0003

Unable to add custom sound effects or music to stories from Apple Music. This may be due to licensing issues as Apple may not have the required licenses to play these songs in other apps.

Post other media to your stories

Posting music to Instagram and Facebook is a great way to let other people know what you're listening to. If you want to show your followers what you're doing, you can also share photos and videos to stories. nine0003

One of the best features of the iPhone is Live Photos. These short clips are a cross between a photo and a video, making your posts more exciting to watch than static photos. You can post live photos on social media to let your readers get to know you better.
